Hello all,
Yes, yet another recruitment thread for Rise of the Runelords! Aside from the release of the anniversary edition, there's another reason this path just won't die: because it's awesome! I'm looking for 4-6 dedicated players, willing to commit to posting at least once a day. Good roleplaying and interesting group dynamics are always of great interest to me. I'm not going to use any fancy tools - just this messageboard and it's built in dice roller, and google docs will provide simple, but very useful, maps for combat, as well as any visual aids for gameplay.
Here's the guidelines:
- 25 point buy;
- no traits :-(
- max starting gold to equip your character;
- books allowed: core, APG, UM, UC
- Race guide: core races are generally all I will accept. I'll give consideration to Aasimar, Tieflings, and the four elemental races from the featured races section, however.
- I'll consider 3rd party stuff if it can be found on d20pfsrd.com, but I'll admit here that I'd prefer to stick to paizo-sourced core material. Still, if you're passionate about trying something out, give it a try!
- I don't use any really far out houserules - pretty much everything will go down as per the core rules. A couple of changes for clerics - i) they get their heavy armor proficiency back; and ii) instead of automatically getting access to the extended spell lists from the APG, UM and UC, you can add three spells to your known list per level up.
- as an addendum to that, paladins and rangers add one spell from the expanded list to their core list at each level up. Yes, rangers, you can still have access to gravity bow :-)
What I'm looking for:
- a fully-designed character with a backstory and a complete physical description;
- your reason for being in Sandpoint - presumably related to the Swallowtail festival, but not necessarily!
- All submissions are welcome! I'll give special consideration to players who have been turned down for other PbM games, in particular other RotRL games. Please let me know in your application.
I'll give this thread until friday, August 10th before I make final decisions on which characters will be chosen. So, have fun, make a character you'd enjoy playing, and let me see them!

Digger Chandler |

Digger here almost made it into another RoTRL game. I can get him up to your specs very quickly.
Edit: Here's Digger's life story.
On the road, there was always someone who'd love to tell a great story to a young boy. Tock's favorite stories were all about Cayden Cailean. He marveled over how the human-cum-god went through life with nothing more than a sense of adventure and a chaotic tendency towards luck. As time went on he became a devout worshipper, though without a real cleric around, his theology isn't exactly orthodox. He loves nothing more than chaos and luck. He spreads it wherever he goes, constantly spinning tales about himself and the world around him.
Tock loves nothing more than telling a story. Whether it's meant to be fictional or a lie, he is in his element. He befuddled his parents as a child, getting away with more and more as time went on and they tired of trying to figure out "the truth." One day at the market, his convoluted reasonings on why he should be allowed to drink as much ale as he wants became so intense that there was no way to refute them.
Also at this market was Scarnetti, who was impressed with the youth's force of personality. He later dug up some information on the child and periodically kept tabs on the boy's development. When he reached 16, already tall and handsome as most any man, Tock was hired to work as a bartender at a tavern Scarnetti had influence upon.
His oft-stated goal is "to live the greatest story of all time." He generally believes in the greater good of life, for what is more chaotic than sapient life? However, he is a near-compulsive liar and cheat and hedonist. His ethics and moral code are flexible to say the least. His deepest dream, which he would never reveal, is actually to garner enough power to conquer the Starstone and join his hero in godhood.
Digger is tall, in great shape, and very handsome. He is frustratingly aware of these facts. His story-spinning is aided all the more with that charming smile. He has the medium-brown hair of his father, and the small but expressive eyes of his mother. He dresses stylishly, bordering on foppishly. He always makes eye contact and remembers people's names. He loves a good joke, and has almost perfected the art of friendly teasing.
However, he is conceited and sometimes downright spiteful. He feels a life of adventure is basically owed to him, and prefers the story of the Drunken God to the slow deterioration and death of his parents. He will not go out quietly, but he can hold a quiet grudge for years before acting upon it.
He enjoys creating other identities and disguises, filling each in with elaborate personalities and backstories. He seeks adventuring with characters fit for the greatest story of all time. His friendship is unswervingly loyal (unless it would make a REALLY good story).
Despite his demons and flaws, he does hate actual, true evil. His definition of it might just be a bit more specific than others'.

@ Digger - I like this guy! The role-playing potential of such a character is tremendous. I like the idea of an inter-party dynamic where things aren't necessarily entirely happy and harmonious all the time, but where party members stand up for their allies when crunch time hits. I can see this guy fitting into that sort of dynamic.
Having said that, I did notice that Digger doesn't seem to have any melee weaponry. There is going to be a fair bit of combat through this module, and throughout the AP overall. Is that a deliberate design decision?

Thandion |

Hi, just curious why you have a sad face next to traits.
This is Thandion he was made for another game so I'll have to alter stats for your game, I'll so that shortly. However I want you to know I am running this AP as a table top game currently so know spilers (they won't effect my play but I know them). I am happy to be rejected because of this, just let me know.

![]() |

This is Adrien. I made him a while back to play in a campaign that died in the middle of the first combat session. All of your questions are already answered in his backstory. I am a dedicated player and would make a consistent addition to your game.
I think there are a couple of very minor kinks that would need to be settled (removal of traits, adding 5 build points, adjustment of skills, possible revision of gear). I look forward to answering any specific questions you might have.

DM_MadGoat |

@ Thandion - I put the little unhappy face next to the no traits stipulation because I know some people won't like that decision. Many players assume traits are a part of character creation - heck, they're in the players guides, right? - but they're an optional rule and I don't really care for them.
As for having knowledge of the AP - it's been around for a long while, I've no doubt many players have played in or heard about it or read the books. I trust my players not to metagame; and I reserve the right to change things around to suit me and my players.

DM_MadGoat |

@ Adrien
@ Tessara - I like your character! Five times is a lot to try and not find a game - though having said that, it can be pretty competitive sometimes. I'll keep you at the top of my list of candidates.

DM_MadGoat |

@ Brevyre - thanks for the cleric! I do intend to include at least one divine spellcaster in the group, and you're the only one to submit so far.
@ Adrien - I wouldn't mind if you dropped by midweek sometime. I'm going to pose a few questions to all candidates that I'll want you to answer in character, so I can get a feel for what each character is like, as well as everyone's writing style.
@ Digger - yes, with max gold you should be able to outfit your character quite well.

DM_MadGoat |

Submissions so far:
- Digger Chandler: human male Rogue
- Tessara: elf female Witch
- Thandion: elf male Magus
- Adrien Duran Mandreiv: aasimar male Fighter
- Brevyre Silverkin: human male Cleric
Keep your submissions coming, folks! For those who have already submitted a character, thank you! Please keep an eye on this thread, I'll be posing your characters a few questions midweek that I'll be looking to have answered in-character. It gives me a better handle on your characters' personality, and your writing style.
Off to bed, I'll check the thread again in the morning :-)

Dr. Masuta "The Doc" Hakase |

Dr. Masuta Hakase at your service. I am an up and coming alchemical doctor who specializes in physical enhancement and prowess, as well as restoration.
The Doc is a brute with his mutagen and a backup healer/support with his extracts. Think of him as a Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde kind of person. I will get his appearance and background up soon after I finish reading all the info in the RotR players guide. But so far I am thinking he will be from a family of Tian immigrants that moved to Varisia some time in the past and he still shows interest in the ways of his families homeland in addition to the "western" way of life.

Digger Chandler |

Coolcoolcool, guys. I'm liking this. I tweaked Digger a bit more ...slightly less smart so that he gets a strength bonus. You also might notice the amount of flammables her carries ...turns out Digger digs a fire. Between that and his Cleric buddy/rival up front and a decent AC and Stealth, he's combat ready.

Digger Chandler |

I can see Adrien as being friend to both Digger and Brevyre and toning down their respective excesses when he gets in town. Scoria and Brevyre have an obvious connection with the cathedral. Digger would either pick on or defend (or both) Doc with their shared Tian heritage. The elves might know each other. A flirty witch could catch Adrien and Digger's eyes at some point ...liking the way all these are working.
I do really like the idea of Brevyre and Digger having a fairly complicated friendship ...what's the recent buzzword, frenemies? Guys with similar goals but vastly different ways of looking at the world.

Grigore the Grim |

Submitting Grigore the Grim, former pit fighter and current militia member/ sometimes actor in Sandpoint.
I submitted him for another game and didn't make the cut. Just need to drop the traits and add a little equipment (and it'll slightly affect my skills from one trait)
Thanks for your consideration!

DM_MadGoat |

Good morning all! Here's the list of submissions so far....

Hello everyone! Just as an aside, a couple more notes about this game:
- As much as I like to use the XP system, I reserve the right to ask you to level up your characters at specific story points. The module makes certain assumptions about your level at certain story points, and I want to make sure you're equiped to handle the challenges you face.
- As characters are generated on a 25 point buy, and given max gold (and we're likely going with a party of six characters) I'm going to need to increase the difficulty of combat encounters by the tiniest wee bit, just to make sure that you won't romp through what should be challenging encounters.
- We'll be following standard PbP posting protocols: Bold font is used for things your character is saying; italics should be used if your character is thinking something, and you want us to share in those thoughts; OOC tags should be used for out of character questions or comments, such as cursing the dice roller or asking a question; and regular text should be used to describe your characters actions.
- use the spoiler tag for private communication to the GM or another player. I know that prospective players on these boards can be trusted not to click on spoilers that aren't intended for them. Please note that secret, character to character communication should be done via spoiler tag as well, rather than via PM; I should be kept in the loop on all in character communications.
- I will almost always have you roll the dice for your actions; I don't believe in keeping skill checks secret, for example. If combat breaks out, and a character hasn't posted in good time, then I may DMPC your character to keep things going. I also prefer to have each character roll their own initiative in combat.
Any questions or concerns, please let me know. And keep those submissions coming, folks! There's still plenty of time before this friday to get them in.

Grig 'n Dig would have a few things to talk about, too.
Grigore has quite a few things to say to just about everybody. :-) I see him as someone trying to relive his glory days, kind of like a former athlete. He loves to talk about his old arena matches, is shocked if someone hasn't heard of him, etc.
Oh, and I finished his equipment.
Just ignore the traits and he's good to go.

Azrael Dukshi |

Any connections that Scoria would have to someone working in the Cathedral would most likely be a passing acquaintance. She is not particularly sociable, and seems rather dispassionate about most things. You might strike up a decent conversation with her about stonemasonry, or Irori, or techniques to train the body, mind and spirit. History is also something that she has an interest in, especially old architecture.
The closest she's ever had to a friend is her master and foster father, so trying to strike up a friendship, let alone a romantic interest, will take a great deal of patience on the pursuing party. It takes a long time for her to express herself emotionally.

Grigore the Grim |

The armored soldier chuckles, then speaks matter-of-factly:
You sir, have never been to Cheliax. I went there, once. Got a pretty strong rule of law there, as I recall. Plenty of hunger and disease, been at war as long as I can remember, and sure as hell have more death there than in less "civilized" places. I saw a man who stole a loaf of bread--he was clapped in the stocks until he died. Law didn't do much to protect him. It's people that stave off death and war, whether they're part of a government, or fighting against it. Of course, you have nothing to worry about here in good ole Sandpoint. My friends and I will keep you safe, have no doubt of that.
He claps Brevyre on the back and raises a glass to him.

Brevyre Silverkin |

"Cheliax is an evil nation, ruled by devils. Law when combined with Good natured rulers is how peace and prosperity are achieved. Peace only exists when everyone works together for the greater good. But that is not to say that peace should be more important than annihilating evils off of this Plane and every other Plane."
