To answer James' question, nope, it was me leaving the door open for further shenanigans.
That said, I will never be able to watch the Terminator movies. for much the same reasons that the buzz around machine learning and the standard evil AI plots grate on my nerves. I have a degree in computer science and on of the things you learn when you start getting into programming is that computers are fekkin' stupid. They have no capacity for judgement, no intuition, they do not understand context and they sure as hell can't spontaneously develop sentience/sapience. Even barring that, for the kinds of events that we see in Terminator and The Matrix to happen, we have to assume that the developers behind the various AI projects that doom humanity are brain-dead morons that should never have been given the job, or twisted, genocidal maniacs that are using the projects as some twisted way of dooming humanity, but that is its own bag of snakes.
Basically, while unexpected things can come up in complicated systems, you aren't going to get a functioning, intelligent being out of a pile of bugs. Computers and programs that run them just flat out do not work that way, and there's evidence that a lot of the hype around Machine Learning is hot air anyway. There's been a few cases where older algorithms with some tweaks are able to match or out perform their machine learning counterparts.
Sorry for the rant. It's been a weekend of me railing on lousy writing. :P
More long work days so far this week, so I haven't had a chance to update with my heart in it just yet. It'll come soon enough.
