Jeras drinks that potion of fly and flies away. While flying he pulls his daggers out.

Flora is able to ignore the Hold Person that was thrown her way by the mage, and with his second blow, Mal finishes off the green-cloaked warrior, who slumps down onto the surface of the water, unconscious. Perhaps the tide has started to turn.

Risha hesitates, reluctant to close with Mal. She's clearly weighing her options.

Mal could still use 5' step, but it did take full round attack to finish fighter. I'm assuming you were doing nonlethal dmg. Let me know if I'm in error, and/or if you continued to pummel him further into unconsciousness.

Current init order. BOLD may act.

Apparently I should just stop trying to attack the dragon. Roller refuses to give me anything over a 5 to hit.

CMD vs grapple is now 32 since I no longer have the grappled condition.

Flora, don't you have a touch-attack blast?
"Mal, we need to help Flora!"

Sorry Mal, I think they need Daathiel's help more than you do. Inspire Greatness has only a 30' range, so those temp HP go away for now - but you should be able to withstand a round and then come join us.

Daathiel double moves to get closer to Flora, drawing his wand of Shield as he moves.

The Exchange

Mal replies," Little busy, lots to fight over here, go help Flora with that cowardly dragon!"

I was trying to position Mal such that its more difficult for the other enemies to engage the rest of our party.

maps & images for The Ruby Phoenix Tournament |

Daathiel bravely closes with the dragon with only a wand of shield in hand.

Flora's blast is thwarted again by the thick hide of the dragon, who cackles in delight.

The half-orc laughs out loud in pure joy then lunges and attacks Mal three times before taking a 5' step back, frustrated by the inefficacy of his attacks...not that he seems the sort to know the meaning of the word inefficacy.
With lunge and reach, those attacks came from 15' away--I believe he's out of reach of your AoOs for the misses, Mal, but let me know if I'm in error.

Risha lets out a frustrated snort then takes a 5' step and fires a couple more arrows at the blinking bard. Just as one of the arrows is about to strike the bard, Daathiel blinks into the ethereal realm and the arrow passes harmlessly through.

When Jeras downs his potion the dragon seizes upon the opportunity and bites another large hunk out of Jeras. The Rogue flees, relieved to discover the dragon does not appear to have combat reflexes...or it simply chose not to attack the rogue as he fled.

The mage in the pink robes unleashes an elemental blast of fire that bursts between Jeras and Flora, engulfing them in flames. Jeras is able to evade the damage, while Flora is able to mitigate the damage a bit by ducking under some nearby tentacles. The black tentacles once again close on Flora, but the halfling is just to slick and slides free.

The dragon eyes the halfling hungrily, but decides it's not worth potentially having to deal with the black tentacles so it flies in pursuit of Jeras and tries to bite another chunk out of his hide, but his eagerness to finish his prey leads his attack slightly astray...

Helpful GM reminder: Jeras Remember that Withdraw is a thing...
Sorry for rolling your reflex saves, Flora and Jeras, but the elemental blast could've dropped you, so it has too much bearing on party actions to be left hanging. But you both succeeded on the save...

The half-orc's very Large greatsword cuts a vicious slash across Mal's back as he flies by, though it doesn't strike anything vital. Mal's uppercut delivers a stunning blow to the caster, though Mal notices that punching the mage is like punching a boulder.

The dragon hisses in anger at Daathiel's auditorial assault, though the creature does not seemed dazed by the spell.

Flora beats a hasty retreat below the surface of the water.

The Red Priest whirls his greatsword attacking Mal, but his blows can't seem to land, missing all 3 strikes. At RIsha's urging, the half-orc does take a 5' step to the southeast.
I believe you have 3 AoOs coming? if you're in the right style stance?

Risha then uses the small boat as cover to move into flank on Mal, though she spends her entire time just getting into position, pulling out two short swords as she goes, her shortbow bobbing on the waves where she dropped it.

Mals attack line includes fighting defensively because I always choose to do so. [10 (BAB)+8(Dex)+1 (competence)+ 3 (Enhacement)+1 (Swashbuckler weapon training)-1 (Fighting Defensively)+ 2 (luck, divine favor) +1 haste (untyped)]. If the half-orcs skin was also as hard as a stone, I wouldn't have used the immediate action attack in addition, so probably +12 hp and 10 back on the stoneskin. The main reason being that I'll need extra damage to get past DR, which I can only get via swift action activation of Bane Baldric.

Mal surveys at the enemies surrounding him with their rock hard skin and he grimaces a bit. He continues to turn around and glance at the his allies surrounding the dragon and thinks Sure hope its going better over there. Well, time for maximum effort here. If this doesn't go well, I may end up as fish food. An ornate velvet sash prominently slung across Mal's chest begins to glow, as he mutters a small curse against the humans surrounding him. Half-orc, Half-elf, and Human all count as human, nova time. Swift Action: Bane Humans

He finishes turning as his arm lands square in Risha's face, hoping to stun her. He continues his flurry on the half-elf, hoping to down her before she can cast another spell. After the flurry, his carpet and him float 5' diagonally up and to the south east, hoping to avoid a flank if Risha is unphased by the attack and lacks the ability to fly herself.

assuming those hit, 37 damage to Risha (or probably 27 and 10 her stoneskin) and DC 20 fort save or stunned, dropping her weapons, and 65 to the half-elf (and 30 more to the stoneskin). Same 36 AC (/+4 vs melee that falls if an attack is between 36 and 39, which additionally provokes).

While the rogue shakes off Mal's attempt to stun her, Mal finds some satisfaction in that Risha does not appear to have stoneskin. Bolstered by the notion that not all his enemies have stony flesh, he uses all three of his remaining blows to subdue the mage.

@Flora, hit him with as big a blast as you can. I will use Gallant Inspiration on a miss. You are at +1 Haste, +3 Insight (Bardic Performance).
@Jeras, when your turn comes around, a 5' step and Hasted full attack should do 150+ damage. You are at +6 over normal with Haste +1, Bardic +3, and Flanking +2. I would use Debilitating Injury on your first hit to lower the dragon's AC against you (effectively another +6 to hit), and on your last attack to cut its movement in half should it stil be alive. My morning was unexpectedly busy. Assuming Risha is still conscious after the first aoo and does miss me, I’d reroll on the snake fang aoo.

if still conscious after first aoo:

AoO reroll (crit 19-20),divine favor, bane, haste, GM stars: 1d20 + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 22 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 35 Damage,divine favor, bane, prevision: 1d8 + 12 + 2 + 2 + 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 12 + 2 + 2 + (3, 5) + 5 = 36

she needs to go down, so if that strike doesn’t down her, I would immediate action another aoo on her, since Red listens to her. Spoiled below if necessary.

RIsha drops unconscious when Mal kicks her in the face while she tries to climb up on the boat.

The cleric shakes his head in frustration. "No, no, NO! THis is going much too quickly. We must HONOR GORUM! The Battle must be long and glorious!" He takes a five-foot step and channels positive energy. Not only are some of his wounds healed, all 3 of his allies stir back into consciousness...and even Mal is healed a little. As far as the state of the field, are both of Risha's weapons lying beside her prone self in the boat? Green must have water breathing, since he was in the water for over 2 rounds and isn't dead, but I assume his weapon is down 20' now as well? Pink is probably just as dangerous as ever, since her weapons are not easy to disarm, but also looks to be prone on the boat? Good luck Jeras!

So as to whether or not Daathiel needed to use Gallant Inspiration:
First attack is a hit against AC 41 for 35 damage. Dragon has now taken 132 (Flora's blast does count as magic and piercing).
Second attack is a hit against AC 42. That is 38 damage if a 27 confirms the crit, or 26 if it doesn't (the Sneak Attack damage doesn't multiply). Dragon is at either 158 or 170 damage taken.
If the dragon is still up after that, Daathiel would use Gallant Inspiration on the third attack (which only hits AC 21).
Gallant Inspiration: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 Another +4 to hit, maybe not enough.
But then there are two more attacks, hitting AC 30 for 31 damage, and AC 42 for 30 damage. Pretty sure that should do it.
The main question is if the first two attacks did it (so Daathiel didn't use Gallant Inspiration) or if the later attacks did it.

Risha indeed is prone and unarmed, with swords on the boat next to her. Green did not sink, in fact, he never touched the water at all, though he is prone, floating about an inch above the surface of the harbor. In fact, all of them do not appear to be touching the water whatsoever. Green's greataxe, on the other hand, is indeed at the bottom of the bay. And pink is prone as well. His sickle is also at the bottom of the bay (not that he used it, but he's obviously no longer a flank buddy)

@GM Thanks! That is pretty cool that he is floating above the water. I had thought the pink half-elf was female based on the earlier description. I sure hope that dragon went down from Jera's assault. Its amazing how disadvantagous the serial nature of the tournament (opponents who know not to let Jeras get flanking) has been to him, as he is extremely effective when he can full attack with one.

GM Uktar wrote:

Jeras steps in and commences the close work that is his bloody trade, unleashing a blur of attacks. With his first attack, his adamantine blade cuts away a few scales and exposes some flesh just beneath where its wing meets its torso. Seizing upon the opening, Jeras is able to bury his cold iron dagger deep enough into the dragon's flesh his hand disappears inside the dragon up to his wrist, though it quickly re-emerges as the dragon begins to fall to the water below, unconscious. Having just witnessed the cleric healing his compatriots, the rogue does not let up on his assault, intent on making certain this brine dragon will never again torment the people of Xielan Island. While his next blow doesn't penetrate the creature's hide, his final attacks elicit a rumbling death rattle from the beast before it splashes into the harbor and sinks into its watery grave.

1) I'm assuming Jeras would not want to let up on his attack, but if Jeras does want to stop after it goes below zero, just say so.
2) Daathiel, if he does continue his assault, I'll leave it you to decide if Daathiel would choose to use Gallant Inspiration on an attack against the unconscious dragon--Daathiel would know Jeras has a couple attacks left. Totally your choice on whether that's something he'd do.

Mal looks at the gorumite" To the end I guess. I can only hope if I end up in the drink you'll pull me out for having honored this battle." He thinks, not for the first time, I really should spend some time to learn about enemy spellcasting...

He once again calls upon his sash as a bane against humans and attacks. He starts with 2 strikes against gorumite, then makes one against the prone Risha who has recently awoken, and then finishes with a final strike against the half-orc.

The red-cloaked cleric of Gorum grunts with satisfaction as Mal continues to batter him. Risha looks up at the foot about to stomp her in the face and manages to sigh and mutter, "friggin' Pathfinders..." before Mal's kick knocks her back into unconsciousness.

Relieved at having saved Flora's life, Daathiel isn't quite prepared for the undertow caused by the sinking dragon, and is pulled just below the surface of the water.

Worst-case scenario, Daathiel fails another swim check, he'll be on the bottom and can walk for the shore. It's slow going, but he should be able to make it to shore well before he drowns. He makes swim check, he can then take to the air (using move action to swim, move action to get airborne. Swift action still available). Make sense?

The Gorumite nods to Mal and says, "As long as your friends hold off on assaulting me while I pull you out..." Then he attacks. He grunts with satisfaction as his first blow strikes home. Though it is well-placed, Mal is able to shift his body and avoid a more critical injury. the cleric's next two attacks do not strike the elusive monk...almost assuredly to the cleric's detriment.

And we're out of initiative. With 3 of you in the air and on the lookout, the sorceress beats a hasty retreat--she's invisible and 120' away when Daathiel takes station (and in Air Elemental form), and she immediately bolts. So I'm unaware of any way you'd likely catch her. Feel free to pipe up if you have any ideas/want to try and pursue.

After a few more moments of prowling about, looking for the mage, the party finally relaxes a bit. Mal and Jeras maintain their vigilance while hovering near Flora while Daathiel uses his masterpiece to heal the party. You gather up the three unconscious bushwackers, all of whom float an inch above the waves, which Daathiel recognizes as likely the being the byproduct of the spell Water Walk. After stripping away all their gear and securing the prisoners, you board the vessel and find some sailors cowering in the hold, using Marthysan as a shield, dagger to his throat--though he's probably more in danger of being accidentally nicked by the shaking hand of the nervous sailor than if the sailor were trying to actually harm him. As soon as you guarantee you won't kill the sailors, they set Marthysan free, muttering how they were merely hired to sail the vessel to the mainland, and didn't know there was anything untoward going on until those cruel thugs showed up with their prisoner and demanded they set sail with the next tide, or the sailors would become fish food. They identify Risha and the fighter in the green cloak, named Darys, as the ones who hired them. The sailors offer to leave and never return to this "backwater island of stinkin' fishermen again."

handwaving healing: Daathiel has enough performance rounds left to take care of it no matter how bad the rolls...
What would you like to do with the sailors, and the three unconscious prisoners?
