Hi, Ash. Cool small world moment.

Odo cannot keep the shock out of his voice. "You did what?!? I thought Hemzel was a protector of the forest and its folk. There has to be some kind of mistake!"

Is there any way we can help him?

Rhanloi shakes his head in disbelief...this put a whole new wrinkle in their mission! Out loud, he says, "Do you know why they said he was going to bring others here to destroy you? Was it a lorestone? We can help take it away and perhaps allay their fears..."

Female Human Pathfinder Society GM Thistletop Combat Map

"Oh! You are upset... Please, I'm going to show myself, d-don't hurt me." You hear a slight swish as Gire dismisses her invisibility, and you see a diminutive fey flying above the hut. She is green-skinned and wields a needle-thin rapier. A pair of dragonfly wings holds her aloft.

"Lorestone? That smooth rock? Cyflymder took it with him after he killed the druid. Cyflymder is a great, bold fey. He’s promised to clear the Verduran Forest of the scum who stole our heritage. He says the druids only exist to trick us and help humanity steal our treasures. But… but I’m not so sure he’s right anymore. Oh! Poor Hemzel is still inside if you think you can help him, but I doubt it." She shakes her head sadly.

As you speak with Gire, you notice that the smoke is no longer confined to Hemzel’s chimney — the walls of the hut are starting to smolder.

Knowledge(Nature) DC 11:
Gire is an Atomie. In lands thick with fey, atomies often serve as border sentries or bodyguards to nymphs, dryads, or other more powerful fey creatures. While atomies prove only passable in their ability to defend such creatures, other fey accept their fealty out of respect and perhaps with a bit of mirth as well. Atomies enjoy their time as honor guards, but often grow bored and leave their posts in search of adventure.
These nimble creatures adore swordplay and practice with their blades endlessly. Atomies often travel their lands seeking adventure tinged with mischief. Sensitive to bullying and oppression, atomies revel in turning the tables on a cruel mayor or tormenting dishonorable mercenary bands. Atomies, enamored with tales of epic duels and the defeat of great evils, sometimes follow adventuring parties and eavesdrop on their nightly tales by the campfire. If a warrior in the group tends to boast of his swordplay, an atomie rarely resists the urge to humble him by sabotaging his equipment or invisibly reducing him and challenging him to a duel.

The heat is palpable inside the primitive, one-room hovel. Tinder from the fireplace is strewn about, sparking the fires that now climb the reed walls. The room itself is in shambles. An eviscerated human body sprawls across the floor, and a butchered wolf lies against the wall by the front door. Puddles of blood surround them. The man’s hands are tied to a rough wooden table, upon which sits an ornate—but empty—box and a blood-spattered manuscript.

The hungry fire is beginning to spread, seeking to consume everything in it's path. It will likely be out of control soon if the pathfinders cannot stop it.

Actions dedicated to fighting the fire can slow it. As a standard action, a PC with a blanket, a waterskin, or another appropriate tool can extinguish one five-foot square.

Lay on Hands: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) = 5 If Hemzel can be healed, he is healed for 5 hit points).

Ranloi saves the manuscript before it can burn as Selter sprays the fire engulfing the bed with his waterskin, Reiko attacks the flames nearest the door, and Darren beats at the flames near the fireplace, all three of them extinguishing a section while Odo enters and moves to heal Hemzel. Unfortunately, as he puts his hands to his body, it's clear that he is beyond your help. He has bled out from his wounds and feels cool to the touch.

No heal required, he is obviously dead.
Marking extinguished flames with a cloud symbol. Ranloi, you used your standard to retrieve the manuscript, so no flames put out by you yet. Selter, yes, liquid ice sounds like it would be effective in helping put out flames.

Just as Odo bends to touch Hemzel's body, you hear the thump of heavy boots running toward you. Odo and Ranloi feel the impact of a rough hand and a heavy shove that seems bent on pushing them into the flames. The halfling paladin is propelled 10 feet into the flames on the bed,(Odo takes 2 fire damage) but the wizard is more wily than anticipated and throws his weight in the opposite direction, holding his ground against the assault. Their attackers flash into view. At first glance they appear human, garbed like lumberjacks and wielding battleaxes. But something about their features is off. Dark eyes too large in pallid, grey faces and the buds of horns have sprouted upon their brows. *cough*Liberty's Edge Faction Mission*cough*

The strange men slash with their battleaxes at the pathfinders, but are unable to connect.

Combat Over!

With no more distractions, the fire can now be dealt with directly. In short order, the fire is put out and the place searched. The lorestone does indeed seem to be gone, but Frost has Hemzel’s journal, which is written in a sort of pidgin shorthand of Common and Druidic.
Need a linguistics check or other means to decipher the manuscript.

Hidden under the table along the far wall is a small cache of useful items: a potion of barkskin +2, a potion of bear’s endurance, and two scrolls of lesser restoration. You also find a tablet of rare blue stone, with intricate cuneiform writing underneath the ruined bed, undamaged by the fire. *cough*Scarab Sages Faction Mission*cough*

The fey-touched men wear only simple clothes and a breastplate. On each of their bodies you find a potion of cure light wounds and a masterwork battle axe. Near the door you discover the body of a deceased Atomie, who appears to have been crushed by the jaws of Hemzel's wolf. She carries weapons sized for her tiny stature as well as a bag of tricks (gray).

On Hemzel's body, you also find an amulet of natural armor +1 and a pouch with 240 gp.

Selter has no trouble deciphering the manuscript as he speaks both Druidic and Common. Hemzel's journal proves to be detailed notes regarding the lorestone and his recent issues and research.

You learn that the lorestone is keyed to druidic circles, and one lies several hours travel north from the hut on a lake island; a band of fey has recently been harassing Hemzel and threatening to destroy the lorestone; Hemzel assiduously avoided exposing the lorestone to sunlight; the sun’s rays striking the lorestone inside of a druidic circle disintegrates it!

Odo calls out to Gire, but no answer returns. You note you can no longer hear the buzz of her wings nearby either.

Please let me know who is taking what as you leave Hemzel's hut.

Hemzel's journal (this is the blood spattered manuscript, correct?)
Potion cure light wounds *2
potion barkskin +2
potion of bears endurance
amulet of natural armor +1
scroll lesser restoration *2
masterwork battle axe *2
tablet or rare blue stone
bag of tricks (grey)
.
I will carry the journel since I can read it to check anything that comes up.
I would recommend the bad of tricks for Reiko (seems ninja-ish)
Anyone that doesn't have an emergency cure potion should take on of these, I have 2.
Odo and I are the prime melee so I would suggest we split the potion of barkskin and potion of bears endurance. (If no one objects, I would choose the portion of bears endurance.) But if you guys would prefer to give them to the wizard and ninja to be less squishy, I have no objections.
Odo and I can use the scrolls, so we could each take one to use on who ever needs it.
Maybe the amulet of natural armor for Rhanloi or Darren.
Darren, you might take an axe in case you need a better melee weapon.
I can carry the tablet if no one else wants to do so.
Just suggestions. If you want a different split, just say.

Bag of tricks is for someone with handle animal as you need to command them. Nothing really strikes my fancy. I'm gonna try to avoid getting hit anyway ;).

Rhanloi has the lowest AC of the group. Not sure you actually need handle animal to use the bag - it just limits your commands to those from the handle animal list...Bluedove - what's your call on this?

It can follow any of the commands described in the Handle Animal skill.

I've always taken that to mean it knows the tricks, so handle animal is unnecessary. You would only need handle animal to push it to do something not covered by the tricks.

Rhanloi if you want something, sing out. That was just suggestions. I'm not particularly in love with any of those items.

Ranloi, if you think you can make better use of the potion of barkskin for this mission, you can take it. I'm OK with trusting to my armor. I'll tote around one of the scrolls of lesser restoration.

Odo sighs. Gire could have been a useful source of more information. But such was not to be. However, the summation of Hemzel's notes surprises the paladin.
"The lorestone can be destroyed by being exposed to sunlight in a druidic circle? That's odd. Does that mean it has some power particularly opposed by druidic magic? What had Hemzel gotten himself into?"

"Thanks for the healing, Selter! Let's get moving to that druid circle and find out what's really going on here..." Rhanloi says. He will offer to hold the magical bag and the amulet unless someone else wants them. He will also put the blue stone tablet into his backpack for travel.

I hunted around for clarification, but didn't find any. If someone has ranks in Handle Animal, they would be the better bet for the bag of tricks.

As you make your preparations to leave, you notice a band of gnomes approaching the hut from the south. They do not look happy as they climb the hill with an expeditious stride. One of them pipes up as they draw near. "You see, Boomroppel? I knew I smelled smoke... Hemzel! Where are you? HEMZEL!!"

Their leader, Boomroppel, surveys the scene with a face like stone. His wolverine snarls menacingly at his side. "Who are you people and what are you about here? You are trespassing and if you have harmed my friend Hemzel, prepare yourselves to face gnomish justice!" He draws his sword, but does not advance as he waits for you to explain yourselves.

As you might guess, these gnomes begin the encounter Hostile and you will need to rely on Diplomacy to talk them down.

Based on BlueDove's ruling, I'll take the bag of tricks if no one objects.
Loot List:
Hemzel's journal (this is the blood spattered manuscript, correct?) - Selter
Potion cure light wounds *2 - Darren
potion barkskin +2 - Reiko
potion of bears endurance - Rhanloi
amulet of natural armor +1 - Rhanloi
scroll lesser restoration *2 - Selter and Odo
masterwork battle axe *2 - Darren
tablet or rare blue stone - Rhanloi
bag of tricks (grey) - Selter

.
GM, question I forgot to ask. From the appearance of the bodies; what kind of weapon (or natural attack) appears to have killed Hemzel, his wolf, and the Atomie?

Selter says, Odo, I believe there are sssome folksss outssside that wisssh to have a conversssation with you. As he passes Odo on his way out the door he mutters, Pointsss to remember: our weaponsss do not have the blood of Hemzel, our gear hasss been burned putting out the fire, and we do not have the loressstone.
.
Selter walks out the door obviously dropping his spear shield and club to the left of the door. Then he turns to the right and sits on the ground next to Sithiss. I’m attempting to be as non-threatening as possible to not screw up your diplomacy. But if necessary, Sithiss and I are still very combat capable.

Odo extends his free hand as a gesture that he is not brandishing a weapon in anger and speaks out to the gnomes. "Stay your hand, friend gnome. I am Odo, servant of the Dawnflower. I and my companions are enemies of neither you nor Hemzel. In fact, we came here to meet with the druid to find he had been slain and his hut burning. We only just finished extinguishing the flames and dealing with the few raiders left behind by his attackers."

"I wish the situation were different, and if you are friends of Hemzel, you have our condolences on his untimely death. But we now have a puzzle before us that may require your aid to solve. So let us speak in friendship that Hemzel may sooner be put to rest and his killers brought to justice."

Carp, I really don't want to fight these gnomes.
GM, some (more) questions for you:
1) Do you allow assistance rolls for diplomacy in a situation like this? Some GM's do not, each person makes a separate diplomacy check.
2) If you allow a roll to assist diplomacy and the person attempting the assist fails by 5 or more will that worsen the attitude or is it only if the main person attempting fails by 5 or more? I've seen GM's rule this both ways also.
3) Will you allow me to give my folio reroll to Odo to reroll this diplomacy check? Again, some do and some don't.
4) Approximately how large of numbers in this 'band of gnomes in front of us?

.
Reiko, we are not trekking anywhere yet. We have some potentially hostile gnomes in front of us.
Since you lie better than you speak the truth, you might start thinking about a semi-falsehood you can tell to help win over the gnomes without setting off the paladin with your dishonest. ;-0

"Hemzel... slain?" Boomroppel steadies himself as he hears your grim news. "If you have not done this, who has? You look like Pathfinder thieves to me! Why should I believe anything you say?!"

The blood-stained manuscript is indeed Hemzel's journal. Hemzel has suffered slashing wounds consistent with the axes used by the fey-touched and piercing wounds consistent with tiny rapiers.
1) I do allow for aid rolls or rolling a new diplomacy check as you prefer. I will also assign a roleplaying bonus if I feel the dialog is especially effective.
2) A failure to aid is merely a failure to help the roll, it won't decrease their attitude. But if the final aided Diplomacy total fails by 5 or more, their attitude will shift for the worse if there is room for it too. But it doesn't get worse than Hostile, so nowhere for it to shift, really.
3)I don't think a reroll is transferable, but if you can find some precedence for that I would consider it.
4) There are 8 gnomes and a wolverine.
Bluff would open you up for a sense motive roll to oppose, but the good news is you have 3 rounds to work your powers of persuasion. So basically each person have 3 chances to roll for diplomacy or aid.

No precedence for transfer of re-roll, I just know that a few GM's do allow it. Odo, do you have a re-roll? Seems like a decent time to use it to avoid a fight with innocents.
.
Still sitting on the quietly on the ground being as inoffensive as is possible for a couple of large snakes, Selter calmly says, Not really no. Ssself doesss not look even remotely sssimilar to a thief. I look much more like a large warrior who worksss with nature much asss a asssume Hemzel did. Odo, perceiving that he and his compatriots are not doing a particularly good job of putting their best foot forward, tries to answer the gnome's questions as best he can.

"I fear we are not entirely certain who was involved in Hemzel's murder and why. A fey creature named Gire told us another fey called Cyflymder is responsible. Apparently he bore a grudge against Hemzel, and perhaps all druids, for stealing their heritage and wanted to rid the Verduran Forest of them. I am not certain I have all of the subtleties right. Gire was quite upset and did not stay once we tried to rescue Hemzel from the fire."
