doesn't that post belong in the discussion thread? just saying it's rather disruptive to the rp
Zeriax
Seeing Ryu surrounded, Zeriax presses his assault on the leader of their foes with two arrows in quick succession - "Defend yourself friend Ryu" - he urges his companion to fight defensively.
Flurry 1 on Leader: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 4 - 2 = 19Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Flurry 2 on Leader: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 - 2 = 7Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
His first shot seems to be well placed, but not the second - My focus is askew Master - he scolds himself, addressing his master, ever present in his mind.
DM Variel
I adjusted the map a bit as Oriana there is a wall there that prevents you from stepping into the library. I shifted your attack to the Chaleb outside instead. Garith I moved you up a 5ft as well to account for Ryu decimating the tiefling that you were going to attack.
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
1d8 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
2d20 ⇒ (9, 11) = 20+5+3
2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 5) + (5) = 12+1 each
Bottom of Round 1 recap
The brutality continues inside the library as the bound and gagged librarians can see the blood splatter amongst themselves without anything they can do about it. TO them matters went from bad to worse with the appearance of another tiefling but their hopes were renewed when the new tiefling attacked their captors. To add to the gore a frenzied barbarian hustled in cleanly beheaded the same tiefling injure just moments before. The headless body collapsed at the entrance but the head rolled away coming to rest at one of the librarians feet. Not able to take the stress any longer he passed out from the terror witnessed first hand. Taking advantage of the recently deceased, tiefling Garith steps up and bashes another tiefling hard enough to rattle him but not enough to drop him. Outside the fight continues on as well as Maelchar dips into his spells to protect himself while Zeriax and Oriana attack Chaleb. Both manage to draw red blood spraying anew the already blood soaked cobblestone. The damage is starting to pile up but Chaleb shows no signs of slowing down.
Top of Round 2
Not ready to concede a tactical mistake Chaleb hopes to down Ryu and gain the safety of the library where he can muster a better defense. TO that end he launches an attack at Ryu with his heavy mace. He connects again in a shower of crimson blood dealing 11 damage to the raging barbarian. The two teiflings flail helplessly though and manage to only nick the armor without being able to penetrate Ryu's defenses.
Good guys up for bottom of Round 2
Maelchar
Maelchar takes a 5' step to his left, and attacks Chaleb with the benefit of flank from Ryu, trying to deliver a devastating blow with his hammer.
to hit: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 2 = 23
dmg if hits: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2, 2) + 3 = 8
a solid hit, I hope, but crap for damage...hope someone else can get a piece of him too
"Get this guy, Oriana, we've got to get Ryu out of there in one piece."
Oriana Zeru
Chaleb was a hard one to take down.
Oriana tried once again with her magical morningstar, determined to aid Maelchar in the task for the sake of Ryu's safety.
Attack with +1 morningstar: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 2 = 16 (+2 for Justice Judgment with Judgment Surge)
Damage, if hits: 1d8 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 4 + (4) = 16 (additional 1d6 re Precise Strike if successful melee attack)
Well Mael, I had the opposite -- not so good hit but pretty good damage. Sigh.
Maelchar
well, we can hope a 16 hits
Maelchar
you should have walked around slightly and gotten into flank with Ryu... that would have made your attack an 18.. If he and Ryu are both still up next round, you can just step into flank, since you had to step up to attack him this round.
Zeriax
Guys, Zeriax has no Knowledge in Religion or Nobility - what is the symbol on the bad guy's shield?
Sir Garith Mordrand
|
no reason Oriana couldn't step up to flank
Taking a 5' step (if necessary) to stand beside Ryu and ajacent to both Caeb and the other tiefing, Garith attacks firs the injured one with his scimitar, and will follow up with a shield bash at either him or caleb.
slash: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 = 26 including celestia crusader

Lol, I forgot I was using a scimitar! Crit threat

from the d20srd (couldn't find it in the pfogc), but applies equally to pf:
Measuring Distance
Diagonals
When measuring distance, the first diagonal counts as 1 square, the second counts as 2 squares, the third counts as 1, the fourth as 2, and so on.
You can’t move diagonally past a corner (even by taking a 5-foot step). You can move diagonally past a creature, even an opponent.
You can also move diagonally past other impassable obstacles, such as pits.
Closest Creature
When it’s important to determine the closest square or creature to a location, if two squares or creatures are equally close, randomly determine which one counts as closest by rolling a die.
you can read the actual text at:

Oriana Zeru
Oh, I believed you. Was just never told that by another GM and that is frustrating. Thanks for the link, Mael.
DM Variel, if that is the case, then Oriana would have taken the 5 ft step to flank with Ryu before taking her shot at Chaleb. Is it too late to make that adjustment?
DM Variel
Fyi I just noticed as it wasn't in the profile but Ryu is down to -3 hp. So the option of Oriana moving can happen before or after her attack as neither one grants flank bonus.
garith I thought you are using Radiance? Going with that unless you show me otherwise.
Recap of bottom of round 2 thus far. Still have Zeriax and Pakak to go.
Maelchar steps up and aims a perfect blow as Chaleb. The force of the blow was not as much as he would have desired but the a hit was still a hit. Oriana likewise steps up to continue the assault on Chaleb. Her blow would have caved in the chest of bull moose but the armor of Chaleb holds and the force dissipates harmlessly. Garith steps up next to the downed Ryu protecting him with body and shield he lays into the wounded tiefling first. ?Longsword? Flashing in the twilight the sword skewers the tiefling and drops him to the ground. Turning quickly he plants his pivot foot and backhands Chaleb with the shield. The blow is immediately followed by a cry of pain. Blood gushing from the side of his face Chaleb wavers on his feet before setting his stance again with fierce determination.
Zeriax
Seeing Ryu fall down, Zeriax does not hesitate and unleashes another volley at the apparent leader of their foes - "I believe you have exhausted your chances for surrender - we will ponder the symbols on your garb after we have defeated you"
Are we all still shaken?
Flurry 1: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 2 = 3Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Flurry 2: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 2 = 18Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

which round should i go on? Enemy or Good Guy? Do i take a surprise action?
Among the enemy is Garith wearing the face of a tiefling, standing with a scimitar drawn, ready to fight! If I get to go in this surprise round
** spoiler omitted **
I figured i wanted to have my weapon out to twf an not have to take any action to draw them, and that the Radiance might draw suspicion from the tiefling. been looking for an opportunity to draw the radiance but it seemed better to TWF instead
Does LoH provoke? it doesn't say that it does in the entry and when using on self or an enemy it does not
Maelchar
Maelchar aims another attack at Chaleb if he's still up.. if not, he moves to stand over Chaleb's fallen body and attacks the foe on the other side of Ryu from that location.
to hit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
dmg if hits: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 6, 3) + 3 = 17
to confirm: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
addl dmg if confirms: 3d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 1, 3) + 3 = 12
Oriana Zeru
Zeriax, I think this is the last round (Round 3) of being Shaken as per GM's instruction below.
Dazzling display intimidation check on all result of 28 vs 10+HD+wis mod. Everyone but Sir Garith is shaken for 3 rounds + the surprise round.
Oriana Zeru
Oriana moved to L:5 last round (5 ft step). If Ryu isn't down (per his last discussion post), then she is flanking Chaleb with Ryu.
Determined to bring down Chaleb and attempt to heal Ryu, Oriana swings her magical morningstar at him once again.
Attack with +1 morningstar: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 2 + 2 = 22 (+2 Justice Judgement with Judgement Surge, +2 for flank)
Damage, if hits: 1d8 + 4 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 4 + (5) = 17 (extra 1d6 for Precise Strike)
I used the wrong mod on my morningstar attack last night -- was looking at my previous sheet. It should be a +6 to hit.
DM Variel
Maelchar and Oriana I will use those rolls for the next round as we have not finished the bottom of round 2 and the top of round three yet. Also don't forgt the shaken penalties. Ryu I did indeed miss the crowd control bonus to AC so you are at a 19 which does miss. Raging only adds 1 to your AC btw due to your armor.
Garith still looking up the LoH rules for AOO. As for the symbol on his shield, it is not a holy symbol at all just a stylized symbol that looks like it could be a reference to Iomedae. More than likely Chaleb uses it to deceive people into thinking he is an Iomedae follower.
Pakak
Pakak moves forward a bit, and his mouth opens seemingly soundlessly. Of course, his foe would not call it that.
Ear Piercing Scream spell on Chaleb
"Saving Throw Fortitude partial; Spell Resistance yes
"You unleash a powerful scream, inaudible to all but a single target. The target is dazed for 1 round and takes 1d6 points of sonic damage per two caster levels (maximum 5d6). A successful save negates the daze effect and halves the damage." So DC 14
dmg 1d6 ⇒ 1
DM Variel
fort 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Garith, don't worry about the reroll as with the failed save combined with Oriana getting a flank bonus as Ryu is still up does hit then Chaleb will drop leaving only 1 tiefling which effectively ends the combat.
Conclusion of fight
Ryu stands there a living pincushion. Beaten but not broken he provides enough of a distraction for Oriana to hit hard with her morningstar. That blow combined with Maelchar's simultaneous attack forces Chaleb to one knee. Pakak intones words of reality changing power. Once finished the vocalization stops but Chaleb drops both shield and mace in order to place both hands over his ears. Shaking his head in agony all he can do is kneel is misery. With the target kneeling without shield, Zeriax lines up 2 shots, one for each eye. His aim is slighty off, 2 inches to the right. Instead of both arrows hitting only the second arrow hits puncturin a new hole between the eyes killing Chaleb. The last tieflng looks around in bewilderment before Ryu takes the opportunity to stab him through the heart ending the menace.
Ryu is you don't want to kill him automatically let me know.
Maelchar
Maelchar breathes a sigh of relief when the last tiefling drops. He offers the suggestion, "Someone needs to search these bodies." Then he steps over the dead cultists and into the room with the bound librarians. He begins cutting them loose of their bonds and helping them up.
not meaning to step on anyone's toes or give anyone orders, it was just a suggestion and action to move things along.
Oriana Zeru
As Mael moves into the library, Oriana pauses and looks over the extent of Ryu's injuries. Turning to Zeriax, she quickly and quietly asks, "Can you use your scale to heal Ryu? His injuries require more than my limited magic."
Zeriax, I'm hoping you will heal Ryu because his injuries are pretty bad right now. And Oriana can only do 1d8+3 healing. Thanks. :)
Recollecting Mael's words as he passed, Oriana bends down and searches the bodies of their fallen enemy.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Sir Garith Mordrand
|
Garith steps up to ryu to catch hold of him, as after battle, the warrior is often rather exhausted for a time. "valiantly faught my friend. Aye, Zeriax, the scale os healing would be well suited to the treatment of Ryu's wounds"
Setting ryu down, garith looks over the shield of Caleb, as it has a sigil related to Iomadae, and looks over the tieflings blasphemous symbols.
Zeriax
At the mention of the scale's healing power, Zeriax simply nods - "Of course" - moving wordlessly towards Ryu, and letting the healing magic do its work
Scale Cure Moderate on Ryu: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (3, 6) + 10 = 19
Afterwards, he returns to the doorway, bow in hand, keeping watch.
Oriana Zeru
Watching as Zeriax moves to heal Ryu, Oriana nods her head and responds quietly to the monk,
"You have my gratitude for healing our comrade. We may need his services soon enough." Oriana is ever the practical one. ;) It isn't that she is unfeeling -- she is glad Ryu is not dead. But she's looking ahead at other possible threats as they make their way through the ruins of Kenabres.
Zeriax
"Arigato," Ryu says with a bow to Zeriax.
"Douitashimashite" - Zeriax responds with a nod to his companion, then turns to Oriana - "Making sure we are all safe to proceed will always be my priority. This scale" - he stares at it for a moment - "I still marvel at its power, and its origin. As I see it, it is in our possession to help us along our path as best as possible - I will use it as such"

The easy stuff first. On the body of Chaleb you find a light shield, magical heavy mace, magical banded mail, potion of cure light x2, and 45gp in coins. On the 3 teiflings you find 3 sets of lt crossbow, 20 bolts, leather armor, and shortsword.
The sigil on the shield looks like it should be Iomedaen but there are lines crossing the sword as if to cancel it out. It wasn't noticeable at first as blood was covering the marks hiding them effectively unless one stopped to search it.
The 6 librarians are soon freed and extoll all of your virtues for saving them. They are all adepts that served at the library. When Aravashinal hears that only the 6 of them are left you would have thought that he would collapse again. Instead he straightens his shoulders and starts to take charge of the 6. Not that he is ruthless, in fact the opposite, but the 6 librarians are relieved to have someone to lead them. Talking with them they tell you that the head of the library, Quednys Orlun was not at the library when it was destroyed he was by the Cathedral of Saint Clydwell. The destruction of the library was by a demon that looked like a worm. He used magic and enslaved demons to smash the building apart. He managed to steal several treasures but may not have gotten everything from value from the ruins.
Aravashinal is overjoyed at this news of Quednys and requests that you search him out. In the meantime he will stay here to supervise the 6 librarians and defend the area with his remaining magics and those of the adepts.
3d20 ⇒ (4, 16, 18) = 38
The adepts also inform you that The Kite has been destroyed and along with is the wyrdstone within. the demons are fee to go where they wish and are on the loose.
There seem to be multiple types of demonic cultists in the city. They have seen them from the library and they are not all of Deskari.
Finally they tell you that surely the worldwound has spread and infected the very air we breath. We will all be dead in a week unless something can be done.
Maelchar
"We will do what we can, of course... whatever that might be. A week is not much time, but if it is all we have, we will work the harder for knowing that. Hopefully we are not the last left who would work to restore things as they were."
Maelchar does what he can to reassure the librarians and while doing so, himself as well. It seems the more news come, the worse it gets. No matter, we must strive the harder to prevail.
"Aravashinal, if you would stay here and help the librarians, we will be glad to know that you are someplace that hopefully you can now hold against the evil. I hope your magic is up to the task. Blessings of Iomedae on you all and on this place."
Oriana Zeru
Oriana placed the CLW potions in her pouch and the rest she lay in a pile for the others to see. Oriana will hold onto the healing potions -- she is not claiming them for herself. If they are required for healing, she will use them on the group and herself.
"I will hold onto the healing potions. We may get hit again by the evil wandering Kenabres. I want to be prepared."
Oriana listened as Mael spoke with the librarians and did not interrupt him for he had manners better suited to such speaking.
Her mind wondered to So'rien and her parents. She wanted to know what had become of them, and, if they could be found, perhaps then they would have aid against a city infested with all manner of demon. Oriana looked over at her brother, Maelchar, her golden eyes saying more than words could ever do.
Pakak
Pakak looks at the library wistfully but knows his duty draws him elsewhere. He glances over the items that are magical, as he detects magic on them with his own hoping to identify them hastily.
Spellcraft 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Spellcraft 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
The talk of the wardstone has him worried, "Is there no way to repair the wardstone?"
Zeriax
Variel, what would be the fastest way for us to check the map of Kenabres? Where is it linked? Campaign info, or..? Wanted to cross check some references we got from the letter in the underground and now this update, to keep in mind the locations we would want to visit.
Aravashinal
1 hour before sunset at the Blackwing Library
Indeed Maelchar I will be able to reinforce some wards around this place if they are still intact. Providing we are not beset upon by a large force or too powerful of demons I am confident that I can hold this place as a bastion of strength and refuge. Should you need to fall back and rest this area will be yours to use while I am here. I must insist though that word reach Quednys as soon as possible. As the last riftwarden here I am limited on what I can do. If he is alive then together we can do mare together than apart. Alas even together there is nothing we can do to fix the wyrdstone I am afraid.
Pakak as you detect magic you notice a blip coming from one of the books that were gathered by the librarians for Chaleb.
Maelchar
"We will do our best to get word to Quednys as soon as we are able." He turns to his companions and the other rescuees and looks expectantly at Garith, who has become something of an accepted leader among them. "Are we ready to move on, then?"
Pakak
"Minor enchantment upon the banded mail," He mentions, as he walks over to the books that were gathered by the librarians for Chaleb. His face scrunches, "And this is magical as well." He picks up the book, and reads the title first IF it has one.
DM Variel
Although no title is on the front of it you are positive that it is a wizards Spellbook. Csting a quick cantrip of read magic you are able to peruse the Spellbook. It looks like most of the pages have been damaged beyond repair but there are a few pages that you can make out in their entirety. They include alarm, dismissal, dispel magic, magic circle against chaos, resist energy, and versatile weapon . The spellbook is worth 700 gp. In addition, a parchment scroll of dimensional lock is folded up and tucked into the book's pages.
Staying he for the night or moving on with the hour or so of daylight left?
Sir Garith Mordrand
|
I am not sure where everyone is at right now in terms of powers left for the day. we haven't rested yet since before we came out of the underground
Oriana has only one or two spells left, we only have one use of Zeriax's scale, and i know Pakak's used a few spells too, but I'm still good and have 4d6 worth of LoH left, so what do we think? May be good to stay the night, but if you guys think you hae the resources, we can totally move on if we can get Ryu healed up.
Sir Garith Mordrand

this is the same day as when we fought the Dretches and the ambush down at the end of the rope. we never ended up resting the night after we leveled. So you used rage that fight for con, which is why Oriana is so low on spells, and Z has used his scale twice. Dunno how Mael is as far as spells and Weapons go tho.
Maelchar
I have one spell left for the day, but I still have 5 uses of my iron weapon ability. Resting would be good, but I think I'm okay with moving on if that's what's decided.
Ryu Tadamasa

Ryu stands before Garith; his face covered with blood, gore and the remains of Tieflings as well as his own dried blood.
He shrugs.
"I'll follow your orders, as usual, Garith-sama," he says.
He glances at the city and shakes his head.
"We should have rested earlier - at Chief Sull's place," he mutters to himself.
"Shikata ga nai...Karma," he adds with a grunt.
He flicks a piece of the Tieflings brain matter from his shoulder and glances around.
"If we go on tonight, we may die - but who cares, we all die sooner or later, neh? Anyhow, I don't fear death anymore... I've long since written my death poem, so why worry?"
He watches Garith a little.
"If you wish to rest now; I'll rest - if you want to go on - I'll go on. Just say the word either way, Garith-sama it's up to you," he says with a friendly nod.
