World's Most Interesting Out of Anarchy (001) [PFS Standard 6-22] (Inactive)

Game Master Great Green God

Game Day VII session 2 begins Saturday, October 6th. The pre-game show starts now.:
Several years ago, rebellion in the seaside town of Pezzack resulted in a Chelish blockade to slowly starve the rioters into submission. Since then few have entered or left, trapping the increasingly desperate citizens with little with which to repair their broken homes and eke out a living. When the Society learns that an important informant still lives in the ruined town, the PCs must smuggle themselves into Pezzack, navigate the devastated urban landscape, and extract their contact—all without igniting a new rebellion and inviting Cheliax’s unfettered wrath.

Content in “Out of Anarchy” contributes to the ongoing story-line of the Dark Archive and Liberty’s Edge factions.

A visitor's guide to Pezzack The combined list of places that the party knows something about.

Prof. Poppo wrote:

Well, if you think you're up to it, the thieves’ guild operates out of here, on Gold Street. Lots of information if you can buy it. You didn’t bring money with you, did you? Nobody takes money here. Maybe the Loyalists, but still, nobody worth spending it on.”

"Auntie's a big big tavern in Docktown, and a good place for gossip. You can try asking about Jax Telandil around there—he’s the Docktown Jax—but mind who you talk to if you don’t want to spread rumors.”

Auntie's is Docktown's floating tavern, and rooming house. It is arguably the most popular bar in town. The ship it is on sports suites on the top decks, a brothel just below, and an ever-full flop house on the deck below that. Auntie's is a great place to get gossip though rumor has it that not all of it is true.

Pezzack’s school of magic, the Academy of Applied Magic has always been geared toward producing artisans and thinkers skilled at crafting magic items, rather than adventurers. To that end, the curriculum centers on utilitarian spells that have a use in construction or infrastructure instead of in battle. The program focuses heavily on brewing potions and scribing scrolls.

The current headmistress is the elf wizard Sanda Malferixian.

The Throne Defiant is a stately brick and wood manor and one of the few spared from the Second Ashes’ fires. Now it is an inn and the only one that ever has room. Painted red with black trim, it proudly flies the current flag of diabolical Cheliax—though the flag is riddled with holes, tears, and burns as if it has survived numerous attempts to destroy it. The place is considered the only safe haven for the town’s Loyalists. It is the defacto home of Valia Wain, a human cleric of Iomedae whose chapel was burned to the ground during the fires five years ago.

Madge's Noodles Madge is apparently a "daft old bat" who with the help of a goblin drags a small noodle cart around docks. She serves the best noodles anyone apparently has ever had or so they say. She is also a bit of know-it-all and folks suspect (nobody knows) her of being an information broker and point of discreet contact, who will give you the info you need if you order just the right way.

Whaler's Point The spit of land that encloses Fat Harbor to the north is the same sort of terrain as that which surrounds the town—rocky spires and broken stone rises, useless for construction. Hundreds of years ago, whalers set up operations on the only practical piece of land on the spit, at the point right off the Pinch. Pezzack’s whaling industry is the only one Admiral Vedra Sawndannac, the blockade commander, has allowed to operate during the siege, and she extracts quite a percentage of their profits for the privilege. The whalers, not really having a choice, go along with it. Day and night, blubber boils in the whalers’ try pots, choking the sky with pillars of acrid smoke. The stench is unbearable.

The Alchgarden is what the tower of gnome alchemist Bonnifer Zoot has come to be known as. The park next to the tower sports a crazy assortment of strange (seemingly magically altered, sometimes dangerous) plant-life. Bonnifer herself lost her husband to the strix and seems to have no time for anything besides her work these days. She always seems short of reagents for her potions.

Does the spot mentioned in Madges coded notes correspond to the spot where the drunk guy was seeing the mermaid ghosts?

And still would like to case out the warehouse at some point... though tomorrow might be better.

Well the drunk mentioned the 'warehouse district' which is pretty much the entire waterfront. There are a few 'places' mentioned in the secret message, one of them is the Manukirt Trading Co. Warehouse (in the warehouse district), if that's the place you mean then maybe? You would have to find the drunk again to be sure.

No, the Whaler's Point comment.

The trading company is where the performance will be tomorrow, we already knew that. =)

Yes, I knew that you knew, but I thought you were asking about the merman. While there are warehouses at Whaler's Point, it is not according to Poppo at least, part of the warehouse district, it being cut off from the rest of the town by the high rocky shoreline to the north of town proper that it sits at the tip of, and therefore not likely the location mentioned by the drunk.

Reggie is sure to give Auntie a wink and pantomime's wielding a whip and nods his head toward Boratio before riding out of the her bar. Despite the lateness of the hour, it is a peaceful trip back to Professor Poppo's.

He is all too happy to tumble into bed, having been buried under fish, taken 3 treks through a sewer, been to an intelligentsia salon and a rowdy bar since the last time he slept.

Rowdy curls up under the cot he chooses, just as tired.

"For the sake of leaving no (philosopher's) stone unturned, should we check out the Alchgarden? I'm not sure if there will be anything there useful to us, but maybe one of the Jax personas visted there. It seems like Whaler's Point would be the only other place we haven't been to investigate. Although, if any of you are planning on investigating the Merspectre, I'd like to tag along. That may be a night time only thing, though. "Daylight ghosts are the worst. Or pirates trying to keep nosy kids away from their treasure." Aquavius laughs. "Let's go to the Alchgarden, see what's up there." Aquavius dons her stupid hat and travels to town.

Going with closest first: Alchgarden

Orange crab grass with real pincers, psychedelic mutant insects, a row of two-story-tall singing daisies with human faces, and a makeshift barrier of broken furniture around a huge pitcher plant dotted with signs saying helpful things like "Warning: Giant Humanoid-Eating Plant Ahead!" and "Don't Say We Didn't Warn You!" greet the party at the nearby alchemist's tower now known as the Alchgarden.

"Well? Whatdoyouwant? Ihaven'tgotallday." says the widowed gnome, Mrs. Zoot, the tower's owner and lead alchemist, in a rapid staccato of syllables. She has her thickly-gloved hands firmly planted on her hips as she looks up at Aquavaius (and much of the rest of the party). Her apron (and much of the rest of her) is mess of colorful stains.

"Oh, is there a shortage? Is it recent or the standard- what's with the giant flower?"

Bonnifer looks up at Aquavius as if she were a new sort of insect.

"You know." she says at a more understandable speed. "My work does not allow me to get out much but even I noticed the the Second Ashes, five years ago. NowifyouwillexcusemeI'mgoingbacktodoingsomethingproductive."

The strange giant plants continue to sing their strangely uplifting song.

Pasted amid the signs around the park warning people off are a few pasted fliers announcing the performance to be held tomorrow.

Feel free to continue to poke around, but Bonnifer herself seems to have no time for talking. The Alchgarden sells most common potions, oils, and alchemical items--when they have the reagents to make them. Like everywhere else you can't buy them with money.

Whaler's Point

A little later some of the group take a rowboat out to Whaler's Point. The place is pretty terrible. There is a constant greasy smell in the air that mixes with the stink of dead and dying fish. Grim-faced fishermen clomp about in raincoats and thick rubber boots, going about their business with fatalistic resolve. Few of them speak much more than to grunt meaningfully and nod to one another.

Every other shack and warehouse here has a familiar public notice plastered to its worn gray walls.

At the end of the spit of land stands a stone spire with a gallows attached to it that hangs out over the narrow entrance to the bay. There is a corpse hanging from it now. Whatever it was wearing has long since rotted to rags though there are hints--gold braid, and shreds of silk--that hint that the wearer was someone of some importance once upon a time. The strange thing is that even while the clothes look as though they have been hanging outside since the Second Ashes five years ago the man looks as though he was hung only this morning. Sea birds roost on the gallows pecking idly at the dead man's face, fingers and toes.

I'll move us to Wealday unless someone has something specific they want to do before then (like faction missions and such).

Aiden is trying to find Phelerosa through spreading rumors. He's hoping someone might be more willing to identfy her or it could even drive her to him for spreading rumors about her family.

Any reason we don't try to go by the Manukirt Trading Co. Warehouse now to see what we can find there before the performance? That or Gold street seem the most promising otherwise.

Reggie takes one look at the clothing of the man hanging from the gibbet and makes an immediate decision about him.

"He probably deserved it," the halfling mutters, savagely.

"But if you want to take a closer look and have a plan, I'm game," he tells Boratio.

He's somewhat distracted by trying to keep Rowdy from scarfing down some of the scraps...or not scraps. The wolf isn't picky, after all and the stink of offal to humans and haflings is often a call to gourmet dining to a canine.

I'm good with casing the warehouse before the show and wouldn't mind helping with the merfolk investigation. Although it might be a red (half man half) herring.

Are you asking that question of anyone in particular?

Boratio Fishblower wrote:

It's a noose not a cage, but yes.

The top of the gallows is built on a pivot so the body can be swung out over the water and back over land. there's a corroded brass placard attached to the stone base that reads: "TRAITOR'S HOOK".

So the remainder of today's schedule, after Whaler's Point, looks like this then: Manukirt Trading Co. Warehouse, Gold Street, Auntie's, correct?

Asking the rest of the party, assuming we're all there. If there's no magic involved, is there a skill that would help deciphering what's going on here? perhaps a skill that involves putting rags on to try to impersonate someone? :) i.e. have they stuffed a fresh corpse into an old corpse's clothes to try to hide a recent body in plain view?

Technically it would be a perception check to see through a disguise. One possibility might be that the dead man might have had to live in his clothes under some harsh conditions for sever years and never clean them before being hung, maybe.

The gallows is done up with pulleys so unless you are one of those Str 7 wizards you should be fine (mechanically speaking) lowering the corpse. And on that note any chance I could get you to add a link on your disguise to Son just so that I could check easily? ;)

Reggie fumes the entire trip across the harbor. He casts a few, angry glances back at the body dangling from the tower behind them.

He's still brooding as they loiter outside the warehouse and he sits atop Rowdy with arms crossed, looking up and down the street, watching for trouble.

"This place should burn again," he comments to no one in particular.

"Hey Reggie - sorry about earlier. There's no good way to deal with the Asmodeans, and I didn't want him to lash out against you. Still, it pained me to say the false words, and I want you to know I don't believe any of them. This was just a way to use his bias against him. We should come at dawn and free that guy after the ex high priest raises him from the dead. That, or at least ensure the man gets his eternal rest by stealing the corpse and giving him a proper burial. In other words: break him out of his eternal jail."

Reggie nods. "Sometimes freedom requires sacrifices and sometimes they are sacrifices of pride. It was the right thing to do. As will be saving that poor, tortured soul," he answers. He seems to perk up at the idea of rescuing the man, even if the man is dead.

He reaches out to shake Boratio's hand to show there are no hard feelings before turning his attention back to the task at hand. He's clearly in a better mood, Boratio's apology having soothed his frustration, even though the man was not who he was frustrated with.

He doesn't believe in 'game balance'. Gandalf always lets him pass. As a feat, he has Exotic Weapon Proficiency (beard). The city guard often question him, just because they find him so interesting. His dice bag is woven from tarrasque leather. His TPKs end game lines. His blood cures moderate wounds. He once punched a flumph. Yes, you heard me. He belongs to a prestige class whose sole requirement for entry is just being him. ♬ He is indeed, the most interesting GM in the world. ♬

Manukirt Trading Co. Warehouse

"Ah, there's nothing better than a little B&E, Well, maybe some booze." Aquavius looks for a way in.

There are a few big barn-sized doors, all the windows are at second-floor height.

Aquavius notes the presence of Madge's Noodle Cart to the east her goblin winks back at her in an exaggerated fashion only possible by those with goblinoid faces. Madge looking the other way sings hoarsely about the quality of her noodles.

She also notes some motion from one of the high windows directly ahead.

Aiden rolls his eyes at the halfling. He knew how dangerous it was to come here and he came anyway. Can't blame the Chelaxians for how they are.

He approaches the warehouse and looks to the others. He checks the door quickly for anything odd before he tries to open it.

Aiden doesn't notice anything suspicious. Upon trying to open the door he finds barred from the inside.

575 is going to go have some noodles!
Watch the warehouse goings on whilst filling his belly.

The goblin carter growls at 575 as the latter approaches. Madge puts a hand on his head and calms the snarling little beast.

"Don't mind Snapjack. He's just never seen a Xulgath before. He's very protective of Old Madge he is. Travelled with me all the way from Sandpoint he has."

The goblin pulls a live toad out of his apron and begins petting it.

"Have some o' Madge's oodlie doodlie noodles to help acclimate yourself to the surface world." Madge removes the cover of the cart's cauldron releasing a cloud of steam and revealing a slimy grayish mass of fish-scented noodles.

Apparently the customer has to supply their own bowl, and utensils, because the only utensil Madge has is her dented ladle.

Have some noodles for 5gp worth of trade goods? And do you have something she can ladle them into? If you do...:
They are DELICIOUS!! And very filling.

Aiden draws one of his curved knives and tries to slide it between the door and door frame, hoping to catch any bar or lever that might be able to be flipped off. "We might need to find a back entrance."
