I'm pretty busy this week, so it might take me a couple of days to get the gameplay thread up and running. In the meantime, why don't you guys read over each other's sheets, and think about any possible connections your characters might have pre-game. Prep work for a game this high level can really make a difference before starting I feel like.
If there are any questions before we start, feel free to fire away.
I'll get gameplay up as soon as I get a chance, and then announce it here.

Apex the Gallant |

Jelani, are some minor gear visions alright? Also, if I remember, we aren't playing with age penalties/bonuses, correct? Based on one of your comments from the first page of the recruitment threat, I got the impression that we weren't, so I made Mona a bit old than middle aged for timeline purposes.
Iko, what would you think of Morgan and Apex at first glance?
EDIT: Geez, I keep getting using her old name.

Yeah, you can change gear up until your first post in gameplay.
No age modifiers.

Hey Apex/CDL, looking forward to gaming together again -- and hopefully completing the Witchwar Legacy this time.
Matt & Omni, I think this'll be my first time playing with you two & I'm looking forward to it!
CDL, to your question Apex looks fantastic. Fun, flavorful, and very very useful. You just asked about "Mona" though. I see Morgan + alter ego Apex. Who's Mona?
A couple questions/possible errors on your sheet:
- Stats spoiler shows +6 to INT from level adjustments >> Should be +4, unless I'm missing something
- Skills "Total Ranks: 172 [ (8 * 16) 128 Arcanist, +48 Headband]" >> Looks like that's just your +8 INT * 16 levels, & your headband. Did you forget to add the two/level you get as an Arcanist?
...and if I have only that few errors on Iko's sheet I'll be quite pleased! ;-)
Other randomish thoughts
- Every time that I see that Apex has TWO wands of Negate Aroma I crack up. (It seems smart, and together with your feats makes you an awesome scout...but it still makes me think that maybe Apex has some problems with his digestion, and maybe some Beano would've been cheaper.)
- Wand of lesser restoration seems wise as groupish gear. I'd picked up 6x scrolls of lesser restoration and 1x of standard restoration...but maybe I should trade those for other cleric spells we might find a need for. Speaking of which:
I'm our only divine caster but I'm fairly melee focused and expect to use many of my slots on buffs -- some shared, some personal at swift speed (due to fervor). So as to keep slots free while still being ready to help the party, I've got the following consumables on my gear sheet which I intend to use on whoever needs'm. If any of your want to recommend more/less/different toolbox for my
- wand of CLW 50/50
- wand of Infernal Healing 50/50
- 3x scroll - remove disease CL5
- 3x scroll - remove curse CL5
- 2x scroll - neutralize poison
- 3x scroll - delay poison CL3
- 2x scroll - invisibility purge
- 1x scroll - breath of life
- 2x scroll - protection from evil, communal
I haven't really done PF at quite this level before so please don't hesitate to suggest changes.

Apex the Gallant |

Same here!
lol, I keep calling her Mona. That was her original name, but I changed it to Morgan later on.
Any ideas for their shared backstory? He probably knows Morgan through the school, albeit rather loosely; both Alyah and Ruxy are in the same class, and Morgan's the more active parent with the Nightwish children.
After reading through his excellent history, I would say that Morgan would probably be... really cautious around Iko for what he did to Rathel. Nikolai's still an active Pathfinder, so she still knows a lot about the happenings of the Society. While he probably isn't quite as zealous as a paladin, to her, Apex seems like a potential target for Hei Feng's wrath.
Granted, Apex dropping dead for about seventy years means that he was never on Iko's radar at all, lol.
That initial stat breakdown were a holdover from another one of Morgan's distribution sets that I was testing. Her final starting Intelligence is actually 16. After racial, it increases to 18. After all level bonuses, it is 22.
The non-headband skills are right according to Hero Lab. Her regular skills are 8 (2 Arcanist, +6 Intelligence), and her headband gives her another 3 per level. 8 * 16 = 128, and 3 * 16 = 48. 128 + 48 = 176.
So I got the final number wrong. It probably would have been easier to say 11 * 16 = 172, lol.
Scent is the one way the only form of detection that Apex can't easily avoid. The Wands are by far the cheapest means.
A Wand of Lesser Restoration is a really good investment for this level. I have to heal off random ability damage and any Blood Money + Limited Wish strength damage I take.
Without an Oracle spamming Heal on us, we'll probably be taking 10 to patch ourselves up. I should be fine in and out of combat. I have boots that give me unlimited Fast Heal 1 as long as I stay planted in one spot. For combat, I can polymorph into a troll in a pinch and get regeneration.

Hi everyone!
I've been wanting to do some high-level short campaigns for awhile now, so this is looking pretty great, especially since I can get to play a version of my high-level PFS persona. However, I do have one concern.
I might have made a big mistake in that I may have aimed for too low of a power level, and I am sensing a future problem with Lady Gabrielle being dead weight if we end up in a fight. We already have a smallish party of four, and it might become a problem if that turned into three.
So, I'd like to ask the group and the GM for advice. What can I do at this point?

I picked you because you had better stats than the other ninja, and the "fighter". That, and your neutral alignment.
My advice is...don't die. Have a plan for every contingency, be patient, work together as a team. If you guys want to run a couple of random practice combats before we start the actual game, just to get a feel for each other, we can. It's highly unusual for a group of characters/players to just be thrown together at this level without any experience working together. Another piece of advice is to not hesitate to post contingent tactics during fights. Sometimes the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey of PBP can mess with tactics badly if people aren't paying attention and stating contingencies.
What I won't do is pull punches. Iko Ilue and Apex are going to pwn everything anyway if my predictions are correct.

gyrfalcon |

Just time for a bit right now. Looking to more thorough reading of everyone's backstory and crunch later.
@All -- exciting to see gameplay up!
- Any other coordination we want to do before diving in?
- I want to give everyone's backstories a fuller reading and haven't had time yet (and don't expect to today, though it could happen). If not today than over this weekend
- I like thinking who knows whom, and what we've heard about the ones that we haven't met yet. I mention it some in my backstory but, Iko's most recent adventure ended with interparty fighting, where a paladin and archon tried to take a chaotic, uncivilized, disease-ridden section of the Mwangi and remake it as a Heaven on Earth...and Iko (opposed to outsider meddling with nature of any stripe) fought them, killing the archon and tying up the paladin and sending him away.
- He of course has lots of other adventures in his past as well, and any of you who've been active in the last 17 years (a long time for him and Lady Gabrielle though a blip for Apex and Cael) could well have been on at least a brief mission with him.
- I'll look for it in my more thorough reading of backstories, but happy to get a little summary from folks about a few key, notable things we'd know about you.
@Apex
- Yeah, my confusion on the skill points.
- you mention a few planned uses for your wand of lesser restoration.
Given that, do you think it's enough for the four of us for this first adventure, or should we try to get another?
- To make sure I understand:
1. we don't know that Morgan & Apex are the same person
2. Morgan *might* be known as a pathfinder, but hasn't any major missions to her name.
3. Apex was a very active vigilante/adventurer, but has disappeared some time ago (how longish?) if she's raised a child since then then it was probably before Iko's career started.
3. I've surely seen Morgan around since as you say Ruxy and Alyah are both students of Blood's. Sounds like you're avoiding Iko Ilue out of...discomfort with his recent adventure. Iko for his part would surely have noticed her, but has always been a bit awkward and often withdrawn in such settings.
@Lady Gabrielle
-If you're happy with your build after reading Jelani's post then that works for me too. If you find yourself wanting to tweak your build, I'm sure you can propose that too...but I agree with Jelani that you shouldn't do it out of feeling you ought to to keep up. The last time I played at this high a level was likely AD&D (1e) so I'm sure I'll be surprised by all kinds of things about such high level play and power levels.
Time to work; more later!

Mattastrophic |

Okay. If you guys feel confident in Lady Gabrielle's abilities, then I can feel confident in my ability to pilot her in combat.
So, I figure, I can tweak Lady Gabrielle's equipment to be a bit more survivable, and a bit more in-line with where she was in PFS at this point:
-Drop her +2 weapon to +1, recover 10Kgp.
-Purchase a pair of cracked pale green prisms, adding +1 to attack rolls and saves (2x 4000gp).
-Purchase a cracked vibrant purple prism, and store a buff in it, probably shield (2000gp).
Would this be all right?
Also... since we've got three casters in the party, I imagine party-buffing will be a thing. I know that Lady Gabrielle tends to make great use of greater magic weapon, heroism, air walk, barkskin, stoneskin, and mind blank. Do you guys think any of those can be passed out?
-Matt

Lady Gabrielle |

On the matter of reputations:
-I imagine that Lady Gabrielle carries a reputation around the Grand Lodge of being rather well-suited to matters of diplomacy and negotiation, likely because she's never wielding weapons, wearing armor, or casting any spells, and doesn't spend any time sparring in the Grand Lodge's training rings or learning from Kreighton Shane, the Master of Scrolls.
-She first arrived in Absalom a few years ago when Amara Li came to the Grand Lodge in 4713 (PFS Season 3). And when Amara Li left in 4715 (PFS Season 5), instead of selling off the Lantern Lodge in the Petal District which served as Amara Li's residence (the one from First Steps II), Lady Gabrielle moved in. I'm envisioning this occurring after she was rather accomplished. She picked up the Absalom Elite trait at 15th level, representing her ascendance into the Petal District's community.
-Since Lady Gabrielle is an avid reader of adventure novels, she probably knows of the legend of the masked vigilante of Ustalav. It's possible that Morgan may have run into her at Absalom's temple of Shelyn as well.
-If Cael has spent any time in Sothis recently, it's possible that he's seen Lady Gabrielle at the Lodge there. As a Taldan aristocrat with pale skin, way too much clothing for desert conditions, and a parasol as her constant protection from the sun, she would have definitely stood out.
-If Iko has been around Absalom at all, he may or may not have noticed this polar opposite supposed-Pathinder around the Lodge? She doesn't even have any apparent magic items (thanks to her western star).

Iko Ilue |

Thanks for the notes, Lady Gabrielle!
Reputation: I assume on Pathfinder missions she has actually fought, and not just used diplomacy. Has she taken care not to have that published in Chronicles? If not, I'd guess we might know that she's more of a combatant than she appears.
Buffs: I will memorize Greater Magic Weapon & Air Walk with your name on them. I can't cast any of the others you mention.
I also just took a cue from GMW and decided to memorize Magic Vestment x2 for my armor and shield, instead of paying for them to already be enchanted.
--Jelani, I assume that when you cast Magic Vestment +4 on a +1 brawling armor you +4 brawling armor (taking the higher enhancement bonus from one source, and the special ability from the other). Is that right?
Doing that gave me money to buy some more defensive wands:
- a CL15 partially charged wand of stoneskin meant mostly for myself
- a CL 11 wand of resist energy (30) with 28 charges, ready to share
- a CL 3 wand of mirror image with 50 charges
Apex or Cael: if one of you can memorize/cast Stoneskin on Iko daily, I'll skip that wand since it's 925 GP / charge, including the 250 GP of diamond dust. (I'd much rather just contribute the materials toward someone else's casting).

Lady Gabrielle |

Well, the way I've handled the on-adventures bit in her background is that she often is the actual author of the Chronicles for adventures she is involved in, and her stories tend to read like exciting adventure novels. So, instead of giving blow-by-blow transcripts, she uses narratives to stir her readers' imaginations. What this means is that each reader likely forms a somewhat different image of the Lady in his or her own mind.
Now that I think about it... she's got high modifiers in the three Cha-based social skills, and she also has ranks in Linguistics, so she is probably rather good at putting pen to paper and crafting stories that stir emotions in her readers. And of course, her curved-rectangular glasses can only serve to reinforce that notion, hehehe.
Also, I forgot one key buff from that list: mage armor.

Cael Windstrom |

My connection died so I had to use a resurrection spell and those are not easy to get when you have to work all day. Anyways I am back and reading over everyone's background and catching up. Forgive my slowness.
Cael still has a bit of gold. That being said, anyone have suggestions? I figured I would use it to make scrolls, but any other ideas are welcome. Note he has no material components for expensive spells even if he can cast them. Such as limited wish for example, which he does not have because it's a rubbish spell in my eyes. xP
@Iko Ilue
Cael may have heard of Iko. But unless Iko was an active pathfinder in his 30's then he has never been on a mission with Cael. Most likely his outsider hostile reputation has gotten Cael's interest in a bad way. So he may not be friendly towards Iko but would not be hostile ether as it's not in his nature.
@Apex
I don't know what to make of your background. A real loner and everywhere type at the same time. But the one thing that does keep popping into my head is Apex coming across some reports concerning Cael. Figuring out he has been selectively holding back information, investigating him. Then getting investigated by Cael in turn when he notices someone looking into his affairs. In the end they both find out each others little secret and choose to call it a tie and truce. xD
@Lady Gabrielle
She probably knows of Cael by his many reports and additions of knowledge, relics, and achievements. But mostly from old accounts and reputation alone sense he has been out of the spot light for well over a decade. Other then that I think they travel in very different circles so don't know much about each other.
Edit- Man I am slow today. >.<
Cael can learn Stoneskin and would not have a problem casting it but it's duration is only 10 mins/CL so it will only last 170 mins if Cael cast it. So do you mean once per battle in a day?
Cael cast Mind Blank, Greater False Life and Getaway on himself daily. He does not mind sharing Getaway if others are around for the casting. ;)

Iko Ilue |

@Cael, it's certainly possible Cael would have the impression that Iko is hostile to Outsiders (given how rumors and stories work) but just so you as a player know, Iko doesn't have a grudge against outsiders per se...he's just opposed to them trying to make his world into their world (or otherwise mucking up his world).
In terms of slyphs in particular, he might well have a bit of curiosity since his god is the Dark Wind, and slyphs are people with some of the wind in their blood.
EDIT: one casting / day if timed right might get us through the worst of things, but perhaps he'll bring a wand too, just with fewer charges. Note that Lady G was asking about stoneskin upthread too.
EDIT 2: A few more thoughts. I could see stories circulating about Iko from the sympathetic (he saved people both from Ydersius cultists and then again from meddling archons) to him being evil or hating good or hating outsiders... And with his personality (and a -2 diplomacy) he's not likely to have gotten his story across well. Heck, it's fun roleplay fodder if everyone in the party starts out believing he's a dangerous fanatic himself. He sure looks the part, and folks who know Hei Feng know he serves a god of nature's destructive forces.
As far as that goes, my picture of him is that he doesn't relish in destruction... But part of his having been claimed by Hei Feng is that he often has a tempest pounding in his head, and (to his chagrin) destruction is one of a few things that reliably quells it.

Apex the Gallant |

I have the Communal Version of Stoneskin, so we have that covered.
Also, I've settled on Morgan's final age as 170.
@Iko:
I'm probably going to get a second Wand of Lesser Restoration.
1) That is correct. Morgan went/goes to great lengths to separate the two personalities. The only person who probably has an idea is her husband Nikolai. He knows that she rescued him wearing a familiar looking mask, and she turned it into a bow when they teleported to safety, but it's been so long that he really doesn't think anything of it.
2) At the height of her career, Morgan was probably a mid-tier Pathfinder. In practice, she was mostly a secretary and researcher, but she did occasionally do work as Apex and then swoop in as Morgan to claim the credit. As such, she had a reputation for taking tiny leads and executing entire and often very successful operations out of them.
3) In the final version of their timeline, Apex has been publically gone for 65 (Morgan's spent the last year retraining herself into shape, and Blood's disappearance is Apex's official return). She's also raised about four children in that time.
4) Avoiding might be a strong way to describe it; I'd probably say highly cautious. Even if she would agree that imposing Heaven on Golarion was a bit much, Morgan loves it when good people make genuine progress with a major problem. At least on Golarion, disease as they know it stems from Urgathoa, so it isn't exactly natural to the material plane either.
@Cael:
Given how long Apex has been gone and only recently came back, you would have met him in the last year. I like the idea that they played the usual game of Sylph Cat and Mouse with one another before calling a true.
@Lady Gabrielle:
Morgan and Lady Gabrielle could certainly know each other through the temple; she has spent a lot of time there over the course of her time in Absalom, and given that has been over three human generations, she would probably know most of the regulars. I also like the idea that LG has read about Apex's adventures; I'm sure someone would have pieced together a few tales about him.

Lady Gabrielle |

Apex: Okay, so it sounds like the stories are something that only well-read individuals or maybe locals would really know about.

Cael Windstrom |

Here are some numbers concerning stoneskin, using Cael's caster level. Also throwing in if we had a Rod of Extend Metamagic.
Normal Stoneskin. 150 damage before it wears off, 170 minute duration so 2 hours and 50 minutes active on one person before expiring.
Extended Stoneskin. 150 damage before it wears off, 340 minute duration so 5 hours and 40 minutes active on one person before expiring.
Concerning the communal version, everything is the same except you split the duration among subjects. The good thing is the communal version is more efficient sense the damage absorption is not split and it cost less then the original componentwise if you do not use it on more then two subjects. Even if we do use it on more then two it's cheaper then multiple castings of the original.
Hope that helps somewhat.

Iko Ilue |

I'd be happy to go in for 1/3 the cost of an 11K metamagic rod.
I don't know if we're more likely to run into the damage cap first or the duration, but I expect it might well be the damage cap, so I suppose communal is really the way to go.
Morgan mentioned she has it too, so we're probably talking about splitting the duration 3/ways...but (if we're able to time it well) a casting each from both of you should give us great coverage, especially if those are often two of the three uses of the extend metamagic rod.
In fact, thinking about it this way: it basically runs out after being hit in combat 15 times. anytime where we expect prolonged combat (a handful of encounters back to back, as opposed to a single isolated encounter) we may not even need the duration extension. I could see this preventing 150 damage in 10 or 20 minutes of gametime.
I guess we'll see soon!!

Apex the Gallant |

I'm getting ready to post tonight.
Anyway, my gear is finalized. I dropped my Amulet of Mighty Fists from Holy to Undead Bane. I purchased an extra Wand of Lesser Restoration and Lesser Rod of Extend Metamagic. I upgraded my +1 Longsword to +2. I also got a Ring of Seven Lovely Colors and purchased another 1000 gp worth of diamond dust.
As for Apex's crunch, I swapped out Hasted Assault for Metamagic Knowledge (Quicken Spell). As cool as it is to get Haste on myself as a swift action, it is probably a lot smarter to get it on the entire group at once.

Cael Windstrom |

Added communal stoneskin to spellbook and 400 gp worth of diamond dust.
Also wanted to let you guys know OOC, two tricks Cael has. His hair has his metamagic gems woven in to disguise them as decorations. Also his ring of forcefangs has five charges, thanks to his quarterstaff. ;)

Cael Windstrom |

@Apex
I don't think Mind Blank covers your items. As the wording suggest information about the recipient not so much what they carry. The way I read it, focuses on that in fact. I treat it that way at least unless the DM says otherwise. Wonder if their is a official clarification somewhere.
@Iko
Are you going to answer my knowledge roll or the DM? Good ether way, just wondering. :)

Apex the Gallant |

In my opinion, Mind Blank was clearly meant to include gear.
The subject is protected from all devices and spells that gather information about the target through divination magic (such as detect evil, locate creature, scry, and see invisible). This spell also grants a +8 resistance bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting spells and effects. Mind blank even foils limited wish, miracle, and wish spells when they are used in such a way as to gain information about the target. In the case of scrying that scans an area the creature is in, such as arcane eye, the spell works but the creature simply isn't detected. Scrying attempts that are targeted specifically at the subject do not work at all.
It is the ultimate anti-divination spell. Not even Miracle and Wish beat it.
Trying to figure out if someone's items are magical is technically trying to gather information about them. It would really beat the point of the spell if I could just find an invisible Mind Blanked person by using See Invisibility to search for their invisible magic items.
Also, Mind Blank is clearly stated to block Discern Location, the ultimate divination spell, when it is used on objects.
A discern location spell is among the most powerful means of locating creatures or objects. Nothing short of a mind blank spell or the direct intervention of a deity keeps you from learning the exact location of a single individual or object. Discern location circumvents normal means of protection from scrying or location. The spell reveals the name of the creature or object's location (place, name, business name, building name, or the like), community, county (or similar political division), country, continent, and the plane of existence where the target lies.To find a creature with the spell, you must have seen the creature or have some item that once belonged to it. To find an object, you must have touched it at least once.
Again, it really beats the point of the spell if I could just bypass Mind Blank by searching for someone's magic gear.
However, I suppose it would best if Jelani makes a ruling on it.

DM Jelani |

RE:Mind Blank - My reading of the RAW is that is only affects the creature itself. Especially since the target of the spell is one creature, not one creature or object. But then that is confused by the text of discern location.
AFAIK being invisible makes the auras of your magic items invisible as well. Sooo, if you were mind blanked and invisible no one would be able to detect anything. If you are mind blanked but visible and someone is looking right at you with detect magic/arcane sight, your items' auras would show, but you wouldn't. I would still rule that mind blank protects your items from divinations that don' rely on direct line of sight though. So no scrying/whatever based on targeting your worn items while mind blanked. Does that make sense? If anyone can point to something official one way or the other I'll be happy to go with that.

Lady Gabrielle |

It's worth noting that Magic aura has a really long duration, so you can cast it a bunch of times and let the castings last for weeks.
Lady Gabrielle would certainly appreciate someone who could do that for her.
-Posted with Wayfinder

Iko Ilue |

Heh, good point Lady G. So you'd get 16 days / casting. If you plan to be out for two weeks, you could presumably just spend a day (or two) casting nothing but magic aura before you leave. Or have a rotation, where you cast it on one item / day (assuming you have 16 or less magic items.
While we're looking over our spell lists, would Iko (or one of the team members with better spellcraft) know how banishment would work on the moon?!?
It says "It enables you to force extraplanar creatures out of your home plane." I guess the moon is still our home plane...though if the moonscar is a demi-plane then I have no idea if that changes it.
Assuming it does work...it says "You can improve the spell's chance of success by presenting at least one object or substance that the target hates, fears, or otherwise opposes. For each such object or substance, you gain a +1 bonus on your caster level check to overcome the target's Spell Resistance (if any), and the saving throw DC increases by 2."
I suspect that (knowing we're going up against demons) I could gather a number of substances a demon "hates, fears, or otherwise opposes" (e.g. holy symbols of 20 Good and/or Lawful gods)...or maybe just a string of a dozens of cold iron trinkets. My questions is if there's any practical limit to how much I can boost this spell. (RAW, there's no limit listed but that seems odd).
Lastly, Cael & Lady Gabriel I'll wait a bit to post in gameplay, to see if your characters respond to being asked their names by Iko, after he introduced himself.

Cael Windstrom |

I know the DM has ruled on it already but dropping my 2 cp about banishment. As I read it, the bonus is per item or substance type. For example if you have one or twenty holy symbols you only get the bonus once. But if you have a holy symbol and say cold iron then concerning demons you get twice the bonus. It is not the number that grants the bonus but rather how many different types. Otherwise any priest powerful enough to make use of those spells living in a church would be pretty much untouchable by outsiders. If you notice Ceal has a cold iron holy symbol and silver holy symbol. xP
If I have a short response in game I will post in the morning, but long responses will have to wait til after work. I wanted to do justice towards you guys so will post shortly. ;)

That's what I meant. You can only get a bonus for each type of item once, even if you have 100 of whatever substance it is.
