Daeron Lareththor |

Daeron nods affirmatively at the hunter with a smile and says, "You've neatly summarized my plan. I will create the illusion that we were killed in battle with the undead. Perhaps some icy corpses that look like us alongside the bodies of a number of bison. It will take roughly three hours before I'm capable of casting such an illusion, however. If we go through with this, I should be able to re-cast any spells to defend against the cold."
Daeron smiles thinly and continues, "The danger seems to be that the dragon could possibly come upon us before we're ready for it. In addition, I don't believe that Garand has a ring similar to my own that allows me to recover my arcane power so quickly." He shrugs and casts a look around the area, mulling over their options. "If we go through with this, we should set up close enough to be able to react when the creature investigates but not so close that we are immediately discernible. Ideally this clever beast should be on the ground before he has a chance of seeing us. Perhaps there is a small cave or cranny near here that we can hide in? Otherwise, I should suggest we finish our investigation of the immediate area and then carry on with your plan, Akulayok. Any thoughts on these suggestion, friends?" Daeron directs his gaze to Garand, Pavel and Theoden with a curious twinkle in his eyes.
Once the debate has run it's course, Daeron wanders closer to the monolith and observes it, taking the time to bark out the command word to let him see magical auras. Disregarding the auras from the spells he'd cast earlier, he observes the structure, looking for any openings.
Knowledge(Engineering) if relevant: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Staying about 40 feet away from the creepy black building and near the rest of the party. I did a little more reading on it. Does this work, TCB? I don't know how long it's been since I last prepared spells so that will factor in.
I don't have a scroll, wand or an open slot, so I'd basically have to rest long enough to regain spells completely. That'd be 2 hours of rest (thanks to the ring of sustenance) and 1 hour of study (to pick my spells). I'm suggesting we find some place fairly close and in the spires, but where we'd have some cover against being casually seen

The Celestial Bureaucracy |
I believe the ring of sustenance allows you to sleep for only 2 hours, but you still can only prepare spells once per day. Not sure how CB will interpret that if you prepared spells that morning.
I'm pretty sure it's once a day, unless I see some other information. Imagine the exploit?!

Daeron Lareththor |

That's my interpretation as well but I wanted to check.:) No illusion then unless we think the dragon will kindly wait til tomorrow. We could still do it via mundane means of course.

The Celestial Bureaucracy |
You make a quick survey of the area. Thin and impressive needles of ice spring from the icy floor, creating corridors wide and narrow. The black monolith sits stout in the center, its black stone has texture, and with the right angle, you can make subtle swirls in the stone pattern. It doesn't seem to fit with the icy spires though.
As far as you can make, there are no caves here. Just ice and a great black monolith.

Daeron Lareththor |

Daeron, alerted by his fellows, looks around in alarm at the increasingly obvious vibrations. Could the dragon truly be coming up at us through the ice? Clever creature if so. Moving quickly to rejoin the party, Daeron casts a wary glance at the spires above. Should be getting out from under these things? If the vibrations get significantly worse I'm worried they may start snapping off and falling on us."
Moving to stick with Pavel.

Daeron Lareththor |

Daeron, observing Pavel readying himself for battle, nods at his friends wisdom and quickly points to Pavel and Theoden and says, "Manu, enlarge them starting with Pavel." As his little familiar pulls out the wand and complies, he begins chanting in draconic and, as he finishes the needed gesture, a translucent force shield that appears to be of Elven design pops into being and begins to float around him protectively. That should be enough protection for now... I hope. Best to be ready if the dragon is actually appearing. Daeron frantically recovers a pinch of ground mica from his component pouch and prepares to blind their foe should he appear.
Use Magic Device (Manu) to cast Enlarge Person on Pavel: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Use Magic Device (Manu) to cast Enlarge Person on Theoden: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Perception (Daeron) to spot where the dragon/thing may be coming from: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Cast Shield on myself and ready an action to cast glitterdust on the dragon if he appears. If it's not the dragon, I'll have to decide if I cast or not. :) Manu uses round 1 to pull his wand of enlarge person (did we have enough time for Garand to heal us all to full with the wand of cure light wounds that Manu offered?) and moves next to Pavel/Theoden. He starts casting Enlarge Person (successfully) on Pavel round 2. It should go into effect at the top of Manulani's next turn at which point he starts on Theoden.
I'm not sure what the remaining duration would be so I'm listing the full duration and when it was cast.
Just cast:
Shield (Daeron) - 7 minutes
Enlarge Person (Pavel) - 10 rounds
Cast when we started approaching the dragon:
Resist Cold Energy (Theoden)- 70 minutes

Cast this morning:
Mage Armor (Daeron) - 14 hours

Garand remains in place, saying, "Do not spread out and allow it to pick us off one at a time. Trust the magics to protect us from it's cold attacks."

Daeron Lareththor |

Sounds good. Perception 25 from before. Exact positioning depends on Pavel/Theoden as I'm kind of squishy. :) I'll drop my glitterdust readied action and make suggestions. If someone has better ideas than this, we can go with that.
Daeron acknowledges Garand's wisdom and remains near the party, taking up a defensive position in the narrows between a few of the larger spires. "I think it would be best if we remain roughly where we are. These spires will impede the dragon's movement pretty handily and provide a place he can't easily swoop down on and attack." Gesturing to the cluster of spires near where the bison were killed, he motions for Garand and Theoden to take up positions in front of the rest of the group.
I'm thinking that Garand and I can be at K10/L9 with Theoden, Akulayok and Pavel roughly in front of us. Pavel would be enlarged in K11/K12/L11/L12 and Theoden can be in roughly M8 and Akulayok in M10. Where is Stag-Spirit, by the way? Did he get left in the village?

![]() |

Stag Spirit is indeed still at the village. He'd be pretty useless against a flying dragon. In a metagame sense, he'd be useful to absorb some attacks, but I already kind of let one animal companion die, and I don't want to push it and risk becoming an ex-cleric. :)

Theoden Orrick |

"Very well, my stoic friend. And don't forget my gift of flying, good Daeron. I have been quite looking forward to it," he reminds the wizard, highly anticipating such an event. "Oh wait! I nearly forgot. I've been blessed with a bit of magic myself... of a divine nature, you see."
Theoden will cast Magic Weapon upon his sword during Round 2. Because it don't last long. Only for 1 minute.
So I am still gonna be flying, right? Enlarged as well? Just wanna be absolutely clear.

Daeron Lareththor |

Strictly speaking you've been able to fly for the last 10 minutes, so yes you can fly. :) Manu is working on the enlarging thing. Edit: Now with IC stuff. And to answer your follow up question, you've got about 4 minutes left.
Amused and slightly perplexed, Daeron says, "Your gift of flying, friend Theoden, has been yours for nearly ten minutes now. I've been rather curious as to why you've not used it."

The Monolith Trap - Part 2: The Dragon Returns
Round 1 - The Dragon Hunters
For a few seconds, the vibration increases and the group sets in a defensive position, their eyes staring at the floor, wishing they could place a sword between their feet and the ground...
They finish their preparation, and the air crackles with the eldritch energy dancing around their mortal forms.
Round 1 - Vegsundvaag, the Icy Scourge of Iqaluit
After a heavy pause in the burrowing sound, the ice in front of you explodes, sending shards in all direction, and the Vegsundvaag, the white dragon ruling on these lands spring from the ground. Its magnificent shape rises, scales glistening in the sun, both white and silver, as its muscular body extends and flaps its wings, lifting the snow from the ground and almost blinding you in the process.
Before you know it, it has risen 20 feet in the air. You can make its distinctive crown of horns, rising from its head directly back. Its black eyes cut through you, seemingly reading your every move. The dragon snarls in pleasure, revealing ivory teeth like swords. A ball forms at the base of its snakey neck and rises fast. The eyes of the dragon narrow in lustful passion as he pulls its lips and pulls back his jaw.
Then everything around you turns to white, cold and despair...

Gritting his teeth against the cold, Daeron clears his mind of distractions and focuses on how to continue. Pavel is in a good position to strike, but Theoden is less so. Best to rectify that. Shaking the accumulated frost from his body, Daeron gestures dramatically at Theoden, chanting in Draconic. "Prepare to fly, my friend!" With a sudden snap, Theoden seems to blur as he rushes through the air towards the dragon.
Manulani, being more nimble, manages to dodge the worse of the breath by ducking behind his master. "You ok boss?" Without further prompting, Manu touches Daeron and the elf's outline begins to look hazy.
Cast telekinetic charge on Theoden and have him reposition over the party and then into squares J13/J14/K13/14. He should be level with the dragon. Protection from cold is at 56 for me.
Pavel calls upon the power of Kazuko no Hogo to grant himself the ability to walk on air and proceeds toward the dragon.
Invoking air walk, assuming the sword agrees that we're using it toward the right aims. I believe it acts independently on my turn- so I may be able to walk up to the dragon in the air and hit it, right?
The grim ranger walks on the air as if going uphill, to just the point where he can reach the dragon. Walking to KL12-13 so that my reach and the dragon's overlaps and I'm going about ten feet up- it says under air walk that I go half my speed uphill, and I've already advanced five feet, so I'm at a 10 foot elevation. The question I have is- do I have enough clearance to swat the dragon with my sword?

Daeron Lareththor |

FYI, by my count you should be getting 1 more attack without the smite evil. 1 free swing from Telekinetic charge and then the two you just made. :)

Akulayok |

If Théoden uses an immediate action to make a melee attack with Telekinetic Charge, he won't be able to use his Smite Evil in his own round because he won't have a Swift Action the round he attacks if he uses an Immediate action during the Telekinetic Charge on Daeron's action. Better that he use his Smite Evil during his round.
Is Théoden flying? Telekinetic Charge does not suspend Théoden in the air. Celestial will have to determine if Théoden's overall reach to 20 feet is enough to hit the dragon or if 20 feet in the air means just out of reach.

Daeron Lareththor |

Ah right, I didn't see the immediate action clause. Ignore me. :) He also has a few minutes of fly leftover and it's a DC 15 to hover. If I'm doing my math right, he should get a +5 bonus on the skill (+3 for 1/2 caster level +4 good maneuverability -2 large) . Did some quick math, the max reach of my spell is 40 feet and I put him 20 feet away on the grid at the farthest point. Given that, I get the maximum height can be sqrt(1200) or ~35 feet. Assuming 15 feet of height, that should still put his feet 20 feet into the air.
Edit: Added content and changed order of things a bit.
