Enemy

Tresca attempts the same toss as before, this time with much more accuracy. The blast impacts her target directly and the spash damage is enough to take out it's neighbor as well.

Grimaldus hacks down on the last remaining druid, returning him to the void. Logain relieves the yellow rat of it's head and Odo stabs the blinded and stunned rat nearby.

Remaining rats are still stunned in round 4, so no return attack.

Grim and Logain wade into the mess of dead men and rats to strike down the last two stunned rats.

By the time last rat falls silent the constabulary has secured the southern end of the prison and and you see them rounding up men to the south. Nearby, a handful of ragged and injured cultists are in manacles and seated against the wall.

Grimaldus searches the druids, but only manages to foul his hands with the rank scent of filthy human and rodent. They carry simple clubs, wooden shields and a simple silver holy symbol of Groetus, but nothing else of note.

Two features dominate Swift Prison’s interior: the Greedy Narses and the prison’s main keep. The Greedy Narses is a large wooden building on the southern border of Swift Prison through which all prisoners or visitors must pass to reach the keep. The many cells lining this building’s southern facade serve as “beggar’s boxes” that provide a chance for the Swift’s unskilled residents to earn some coin. Other than the decorated front, and the gilded statue in the square, this building is quite plain.

The keep is three stories tall and once contained several holding cells, but as you pass through the entryway you see that the cell’s iron bars have all been removed somehow with reddish orange flakes and powder everywhere they should be. The keep’s ceilings are all 9 feet tall and the entire structure is littered with broken furniture and shattered storage containers. Having seen the place neat and orderly and bustling with activity, the sight of it all a sundered, chaotic mess and deathly silent is something of a shock.

B1: Indoor Market
Many market stalls lie shattered across the paved floor.
Wood splinters and papers litter the room.

B2: Mess Hall
This 30-foot-by-35-foot room houses the prison’s mess hall.
It contains several enormous wooden tables, stained by
years of use and abuse. The room smells musty and rotten.

B3: Kitchen
This large kitchen holds culinary equipment needed to serve
a large number of prisoners. Several dead prison cooks lie
here, their bodies slashed and stabbed repeatedly.

B4: Beggar’s Boxes
These twin corridors hold many small rooms that look
out through rusted bars out onto the small square in
front of the prison. At the base of each set of exterior bars,
a box with a slot for coins sits on the ground. There are 12
small rooms in total. Each wooden box has been smashed
to bits and most of the coins are gone.

B5: Swift Chapel
This 50-foot-by-35 foot room contains the recognizable
trappings of a chapel. An altar dedicated to Abadar rests
upon a raised section near the northern wall.
The chapel holds the supposed bell of obedience.

Tresca pockets one of the holy symbols of Groteus from the druids, recalling that a holy symbol had been one of the many keys in their previous investigations of the cult. She never thought of herself as particularly favoured by Nethys in the first place, so she doubted holding on to another god's holy symbol would change much in that regard.

At the chapel, the Alchemist helps the others in their search, speaking in a hushed tone to the others as she does so. "In our previous dealings with the cult, we've encountered Mites. Small blue creatures, slaves that the Derro are fond of using as footsoldiers. We had success in turning them to our cause by offering their freedom, I would suggest we do the same here."

Grimaldus finds little to interest him in the indoor market, though he does notice that many of the loose papers look to be pages from a ledger of some sort before proceeding on to the chapel.

This 50-foot-by-35 foot room contains the recognizable trappings of a chapel. An altar dedicated to Abadar rests upon a raised section near the northern wall. The chapel holds the bell of obedience and as you lay eyes on it, you suspect that the finely crafted bell is the genuine artifact.

Logain, Tresca and Oronia notice an inscription on the chapel’s yoke located in the bell tower here that looks to be in Azlanti.

The inscription reads, “Through obedience, we find peace.”

Tresca frowns at the inscription on the bell. Turning to Oronia, she gestures at the inscription on the bell. "I don't suppose you read whatever language that is?"

While Oronia completes her study of the bell, Tresca takes a free moment to mix up a quick extract. As she shakes the phial, she gives Logain a bit of a sideways look. While Grim is out picking up pieces of paper with Odo and Tresca, they hear a bell chime once inside the cathedral. Drawing his greatsword, he rushes into the space looking for the threat. Logain rings the bell and despite the covering of ears, you all feel a calming sensation. It stills the chatter of your thoughts and you feel open and at ease. Only after several moments have passed do your concerns and worries over the effects of the bell return. (Sorry, you'll have to delay that indignant reaction, Grim. ^_~)

You complete your cataloging of the bell and move onward.

B6: Prison Yard
The prison yard ahead is littered with several dead bodies. Rusted, iron flakes dust the ground around a series of thick gates. Within the keep’s yard, four derro corpses surround an insectile quadruped. Countless barbed crossbow bolts penetrate the strange beast’s hide, and where its head should be, thick ichors moisten the ground around two separated feathered antennae. Dozens of mundane rats feed on the dead and scurry about the yard, they part like a living sea as you approach and flee for cover.

Knowledge(Dungeoneering) DC 13:
This deceased aberration is a Rust Monster. These lobster-like creatures would be frightening enough even without the alien feeding process that gives them their name. Rust monsters consume metal objects, preferring iron and ferrous alloys like steel but devouring even mithral, adamantine, and enchanted metals with equal ease. Any metal touched by the rust monster's delicate antennae or armored hide corrodes and falls to dust within seconds, making the beast a major threat to subterranean adventurers and those dwarven miners who must defend their forges and compete for ore.

Known for their voracious appetites, it looks as if the Derro brought this 'pet' with them to devour the bars and barriers, but once the rust monster ran out of food, it hungrily turned on its derro handlers.

Looking over the papers, Grim believes he has assembled much of a financial ledger for the Swift Prison. The dead derro wear simple leather armor and carry shortswords and their dreaded repeating crossbows and poisoned bolts, which seem to have proved key to bringing the rust monster down. I'm not sure of the answer to that question, Logain, but as there is no mention of it, I'm gonna go with 'no', you can't utilize the tentacle. Let me know if you are taking any looted equipment.

Satisfied there is nothing more to see here, Grim leads the group through the narrow passage ahead...

But as you approach the alcove, the ground rumbles and a massive figure bursts up from the ground before you. It seems created of the earth itself, vaguely humanoid in shape and featureless save for two glowing gemstone eyes. It rears up before you and slams down on Grimaldus before he can react. Fortunately, the blow is badly placed and misses the warrior.

Oronia recognizes the creature as an Earth Elemental, and rather a large one at that. A burrowing earth elemental can pass through stone, dirt, or almost any other sort of earth except metal as easily as a fish swims through water. These outsiders are notoriously difficult to damage, regardless of the method. (DR 5/—)

Tanselle steps back as Tresca commands, loads her cartridge and fires. The shot is well placed, but despite that seems to do nothing more to the monster than blast away some loose dust.

Grimaldus lays into the creature with a mighty blow, crumbling away a significant portion of the elemental. Logain and Odo fail to hit their mark as Tresca begins enlarging Grim.

The mountainous creature slams down on Grim again, this time making crushing contact. Grimaldus takes 14 damage. Sorry I oopsed the first attack, that is the proper attack bonus and damage now. =/

The blow that hits Grim is so hard that Odo almost feels it. He quickly transfers his scimitar to his shield-hand and reaches out to Grim.

"The Dawn brings new light," he says as Grim feels a warm glow and some of his wounds are healed.

Lay on Hands: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9

Odo otherwise stands his ground in an effort to keep the elemental's attention divided.

Tresca winces as she watches Grim get hit. Even with her shiny new armor, the half elf is convinced that the blow would have killed her. Tucking her wand back through her belt, she pulls her usual bomb materials out of her alchemist's kit.

Move Action: Stow wand away

Swiftly mixing the chemicals together, she takes a moment to aim, then throws at the elemental, hoping that it wouldn't be able to shake off an explosion.

I'm really really hoping this is one of those cases where the mob's big size gives it a terrible touch armor class...

The Earth Elemental proves somewhat harder to hit than the broad side of a barn for those swinging with swords, but Tresca's bomb still strikes it mark, blasting away a small portion of the rock and earth that composes the being.

Grimaldus grows to equal the monsters size and the Elemntal tries to slam the fighter again, but the blow rebounds off Grim's armor.

By my calculations, Grim's enlarged AC is 19. His armor allowed no dex bonus to begin with so he only gets the size penalty. He gains a +2 size bonus to Strength, and his greatsword now deals 3d6 base damage.

Frustrated over her inability to damage the elemental monster, Tanselle holsters her pistol and moves up to aid Logain in his strikes, drawing her scimitar. (Round 2) She thrusts and parries, mostly for show and draws the earthen arms down low, leaving the monster's head unshielded for Logain's attack. (Round 3)

Now on equal footing with the creature, Grimaldus puts his mighty weight behind his massive blade, crushing and paring away a great chunk of the thing's arm in a true clash of titans.

Tanselle's aid ensures the magus hits his mark as well, further chipping away at the earth elemental.

Still need round 3 actions from Oronia, Tresca and Odo before I know for sure if the elemental will be around to attack again.

Tresca can't help but laugh at her friend's reaction to the spell. "Any time, Grim. Any time!" she calls out. Surely things would be over soon with the weight of eight Grims behind that sword?

Tresca's hand strays to her bomb pouch, but with hesitation, she draws her crossbow instead. She didn't have so many bombs that she could afford to be wasting them. Bolts on the other hand... Running to the nearest Derro she could find, Tresca picks up one of the poisoned bolts and loads it into her crossbow.

"Oronia, how do these elementals fare against poisons?" she asks

Move: move to closest Derro while drawing crossbow
Move: load crossbow

Not sure how much movement I'm allowed to lump into a single action, or how difficult it will be to find a bolt. Cut me off if I did too much?

Oronia shakes her head in response to Tresca's querry. "Poison does not harm them, I'm afraid." Tresca also realizes the bolts are too small for her own crossbow. Derro are small creatures and they use a repeating crossbow, I don't think they would be compatible ammo anyway.

The elemental slams into the equally large Grimaldus and the grinding, groaning sound of stone on steel reverberates through the room. Grim takes 13 damage

Back to school rush is upon me, but the good news is I'll have more time to update come next week.
