The cloaked figures finally seem to notice the assembled pathfinders and they cease chanting and stand, which causes the hoods of their robes to fall back. Each has gouged-out eyes partially filled with scar tissue. Two also draw out jawless skulls with tightly rolled scrolls stuffed into their eye sockets. As they speak with the pathfinders — a process that is more like chanting than conversational speech — they pass the skulls back and forth as if using them as the focus for some supernatural sense. One of the robed figures challenges the pathfinders to explain themselves by intoning, “Some say the future is unwritten. I say it is written right here. Should others be enlightened?”

Roni inches closer to Agate, muttering under his breath.
"I don't like the way they look. Say something smart before this turns into an inferno."
Addressing the dwarves, slightly raising his voice. "Uh, just passing by. I think. No need to get hostile... Right?"
Alaric ir'Ganak

Alaric replies in Dwarven: "Future is much like present and past. Filled with blood, meat and bone. Death and destruction. Tribute to the strong. Tears for the weak." He pauses, trying to get a better sense as to who they are worshiping.

The sightless seers seem delighted with the irreverent lyrics of the angry Kellid skald, hiding their scarred faces behind their hands and giggling with embarrassment. As a sign of their appreciation, when the song comes to an end, two of them retrieve the bundled scrolls from the eye sockets of the skulls they have been passing about, and shyly offer them to Alaric. "Please, take these to remember us by... And, if you wouldn't mind, we would love to have your autograph!" If Alaric assents to this request the blind sages are soon jostling with each other, offering various body parts for his signature, and exclaiming proudly that the novices over in the Chamber of Portents will be green with envy when they hear the news.
A brief perusal of the scrolls reveals that they contain valuable information about the history and religious practices of Jormurdun, information that will undoubtedly make Kreighton Shaine very happy.
For beating the DC by 10 (on the nose), you earn 2 successes. Good time to have rolled a 20!
@Troi, your Daylight spell has now expired.

It takes about 15 minutes to reach the Miners' District. As the pathfinders travel down one of the dwarves' mining tunnels, they can hear guttural roars echoing down the tunnel accompanied by the ground shuddering. Roni, following your usual practice, I'll assume you've activated Heightened Awareness but you should mark off some charges for travel time

Red: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Blue: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Once you come around the corner, you see two huge creatures brawling with each other, seemingly oblivious to the four dwarven miners caught in their midst. Each of the huge creatures is partially in the ground. Each time one of the creatures misses the other with an attack, it shakes the mine and dislodges dust and fragments of rock from the ceiling. The dwarves are ill-equipped to defend themselves or escape the conflict.
The bold may act!

Whoa! not so fast! Troi yells after Sindelle as she darts off. He quickly casts Haste on all of the others and their companions, then rushes after the healer.
Sounds a bit dangerous up a--- he turns the corner and sees a pair of massive rock and fire things slamming into each other. Yeah, that's not good.
He then stares at the red-glowing red creature closest (it gets -3 attack, -4 Will)

Thanks! From the throne room thingie, how long have we travelled for? Last combat ended in 1:19, it's now 2:25, I've probably burned through 7 charges.
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 -> failed, again
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 -> failed

umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 -> failed
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29 -> first success, 1 charge used
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26 -> second
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 -> failed
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 -> third
umd for HA: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 -> Locked
So I spent 3 charges and now HA wand is locked for this day. Didn't have HA up for this combat. In addition, negative levels affect ability checks (and removing the burns also lowered my init by +1) so -7 initiative for Roni. He still gets to go before the monsters, so no worries ^_^
Roni sharpens up at the sound of battle. "Better speed up." Tensing his body up, Roni shields his face with his left hand before snapping his fingers. An explosion behind his back propels him through the air at break-neck speed. With a practiced rolling landing, hi's up on his feet before you know it.
Flame Jet, standard action, doesn't cost burn, can move up to 60ft in a straight line
"By the State, that thing is huge!" Noticing the trapped dwarves as he runs across the corner, he adds: "Squishies in the line of fire! Engage the creatures, keep them off of the civilians!"

Sindelle comes around the corner and stops short when she sees the two looming creatures and the poor dwarves cowering in their midst.
Red is a rocky monster glowing with an internal heat. Red light spills from its eyes and mouth, as well as fractures in its outer surface. However, Sindelle has no idea what particular kind of creature it might be.
Blue, however, she recognizes. This is a huge earth elemental - typically N Huge outsider (earth, elemental, extraplanar). This hulking, roughly humanoid creature of dirt and stone emerges up from the earth, faceless save for two glowing gemstone eyes. Sindelle recalls that they have no special immunities beyond those typical of all elementals (Immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning. Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack.) In addition, she recalls that it has no particularly noteworthy special defenses.
Troi summons a burst of speediness for his companions (except Sindelle, who has already hurried forward out of range) and then moves up and puts the stinkeye upon Red.
Loxx and Fetch move up towards the battle.
@Roni, ok, for the future your initiative modifier will be +13, correct?
Roni shoots a huge blast of flame from his rear - it remains to be seen whether Agate, who was standing directly behind him, has anything to say about this - which propels him forward. He then lands and quickly moves forward to get into position.
Agate, Alaric, and Thurismund are up!

Agate rushes to the bend in the tunnel to see what the commotion is. Unable to get a clear shot yet, she waves her hands and chants, and a faint glow of magical force surrounds her. Casting Stunning Barrier.

Readying to cast Haste when Thurismund is in range to get himself and Thurismund and a majority of his allies. Thurismund will be in range at the end of his first move. So I've taken the liberty of taking two moves with Thurismund, except the second move is 60 ft.

Agate recalls that huge earth elementals are resistant to all weapons (i.e. DR/-), are known to be less effective against airborne or waterborne opponents, are not particularly crystalline.
She also recalls that Red is what is known as a huge magma elemental, with the usual traits of elementals. (Typically: N Huge outsider (earth, elemental, extraplanar, fire)) Beyond this, however, she can't remember anything distinctive about them.
Armed with this knowledge, the dwarven wizard casts stunning barrier on herself and moves up into the fray.
@Alaric, actually Troi already cast Haste on everyone but Sindelle. Go ahead and retcon your move as needed.
I'm going to wait for Alaric's retcon since it will potentially change what the elementals do on their turn.

Whoops! I totally missed Troi's Haste as well. Can I retcon too? The pathfinders move forward but the two enormous elemental creatures don't seem to pay any attention to them at all, and continue trading blows.
First, Red slams twice at Blue over the heads of the cowering dwarves...
Red slam, PA, hypnotic stare, aura of rage: 1d20 + 14 - 3 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 14 - 3 - 3 + 2 = 19
dmg, PA: 2d6 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 + 6 = 22 + fire dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 1

Blue reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
... Red's first slam hits the earth elemental but the second misses. The hulking earth elemental somehow manages to avoid catching fire from the magma elemental's burning fists.
Then, Blue attempts to return the favor...
Blue slam, PA, EM: 1d20 + 17 - 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 17 - 3 + 1 = 19

dmg, PA, EM: 2d8 + 9 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 5) + 9 + 6 + 1 = 25
... both of the earth elemental's blows hit home soundly.
The fighting is sending bits of rock and shards of the tunnel flying everywhere, as the poor miners cower beneath them.

Sindelle heard Troi's calling her, but hasn't been feeling like she's been doing too much during this delve, and the sounds of people in need of help drove her on. plus she doesn't benefit much from haste ^^

GM, Sindelle will delay in case the dwarves or her own party get hurt. If it looks like the dwarves are being hit, she will come off delay and get within 30 feet of them to channel healing energy. Thanks!
Your boy, Troi

Oh no! Troi yells out loud towards the magma creature in Ignan. Not a quenching, water elemental!
He then concentrates on making the creature think just that type of threat is next to it.
Casting Greater Oneiric Horror on Red. If it fails a DC 19 Will save (for which its taking the -4 Stare penalty), it will spend its full turn 'attacking' its greatest fear. Like Glitterdust/hold person it gets a new save at the end of each of its turns, but each round it spends attacking the illusion it takes 1 Strength damage, and even if it makes a save and breaks free its fatigued for a minute.
He then calls in Common to his allies. If red and glowing starts to act strange right now, that's a good thing. It might keep it up for a bit

Roni sends a blast of flame towards the earth elemental. At first it seems that he will be very unlucky, but he calls upon the luck of the gods to aid him and his blast of flame lands squarely upon the poor rocky creature...
Reflex DC 19: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19... who turns out to be surprisingly agile.
@Sindelle, with your Deathwatch ability, you can see that the dwarves are already "fighting off death (alive with 4 or more hit points)".
Troi sends a vision of a magma elemental's worst fear...
Will DC 19, hypnotic stare: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 - 4 = 3
... if a huge magma elemental can look startled and afraid, this one does!
As if things weren't bad enough for the poor magma elemental, Loxx unleashes a series of quarterstaff blows, which completely smash the fiery creature to bits.
@Thurismund, since Red was destroyed before you took your turn, I'm assuming you would have moved up and single-attacked Blue. Let me know if this is incorrect.
Thurismund's movement forward provokes an attack from Blue, who seems to be both delighted at the destruction of his hated magma enemy and infuriated at the destruction of his beloved elemental brethren...

Thurismund returns the favor with a solid blow of his own.
@Alaric, since Red was destroyed before you took your turn, I'm assuming you would have moved up and single-attacked Blue. Let me know if this is incorrect.
With his phantom having led the way, Alaric now also follows up with a powerful strike of his own against the hapless Blue elemental.
With the battle going so badly, the poor earth elemental retreats in confusion, withdrawing directly into the earth and sinking far, far, far out of the reach of the vile pathfinder invaders.
Combat over! Pathfinders are victorious!
The surviving miners thank the pathfinders profusely before making their way toward the outer keep. One hands the pathfinders his pickaxe as a parting gift, claiming that a proper digging tool is handy when exploring the mines. Runes carved into the pickaxe’s handle spell the name “Khargall.”
For saving all four of the dwarves you achieve an exceptional success. For your interest, if the battle had continued into round 3 a cave in would have triggered, killing two of the dwarves, and another would have killed the others the following round. :-)

It takes the group another fifteen minutes to travel to the Armorers' district. Shillelagh and Deathwatch have both expired.
An impassive bronze statue of an anthropomorphic pig-bull stands here, grimly bearing a bowl containing a glowing green statuette. Although a few coins are scattered across the floor, the surface is otherwise clean. Eleven ironbound chests line the north and west walls.

Your boy, Troi
|
Troi looks around the room. This is supposed to be the Armory, right? Looks more like the treasury to me. And definitely less guards than I'd think.
He moves into the room and tries to open one of the chests. Maybe there's some hammers in here?
He also side-eyes the pigman statue, nervous about yet another strange figure alone in a chamber.
Know Religion to see if he thinks this is some weird demon/dark god effigy?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
| GM Abraham |
The chests are unlocked and filled with coin, gems, pieces of freshly forged armor and weapons.
Troi identifies this idol as Ghrode, an obscure mythological being believed to serve Torag by inspecting the work of blacksmiths and gemcutters.
When he looks closely at it, he sees that there is a quote etched into its lips in Dwarven:
The bright item in the offering bowl (which is held 10 feet off the ground) is a carved jade bull the size of a dwarf’s head.
Agate
|
Agate comes close enough to look at the statue clearly and translate the inscription. While there, she also casts an expert eye at the jade bull.
Appraise: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
"Ah, Ghrode. I haven't made much for you to inspect lately..." she murmurs. She ponders the bowl a minute, then digs in her coin pouch.
Agate is a former jeweler who still tries to keep her hand in with occasional practice (i.e. it's her Day Job roll). Assuming nothing interesting has interrupted her by now, she'll put 20gp in the bowl, which is what she earned during her last downtime.
Sindelle Lifewater
|
Sindelle will listen to Troi and Agate as they inspect the idol, and will then cast Detect Magic then Detect Poison (remembering the issues earlier through some of the other districts) and will scrutinize any auras she detects while also alerting the others if she finds any.

Agate thinks that the jade bull clearly has some value. Her coins clink in the bowl but the statue makes no response.
Sindelle does not detect any source of poison.
I'm realizing that this particular encounter may be difficult for you to sort out without having received the handout (which you didn't get because you didn't visit the Armorers' district in the earlier section). So...
Just then, your old friend Chiara Venator comes running by. "No time to chat, but as long as you're here, I thought you might be interested in Shaine's instructions for this area of Jormurdun...." She hands you a copy of her notes.
"We must discover the secret of Jormurdun’s fabled forges. If you happen upon any of its blacksmiths, persuade them to share their technique. We have also heard reports of shrines to Ghrode, a shadowy entity who acts as something of a bogeyman to craftspeople. Retrieve one of the offerings left for it, and we shall use that to study the cult further."
Thurismund Ir'Ganak

Thurismund grumbles, but fearing no man or god steps up and grabs the jade figurine.

Thurismund is able to seize the jade bull without any difficulty. However, the statue emits an enormous shout in response! Agate backs up when she sees what Thurismund is doing, but not far enough!

Whew, Agate, you just make this save due to Hardy. Failing it would have killed you outright! In fact, if you still had that negative level you would have just failed and died. Yikes!
Unfortunately, this is one of those dumb Pathfinder traps where you take some damage and are stunned for 1 round (if you failed your save) and are deafened for 15 rounds, but it doesn't matter because there's nothing else that happens after this. I find these sorts of traps really stupid, paizo, if you are listening... For retrieving the statue you achieve one success. I'll move us along to the next area shortly. Feel free to heal up in the meantime.

Go ahead and heal up. Moving us along to the other Armorers' district encounter just to keep things moving.
After the terrible shout from the statue of Ghrode, things return - more or less - to normal and the pathfinders are able to continue exploring the Armorers' District.
The sounds of metal striking metal, the roar of a forge, and a song sung in a deep baritone echoes down this rock-strewn tunnel. The heat from one of the fabled forges of Jormurdun is already oppressive even at this distance.
Clang of metal sings our song
May our union’s life be long.”
Alaric ir'Ganak
|
Alaric, hearing the dwarven words, nods appreciatively.
Is there some sort of knowledge check I could attempt (poorly) to determine what's causing people to sing that? Is there a wedding going on?
Your boy, Troi
|
Owwwwwwwwwwww Troi whines as he smacks his ear repeatedly, trying to hear again. While still deaf, he nonetheless complains So, gold and riches: dwarves don't care. Little green bull: hands off. Could have used a warning... even as he doubts the others can hear.
When noise finally reaches his once more, the aasimar limps over to Sindelle. Hey, mind using my stick on me. That statue's got some lungs on it for a carving.
----
When they approach the heat of an active forge and the sounds (precious sound!) of dwarven singing, Troi asks Hey, what's the commotion up ahead? Another dwarf in a spot of trouble?
Sindelle Lifewater
|
As soon as that explosion goes off, Sindelle reels back then immediately cuts all life links so she can stay on her feet to heal everyone else for a second.
channel 1: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4) = 11 (+6 for Sindelle)
channel 2: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3) = 8 (+6 for Sindelle)
(Sindelle down 8, 3 channels left)
After this she'll re-establish the link with Agate, Loxx, and Troi, chugging healing potions while her life link helps them recover at the same time.
...up to you GM if you want me to roll for all o fthe probably lots of potions she's about to drink seeing how my healing dice clearly want me dead? :P
Roni the Flame Alchemist
|
Roni pulls out a wand of cure light wounds, and asks Sindelle to tap him with it to heal off the missing 1 hp.
As he notices Sindelle pulling out a bunch of potions, he steps a bit closer.
"I think using a wand would be cheaper. You can grab mine."
After healing himself, CLW wand has 42 charges left. If you end up using Roni's wand, just tell me how many charges to cross out! ^_^
