@ Fen: Yes, I was just thinking we should have a chat about that. There IS an unattended parrot on board, as well as a wide array of rats, spiders and centipedes. There is probably a cat or two as well, and I'd believe it if you said there was a monkey stowed away atop the mainmast as well. I'm open to any other familiar that you want, provided you can make a case for it being on a ship at sea.
You could make one of the chickens from the mess your familiar.
There are also stats for dwarf caimans (tiny crocodiles), seals, dodos and giant isopods (jumbo shrimp?) in the module.
Ornotck Kalsor |
i think we would have to wait till someone can cast something that would let that isopod talk in common, be it share language or comp language. but still that would be awesome. all bow down to the king prawn
DM Nerk |
I'm saying there is a pi(arrrrrr squared) percent chance the parrot has a wooden beak.
A question regarding transparency. What I'd been thinking is that when you are attempting to win friends and influence people, you dice it out and you roleplay your action, and your results are delivered in the NPCs role-played response (as with Ornotck/Tilly).
This puts you, the player, at a bit of a disadvantage, not knowing the game-effect of your schmoozing, which blinds you a little. On the other hand, it feels like better story-telling. I'm of two minds on it, so weigh in if you have thoughts. Would you guys prefer to be told the status changes in no uncertain terms, or keep it RPed?

Speaking of Tim Curry, just watched Rocky Horror for the first time a few weeks ago. It's my wife's favorite movie so I was surprised she didn't get me to watch it sooner. She said that every boyfriend she has ever had was never able to make it past the part where Tim Curry comes down in the elevator in full drag.
So she was happy to know that I thought the movie was awesome
Lorelei |
I approve of your wife's taste in movies. My husband had watched the whole thing through before we even met, so I didn't have to make him watch it. :)
And muppet related, but not Tim Curry related, everyone should watch Labyrinth. One of my favorite movies from childhood. :)
DM Nerk |
Bah. Missed questions when the page turned. Sorry.
YES, Fen, you little lush. Two rations of rum=the effects twice.
Yes, Lorelei, the rum is not your friend. It's there to keep you docile. It's also only a DC 10 stealth to dump it.
@ Havok: To my eternal glory and/or shame, once upon a time, I played Riff (the butler) in a Rocky Horror floor show. It was a lot of fun.
@ Lorelei: I was also a big fan of Labyrinth, and (to bring it back to Tim Curry) Legend, which has defined goblins for me ever since. Sadly, I'm pretty much the only one who sees them that way.

Haha, what a funny bunch of players we have here. My wife was a long time attendee to the local midnight showing of Rocky Horror, and dragged me along when we started dating. And yes, I made it through the whole thing.
Funny, I was just talking about Labyrinth yesterday with some friends, who hadn't seen it since childhood and I was making plans to watch it with them to remedy that. Dance, magic dance.

I watched Highlander the other year, and was struck by how simple the fight scenes were. No wuxia crap with wires, just two guys beating the crap out of each other with swords in a parking garage. I had a fit of nostalgia and had to watch Iron Monkey.
And oddly, was listening to queen while doing dishes yesterday.
What is the other version of Legend?
Ornotck Kalsor |
i say we role play out the relationship and when they do something helpful to us, might put it on a chart to show us who is on our side, or at least who is friendly to who. ie if tally finds me sneaking latter and just ignores it, update the chart to show she is friendly to Ornotck, as an idea. or another idea is a chart to show who has interacted with who of the crew. so we dont have to go through pages of game play to see who we tried to influence or had meaningful interaction with. well other then being whiped

There's nothing different about it except for the soundtrack: the trippy '80s synthpop and pan-pipes was replaced with generic orchestration.

Poor Planning Department:
I've never run one of these online before. Thoughts on how to handle the combat map?
I'm perfectly happy to just do it in text and try to be reasonable about things like threatened squares, line of effect and flanking. That means relying on my judgement a lot, which I know my RL group would scream bloody murder about.

There's various options, all of which I'm comfortable with:
- Hand-wave and not worry about it. In a PbP, this is sometimes a good option just to keep things moving more quickly. It's pretty much how we did things back in 2nd Edition and nobody really complained - but then the game has changed significantly since then too.
- Google Docs. You can use a spreadsheet to create the map grid, and use text and colors to define the map. It's not pretty, but it's functional and you can even allow players to modify the map to make their own movements if you desire. example
- Image hosting. Pull the image from the PDF, number the grid, and host it somewhere like box.com, dropbox, whatever. This is the method I've used most when running games, because it allows the players to see the pretty artwork. If you've got some skill, you can also add effects such as darkness, lighting, etc to the map. example
- Combination. I've seen combinations of all these, such as pulling the images from the PDF and then hosting it on google docs with movable tokens for each player. Little bit more work, but the payoff can be really nice. example

Extremely helpful.
Probably something like what a responsible DM would post at the top of each new round.
If only we had a responsible DM....
round 3 (updated)
lorelei attacks sy hits for 4 non leathal
odiseo enmaddens(?) Jape
foes
aretta trys to go up the stairs but slips: returns and stomps Havok. So actually, that stomp should be next round
Jape self-abuses
sy and fipp both land punches
havok bites and misses
fen aims to please

While running the Godsmouth Ossuary pbp, I would break it down like this at the top of each round:
Initiative
Kua- 22 (step back)
Zombie- 19 (attack)
Uwais/Waya- 14
Sister Mara- 12
Detressa- 7
Yang- 5
Slotting in who had already declared actions, where they were moving, etc. It does require a lot of book-keeping to DM online, but it does also keep everyone on the same page to have a round by round list and a post to wrap up everyone's actions and reveal the results.
DM Nerk |
House Rule
I use critical fumbles, which work like critical hits.
If you roll a 1, roll the attack again. If you miss again, your bowstring breaks, you drop your weapon, you fall on your butt, etc. To "fix" whatever broke will take your whole next round if you are out of melee (stringing your bow), or make you take a move and provoke an AoO in melee (get on your feet, pick up your weapon). Obviously, you aren't required to restring your bow or get off the ground, it's just the most likely result.

cant you do your hexes without your pet? also funny thought to cast putrefy food and water on that bully's meal when you get your pet. seeing as it is a cantrip.
also funny how as far as we know our orical is just talking funny at the foes. no visible effect after all.

Soon, soon, soon.
I'm going to be on the road through the weekend, so pretty sporadic about posting for the next few days. Your tasks for the day:
Fen 1d6 ⇒ 6 It's been a day since Captain Harrigan killed anyone in cold blood. To help stave off his depression, the officers are preparing a feast. You are to slaughter one of the pigs (DC 10 Prof. Cook or survival)
Ragnar 1d6 ⇒ 5 You're manning the crow's nest today. DC 10 climb and DC 10 Perception. Watch out for sea gulls.
Ornotck 1d6 ⇒ 4 Ropework. Hauling, knotting, etc. DC 10 Prof. Sailor or Str and DC 10 Con to avoid fatigue.
Havok 1d6 ⇒ 3 Swabbing the decks. Scrubbing them with sandstone and then mopping. Fun. The good news is, you can't fail. The bad news? DC 10 Str or Con to avoid fatigue.
Lorelei 1d6 ⇒ 1 Manning the bilges. Vile and sweaty work cleaning out the lowest part of the ship. DC 12 Str to do the job and DC 10 Con to avoid fatigue.
Odiseo 1d6 ⇒ 6 Repairs: keeping up the maintenance of all the junk on the ship. DC 10 Dex or Prof. Sailor.
