Anyone not sick of pirates?

Starting a new Skull and Shackles game, and looking for anyone interested in joining the crew. This will be a game that is about character development and storytelling first.
Looking for roleplayers able to make a solid, descriptive post twice a week. A paragraph should be a bare minimum, and you can expect a similar contribution from me
Characters should have a backstory that gets them to the Formidably Maid tavern in Port Peril. This can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Keep in mind that storytellers are being sought, but that as a first level character, your story is just beginning. If you've already slain a great wyrm and have a standing date for tea with Asmodeus each Thursday, it will be hard to reconcile your story with your stats.

Speaking of which, characters should be first level, built on 20 pts with average starting gold for your class. All races, classes, feats & archetypes in the PRD will be allowed, excluding 3PP, though I will admit to a preference for the core races. Characters will be allowed two traits that may include the S&S campaign traits, but are not required to. I leave it to you to get yourselves to the tavern on time. Each character should also have a flaw (a trait equivalent penalty/negative) that should shed some light on their personality. I will also assign each character a third trait when the final party is chosen.

I'm trying my hand at GMing PBP for the first time, so I ask anyone who signs on with our crew to be tolerant.

Scarab Sages

Not sick of them at all. I would enjoy the chance to play through this AP. Character concept to follow later tonight.

Looking forward to it, Ozzy.

Grand Lodge

My submission for this game. Need to update gear

Nice, Felix.
Yes, you'll probably want him to have some stuff so I can take it away.

Who could possibly get tired of pirates? Dotting for interest and making a submission soon.

I think a half-elf bard will be what I submit. Now to get to work statting her up.

Lorelei, nobody in their right mind could get tired of pirates.
I'm looking forward to meeting her.

I was looking over your character, Felix, and noticed that both your traits give you a +1 bonus to Diplomacy. From the PRD

Many traits grant a new type of bonus: a “trait” bonus. Trait bonuses do not stack—they’re intended to give player characters a slight edge, not a secret backdoor way to focus all of a character’s traits on one type of bonus and thus gain an unseemly advantage.

Grand Lodge

Woops, forgot about that. Ill get that fixed

Exactly, pirates are always entertaining. That's why my favorite tabletop game to run is "7th Sea". Great swashbuckling fun to be had there.

Dotting for interest; I don't have a solid concept just yet.

I'll have somethin' later tonight.

DM Nerk wrote:

Right you ARRRRR! I'm sure I'll be havin' a corsair ready fer ye ere long.

@ Felix: a +9 diplomacy should be tolerable for a first level fighter.
@ Lorelei: I must investigate 7th Sea.
@ Zack & Black: looking forward to seeing the results.

In general:
I'll keep the recruitment open through the weekend, and then see what we've got. I will hopefully be out on the water and not posting much over the weekend.

a short wiki page]

Sadly out of print now, but most books can be bought from drive-thru rpg in pdf format and you can find used books on ebay.

Never can have too many pirates or swashbuckling action :)

Presenting Kiernan D'agostino, corsair and former gladiator.

Nice crunch, Kiernan.
And now that I pushed the little "Background" button, nice fluff, too.

Interested. Would like to try out a buccaneer (gunslinger archetype from Advanced Race Guide) if that's cool. Will get the details fleshed out asap.

Sovereign Court

Presenting Fen, halfling girl with a naive lust for the sea.

backstory:

Fen grew up listening to the tales her uncle told about the exciting life he had as a sailor aboard one of the Halfling merchant ships from Korvosa, and was fascinated by the exotic and adventurous life the sea had to offer. The only child of the owners of a small tavern, her life would be inevitably boring by comparison, so she often snuck away to a bluff that overlooked the sea where she would breathe deep the salty air and dream of sailing away to exciting new lands.

It was after one of these forays that she returned home to find disaster – the door was broken off its hinges and the tavern was completely wrecked. She frantically searched through the rubble only to find her parents lifeless bodies, fresh wounds betraying their violent death. Through tears, Fen fled her home and ran aimlessly until she found herself in a tavern where a kindly gentleman dried her tears and bought her a drink. After she calmed down, she walked down to the docks to gaze at the sea, hoping the tranquil sight would inspire her to know where to go now. A blow to the back of her head silenced all such thought.

Fen will be a witch - intention is to obtain her familiar on board the ship after we begin, as suggested in the module.

Cecic the ship's cabin boy, or in reality a halfling cleric of Besmara.

Cecic story so far:

As a young halfling in the Shakles, his father is a dred pirate, well that's what his mother told him, though she couldn't quite remember his name. She said that his father could beat all the 'uncles' that came to stay and bought her drinks, where she worked in the Inn, 'The Bald Parrot' When he was first old enough, he went with his 'uncles', who taught him a thing or two about being a sailor, not to mention some things he'd best not repeat for his mother. As the eldest of the brood of children, 7 in all, it was up to him to look after them.

It was several years ago that his mother, Ginra fell into the harbour coming home from a heavy nights drinking with one of his 'uncles'. At least that's what uncle Captain Cranchr told the authorities and the children. It was then the children were given to the temple of Besmara and cared for, well some of the time, the rest they were given to various sea captains to use as cabin boys and girls. It is strange, but Cleric Frodthak, saw in Cecic a gift, he said given by the Lord of all Pirates, and so taught him the faith of Besmara. He has developed that ever since, its been invaluable when he's been a cabin boy for a sick captain.

Tonight though, he drinks, he's been 3 months at sea and now its time to forget the rigors and hardships and enjoy what the land has to offer, in the nearest Inn.

Cecic in the docks:

The docks were quiet now, the pale yellow of the sun struggled to penetrate the morning sea mist that draped across the harbour. The sounds of seagulls squarking their morning chorus, as their white and black feathers swooped and dived in the still air above.
On the dull gray stone quay stands a child looking longingly out to sea, his unkempt brown hair tied behind his head attempting to create a small ponytail. The mist clings to his hair, fine droplets grow until they fall onto his worn brown leather waistcoat, which covers a dull yellow shirt. Black breeches hang down, each leg covered to half way up his brown hairy calves. The trousers are held up by a black leather belt with a large intricate silver buckle, the head of a female pirate smiling over the water.
He sways slightly as the sea laps almost silently against the quay, almost unsteady on his large tanned feet, which seem oddly out of proportion with the rest of the boy. Yet the boy holds in his hand a bottle, almost empty, the remains of the tea colored liquid settle and sway in the last inch of the glass container. The boy is surrounded by a smell, he has started the road to ruin young, the sweet smell of rum envelopes him, his clothes and escapes from the bottle.
As you get closer, he turns to you, his green eyes under bushy brown eyebrows, take their time to focus on you. A clean shaven face with a pug nose and smile, slowly words are formed and a slurred voice reaches your ears, "Morning, nice day to go to sea, hic? Best to make the most of dry land and a port while you can." The smiles turns silly and his eyes glaze. This is not the boy you thought you first saw, but a seasoned sailor, a halfling. You move away, not trusting to his ways, the quickness of his hands, the deftness of his touch, for are not all halflings prone to interest in another's wares. Looking back, he has turned once more and looks wistfully over the water, swaying in time with those gentle harbour waves.

Development notes:

He will take Childlike feat and probably Pass for Human which will bring him to be the 'cabin boy'. After that it will be feats to aid his clerical skills. He will probably take a couple of levels of rogue or bard, which will add a few more skills to aid any ability he might have to be spy like, I mean he's only a child!!!
He will take a couple of levels in a second class, in the hope of gaining more skills, either bard or rogue. I kind of lean towards bard, to give the option of the Mystic Theurge but rogue does provide a little trap finding and light fingers.
I guess a point in Profession(Cook) wouldn't go amiss either.

@ Fen: Good stuff. I understand wanting to gain the familiar in-play, but just as a reminder, you'll be spell-less until then. If you want to have a familiar that either stowed away or was captured along with you, that works. Otherwise, we'll play it out.
@ Deevor: Looks good.
@ Chainsaw: it's a good looking archetype. Just know that you're going to keep your powder dry.

Liberty's Edge

@DM Nerk: I'm fine not having those abilities for a bit - I think the discovering of those abilities would make for an interesting role-playing experience - up until now she's just been a plain, normal girl.

I guess one of my favorite things about D&D is taking an everyman character from level 1 and watching them change and grow into something great.

half orc ranger. ship pilot/sailor

backstory:

Having been born in the shackles, he has always been around water, and as soon as he could he would go out in boats, or sailing around the small community he lived in, when a pirate crew came to rest at his town, he took the first opportunity to hide away on there ship, hoping to sail the seas on a real ship. he got his chance, while the crew kept him, they treated him as a slave, he hated them for it, while he loved the sea breeze and all that he was learning, as the years went by he changed hands a number of times, (once while being made to scrub the hull clean of barnicals a shark took a chunk out of his leg before he was able to be brought back up to safety.) each time rising up the ranks till he was a back up pilot for the crew he was on, he proved his worth when in a storm the pilot was washed off board and he was made to take the helm, he saved the ship and the remaining crew with his skill, when they went into dock for repairs he was brought along to the Formidably Maid, and set up with one of the "ladys" that worked there for his reward, after a night of romance and much drinking he wakes up once more in a hole.

crunch on profile.

So , I'm thinking about some kind of oracle; I've narrowed it down to three different combinations of curse/mystery:

- Mystery: Flame / Curse: Blind
- Mystery: Bones / Curse: Haunted
- Mystery: Dark Tapestry / Curse: Tongues

Background-wise, I've got a different precipitating event for each version.

Basic crunch done and up behind this alias. Since bards get to use whips I'd really love to try a swinging from the rigging maneuver with it at some point. It would either look awesome or be a spectacular failure. I'll have some background up later tonight.

Giving my opinion on Zack's oracle while knowing it means nothing. :)

Blind seems quite dangerous on a ship and most of the other oracles I've seen take the Haunted flaw. I don't think I've run across another oracle with the dark tapestry mystery and curse of tongues, so that'd get my vote.

I think dark tapestry is the winner, too.

Check this out:

[Insert name here] was the son of a wealthy shipping factor in Ilizmagorti. His mother was from Rahadoum, and in keeping with tradition, raised him without any religion whatsoever. Unfortunately, this made him the ideal candidate for a bizarre cult to kidnap and use in some eldritch rite; they needed an "empty vessel" for their "many-sided god" to inhabit.

The boy was rescued before the ritual could be completed, but the whole experienced left him changed... for the worse. He would fall into weird reveries, start gibbering in Aklo, and covered the walls of his parents' home with geometric diagrams, drawn free-hand, but with startling precision. At first, his family believed that [Insert Name Here] would grow out of these strange behaviors as the memories of his ordeal faded, but as they only seemed to intensify as he got older.

Fearing that the experience with the cult had broken his mind, [Insert name here]'s parents arranged for him to be sent to sanitarium. But he had overheard these conversations, and at the prompting of the otherworldly voices that seemed to plague him, [INH] ran away and booked passage aboard the first ship out of Ilizmagorti.

[INH] disembarked at Port Peril, with no better ideas, and no advice from the voices in his head, entered the first bar he came to: The Formidably Maid.

That's a terrible name.
Otherwise, very nicely done. Though I was looking forward to seeing you manage the challenge of a blind pirate.

Swinging from the rigging with your whip is an acrobatic charge with a huge potential to eat deck. Highly encouraged, so long as I don't see you anywhere near a battered fedora.

Wondering if there is still any room in tgis game been wanting to jump in a s&s game thinking of a kyton-born tiefling sorc or magus with a duelist sort of concept.

At least the dog wasn't named Lorelei...

I'll wait for the Gunslinger to shoot you.

Actually, I think it's a pretty cool character, but I don't think I'd want to play in a party with an expert PC. On the other hand, as the GM, I don't have to.

Will wait to see what others think.

Recruitment open til monday, 7/23, when I get up. At which point I will try to pick what looks like the best group from a fun/storytelling POV. And if that means every single one of you is playing a wizard, so be it.

At this point, I'm thinking 5 or 6, leaving a little extra room for characters that are more roleplay-interesting than tactically optimized. If it seems like you're wading through everything without spilling your coffee, I'll just beef up the opposition.

It's a work in progress to be sure.

Gunslinger? Maybe I can modify him for this AP?

I present Havok Fingerburst, Goblin Pirate Extraordinare, Amateur Alchemist, and all around awesome guy! Just don't let him lick you!

Cruch and Backstory are in the alias

@ Havok, well, at least it won't take them long to learn where you got your name.
@ Belle, I actually meant the other gunslinger who was interested, but I'll say it again: you have to keep your powder dry.
@ Zack, a work in progress is a good thing. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Complete Characters So Far:
Havok Fingerburst, goblin alchemist (grenadier).
Ornotck Kalsor, 1/2 orc ranger.
Cecic, halfling cleric of Besmara.
Fen Tova, halfling witch.
Kiernan D'Agostin, human fighter (corsair)
Felix Tahrhal, 1/2 elf fighter (lore warden)

Also expressed interest, but not fully crunched and/or backstoried:
Lorelei
Zack
Belle
Blackacre
Chainsaw
Ozzy

If I missed anyone, let me know. I'm not by any means making any decisions yet, just trying to stay on top of the menu.

@DM Nerk - realised I had the older crunch, so its all be updated now, only difference is I took points into profession: sailor, profession: cook and profession: Barkeep. The backstory explains why I have those skills

Lorelei's basic backstory is up now behind her alias. Though more may be added later today after I run some errands.

Havok Fingerburst wrote:

I love it.

Though it's deeply disturbing that he's been serving his shipmates molotov cocktails as ... well ... cocktails, but that just makes me love it more.

molotov cocktails with a side of goblin mucus! I'm glad you liked it though

I will submit a mute Ulfen Barbarian (Sea Reaver) once I have a chance tonight.

Odiseo Haddad reporting for duty!

For his "flaw," I was thinking about something like:

Daydreamer: Odiseo is prone to flights of fancy, cloudwatching, and various other forms of woolgathering. As a result, he takes a -1 penalty to Perception checks.

Also, a note on his skills: I gave him "Profession (Mathematician)" to represent his weird talents with numbers and geometry.

@ Havok, *turns a bit green* I was trying to forget that part.
@ James, Sounds great, a fun and challenging character to play.
@ Lorelei, putting you on the list for done, and very nicely so.
@ Lorelei again, for gaming purposes, I'm calling your flaw a -1 to save against charms, figments and glamers, and to sense motive checks to know you're being lied to.

Also, thanks for reminding me everyone wants a flaw. I don't recall seeing any in the other characters I mentioned as "done," but then, I forgot that I had asked for them.
So, everyone should feel free to create a flaw. It'll buy you an extra trait (chosen by me to fit your character) and should be roughly trait equivalent.

@ Odiseo: Good name. Good character. Using your gift of madness on other PCs is probably a bad idea. Probably.

Would being disgusting count as a flaw? Or could I go with something like clumsy?

Sovereign Court

Fen is hopelessly naive, believing that life at sea is wonderful, and pirates more exciting than dangerous....not sure how that might work mechanically as a flaw. Ideas?

Fen Tova wrote:

I'd almost say it's the same as Lorelei being so trusting, but that's no fun.

hmmmmm....
Is a -1 to all saves to resist spells and spell-like abilities cast by humanoids on ships too heavy-handed? "A pirate wouldn't really try to set me on fire, would he?"

Yeah, I will go with terrible hygiene, it fits the character with his slightly posionous mucus
