"I agree, the Society must be informed of the truth, consequences be damned. Mercival, thank you for your hospitality and generosity. This visit to your museum has been exceptionally illuminating," Ilathor says with a small bow and taking the ring.

When/wherever we are when we look over the notes...
Reading the notes, the Elf thinks for a moment before speaking. "I propose a change of pace. After our time in the city, let us spend some time in the forest! I say we pursue this Autumn's Cowl!"
________
If anyone wants the ring, please take it! Ilathor took it more so that it was on the record that the party claimed it.

Damhán seems unconcerned with the providence of the historical documents. Sure, the guy might have copied the words of another... but rephrasing things only leads to misinterpretations, in his opinion. As long as the story itself was still accurate enough. As far as he was aware, the Society was after the information, not the authenticity of its supplier.

It certainly was not something to see blood over. Definitely not worth rocking the boat now, so many decades later. He could only shake his head at the others overreactions.

When they hear news of where they are to head to next, either seems equally interesting, so is fine with conceding to Ilathor's suggestion on which to pick.

"Hopefully it won't rain." He mutters, remembering where they are.

"I care not for city or forest. This goes deep and I intend to dig all the way down." Although he does not show it much, he is seething within that the organisation that he pledged to serve seemed to have a rotten core. He should not be surprised, but is nonetheless still disappointed.

I'll say let Rowena have the ring. Low will save and frontliner likely to need it. Kazu has resiliency that can save him in case of negative energy channeling and what not.

Then, hearing Ilathor's suggestion, he groans a little.

"The last time I was in a forest, it was on fire. I cannot imagine this trip could be any worse. So we can just as well get this done."

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

The return trip from Korvosa is uneventful and the party has an opportunity to provide a report to Mr. Shane.

If you provide information of Helven's misdeeds to Kreighton:

The Venture-Captain listens carefully. Upon the conclusion of the report, he thanks you all for your successful investigation, but uncharacteristically says little more. He suggests that you get some rest after your long journey back from Korvosa, as future assignments await.

Not long afterward, the party is again dispatched, this time to the Arthfell Forest. Following the letter received from Kreighton Shane and with the aid of the magical wayfinder provided with the message, the party safely arrives in the Arthfell Forest heading in the direction where it is believed the gnome Eylysia had previously traveled.

Map now revealed on Handouts.

En route, the party has time to contemplate what they may know of the area.

Rowena actually would rather pass on the ring. She wouldn't feel comfortable using something with a profane bonus

At the next dispatch, the group finds that Rowena is apparently not with them. Instead, they find a woman in dark Numerian leather armor wearing a holy symbol of the Black Butterfly around her neck. Her head is covered by a hood and cape and a solid black mask dotted with stars. She has a cat with her covered in similar silver star markings and her eyes gleam with soft light.

Ilathor Valmaxian wrote:
GM, what season are we visiting this forest?

Going with the current season where I am in the US-- late-spring/early summer.

The road upon which you travel on ends and the natural splendor of Arthfell forest falls away to a barrier of dried-out thorns that does little to obscure the lifeless trees beyond. Frigid winds whisper through branches that claw at the sky as a mist rises out from deep within the wood.

There you see a woman, clearly employing magic to tend to the thorns--her touch making the thorns green and revitalized, thereby allowing the barrier to repair itself, growing thicker in the process. However, soon after her touch recedes, the newly-rejuvenated thorns begin to lose their lush, green color and start to fade, becoming more brown and brittle.

Upon seeing you, she looks up somewhat surprised. Reacting quickly, the woman moves gracefully, yet swiftly, to place herself between you and the barrier of thorns.

"Greetings, Travelers!" she states. "I am Adelyn Rhinon of the Greenfire Circle. For your safety, I must insist that you go no further for beyond this protective barrier lies a thicket, now blighted from a senseless massacre of druids that occurred centuries earlier. So powerful is this blight that it causes plants to wither and travelers to become lost."

A picture of Adelyn is now revealed in Handouts.

"My charge is to maintain this wall." she continues, subconsciously rubbing her hands as she speaks as if to ease the aches likely to follow hours of toil. "Know that it is in place to prevent both unsuspecting wanders from falling to the harms beyond as well as to bar entry to those wily lycanthropes who would seek to use its magics for their own ill-purposes."

She looks you straight in the eyes, while her hand moves to the pummel of a silvered blade sheathed at her waste. Assertively, she asks, "Of which kind, do you profess to be?"

Rather abruptly, Kazu calls out, "Do you know of a Autumn's Cowl?"

While studying her response, he pulls out the wayfinder that the Venture Captain has passed to them, looking to see if it has any reaction here in the vicinity of the forest. He does not hide its presence from the strange woman.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

Knowledge (nature, local, planes)(DC 16+):
You identify Adelyn as an aasimar druid and a Greenfire Adept.

"My apologies," Adelyn responds in deference as she looks upon the wayfinder. "I should have realized that you are Pathfinders. Your Society has, in times past, uncovered useful information and aided our cause. It is my hope that you can do so again."

While she speaks, the druid approaches the barrier of thorns before the party. With a wave of her hand, the greener portions of the wall part, granting a path through into the bleak wood beyond. The newly-formed opening provides view of the foreboding woodland that fills the space beyond. Tall, naked trees are interspersed with the occasional needle-covered fir, and the ground is barren with no signs of fauna.

"The Autumn's cowl is not something of which I am familiar." Adelyn informs the tengu. "Though those among my kin celebrate the changing seasons with holidays. The most important of these celebrations occur in spring, symbolizing new life, and autumn, symbolizing acceptance of death."

"Is this cowl what has brought you here?" she asks. "I had hoped that you had come to learn more of the blight that has, for so long, afflicted the thicket beyond this barrier."

"I wish to see this forsaken place returned to health." notes Adelyn. "The Greenfire druids established this wall of thorns around the entirety of the thicket, but due to the thicket’s magic, the thorns become brittle and dry if they are not regularly maintained. The Shadow Pact--the violent lycanthropes I mentioned--have repeatedly attacked the boundary. It seems they believe that some powerful weapons are hidden within. If that is true, then they must not be permitted to obtain them."

"Yet, the act of maintaining the barrier and restoring that which quickly withers has been quite laborious. Likewise, fending off the frequent attacks has also taken its toll." Adelyn implores, "Please, be mindful of any threats. And, if you learn of something of the blight that could allow it to be vanquished, I would be in your debt."

The Greenfire adherent bids you all safe passage and allows you through the barrier, before closing it behind you.

Navigating the deep, blighted wood proves more difficult than one would expect.
A Survival check is needed. Only a single PC may attempt the roll, but allies may make aid another checks.

As the party travels, the quiet wood seems to hold some secrets.
All PCs may attempt the Perception check.

The dhamphir and vigilante have little difficulty navigating the woods, despite the enchantments and wards apparently put in place to make the effort more difficult. With assistance from most of the other party, the task is made all the more simple.

Thus, the party discovers the center of the thicket quickly, outpacing an encroaching bank of dense fog.

The heart of the thicket is less visually imposing than its lifeless outer reaches. Deciduous trees burst with magnificent autumnal colors and the ground is covered in tangled gardens of flowers, gourds and vegetables.

Thick undergrowth chokes the ground in this open thicket, and clutching ivy climbs the posts and eves of an abandoned lumber mill on the thicket’s far side. Though the light of the sun reaches all but the darkest corners of this vine-covered garden, the air still bears an oppressive quality, as though neither light nor humanoid life is truly welcome.

Map of thicket now revealed on slides.

Terrain Rules: The ground on the map is covered in plant life, which makes the squares count as difficult terrain; succeeding at a DC 15 Acrobatics check at the start of their turn allows a creature to move at normal speed.

Richard learns a useful piece of information the harder way!

Surprise Round
Kazu has +14 Acrobatics so automatically succeed DC15 to treat ground as normal terrain.

On feets that practically fly across the ground, Kazu quickly moves towards the closest plant creature, although not quite enough to reach it. (Move)[ooc]

[ooc]Standard Round
However, that brings him close enough to charge the remainder of the distance. He spins in a tight circle, slamming the back of his claw upon where its head seems to be.

Full round: charge: Kazu has Scout's Charge, allowing him to deal sneak damage on a charge unless target has uncanny dodge.

Bludgeoner, Enforcer, Frightening, Scout's Charge, Charge, Bless
claw 1: 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 31 nonlethal dmg: 1d3 + 7 + 3d6 ⇒ (3) + 7 + (1, 2, 6) = 19

Damhán doesn't know much about gourds, much less animated ones... But it's just a weird vegetable, right?

His hands start to move in wide sweeps, and bits of random debris from the field start to shuffle around him, until a large stone shoots across the distance towards the closest creature on the right. With one quick gesture, he drops it right on top of it, from some height!

Full round action, kinetic blast, extended range, and adding bowling infusion, taking one burn in the process

telekinetic blast, overflow: 1d20 + 1 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 1 + 8 = 21, for 2d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4) + 6 + 2 = 14 damage.

if that hits, then:

However, the feathered Pathfinder shakes off the feeling and then smashes the pumpkin!

Damhán smashes another one (green), though not quite as hard.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

Quintus:
The jack-o'-lanterns do not burn readily and have a number of special attacks--including the tendency to erupt in a burst of flaming spores upon death!

Fire resistance: 15

Explode (Ex): One round after a jack-o’-lantern is reduced to 0 or fewer hit points, it explodes in a burst of flaming spores. Creatures within 10 feet of an exploding jack-o’-lantern must succeed at a DC 14 Reflex save or take 2d6 points of fire damage and be stunned for 1 round. A successful save halves the damage and negates the stun.

Damhán-Alla:
Still resembling a spherical pumpkin, the jack-o'-lantern appears to be impossible to trip.

Horrid, fiery grins appears on the not-truly-pumpkins as they rise up out of the overgrown field upon tendril-like limbs resembling serpentine vines. Fully revealed as jack-o'-lanterns, one of them (green) extends its flaming maw and releases a cone of fire directed at the masked heroine!

Black Midnight, Reflex (DC 14): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Damage (fire): 1d10 ⇒ 5

The agile Pathfinder avoids the brunt of the flames.

The second jack-o'-lantern (orange) attempts to pass quickly through the thick growth.
Jack-o'-lantern, Acrobatics(DC 15): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16

Moving quickly towards the cleric, a series of slithering vines fly forth from the creature and attempt to strike the Pathfinder and engulf him within their grasp.
Slam (entangling ensnare): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage (B): 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

However, the vines fail to connect.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Damhán frowns, then easily steps over the vine covered ground, to get a clearer line on the jack-o'-lantern trying to entangle Quintus.

Again, bits of debris start to swirl around him, and congeal into a somewhat solid mass... though this time he simply hurls it across the intervening space, at the gourd-like creature!

5' step, then move action gather power, then blast the one in the middle with metakinesis to empower it !

empowered telekinetic blast vs orange, overflow, pbs: 1d20 + 8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 1 + 1 = 16, for 2d6 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 18 * 1.5 = 27 damage.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

The elven arcanist recalls more about the jack-o'-lanterns even as his bolts of magical force blast one apart (green), causing it to drop onto the ground.

Ilathor:
You know that the horrid faces of these creatures can cause some to be physically wracked with fear, that their wretched mouths can expel flames, and that their vine-like limbs can entangle their prey.

Fear Aura (Su): Any creature within 20 feet of a jack-o’-lantern must succeed at a DC 15 Will save or be shaken for 2d6 minutes. If the Will save is successful, the creature is immune to that jack-o’-lantern’s fear aura for 24 hours.

Breath weapon (20-ft. cone, 1d10 fire, Reflex DC 14 half, usable every 1d4 rounds)

Strangling Ensnare (Ex): A jack-o’-lantern’s slam attack entangles the target in its vines for 2d4 rounds unless the target succeeds at a DC 16 Reflex save. The target can attempt to burst these entangling vines before the duration expires with a successful DC 12 Strength check as a fullround action. While the target is entangled, its vines also grasp at the target’s mouth. The target cannot speak or cast spells with verbal components while it is entangled by the jack-o’-lantern. When a creature is entangled by this ability, the jack-o’-lantern loses its slam attack, but it can end this ability as a free action.

Forgot the jack-o'-lantern's aura until now, not that it would have made a difference. However, since it could to Damhán-Alla's attack...

Damhán-Alla, Will save (DC 15): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

As the plant-creature approaches the human kineticist, the Pathfinder is overcome by a feeling of terror causing his blast to be a bit off, which allows the remaining jack-o'-lantern (orange) to avoid it.
Damhán-Alla is shaken, taking a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked. The effect lasts for a number of minutes: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

Black Midnight and Ilathor are both shaken, taking a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked. The effect lasts for a number of minutes: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

The vigilante's strike fails to connect as the vine-like appendages of the leafy foe allow it to easily avoid the blow.

A second eruption of flaming spores shoots forth from the remains of another jack-o'-lantern (green), though the Pathfinders are out of reach of its flames.

Damhán is not at all comfortable near the strange gourd-like creatures... in fact, he really wants them to go away, so grits his teeth and does the best he can to make them do so!
