Serolt looks at the town of Sandpoint, now just a short ways away. He ruffles Regin's fur and smiles.

I haven't had a shot of whisky or slept in a bed in ten days...

He walks the last little bit and enters the town, looking first to quench his thirst before hunting down Daviren Hosk to claim his reward, whatever that may be. He's still not sure what his cousin did back in the day but it's a point of reference in an otherwise strange town.

Perhaps he'll know of some work as well, my pouch is getting light.

Rise of the Runelords: Book 1.5 - Race for the devil

It's been nearly a year since the goblin attack of the Swallowtail Festival. A night to remember to be sure. And while there were many brave deeds that night, one unlikely bunch stood out. To hear others tell the tale, they alone stood against an unwavering horde of goblins bent on the destruction of all good things in the world.

This was not the case. But it is true enough that this unlikely band held their own and saved more than a few lives. If nothing else they held the line long enough for the Watch to prepare a proper defense and repel the goblins fully. Regardless, for their actions, real or otherwise, they would come to be known as the Heroes of Sandpoint.

And soon they would properly earn the title.

First they foiled the kidnapping attempt of Ameiko Kaijitsu by her half-brother, Tsuto. Next they depowered a powerful evil artifact known as the Runewell of Wrath. And somehow during all this they stumbled upon a conspiracy led by an Aasimar named Nualia, a priestess of Lamashtu who wanted to destroy Sandpoint in a bid to rid herself of her divine taint and become a demon.

But she hadn't anticipated the Heroes. And she was thoroughly defeated.

The group known as the Heroes of Sandpoint mostly went their separate ways after that, save for two who stuck around. But trouble well return to Sandpoint, and in fact has already. And a new band of heroes will be needed.

Because the Sandpoint Devil has returned.

A halfling sits at a table at the infamous local tavern known as the Rusty Dragon. He sips carefully from a mug of ale. And looks about him in anticipation.

He makes eye contact at the bar owner -- one Ameiko Kaijitsu -- for perhaps the hundredth time that hour. The beautiful woman rolls her eyes at him and smirks.

Sitting next to him, is Sergeant Beromar Copperkettle, an official member of the Watch under Sheriff Hemlock himself.

The halfling fidgets uncomfortably.

To the new heroes...

Each one of you has received the following message, personally delivered to you by one Ameiko Kaijitsu.

Dear xxx,

Your services have been highly recommended to us by one Ameiko Kaijitsu. And therefore we, as representatives of the township of Sandpoint, have an offer of employment.

You will be paid the grand sum of 500 gold measures -- with 100 measures paid upfront for expenses, the rest to be distributed to you upon successful completion of the contract or to your loved ones to cover any funerary expense in the event of your tragic demise.

In exchange, you will be expected to locate and destroy the entity known as the Sandpoint Devil, which has been terrorizing the local countryside and its inhabitants.

If you agree to the terms of this contract, or simply wish to hear more details, please arrive at the Rusty Dragon on the 23rd of this month promptly at 2 PM. Refreshments will be provided.

Signed,

Bruin Greenleaf & Sergeant Beromar Copperkettle - Former Heroes of Sandpoint.

Beromar sits at the table and looks to Bruin and then again to Kaijitsu. The Dwarf has come quite aways in Sandpoint and despite always giving the impression that he does not care for any one has actually grown accustomed to life in this friendly place. People looked up to him, and actually listened to him. He'd even killed two giants this past year but for months now none had been sighted and that made him and the small halfling seated next to him somewhat nervous. The Dwarf stoically takes a sip of water from a simple earthen bowl and looks to Bruin.

Ye think the lads is gonna show up?

"Sweet Starsong, I hope so. I don't look forward to tracking a flying devil horse with just the two of us. Especially since I'm a bit out of practice with this whole adventuring thing."

Ameiko moves off to a corner where there is a small stage. She takes a lute and begins a fun little tune about a squirrel playing atop a dragon's hoard.

Amaya stares somewhat blankly when Ameiko hands her the note, rereading it multiple times. "One of your famous 'jokes', dear sister?" She asks, a bit uncertain of where the joke would actually be if there was one. "Sandpoint Devil... really." She shakes her head, a smile spreading across her face. "Or perhaps you're simply telling me that I've overstayed my welcome?"

Mruf had been more enthused than Amaya when Ameiko handed him the note. "You recommended me? I'm flattered! Does this mean you're taking up the mantle of adventurer again?" he asked brightly, stuffing the paper into a pocket.

***[Later, at the meeting]***

Mruf winced when he saw that the halfling was sitting with a dwarf. He glanced over at Ameiko, who jerked her chin at them - go on, get over there!

Mruf sighed. Well, surely not every dwarf in Golarion could be after him for what he'd stolen. Keeping his long-barreled, finely tuned gun under his cloak as he approached their table, he tried to seem relaxed.

"How's it going? I'm Mruf, quality adventurer," he said cheerily, pulling out a chair and plopping into it. "Ameiko said you're the folks to see!" He produced the invitation, just in case they were in doubt. Smoothing the crumpled paper out on the table, he pushed it toward the two, keeping his paw on it. Just in case. His tailtip flicked nervously as he tried not to look too much at the dwarf.

Serolt had been in the town just a short while, staying at the only inn that would have him. He was surprised when the proprietor handed him a note, and even more surprised at the contents.

True, he had hoped for some work, but this was unexpected, and generous.

A good start, and with this cash, and a little luck, I can make a name for myself.

He watches as the cat-folk walks up to their table. He pets Regin and murmurs, "Should we join them good fellow? I think we should." he hesitates only briefly, then rises slowly and easily.

Regin pads behind him as he walks across the bar and shifts an empty chair on the same side as the cat-folk.

"Greetings, I hope I'm not intruding." he opens as he too puts his invite on the table, if a little less scrunched. "I'm Serolt, at your service." he says simply as he sits.

Though he has many questions, he decides it's more polite to let them speak first, and he holds his tongue.

Amaya & Mruf:

When Ameiko handed you the letters...

"I love having you here. You know I do. But I've seen the look on your face. You're not quite ready to settle down. And you need to get out and do something reckless. So why not do a little good at the same time."

To Mruf, she says, "My adventuring days are over. I have my tavern to look after.  But Bruin and Beromar are good folk. They'll keep you safe."

Serolt is a Shoanti warrior with all that implies. He’s not particularly tall, for a Shoanti, but he is broad and well built. He wears chain amor and has two deep quivers along with a bow strapped to his back. A bulging sling bag rests over one shoulder, and a dagger and long sword stick out from his belt.

Though bristling with weapons, he doesn’t come across as intimidating as he often seen playing with his Fire Pelt, a friendly nuzzling creature named Regin. (A black-and-red-furred mountain lion known to stalk much of northwestern Varisia. The color of their pelts changes from predominantly black to a range of autumnal colors with the seasons.)

He has a few tattoos, nothing terribly obvious (upper arms and back mostly - a natural patterned design) but he’s interested in getting more if he finds a skilled artisan. Not readily noticed, but certainly distinguishing, Serolt is missing his left pinky finger at the knuckle.

He grins as he speaks, ”I’m Serolt, of the Shiikirri-Quah, which in common translates best as Hawk Clan. Thank you, sir, for your blessing. Though I favor Erastil myself, I certainly have no fight with you fine Desna folk!”

”I’ve come out of the hills searching for ways in which I can aid the local community, maybe setup shop as a local guide, when I get to know the terrain around here a little better at least.” he smiles. ”But I’m intrigued by your offer. Seems a steep price to take out one devil, so I must assume it’s a tough devil indeed. Well, you have my bow, if it can help, and Regin’s fearsome bite, for what it’s worth,” he tousles Regin’s fur, ”and anything else I can do to help with the cause.”

"To be fair, Master Serolt, it's only a lot of money if we succeed in destroying the Sandpoint Devil. We could fail. But that would be disastrous for this area. The Devil has a voracious appetite or a blood lust. It's been taking away one or two livestock every night. Many of the farmers in this area cannot afford those kinds of losses, especially with winter coming."

Before

Amaya smiled at Ameiko. "Ah, you know me well." She looked back down at the letter again. "I'll be there."

After

The others have already sat down together as Amaya arrives. "Thank you for waiting." She begins. "I was watching from afar, attempting to decide if you were worth approaching. If you looked foolish, or as children, I wouldn't have wasted my time."

Amaya herself looks surprisingly unprepared for an adventure, wearing comfortable-fitting robes, seeming both modest yet breathable in the summer air. Her hood is down and her dark hair flows down to the middle of her back. Strapped to her back is a simple, yet sturdy looking staff. Sparing a quick glance at her sister, Amaya turns back to the others. "Ameiko and I often have different tastes in people, so it's, you know, I wanted to be sure." She adds quietly.

A wry grin spreads across her face, and she makes a short bow. "My name is Amaya."

Sergeant Beromar Copperkettle is all the introduction the bald Dwarf has to offer as he carefully musters all in attendance. He eyes Mruf longest, maybe because he has yet to come across a Catfolk in his lifetime. Maybe because he can smell a thief from a mile away...this one doesn't look as if he has ever been to Alkenstar however as his attire is what many would consider traditionally Dwarven, a heavy suit of armor and a an axe which seems somewhat out of proportion in this otherwise peaceful place.

Well nough o pleasantries. Mruf is a catfolk with the black, grey and white patterning of a snow leopard, attired in a well-used but well-kept chain shirt. Something long is concealed in his cloak, likely a firearm if one were to judge from his bandolier, and a large knife and a mace are hooked to his belt.

If catfolk could sweat, Mruf would have been sweating under Beromar's hard gaze; instead his tail twitched incessantly. He eyed Amaya and Serolt sidelong as they spoke, contemplating whether she was as kind and fun as her sister, and whether he should greet the firepelt, to distract himself. He relaxed a bit when the dwarf spoke of their quarry.

"Demon killers?" he exclaimed, impressed. "Has Sandpoint seen a lot of demons like this Sandpoint Devil? Is there anything you think we'll need to defeat it?"

"We actually have fought several different demons, yes. Although, I wouldn't say we've made a habit of it. And, of course, we had help."

Bruin then looks down at some notes in front of him.

"The Sandpoint Devil is said to have been terrorizing this area for centuries. It's never been killed or captured. And it usually only hunts three or four times in a year, and then remains dormant for about twenty years or so. This rampage it's undergoing is unheard of."

"It's also worth pointing out that we have no solid information on this creature. It's called the 'Sandpoint Devil', but that doesn't mean it's actually a devil or demon. It could be a magical creature, an aberration, or perhaps even some sort of fey. Is it feral? Is it intelligent? Or is it even a solitary creature, and not a species? We honestly don't know."

"If I may?" Bruin then moves his hand and says a word of power as his eyes briefly glow blue and looks at everyone gathered.

"I see all of you have some magical items about you. That's good. If this creature is indeed a demon or devil, then you should purchase a weapon of cold iron. Some silver would not be a bad idea either."

"We have stories that say it breathes fire. But we can't be sure of that. Still it doesn't seem like a bad idea to be prepared for that possibility."

Bruin reaches into a sack on the table and pulls out several small bags of coin. He also finds a set of contracts, and hands them out.

"You can read them over, but the contract is very straight forward. Sign it, and I'll hand you 100 gold measures. The Sandpoint General store is nearby and should be able to outfit you with nearly anything you need."

"Any questions?"

He takes a deep breath, ”I’m ready now.”

Serolt reads the contract carefully, as Ifor taught him the civilized world runs on these things, and they don’t always say what the man behind it says. If there’s nothing untoward in it, he signs with a flourish and hands it back.

”My arrows are cold iron, and I can coat them with silver blanch, if the local shop has it. Shouldn’t take but a half hour to kit myself and prepare my arrows. Are we to hunt the surrounding countryside then? I have some skill at tracking, but a flying beast is hard to pin down.”

When the meeting is over, he’ll head to purchase some further 20 cold iron arrows (2gp) and enough silver blanch to coat 60 arrows (30gp) if it’s all available. He’ll then find a fire, perhaps the one in the inn if it’s permitted, and he’ll coat the arrows carefully, including the ones he already has.

"If all we have to go on are superstitions and rumours, that's also a possibility." She pauses for a half second before adding, "Still, you're right that we should try to be prepared for the possibilities, however remote. I'll pick up something cold iron."

She picks up the contract and reads through it before signing her name with surprising clarity and style. As she hands it back to Bruin, she cocks her head. "When do we start?"

Bruin signed his own name and added it to the growing pile of paperwork. Picking up his own bag of gold, once everyone had signed, he turned to Beromar.

"I'll be back soon. I need to drop these off at the Mayor's. And I had a meeting with Father Zantus."

And then to the others he said, "I look forward to working with each of you."

***

All may peek inside.

Later...:

Bruin walked into the Sandpoint Cathedral. He stopped at the shrine to Desna and prayed.

"Blessed is the long road, the destination, the homeward path, and all who make the journey. Let each dream be a bright star in the night sky of your mind, and let it light your path in the day."

A soft voice continued the prayer, "Do not be troubled if your dream falters, for there are countless stars in the sky and countless dreams to experience—pick a new one and change your course. Oh, wondrous, Starsong, keep us in your dreams."

Bruin turned to find Father Zantus just behind him. The halfling priest bowed to the man who he respected so much.

"I have your scroll, Bruin."

Bruin smiled. "You always had the best timing, Zantus. Have I ever mentioned that?"

"Oh, don't suck up. Besides, I'm afraid the scroll was a bit more expensive than I hoped."

Bruin winced, but he had been expecting this. "How much?"

"The scroll was 700 gold measures."

Bruin turned as green as his cloak. "I-I--well, nothing for it, then. I have 500 now. And I could give you my armor. It might take some time to find a proper buyer, but, you should--"

"Hush, Bruin. I'll not hear of it. You can give me half now, and the other half once the Sandpoint Devil has been taken care of."

"I might not survive."

"Yes, well, I imagine your odds go down rather significantly if you try and take on this beast stark naked. So I won't hear of you selling your armor. Besides, it's the least I can do for a Hero of Sandpoint."

Bruin smiled back at him.

"Thank you, Father." He wrote Zantus a note for 375 gold measures, and then signed and stamped it.

After the business part was done, he opened the scroll, and sighed in relief, when he could understand it. Hopefully, he would still have enough of the Goddess' blessing to cast it when the time was right.

"Bruin--you are still in the good graces of the Goddess. She has not abandoned you."

"I know she hasn't. But I did abandon her. It happened the moment I tried to run and leave my friends. I am simply not worthy of her grace. And the slow loss of my powers is proof of that."

He turned and walked away but before he could step outside, Zantus called out, "She doesn't care that you ran away, Bruin. Only that you ran back."

Bruin nodded politely, and then left.

Wouldn't do to set the town on fire. he laughs as he calls Regin to him and strides back to the bar.

He enters and looks for the others, ready to begin the hunt on their command.

I got the impression that you two already knew each other from your respective back stories. I sort of assumed that you two had collaborated.

TLDR Yes it's fine.

Looks like everyone is ready, so I'll be moving us along.

When asked about the need for horses, Beromar assures everyone that they would not be necessary. He then shows them a map of the Hinterlands, that show off the attacks. The attacks form a pattern that suggest that the attacks are coming from an area known as the Devil's Platter.

"And, yes," Bruin adds, "the place is so named because it is supposedly linked to the Sandpoint Devil, and is considered a possible refuge for it."

The Devil's platter can be reached in less than a day of travel.

"The area is not exactly mountainous, but still a little too steep for horses. And it's one of the few places where firepelts can still be found in any kind of abundance. Also wolves. And any horses would be picked off quick if we tied them up somewhere."

"The area is also a known haunt for the Birdcrunchers-a small tribe of relatively nonaggressive goblins that dwells in numerous caverns along the Platter's edge. Which isn't in any way meant to convey that they're friendly. These goblins may not openly attack the farmlands, but they'll happily kill whatever comes across their path. Still we don't know much about the area so perhaps interrogating a goblin could net us something."

The new party heads south from Sandpoint across the bridge, and then east along an old farmer's road. After about an hour of travel they head south into the Devil's Platter.

Serolt has the highest survival skill at +10, with Beromar close behind at +8. I'll have Serolt make the check with Beromar attempting to aid.

Beromar Survival Aid: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17; +2 to Serolt.
Serolt Survival: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 2 = 13

Wow. Can't make that up.

The Devil's Platter is particularly hard to traverse this day due to the wind sporadically kicking up tufts of stinging sand. It doesn't feel like much progress is made before it starts to get dark. The party begins setting up camp for the night--remember it was already the afternoon when the party met at the Rusty Dragon--when suddenly they notice a faint light in the rapidly approaching dusk. Could be a campfire.

What does the party want to do?

"Are there many campers in the wilderness this close to town?" Mruf asked doubtfully, a niggle of suspicion in his gut. His curiosity immediately began to gnaw on him, hard.

"Even if there aren't, we should go have a look. We might save ourselves the trouble of setting up camp if it's peaceful, and if it's not, we should keep the farmers in these parts safe by dealing with it." Amaya knew that tail-twitch and expression. Mruf just wanted to know what the light was; he could always come up with plausible justifications for what he wanted to do out of curiosity.

"Sometimes firepelt poachers come here. But I doubt they camp in the Platter. I agree with Mruf, we should approach."

One more agreement, and I'll consider that a decision.

The party approaches the light in the distance, but stop about a hundred feet away. It is indeed a campfire. But there is no one around. The party waits but no one returns. Eventually they decide to approach the campsite.

Perception DC 20:

Bow already out, as soon as Serolt spots the creature he dives behind the rock as instructed, then he steps out (5’ step) and opens fire. Is there a map?

Bow (cold iron, magic): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Bow (cold iron, magic): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

He keeps Regin close in case the creature lands. Regin prepares to snap at it…

I usually get up a map, but considering how this is a flying opponent in an open space, I figured it was best not to.

Fly DC 10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Serolt let's fly with two arrows. The first lands in the creatures wing, the second is buffeted away by a flap. The flame drake shrieks in pain, but doesn't fall out of the sky.

The drake dives in closer and attempts to bite down on Serolt in revenge.

Bite (power attack) vs. Serolt: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21; hit!
Damage (piercing & fire): 2d6 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 9 + (6) = 20

The drake lands a devastating bite. And Serolt finds out the hard way that the drake's bites also burn.

Serolt Hp 13/33. The drake used too much movement to do a flyby attack. He's only 10 feet up in the air, but still slightly out of melee range unless someone has a reach weapon.

Move action draw long hammer. Swift action activate Challenge which grants all threatening allies a +2 circumstance bonus to melee attacks. Also Beromar can bodyguard as part of an AoO so if the drake attacks before it moves add +4 to AC of the next target. Actually I think Beromar prolly could have used it for Serolt on the last attack as he was not flat footed.

Beromar pulls out his trusty longhammer and whacks the Drake while calling out tactical commands to his allies.

Ready your bows or polearms. Hit it quick before it evades us!

That's a good point, Bero. Serolt, you take no damage.

When the drake swoops down, Beromar brings his weapon to bear, causing the beast to rear back at the last second. He then lays a devastating attack of his own.

The drake is still in the same position as described before.

"Bows and polearms. Right." Amaya mutters dryly, looking at the ineffective staff in her hands and sais tucked into her belt. You didn't get flying creatures like this in the city, and even if you did, there were things around to climb, to leap off of.

Thinking for a moment, she grins at Bruin and his crossbow. "Ready to charge out there and make a shot count? You may only get one." She places a hand on Bruin's forehead and begins muttering to herself, violet energy surging from her fingers. After a few seconds, Bruin vanishes.

Cast Vanish. Bruin is invisible for 5 rounds or until he attacks. Gives him a +2 to hit against the drake and it is denied its Dex bonus.

Mruf, pacing at the back of the party, had drawn a long, strange contraption as they approached the camp. Standing behind the rock he'd taken cover at, he took aim with his mechanical object and fired it at the drake with a sharp crack.
