GM Batpony |
Following the tracks eventually leads you into some bushes. Immediately as you approach, a dark skinned, short haired woman in an explorer's outfit steps out with a limp due to some injuries. With a finger to her mouth, she ask that everybody remains in silence. Huddling closer, she whispers. "Thank goodness, if you're here that means Ambrus got my message. The Minotaur's, they attacked us and stole our goods, including that of the Inheritor's Clasp!. I've been keeping a keen eye on them, come closer." She says as she leads you into the shrubbery and points out to the other side. Some 40ft away from you, a group of Minotaur's, about half a dozen stand around engaged in debate based on their body language. "I do not know what they're discussing, but in their current state, I'm uncertain, but I think that we could parley for the clasp." She suggest.
Potrait of Inisa is in handouts. What do you do?
Merisiel Restest |
Merisiel watches the Minotaurs debate and whispers her thoughts ”Parley? I’m not sure what we could offer them in trade, also I don’t think any of us speak Minotaur. I’m with Valeros hit them hard and fast.”
Seoni Playtest |
Seoni stops trying to fix her hair and says, "I could use my Staff of Divination to cast Comprehend Language which would let someone understand what the minotaurs are saying. There might be a chance we could figure out what caused them to attack the caravan as well as us. Then we could decide whether to attack them or not. I also have a potion of the same spell which we could use to allow them to understand us if we do negotiate. The only thing is whoever is going to listen to them needs to be within 30 feet of them for it to work. I could cast invisibility on someone so they can get closer."
She holds up her staff and arches an eyebrow questioningly.
GM Batpony |
Inisa sighs, "There are at least six of them, I was hoping no more violence would be shed." She pulls out from her coat and holds a wooden unholy symbol of Baphomet. "I pulled this off from one of their fallen at the caravan site, thinking we could pose as a follower of their own. But if you insist on forcing surrender, I am by no means able to fight in my current state, but I am definitely able to speak their language. We need not sneak upon them, they are in a state of disarray, I'm sure we could hope to parley!" Inira insist...
Elinnea's Pregen |
Amiri stares at Inisa a little suspiciously. "You seem quite set on having a talk with these minotaurs. Is there something you're not telling us? Well, if we must we must. I certainly don't want to pose as a follower of the evil minotaur god. But we might as well find out what they're talking about before we fight." She hefts her large sword over one shoulder, ready to bring it to bear if it comes to that. Which she fully expects it to do.
To be clear, I'm supporting the option of trying to approach them openly, and either using Seoni's staff for someone to understand or Inisa to translate.
GM Batpony |
Without skipping a beat, she responds "My goal is clear it's for the clasp, and I cannot retrieve it if I die. There are 6 of them standing there, and who knows how many more within vicinity, I rather be foolish than die a fool."
For:Amiri
Fight:
GM Batpony |
If no one else contributes, we'll go with the non-violent approach in 12 hours.
Merisiel Restest |
Merisiel shuggs, ”Sure try your way, but I’ll stay hidden. Seoni, might be best if you cast your spell to follow the conversation.”
Merisiel stays hidden in the bushes.
Stealth if needed: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Seoni Playtest |
"I have to either cast a spell on one of them so they understand us, get one to drink the potion to understand us, or hope one of them understands a language one of us speaks. Also, whoever is good at getting people to get along should be the one whom I cast the spell on for our team. Everyone else needs to make sure they help that person or don't do anything to hamper their communications. So how do we do this?"
GM Batpony |
Also in anticipation, I had uploaded a map in the handouts, please place your tokens accordingly and make your relevant skill checks per your chosen social or exploration tactic... i.e. Sneak, Defend, Conversing. If you're not choosing to sneak, please place yourselves within 10ft of Inisa. We may not need the map but should things go sour, we know the drill.
Elinnea's Pregen |
Amiri stays between Inisa and Seoni as they approach, just observing for now but ready to throw in a threatening glare if they need one.
Amiri will be Looking Out to watch for signs of trouble should this go awry.
I think Seoni is the best at diplomacy, so if it turns out they don't speak Common then she should be the one of any of us to get the comprehend languages spell.
Seoni Playtest |
Seoni will do the Diplomacy. She will use a Focus Point to activate the Lesser Staff of Divination with the minotaurs talking to focus the language upon.
"I will have to convince them to let me cast the same spell on one of them before we can really get around to talking about what is going on."
"Put up your weapons and try not to do anything to antagonize them. If they attack, then go all out, but not until then. Let's try to talk this through so we can find out what is going on first before making any rash decisions. Ready? Let's go."
Seoni begins to move towards the minotaurs with a slow and easy going stride and a smile on her face. One hand holds her staff like it's a walking staff and the other is outstretched with her hand raised up in greeting.
GM Batpony |
As you step out of the bushes and reveal yourself to the Minotaur party, their heads turn and their eyes lock on to you. However, the majority don't immediately react with violence. The Minotaur group parts slightly to reveal their presumed leader, standing in the centre of the group, a female Minotaur in an unusual and elaborate outfit of black and red, wearing the unholy symbol of Baphomet, minotaur’s head with ruby eyes, but one not made of wood like the earlier ones you found, instead of brass.
To your surprise, she addresses you in the common tongue. "Speak, what has brought you to our territory, if you do not wish death, leave now.' She says sternly.
Those conversing, make your Diplomacy/Intimidate checks as you converse.
Seoni Playtest |
Seoni will use her Diplomacy skills in negotiating with the minotaur.
Diplomacy (E): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
"We have come to discuss the reason for your raid on a caravan recently. Those people did not try to harm you in any way, yet you attacked them mercilessly. What is your reason for that attack?"
GM Batpony |
Anyone would like to aid or make their own checks? That did not meet the DC to convince the minotaur.
JM Playtest Kyra |
Kyra clears her throat. "My colleague speaks truly. What has caused you to assault those who did you no harm?" Her words are clipped and stern and she fingers her holy symbol as she speaks.
Diplo-Aid: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
GM Batpony |
The leading minotaur looks sternly towards the group, unimpressed so far at your opening remarks.
Still need another diplo-aid success!
GM Batpony |
Just to help out, alternative is to attempt intimidate, or go into combat immediately. Let me know which way is preferred.
Elinnea's Pregen |
Amiri sighs internally, but tries to follow Seoni's lead. She holds up both hands to show that she's not about to attack, and adds, "We're telling the truth, you know. It would go better for everyone if we can talk about this calmly." Mostly better for you, she thinks, but bites her tongue before the words can escape.
Diplomacy aid maybe???: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
If that doesn't work and I can still try to intimidate I'll do that next; otherwise Amiri is always up for a good fight.
GM Batpony |
Aid DC's are now a 15, and there's critical failures result in actual failure of the check!
"I have no interest to parley with weak humans! Leave now or we shall kill you!" The Minotaur responds with some hostility in her voice.
Intimidate anyone? or fight?
Seoni Playtest |
Seoni will try Intimidate.
"I said stop attacking caravans or I'll bring down the wrath of Absalom upon you and geld every male minotaur in your tribe!"
Intimidate: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
GM Batpony |
The leading minotaur laughs as if to mock you, but entertains and respects your position. "You are clearly outnumbered and out-strengthed, yet you show great courage. I respect that. If you would demonstrate your strength against my warriors in a friendly spar, the wounded shall surrender and you would earn my favour in winning the fight. Do you agree to my terms?"
In terms of rules for a "friendly spar". Surrendering at wounded means once you've reach below half health. However you may choose to remain in the fight by cheating, i.e. Deception check as a free action each time he takes damage that leaves him below half HP to remain in the fight.
Seoni Playtest |
"Of course we will accept your contest. Amiri here will represent us in the contest. We are honored that you offer to engage us in a contest to show strength. It also shows great wisdom in doing so. Amiri! Step forward and show our new friends your fighting prowess!" says Seoni who is quite eager to find a way not to engage in melee combat herself.
GM Batpony |
Seoni, Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Amiri, Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Minotaur,Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
"I admire your courage of convinction, but it will be a test of all your strengths." She responds to seoni. "Let the fight begin!"
The Minotaur crowd takes a step back as three of their finest and strongest warriors step forward grinning while swinging their great-axes wildly. The red skinned one looks a little younger than the other two. Immediately the juvenile bull charges recklessly towards Amiri!
Red: Powerful Charge ++, Strike +
Gore, Powerful Charge: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 13 - 2 = 30P: 2d8 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (3, 1) + 12 - 2 = 14

Valeros - Dungeon Master S |
Valeros: 50/68. Back down after 34 damage.
"Ow! That hurt!"
Valeros strides in close and swings with everything he's got:
ATK 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20 for DMG: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (7, 7) + 4 = 18
ATK 2: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (16) + 12 - 5 = 23 for DMG: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9
JM Playtest Kyra |
Kyra grits her teeth as the battle begins before she can even draw her blade. She does so and attacks the minotaur who attacked her after stepping up to him!
Kyra vs Blue: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 6) + 3 = 10 damage!
Seoni Playtest |
Is this a 3 on 3 match or is Seoni allowed to cast magic to support the group? I think it's a best of 3 on 3 match, but want to make sure.
Merisiel Restest |
Merisiel sneaks around the tree and attacks the Green Minotaur from the side hopefully from stealth.
Actions:

GM Batpony |
Valeros beings combat strong by hitting the minotaur twice with his sword. Merisel jumps from the shadows but does not have the same luck as the her rapier bounces of the armor of the creature.
Kyra brings the fight to the minotaur and shows that she is a capable swordswoman by striking at the beast!
There's is no rules limiting use of magic or any other abilities, only rules is the request to back down at half HP

Mechanically Amiri can take actions now without making a deception check, but if the minotaur attacks her, each time she takes damage she must roll a deception.

Seoni Playtest |
Seoni moves and then casts Glitterdust so that the burst catches the Red and Blue Minotaurs, but none of the party members. I think that puts it in the lower bottom right of the Red minotaur.
DC is 19.
Elinnea's Pregen |
Before she even has a chance to fully draw her weapon, one of the young ones is on her with a vicious greataxe. She tries to dodge out of the way but is not prepared. With a pained grunt she winces drops to one knee. "Geh! How- frustrating! But I yield." She hobbles back away from the minotaur to give her allies more room. "Take him out for me!"
I'm assuming this doesn't count as refusing a personal challenge of strength, since it's the rules of the challenge itself. Amiri's Deception is very bad, so she's not going to be able to bluff her way through even if she wanted to.
GM Batpony |
I interpret it the same way Amiri.
Red Minotaur Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Dazzled for 1 minute
Blue Minotaur Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 Unaffected
The young, hot-blooded, and inexperience minotaur is caught off guard by Seoni's dazzling causing her to be temporary blinded by an overstimulation of the senses. The elder minotaur immediately turns his face away not to get caught in the glitterdust.
Amiri sadly backs down as she realises she has sustained injuries from the Minotaur's early charge.
The minotaur then continue they pursuit against the pathfinders. Green eyes continues knocking Valeros. The young minotaur turns to try to attack Valeros as well, in hopes his vision does not hinder him!

Kyra feels the bite of the bull-men's blades and groans. While she'd like to keep going, she cannot in good conscious lie to win a competition. She yields, and as soon as the contest is over, offers to heal all combatants' wounds.
GM Batpony |
Sorry for the delay, Internet at home has been down since Monday, I've resorted to bringing my personal stuff to work to use the WiFi!
Valeros and Kyra raise their hands in defeat as they realise any more injuries would likely cause them to succumb to their wounds and would result a combat of bad faith. But not before Merisiel jumps in to take advantage of the distraction and strike the green eyed minotaur where it hurts the most. He yields and walks away knowing he is too badly hurt.
Not a crit but enough damage has been done for it to yield

Seoni Playtest |
Seoni takes a five-foot step back and casts another Lightning Bolt at the minotaurs while hoping this one does more damage.
"This is ridiculous having to use all my spells for this contest!"
Lightning Bolt: 4d12 ⇒ (8, 3, 2, 4) = 17

Merisiel is up!
