You return to the gates just before they close for the night...
Guard at the gate:
"What brings you to Korvosa so late?"btw, the only reason you think there might be a plague, is Mai's comment, which is obviously player knowledge....
Real world standard knowledge of the time:
The color black symbolised death. Black flags were traditionally flown on Plague ships as a warning to other ships.

About an hour later, Vencarlo arrives with Marra in tow.
"Thank you my friends, I can take it from here. Something strange occured, a ship wouldn't answer hails, Marra says that the ship had black sails, but the catapults broke her spine and she went down in two halves."
debolded, and bolded the flag
Sgt. Drakus |
Sgt. Drakus replies, boredom in his voice.
"Back from an escort job. And no I can't tell you details. Confidential as usual. Hey, let us in before the taverns close will ya?"
Gregor Ward |
Gregor follows stoically. He is reprimanded for trying to make haste, but as soon as we are instructed by Vencarlo to make haste, everyone jumps as if it wasn't what he himself was pushing for from the start.
Mai Asta Isabella |
If one lives in a town with a port or harbor, the knowledge of certain flags would be common to know and black was universal for death at the time.
Pirates changed from red to black and kept their icons, on top of the black background to signify they were pirates and not the plague.
She moves along with the rest of the group.

Gregor Ward |
Gregor snaps to attention, but does not salute, as he is out of uniform. "Sir, it is against the bylaws to perform non-official duty, in the official uniform. We would not dare to go against the rules just to try and create a presence that our uniforms evoke in the populace. Thus, since our duty was not Korvosan Guard in nature, we accomplished it without wearing them, Sir." Gregor explains, in his own way, that they are not in uniform, because they were not on duty. He ensures, all the same, that he does not lie to the Captain either.
DM X |
The Captain looks at Drakus, and Gregor, then to the priest of Cayden...then to the two ladies, he gets a smirk on his face...
"Oh, I understand, a drunken night of revelry with the two ladies...blessed by Cayden himself...Alright, you carry on then, oh and don't worry about the alarm earlier, seems a ship slipped its moors or some such and and the watchmen sank it before she could cause much damage...I bet some Merchant Lord is gonna be bent outta shape to hear one of his prized vessels was scuttled."
Nik'o |
Nik'o blushes first at the guard's comment, then laughs, playing the part he's chosen for her: "That's what you get from not heeding the Call. Speaking of which, I better heed myself!!!"
She'll give him a wink as she passes him. Further along, she'll relax. Then what?
She turns to the others: "All right, I'm lost! Did the girl we escorted kill the king or not? And what of Blackjack? When are we questioning him? And the Queen, are you seriously thinking she could have any part in this? Why would she? And her guard boss is good or bad or both? Help me here!"
Sgt. Drakus |
Sgt. Drakus opens his mouth to correct the Captain, than just shrugs his shoulders.
"Yes sir. Good to hear the watchmen are on the ball."
============================
Later, he answers Nik'o's question.
"Naw, she didn't do it. I don't know about Blackjack; some of the folks think he's a hero, some think hes a crook. It's fer folk smarter than us to question him. The queen... I don't know. There's something ... wrong with her. Sending that girl to die fer something she didn't do is just plain not right."
He pulls his helmet off and rubs his temples. He puts it back on again.
"I cheered along with everyone else when they got married, you know? Hopeful it was. I really hope we're wrong about her, and someone down the chain is pulling political strings, but... I don't know."
Gregor Ward |
Gregor nods with Drakus' statements, mostly agreeing, mumbling lightly on the mention of BlackJack, "Man, would I enjoy being there during the questioning of that fellow."
About the queen he adds, "Something has gone sour. When someone in power sends an innocent to death, to try and appease the peoples, it sparks more of a political agenda, above ruling fair an just. It could just be that, with King Eodred's untimely demise, may Pharasma keep him safe, that she is rudderless in a world of nobles, and is just receiving improper advice from one that has too much to say." Gregor submits, his want for a reason for all things helping him see possible reasons behind recent actions. His mood seems calmer and more comfortable after the reassuring words about the alarm bells that he received from the Captain.
Donagar |
"Yah would think tha guards would notice tha ship breakin loose an driftin out, not notice it comin back in. Mah faith is not in tha guard, tis in strong drink!"
==========
"Politics an intrigues err not mah strong suit, show me a monster tah bash about tha head an ears, iffen he has a head or ears tah bash."
Mai Asta Isabella |
"Donagar, makes a point. How could someone not see a ship drifting in or out of Port.
That and ships of the size I believe it to be are very costly to make.
I think the statement of it slipping it's moors and drifting is a lie."
Gregor Ward |
Gregor scowls at Pai, which he seems to do often, "I hope that you are implying that someone had given Captain Harkon incorrect information? You have no good reason to believe that he would feed two Sergeants of the Korvosan Guard false information, especially on the nature of alarm bells, do you?"
Mai Asta Isabella |
"Someone most likely did give him false information, as it would be those who are higher up then him to give the false information to those below them.
That and he could not leave his post to check it himself."
DM X |
if you got that one then....
The fog is extremely thick now, visibility is down to around 10', the temperature is hovering around 40 degrees, if you're not wearing winter clothes, the cold is starting to get to you.

Gregor looks disturbed but decides to explain, "Well, there is some reason behind the suspicion. A ship the size of the one sunk could not have slipped its moorings and been sunk where it seems to have been. The Captain is not at fault here, though, whatever he told us seems to be the exact story he had been told."

she has a smile (slightly playful I add) as she speaks
"So our thoughts are the same on this."Gregor Ward |
Gregor gives Pai an uncomfortable glance as she mentiones their like-mindedness, but he soon nods in agreement with the other guardsman. "Sgt. Drakus is right. We should first return and report our mission's success. I do not think a sunken ship will be going anywhere fast enoguh that we would not have time to return to the Citadel, drees more appropriately for the weather, and let the Field Marshal know that we think something may be amiss. Given the past accomplishments of the group, she may be relieved to have us investigate." Turning to Nik'o, he responds to her question. "Wish that I did, Milady, as I would offer it for you. Alas, most of my bedding and warm clothing is at my room at the Citadel." He gives Pai a worried glance at this last, hoping she doesn't have some ill-favored comment for his choice of words.
DM X |
As the party gathers and heads towards Vencarlo's Academy, the moon is visible as a pallid light shining through the upper reaches of the fog, the majority hanging close to the ground, typical in Korvosa this time of year. A Warm Mug of Spiced Ale would definitely hit the spot in your chilled bones...
So off to investigate or to report to Vencarlo? Just a note, this is the bone chilling cold that can easily cause hypothermia, and you could catch your death of cold being out in this weather.
Gregor Ward |
Gregor rebutts, "Milady, a ship being sunk in the harbor to the sound of alarm bells and firing weaponry will undoubtedly be spoken of for many weeks. I do not fear that there will be a dearth of conversation considering its circumstances if we delay but a few hours to report the accomplishment of our mission and dress accordingly for the rapidly chilling weather." He pauses to add, "I admit I was in a rush before, but that was when the alarm was fresh, and we had no idea what the emergency was. Now that we are in the know, there is no outward signs of a need to hare off unpreparedly."
We saw both Marra and Vencarlo at the safe house, so wouldn't we be more inclined to return to Citadel Volshyenek and report to Field Marshal Kroft as the one who gave us the mission? Either way I vote for returning to whoever we should report to, getting some warmer clothes, and then investigating the incident. I just figure that if there is some more information to be had, the Field Marshal would have gotten the brunt of it and may be able to tell us more.
