Krystiana nods, "I agree, Avi. There are all sorts of things we could get caught doing that would make us look bad."

"Let's look at our sources of vice to see where we could be thrown under the apple cart by the captain. There's going to be gambling for greed. There's going to be alcohol and food for gluttony. High class clientele to rub elbows with for pride and envy," the soldier counts these off on her fingers as if going through a checklist.

"I'm sure lust, sloth, and wrath will also show up somewhere as well. So, we need to stay sober, just watch at the tables, and be professional with the locals." She looks around at the others, "Keep it simple. Do the job and go. Let's not get chained down by the temptations laid bare before us."

The sketch is folded and handed over to your platoon, available to look at through the evening. The individual on the sketch has a regal bearing, definitely not the typical layabout that you would associate with theft.

The Captain considers your questions on methods and games, "Inysha is crafty and we have not caught her in the act so far, so our information can be limited. My sense though is that she does not greatly alter appearance through magic. She appears to have a bold personality and bluffs her way past most encounters. Do not believe her words as she has a cunning mind and could claim almost anything." Shuffling some papers on the desk, she adds "It appears that cards are her preference, many games including the popular crystalline bluff."

Crystalline bluff? What? Kala is feeling out of her depth all of a sudden. She keeps her expression neutral to hide her discomfort as she listens to the intel from the Captain.

And also... What if the Captain gave us a sketch of an innocent, high ranking person just to get us in trouble so she'd have an excuse to kick us out? Ugh. All this is making my head spin. Why can't it be simple?

An impressive structure even among the many wondrous sights in the Opaline Vault, the Glitterfang Halls is built into an excavated series of stalactites suspended 400 feet above the city’s sprawling Inner District. Deposits of multi-colored crystals peek out from the stalactite’s black-and-cream marble exterior. Most of the city’s native inhabitants can easily access the casino using earth glide, but a towering stone shaft houses a glass elevator to assist extraplanar visitors. The elevator ascends lazily to a marble platform connected to the group of stalactites, its glacial pace allowing for a breathtaking view of the city below.

All the rooms in the casino are circular and showcase the natural marble and crystal that composes the stalactites. Tunnels carved into the rock allow non-elementals passage between these rooms. Magically suspended, iridescent crystals provide dim, ambient light throughout the casino.

Having arrived approximately an hour before the casino opens, you have time to explore the casino and it's workers. The likely entry point for most is the elevator room or the entry hall as coats and exterior garments are stowed in this location.

The workers in the casino move about with purpose and generally ignore you at first as they are used to the Ungrounded providing security in the evening. After a quick conversation or two, they warm up and begin to whisper quietly to you as they pass by or are setting up a game for players. They confirm that there are numerous activities and classes of folks in attendance each evening. The high rollers are usually found in the Members Lounge or the rear tables in the Gaming Room. The staff seem earnest and no one arouses your suspicion.

After about an hour, folks begin to arrive. As suggested by the staff, there is an array of social classes and interplanar beings. Those of the earth type cruise quickly into the Foyer by emerging from the walls. Those of the Material or other Planes arrive by the elevator. No one looks at the Ungrounded staff and you are able to quickly fade into the background. About 15 minutes after the facility is opened, Kala and Raynard catch an eye of two interesting individuals. Kala spots a woman that seems to match closely to the sketch Inysha. She is wearing a formal gown and enters the facility alone through the Elevator.

Shortly afterwards, a second woman appears in the elevator behind Inysha, clearly trailing her. The woman is dressed well also, but what catches Raynard's eye is the obvious fact the woman is wearing a disguise.

Kala gestures subtly to the members of her team whose attention she can get, indicating that she's going to trail the supposed Inysha. She tries to remain inconspicuous, glancing around at other patrons and parts of the room, but always making sure to keep suspected-Inysha in her peripheral vision. Cobbling together multiple glances of varying lengths at her quarry, Kala attempts to see if she is doing anything cheaty yet, if she has anything hidden on her person to facilitate doing so, and who or what draws her attention.

Krystiana, as lawful security for the event, uses detect evil on the figure wearing the disguise.


Your group slowly coalesces around the figures. Inysha checks in at the Foyer and consults a ledger. Nodding to the woman behind the desk you catch a "...very good, that should be satisfactory for tonight." and then she advances into the main gaming room and begins to observe some tables. She seems more interested in the patrons than the games themselves and is drinking some of the offered wine.

The second figure enters the main gaming room, but breaks off after a minute and proceeds towards the main stage in the neighboring chamber. She also seems very interested in the patrons, and Raynard is able to easily follow her and observe.

While Krystiana is concentrating and the others focused on Inysha, Raynard gets a good view of the woman in disguise. She is a human woman and as she passes by an elderly oread noble, she deftly lifts his wallet from his pocket. Raynard has a good view of the event, and she passes on those standing and moves towards the members lounge.

Kala leans over to Avi and mutters: "I hope this comes to a head soon. I can only keep Stinky behaving with treats for so long before he gets full or bored. I'm pretty sure this fancy crowd wouldn't appreciate that." She fishes another tidbit of jerky from a bag at her belt and holds it down for Stinky.

I did detect evil on the woman in the disguise that came in after Inysha. Also, as a paladin it's only a single move action to get the normal 3rd round of detect evil and I can only detect on the specific person/object I choose. So, I don't know about the rest of the room.

Inysha has magical armor underneath her dress, along with a magical sword.

Inysha continues to watch the games be played and makes small talk with a number of individuals around the gaming tables. She has made no move to play and seems relaxed and just partaking of the events.

The disguised woman continues to move about the stage area and Raynard you are able to witness her make at least two more subtle pickpockets of guests. After another circuit of the room, she stands by the entrance to the members lounge and is handling a deck of cards.

Krystiana walks up to the ledger and attendant at the front desk. "A moment ago a lady dressed in a formal gown that looks like this," she shows the sketch of Inysha, "came up and spoke with you. What did she ask about?"


The attendant looks momentarily confused and then snaps out of it. "General Faiza? She looked over who was providing security tonight. Umm,I mean, you. You do realize that General Faiza is the overall commander of the Ungrounded right?"

Kala feels her ire rise at the Captain's duplicitous tactics. The only thing helping her keep her cool is that Krystiana managed to realize it in time. Now at least they could avoid doing harm. First, though... "Grrr. Okay. So we need to make sure that everyone on our team knows. Let's find Raynard and Lina." She scans the room, her impressive height giving her an advantage, then moves off in Raynard's direction once she spots him. "Stinky, heel." Who's he talking to, I wonder? Hopefully a troublemaker, so we can make this look good. Curse that Captain. Just like grandmother. Set you up to fail. Nothing's ever good enough...

The woman looks up sharply at Raynard at his verbal challenge. Looking quickly left and right she assesses if he is alone and pulls a small blade from her dress and lunges out. The blade lightly scrapes Raynard's arm, but the contact poison enters his bloodstream. Raynard's arm begins to tingle.

Across the room you see a quick disturbance and get a glance of Raynard wincing in pain. The larger room has not noticed, but those nearby seem to think something is off.

Kala's unpleasant rumination is cut short as soon as she sees Raynard's body language change as he winces in pain. Immediately she is on her guard as understanding flashes across her mind: she is their true target. Pointing to the woman who clearly did something to hurt Raynard, she gives a command: "Stinky, flank!"

"Guys, that woman did something to Raynard. Let's go!" She draws her warhammer and shield as she strides swiftly in their direction, her long legs covering so much ground with each rapid step that an average-sized woman would have to jog a bit to keep up.

Once she arrives at the scene, Kala positions herself defensively and asks in a commanding tone: "What is going on here?"

If Inysha flees:
Kala pounds after her, almost shouting to Stinky: "Stinky! Track!"

Avi focuses on the woman that Kala is closing in on, trying to figure out what has just happened in the commotion.

Once he quickly realizes that she's just attack Raynard, he decides to help incapacitate her..

As the Unbroken move forwards, the crowd notices and begins to clear away from the entrance to the Player's Lounge. Inysha attempts to bolt forward but realizes that is unlikely with Kala, Stinky and Krystiana coming onwards. The tremor hits beneath her, but the stone must have dampened the effect and she easily steps back up the steps to the lounge, knife out. "Keep away dammit. I owe you nothing you rotten mercenaries. I can't pay what you ask, not if you are going to come down on me during my activities! Leave me be."

Everyone is about 30' away. Raynard, you are 5' away and the poison seems to have had no further effect. Full capabilities. She has quickdraw ability and is skilled with knife

Kala strides toward Inysha purposefully, and stands in such a way that Inysha is surrounded by Raynard, Stinky, and her. In a commanding, no-nonsense tone, she addresses first both Inysha and Raynard, then only the woman: "All right, that's enough. Let's take this outside. Come on." Come, on Raynard! This is a fancy shindig. Don't draw blood here! The Captain will have a hayday with that! Wishing she could say that out loud, she holds her shield before her, warhammer ready to swing into play, but chooses not to attack just yet, hoping to get this woman to come away without ruining the party.

Nearby patrons notice the heated conversation. Within a minute, pieces of paper start circling around the room, written in Terran it makes it difficult to read.

Each of the papers says “Fight or no Fight? Place your bets now! Odds are 2:1 in favor of a purely verbal argument over a physical confrontation!”

Raynard slashes Inysha across the legs as she makes a break to run. She collapses to the ground crying as some of the crowd cheers while most of it begins to curse as casino employees begin to deal out payments to those that were able to place bets on the short lived fight.

She rolls over holding both of her hands in the air as she lays on her back. "Alright I surrender. No need to kill me."

Avi starts glancing around the hall for the nearest place they might take Inysha out-of-the-way for interrogation under less notice among the crowds.

He stands just behind Raynard, whispering to him.

Kala shoots Avi a look of relief, commendation, and thanks for his handling of Raynard's hotheadedness and strides ahead to clear the players' lounge of any patrons. "Stinky, heel."

Stinky looks confused at first by the non-violent turn of events, especially since that one man had cut up the woman Stinky was flanking, but food wins out over a fight in the end. He scampers after Kala, a slight begging whine escaping his throat as he cranes his head up at her delicious-smelling pocket.

Normally Kala would chuckle at this behavior, but there is serious business to take care of. She impatiently fishes a piece of jerky out of her pocket and drops it to the floor for Stinky, knowing that he'll catch back up to her once he's finished with it.

If anyone is in the players' lounge:
Upon entering the lounge, Kala's stern, authoritative voice commands: "All right, everyone. Please exit the lounge. Official Ungrounded business. Please exit in an orderly fashion. As soon as we're finished here, you can return. Thank you."

The crowd makes plenty of room for the hungry wolverine as you help Inysha to her feet. Blood trickles leaving a trail across the floor as you make your way to the Player's Lounge.

Though Kala attempts to clear it out, most of the patrons roll their eyes and continue gambling, though a few do leave. Inysha looks up at you. "Tell you what? That you're all mad. I am just trying to earn my money back to pay you and you try to kill me!" Within moments additional security and medical staff rush in taking over to get Inysha to a medical bay for some first aid.

The rest of the night goes smoothly, and Boss thanks you for protecting his casino. He hands each of you a bag of gems in payment. (on your chronicle)

You are able to head back to the barracks without further incident.

Kala's expression darkens as she hears Inysha's claim. What in the blue blazes is going on here? Does the Captain know about this? Is it her idea? And why the heck did she think that if we'd tried to arrest General Faiza that she wouldn't find out who gave us the orders and the drawing? All this thinking is giving Kala a headache.

Before leaving, Kala tries to spot General Faiza in the crowd.

If she doesn't find General Faiza:

On the way back to the barracks, she shares her concerns with Avi and Krystiana in a low voice. She's still peeved at Raynard for slicing up Inysha at the fancy party, though she perfectly understands his anger at being stabbed with her poisoned dagger. Still, she's pretty sure the Captain will get on their case for causing a scene.

If she does find General Faiza:

Kala approaches the woman and as soon as there is an opening asks: "Excuse me, General Faiza. May we have a word with you in private? Something doesn't add up." If the General consents, Kala shows her the sketch of the General that Captain Othis gave the team and relates their orders. "I don't know how things work in the Ungrounded, but where I come from pranks are never pulled on our superiors...without consequences. This didn't seem right."
