This is the recruitment thread for a gestalt arena, set in the famous World Serpent Inn.

I chose this locale to allow PCs from pretty much anywhere to be made, and have a cool spot to hang out and RP in between matches.

Yes, there will be some RP, but it can be as much or as little as you'd like. I'll have some NPCs to interact with, as well as your fellow PCs.

::CHARACTER CREATION::

Level 4, gestalt.

Stats: 25 Point Buy.

Races: Any, including 25pt buy custom races via the ARG, subject to my approval.

Sources: All Paizo, plus Psionics. I helped design and playtest the Unleashed and Advanced book, so I trust DSP.

Traits: 4, though the normal limits apply. Let's get a lil crazy here, hmm?

Starting wealth: 8,000gp. Spend as you desire. If you have just a magic sword, you might regret that choice, but it is yours. Of course, you could also be just that badass with a sword, and not need anything else.

Hit Points: Max per level, your gonna likely need it.

Houserules: Everybody gets one(1) bonus skill point per level, this means Humans(and custom races with that trait) get 2. Everybody also gets one bonus Combat feat.

This is to help allow access to weapons, armor, etc that you might not normally have. You are gladiators after all, so you shouldn't be as restricted as normal.

Format:

Fights will be two vs two, sometimes one v one, and occasionally monster(s) vs PCs.

If I get too many submissions, I will need Co-GMs to help run the fights. Which will basically amount to being referees, and making sure no cheating takes place, and to help resolve any disputes.

I will not limit the number of players, but obviously the more we get, the more Co-Gms will be required.

I am trying to come up with some sort of reward system, ala World of Warcraft's Honor Points for combatants, but still working on it.

Also, leveling will happen, though I will need to figure out just how. Too, better gear can be acquired, though that shall come in time as well.

Suggestions welcome.

**WARNING**

If you make an OP combatant, as is in somebody more or less impossible to defeat, and able to win in the first round, without your opponents or teammate getting a turn, I will feed it and you to my pet Daemon.

25 point buy stats?

Lets rock mg

Okay guys, let's do this...

Can I use

Lycan:
Lycans are natural shapeshifters and the precursors to lycanthropes who they hate with a passion. The disease lycanthropy was created, though legend has forgotten by who, in an attempt to create more lycans, but it went awry and the resulting persecution from people who didn’t understand the difference between the race of lycans and the disease lycanthropy drove the lycans even further away from civilization. Lycans come in many different forms. Wolves, hyena, snakes, dire frog, dire rat, gorilla, tiger, coyote just to name a few. Lycan society is organized into packs, each pack being its own tribal society. There are many traditions in lycan society, but only one law: the strongest makes the rules. Might does indeed make right in lycan society. The packs rarely cooperate with each other and always compete to prove themselves the strongest.
Type: Monstrous Humanoid (3RP)
Size: Medium (0RP)
Base Speed: Normal (0RP)
Ability Score Modifiers: Specialized (1RP)
+2 Con, +2 Str, -2 Cha
Language: Standard (0RP)
no racial language, can learn Sylvan, Elven, Undercommon, Giant, Goblin, Dwarven, or Orcish
Racial Traits:
Change Shape, Lesser (3RP)
I picked this one because they have one animal shape and one humanoid shape and their 'hybrid' shape is more due to the fact that they can effectively stop the transformation at any point in between. So they can look like a humanoid animal or a human with animal features like ears and a tail if they so desire.
Moon-Touched DR (3RP) DR 5/silver
Scent (4RP)
Healthy (2RP) +4 on Fort saves vs poison and disease
Bond to the Land (2RP) +2 dodge to AC in specific terrain
Silent Hunter (2RP) reduce penalty for using Stealth
Terrain Stride (1RP) can move without penalty in specific terrain
Camouflage (1RP) +4 on Stealth within favored terrain

Can use 3 RP to choose among the following based on what is most appropriate for the lycan’s animal form:
Bite (1 RP) Gain a bite attack, does 1d3 damage
Slapping tail (3RP) Can use tail to make AoO with a reach of 5 ft, natural attack that deals 1d8+Str damage
Sticky tongue(2 RP) Can make melee attacks with long sticky tongue, a creature hit by this attack cannot move more than 10 ft from the attacker and takes a -2 to AC as long as the tongue is attached. Tongue can be removed by the target or an adjacent ally by making an opposed strength check against the attacking creature as a standard action or by dealing 2 points of damage to the tongue (AC 11, damage does not reduce the sticy-tongue creature’s hit points) Can release the target as a free action, can only have one creature attached to its tongue at a time
Claw (2 RP) Gain two claw attacks, 1d4 base damage, primary natural attacks
Natural Attack (1 RP) pick one of the following natural attacks : gore, hoof, slam, talons, or wings. Receive on natural attack of the chosen type. Gore, slam, and talons are primary attacks while hoof and wings are secondary. 1d4 base damage. This trait can be taken more than once. Each time pick a different natural attack.

Total = 25 RP

As my race, the one from Avalon?

So you're refusing to cooperate and we're just going to use the same thing?

well presumably we will have different archetypes

MG, can I have a ruling,
would you rule that the black blade of a blade bonded magus can take the form of a crystalline focus item?

I'm just doing my original idea. I don't care what anyone else does. If all works out, no one is similar. If it does, screw it.

I'm seeing this as a mix of The Hunger Games and Super Smash Brothers with some fan fiction of SSB for the roleplay.

Would you allow the gestalt classes (aka mystic theurge, cerebramancer) so long as I keep it entirely contained on one side of the gestalt? Like, getting all the requirements for it on that side of the gestalt and then using that same side to level in the class.

Where have you been, Jen? I miss you in Avalon. :(

I am here lets see if I can do better this time.

Is this another joke? If not, what did you do wrong in the first place?

not really a joke.

I have been i think three or four of these arena's and each time I thought I had a cool character.

in the end the longest lasting character I had was an archer ranger but by the time I was able to get past the summons and the animal companions of my opponent I was nearly dead. could not get a good spot to use the bow.

another time was epic level, I had a horizon walker that could make any terrain my most favored terrain. my first combat was open field against a mega strength massive fast high movement barbarian that could fly.

round two I was back to the drawing board.

another one we got a surprise round to do a buff then allowed combat to begin.

after the surprise round I was making my next character.

partial charge camel with a lance was surprise round charge and splat.

BTW why camel? they have good movement and a ranged attack that causes blindness. (that was a level 1 starting arena.)

2v2 is somewhat better when the two can work together.

ask whack a rogue about the other arena. I never even bothers rolling dice beyond initiative.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Too much work to do. :(

I miss a day or two in Avalon and the thread advances ten pages. Can't keep up with that. :P

OK, since there seems to be some discussion over builds, I'm going to say that Magus Black Blade and Soulknife mindblade, do not stack.

Foul, pick one or the other, or both, but they would be separate weapons.

Shadow Lodge

dang, ah well that makes the build so much less awesome, not having an intelegant light-saber
redesign just a tad

will we be gaining XP/lvls?

Shadow Lodge

just clarifying your wording
are you saying that hat I not posted that build here I may have been able to stack the class features???

No, the Black Blade is supposed to be a specific weapon, and while one could theoretically make it a Soulknife as well, I feel the two should generally be mutually exclusive. Its more of a flavor ruling than anything else, but your asking sparked a need to make a decision.

Of course, even if you had just gone ahead and made the build without asking, I might have had done the same anyways.

Leveling will likely happen, I'm just not positive how yet.

Still room?

There's always room, but you'll need a partner. Maybe Jen?

? :D

Um. Not sure. The only thing I worry about is if it would be a little too much, and sorta unbalanced. Gestalt games usually don't allow those PrCs, so I'm not sure.

If some of the other players want to weigh in, that would be appreciated.

my only thought is with the use of the psionic classes / rules will I be the only one that does not pick psionic stuff.

does that say anything regarding psionics?

I'm not taking any Psionic stuff. :-)

Regarding how balanced they are, my (limited) understanding is that they're really incredible at "going nova" once or twice a day but run out of power very quickly. Most people I've read rank them as Tier 2 classes. So, quite powerful, but not quite as good as a Wizard/Cleric/Druid. Your experience may vary. :-)

in an arena type thing the nova thing will be big as you only need to go nova once and win then rest for the next bout.

Shadow Lodge

With the ruleing on black blades I might not be doing soul knives, and really soul knives aren't casters, so that doesn't effect that
But I will point out that psionic powers are generally less potent than spells, to get them on the same tier you have to spend extra power points... If the fight drags on, or if the other team goes nova when you were trying to conserve points...

Well, I don't need the dual-advancement PRCs. They are just more interesting than the other route that I was going to, but anyways. :D

Probably my character will capture the feel of having the dual-advancement PRCs regardless.

What do you feel about templates? Can we use them as part of one half of the gestalt, like back in 3.5?

The arenas that pop on here always tend to garner my attention and this one is no different. However, I do have a few questions before I put forth a character.

  • Are the new playtest classes fair game for this?
  • Are we allowed to take a normal race and upgrade it to match a 25 racial point race? For example, an Aasimar is considered a 15 point race. Thusly, could we choose to be an Aasimar and simply upgrade it with the remaining 10 points?
  • If so, would we still be allowed to use their favored class options?

Captain, yes, to all. Though, as above, subject to my final approval.

Jen, no templates, for now. MAYBE later, depending.

I have a fair amount of ideas for this, but I don't want to reveal them all now, so as to 1) not give me more work to do, and B) give the players more to worry about.

Alright, custom race coming your way.

Very well. I'll get an idea made and sent over to you. Otherwise, are we choosing who are partner for combat will be or are we going to be paired randomly? A mix of the two?

I think for the first round of fights, you guys can pick.

After that, we might mix it up, but we'll see.

We have partners, most of us.
It seems we're pairing up in attack and support pairs.
Maybe for later rounds we can be divided into "attack" and "support" groups and be paired off that way randomly?

Trying to approximate the Vetala with this custom race:

Type: Undead (16 RP)
Size: Medium (Free)
Normal Speed (Free)
Advanced (+4 Cha, -2 Wis, +2 Str, +2 Dex) (4 RP)
Standard Languages (Free)
Darkvision 60 ft (2 RP)
Light Sensitivity (-1 RP)
Resurrection Vulnerability (-1 RP)
Natural Armor +4 (5 RP)

How does an in dead get Cha bonus?

Most undead get Cha bonuses. Partly because it replaces Con for them in many ways, but also due to the whole force of personality often associated with becoming undead.

Shadow Lodge

same way Illithid get them

Oh.(I'm still kind of a noob in the game technicality knowledge area...)
Weird.
I think they should get it for personal things like cha based casting, but take negatives for appearance based things like diplomacy and perform.
Of course, I mean this for ugly things like zombies and illithids.
Vampires and undead that aren't scary, of course, not the same thing.

I just tried to approximate the stat bonuses that the template gives, but obviously because it's a +2 template, the stats for this race are not nearly as good. :D

Is it good to go?

----

Vetula is a type of vampire.

Shadow Lodge

illithids are mind controllers, just a reminder Magic.

And CHA doesn't necessarily relate to physical appearance. It generally has to do with your force of presence, how much people pay attention to you, that sort of thing. I've played ugly characters with 5 CHA, and ugly characters with 18 CHA. :-)

Jen, race looks fine.

All: Let's say Monday night is the deadline for people to get in ob the first set of matches, hmm?

Shadow Lodge

however it generally correlates to physical atractivness, but it's ad hoc ergo propter hoc (with this therefor because of this), people with high charisma are usually pretty, because people typically pay more and better attention to pretty people, not the reverse (though I suppose if people pay attention to you, most people would then put forth effort to look better)
it's circular

K.
I don't know when I'll finish. Lots of things to pick. Trying to finish it soon.

Made an Evoker, just need to make some tweaks and pick out spells. (One side of the gestalt looks really messed up, because it's all augmenting the wizard part of the character).

Wonderful chance to test out the ultimate evoker.

Cpt, I'm assuming you're keeping the standard SLA of the Aasimar, or are you choosing one more fitting for your concept?

Seems ok to me either way.

I think I'll stick with Daylight. I don't want to pull too much from the Aasimar feel. Even though I technically don't need Aasimar to get what I want now.

How many RP is dark vision 60 worth?
