If you exceed the DC to demoralize a target by at least 10, it is frightened for 1 round and shaken thereafter.* A Will save (DC = 10 + your number of ranks in Intimidate) negates the frightened condition, but the target is still shaken, even if it has the stalwart ability.
Brian must flee from source of fear and gets -2 in all rolls.
Brian WhiteAngel |
Where are you getting that?
From SRD: "Demoralize: You can use this skill to cause an opponent to become shaken for a number of rounds. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. If you are successful, the target is shaken for 1 round. This duration increases by 1 round for every 5 by which you beat the DC. You can only threaten an opponent in this way if they are within 30 feet and can clearly see and hear you. Using demoralize on the same creature only extends the duration; it does not create a stronger fear condition."

Jerimiah's Paranoia drawback suddenly decided to rear it's head! That is, if you wonder why his mood has shifted so.

Last suggestion I see from a PC is:
we wanna overthrow these Golden Hand people and replace them. Probably with some righteous deity like Propoket, who is totally just as real as any other deity. Even Banjo.
Failing that, we'll just wipe them out.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Kill everyone? This sounds like a brilliant plan. Lanx can only kill one of us in turn before his deity comes to kill him right back! The odds are quite obviously in our favor.

"musing, whispered words,"
They weren't heing shouted Michael, explicitly stated as whispered. I merely made it bigger foe the effect.

Alright...well...I don't know what I can do about this situation. I could suggest that the temple can offer resurrection, but I don't want to seem like I'm offering a handout from a deity. It is much better than the young man having a mystical high level scroll just sitting in his bag. I want to offer some kind of olive branch, after the death we shouldn't have had. I'm at a loss as to what to do with this situation.

Everyone knows how much of a jackass I can be. It looks like this is such an instance where it's sometimes nice to have a reputation for telling it like it is. =)
Two things:
1) Dave's a big boy. (I know his main Alias is Uret, but he'll always be Dave to me. =) He'll roll with it. Yep, this was about as unforeseen as you can get, but I'd put money down that Dave already has a kick-a$s character concept already rolling around in his fertile head, and he'll probably post with it sometime soon.
Mind you, no matter how bat-sh1t-crazy it is, you're gonna let him have it. If it's from some d20 4th party wacky stuff that he once heard about in a party, if he can forward you some documentation, you'll be well served to let him go with it.
Even if it's a Swashbuckler. =)
(Or a WarForged. They have some really nice rules for Adam Jensen-class constructs classes! =)
2) Yep, it was completely senseless for you to go FULL F#!~ING MAGUS NOVA on a 3rd level caster.
You as a DM are -obligated- to sit back and look at the dice rolls, and if the dice don't do what you say, you need to his that "Edit" button and do something else. You had a whole hour to modify your post and really, really should have. Yeah, 99% of the time this isn't even an option, but if some of what amounts to "fluff" somehow results in character death (or TPK) then, yeah, time to ret-con before the thing even happens.
Or, better yet, think about what the average would look like beforehand.
Or, um, just open a challenge. Had he just said "You wanna fight me to see how tough I am?" I'm sure Dimitri would've stepped up. He probably would've dropped to that attack and then we wouldn't be having this conversation. Or of course I would've, and same thing. If he one-shots a small fire elemental, then same thing.
Hence, when Dave comes back (and he will, although the world may be poorer some medicinal herbs and/or fermented beverages for it =) just think about the tactical as well as the strategic.
Brian WhiteAngel |
He didn't want the kid to have it--that a Deus Ex Machina.
If Lanx stepped in, that's less contrived.
He still won't accept it, but it's important to be tuned in to the various tools of DMing.

Honest question: Are there ever any quests to have?
No, seriously. It seems like we just wander around, and are told stories that say "There's nothing to do here, but if you go over THERE, then that place is REALLY interesting."
And then we go somewhere else were we get neither XP nor loot, and catch another rumor about another place that might exist, but doesn't actually need us.
Basically, I feel that my character would be more useful to this world just getting a job. Right now I feel like a bum.
There's this thing called "Reputation" but fock me if I know how to get any? Do you even have any "Sources" of "Reputation" written down, or is that a thing that you said that the PC DESPERATELY need, but never did get around to actually putting in?
If this were a playtest of one of my games (I'm a dev for KOS games) I'd say that this was a good session, but we need to put more "weight" into the early game and we need need NEED a definite "spine" or "path" forward.
Open world is nice, but do you know how many quests there are in Skyrim? A lot. That's why you ALWAYS feel like you have something to do. On your way to do a quest, you find three more in the path there. Along with three mentions of forgotten tomes with phat l00ts.
Look, -I'm- willing to stick with you, because this character is FANTASTIC. You have the balls to put up with a summoner, so that's something. And I take for granted that you've got 5 notebooks full of places and NPCs.
But I need a quest.
Ever actually play in a literal sandbox? Of course, everyone has. But if you had just a sandbox and nothing else, it wouldn't last very long. But throw in a hundred toys and some water and some buckets and suddenly it's something you come back to a lot. Because you can build something. And knock something else down. And do things and see effects.
Hence.
So, the next post should be either a start-over, or someone saying "Help us adventurer, we need you to (kill/save/rescue) this (dragon/troll/big-buxomed maiden) and liberate it's (artifact/treasure/virginity)".
Thoughts?
Jerimiah Spilane |
Ah yes, the grand quest to Rescue the Troll and liberate it's virginity, truly the most epic and bold of tales. You make quit a few point Brian, but I think I'll be honest right out here. I've enjoyed parts of this campaign, but recently things have just grown... not so great, personally. That all came to a head when Michael killed Jerimiah with whom I suspect, he intended for me to take on as a consort... in a single absurdly strong blow.
I'm going to take this opportunity to draw my hat from the lot entirely, I'm sorry to say. Some of it's been fun, but I don't think I'd like to come back even if it did start all over from the beginning. Apologies to you Atlas, since it's very clear you really want this to work again.
Toby Jaffe |
Yeah, I think it would be difficult at this point to continue this game with the current players, even if they were willing, which I know several are not. I hope the GM can reboot at some point later on with a new group of players and maybe take some lessons learned from this run. It's obvious he's got a really strong concept of his world and it could make for a really interesting game.
Michael Johnson DM85 |
Than it is settled...the one time I rolled really well was the worst time to roll really well...i ruined the campaign for everyone. I'll be rebooting at some point, I'll learn lessons from this twice failed campaign. Sure I'll sulk for a time feeling sorry for myself and repeatedly calling myself a failure for killing a party member in a circumstance that should have just not happened...but I am a big boy, I'll get over myself and just focus on sharing my idea with the world once again...hoping that I don't fail once again to make an effective game. If you all would be so kind as to inform me of things that should change/stay the same in this campaign, I would be most grateful. First item on the list...don't kill an unlettered alchemists with a young man that happens to be magus with two amazing battle abilities that apparently do lots of damage...ever. Ya I'm gonna take a bit tooto get over my massive failure. I had no idea what to do that point, I was quite lost once it happened I couldn't figure out how to fix it or anything. So...ya... not doing that ever again...never again. Well I've done enough rambling I think. I'll just go into a corner and think what I did to make this campaign fail so badly and so often.

The only things I can recommend of the top of my head are:
1. Find a way to make your NPCs shine that is more PC focused. You did a great job of setting the PCs up as central to the plot, but players generally want to start kicking some butt from the beginning. The "you need to gain more power through experience" bit can complicate matters if you're constantly reminding PCs they don't yet have what it takes.
2. Maybe set up a specific quest to get the ball rolling, rather than starting off completely sandbox. while on the first, assigned quest, the PCs get threads leading to other adventures, and can follow them as they wish. Not sure if you ever played the Kingmaker AP, but it did a decent job of balancing sandbox with quest-based play.
A final note: In general, you've got two really good things going for you: your RP of your NPCs is great; I get the feeling they're all different personalities, and you definitely know them well. And also, the level of detail in your world is really solid, with lots of potential. I'd keep trying, definitely.

I agree with Rando's suggestions and I wish to add: please learn when to go all-out on the PCs and when not too. For example: in the fight with the captain, the constant parrying of every single attack discouraged me and made me feel like my character was ineffective. Allowing one or two more hits in would have gone a long way into making it feel like a tough battle, but a fun one due to being pitted against someone of equal or more skill.
I think that you and this campaign both have potential. And I wish you the best of luck in your next restart, please don't be too discouraged by what has happened here. You a good set of tools, a few just need some polishing is all.
