Afraid her allies may be paralyzed, Clara pokes one with a stick.
Okay, that seriously made me LOL.
Clara and her new pet are still in the other room. ;-) But when she gets into the room, her detect magic doesn't show any auras.
Vayu |
"Well ... this triggered it last time.", Says Vayu as he walks in Pistol in his hand looking for anything out of the "ordinary".
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Readied action to shoot anything that moves in the face ... unless it appears to be undead, then the necro can have another toy.
Lore Jorinson |
"I can see keeping undead in your basement getting expensive. You'd always have to replace the carpet..."
Lore moves in to the room and looks around at the statues.
"Guess we can move on if no one sees anything that has to do with missing people in here."
GM thunderspirit |
GASP! These ARE the missing people!
It's a medusa! ;-)
Vayu, you can't ready an action when not in initiative (and we're not).
On the flip side, I promise the baddies won't get an ambush-via-boxed-text either...cos, they can't ready an action when not in initiative either.
Meanwhile, the statues stubbornly persist in their not-moving-ness.
Clara Oswald |
"Right, these bore me. We should move on or smash them all so we can make some powder in case the others are invisible! Oh, wait, never mind. That would be rude. Lets just move on. I would flip a coin, but there is just one more door available, so I vote for that one. George! Would you please walk in carrying one of the spare oil lanterns? That would be great!"
Clara moves to retrieve one of the unlit oil lanterns from the room in which she found George, then lights it with the torch before handing it to her oversized teddy bear. She hesitates momentarily, then fetches the other and asks George to carry it as well.
"There, all we need now is a star to put on his head." Once her owl bear is properly decorated for Beastmas, she directs him to walk into the Storeroom labelled 3.
GM thunderspirit |
Okay, just need to move your pogs on the map (or, since I don't like to presume where the PCs go, give me or someone else leave to move them for you).
Vayu |
I moved some pogs ... everyone ok with that
Vayu is searching for traps ... especially on the big scary one right next to him.
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
GM thunderspirit |
Thanks.
As the party moves into the center of the room, a statue alongside the scriptorium door — one depicting a winged statue of a demon commonly found guarding temples in distant Vudra — animates and begins to move!

Clara, Lore, Payj are up!
Clara Oswald |
"I blame you for this Vayu. You just had to mention that they always animate, and lo and behold. . . George, smash!"
I have no idea what George's statistics are, so I will leave him in your capable hands.
Hoping her companion will do as he is told, Clara begins to cast a spell. Acid Splash
To Hit, Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
If Applicable, Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 1
GM thunderspirit |
Clara, please check your PMs for George's stats.
Clara's acid blob strikes the statue squarely, but does not appear to have any effect.
Payj |
Know Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Sense I've gmed this before I know I made my check and I know what these things are.
"Don't attack those things with a weapon unless you want to destroy your weapon!"
Casts Grease Reflex DC 16
GM thunderspirit |
Upon Clara's direction, George moves in to get a piece of the statue. Regrettably, his maw catches nothing but air!
Payj recognizes this as a caryatid column, though this one is smaller than normal. In addition to the ability to shatter weapons, she knows that they are immune to most magic (anything permitting spell resistance) and have DR 5/-.
Refl DC 16: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
The statue tries to move, but cannot maintain its footing in Payj's grease and falls prone!
It attempts to stand, provoking from George!
AoO!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
But alas, he cannot strike it!
Vayu, Azimuth, then rest of party up!
Azimuth World-Traveler |
Azimuth moves forward, into the room. He draws his weapon, despite the warnings otherwise. A weapon was a tool to be used. If tools broke, you replaced them. You don't leave a nail exposed out of fear for your hammer.
Double move to current location.
GM thunderspirit |
Azimuth moves up as Vayu shoots and misses!
Clara & George, Lore, Payj are up!
Clara Oswald |
Clara moves to pat her pet on the back, "Good boy! You can do it!" Bolster, +1 to hit, +1 temp. HP/HD (5), +2 channel resistance for 1 round
George moves to attack as directed, taking a 5 foot step back (because he can reach the statue easier than the statue can reach him, and to keep Clara as far from combat as possible).
Melee 2 claws +5 (1d6+3), bite +5 (1d6+3)
To Hit Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
To Hit: Confirm?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
To Hit: Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
To Hit: Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
GM thunderspirit |
George goes all full attack on the caryatid column! Two of it's natural attacks hit, but don't seem to to all their damage. They do some, however.
C 5
Lore, Payj!
GM thunderspirit |
Any of the statues in the room weigh less than 200 pounds?
Sure, why not?
Lore finds a knee-high statue of a monkey clasping cymbals. It might be valuable to the Blakros family, but hey, you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, right?
GM thunderspirit |
The statue stands again, triggering an AoO from George...
AoO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
...which hits...
dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
...but doesn't appear to do much; and also triggers Payj's readied action!
GM thunderspirit |
Payj's snowball hits the statue squarely and seems to do damage. However, since it has construct traits, it is immune to make the Fortitude-driven save condition.
The statue tries to move!
Refl DC 16: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Alas, it falls over again!
Best. Grease. Evar. :-D

Party up!
GM thunderspirit |
Vayu takes aim at the prone statue, but his shot sails wide!
Azimuth steps up and does, in fact, kick the statue when it's down! His blow makes his foot ache, but doesn't seem to deal any damage to the statue at all!
Clara (& George), Lore, and Payj!

Bump for Clara (& George), Lore, and Payj.

Controlled rage for +4 Str
Let's break some priceless works of art!
Lore brings the statue in his hands down on the fallen monster with all his might.
Improvised Statute Weapon: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 4 = 15
I'm not sure what kind of damage roll would apply...
GM thunderspirit |
I don't either, LOL, but because I love the whole concept along with the visual, let's say it's a touch attack, so it hits, and deals 2d6+ < Str modifier > and it'll ignore the DR in this case.
Clara Oswald |
Clara smiles, and steps away from combat, letting George handle it.
To Hit Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
To Hit Claw: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
To Hit Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
GM thunderspirit |
Clara moves back and lets her pet take front. George obediently steps up and full attacks! Both claws and its skeltized bite strike home, but only some of the damage appears to get through.
Lore, who hefted the ugly statue, brings it over and chucks it at its companion trying to kill them! It lands squarely on the other, breaking both into several dozen pieces!
Out of combat!
Only then does Lore see a sign leaning against the wall, clearly meant for when these priceless statues are on display.
GM thunderspirit |
What's next?
Azimuth World-Traveler |
Walking up to the next door in the same room, Azimuth sighs and pushes it open. The girls chances for survival had considerably dropped, in his mind, but he would at least return with a body if it could be found.
He steps in to the next room and has a look around.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
GM thunderspirit |
This dark, vaulted chamber serves as a scriptorium. Bare wooden shelves, empty except for some extra writing supplies (sheets of parchment, bottles of ink, and quills), line the eastern wall, and three desks with high stools stand in the center of the room between six columns. A small sign on the southern door reads "Archives—Private."
With his darkvision, Azimuth can make out a human-sized shape slumped in the southwestern corner, still clutching a club.
GM thunderspirit |
Azimuth steps in to take a closer look at ht e figure. It is quite clearly dead; its legs appear to have been eaten away, almost dissolved, and the corpse is already showing signs of putrefaction, with patches of mold on the skin. A broken lantern lies next to the body, its oil spilled on the floor.
From Nigel's description, Azimuth makes this out to likely be the remains of Hodd the watchman, who was sent to investigate the basement.
