Daeron Lareththor |
Frowning irritably towards the door, Daeron shakes his head and recalls the servant. "Unfortunately that didn't work as I hoped it would. I could inspect the trap myself having given myself the ability to fly and thus prevent any damage if I fall into the pit. Otherwise I'll need to take some time to think through what magic I have handily available. Any other suggestions while I consider my options?"
Akulayok |
"I will climb along mountainside to door."
Akulayok goes to an area of the cliff outside the area of the pit. He will look for handholds and climb sideways to the door. If that does not work, he will look for something to tie a rope to above the door and use a rope to climb sideways and hang in front of the door to open it.
Climb1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
Akulayok's progress is slow, but his footing is steady as he crabs sideways along the wall. Reaching the door, he can make a loose stone that, once pressed, opens the door.
The trap lays still in front of it, preventing access.
Beyond the door, Akulayok can make a natural tunnel winding upward, inside the cliff's wall.
Daeron Lareththor |
Watching as first Akulayok and then Pavel climb across the narrow ledge, Daeron shrugs and takes a moment to chant in draconic. A sudden weave of ethereal chain links settles on his form as he finishes his invocation. "Servant, follow along this climb if you are able." Nodding in satisfaction, he follows the others, carefully picking his way along the path that Pavel had laid out.
Cast Mage Armor on himself.
Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 12 Hopefully the rope helps... worst case scenario I have Feather Fall...
Theoden Orrick |
As Pavel and Daeron make their way up the rope, Theoden looks up at the climb. "Oh dear, this could prove challenging. But who says I don't love a challenge! Not I!" Theoden exclaims excitedly as he grabs the rope and attempts to climb it.
Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
Garand's foot slips and he looses hold of the rocky wall, sliding to the floor. As his weight connects, a loud spring is heard and the floor collapses under him. He falls towards the bottom of a great pit when the rope catches him, leaving him dangling.
With some effort, he is pulled back to the entrance of the tunnel, and you can make your way.
The tunnel is slightly icy. It climbs steadily for about a hundred feet, before opening to a vast cave. At this point, the tunnel becomes an icy ledge. To your right, an ice wall climbs up vertically for about 50 feet. To your left, it drops the same way for about 60 feet into a pond filled with muddy sludge. The ledge is not straight and very icy. It remains exposed that way for about 80 feet.
At the end of the ledge, you can make a small door.
Daeron Lareththor |
Eyes still glowing with a silvery light, Daeron studies the ceiling for a moment, hoping to gather some insight into the unusual holes dotting the surface. Study done, Daeron recovers the Claws of the Ice bear from his pack, fitting them on to assist in holding on to the wall as he makes his way across the ice.

Daeron Lareththor |
His survey complete, Daeron shakes his head and replies to the hunter in a whisper, "I don't much care for it either, Akulayok. The holes seem to be mere structural weakness in the rock and ice above us. Nothing sinister about them either. I've an idea, give me a moment. I might be able to draw out an ambusher, but I'm unsure it would be effective against intelligent foes. Should I continue?"
Assuming there are no objections...
Chanting evenly and clearly, Daeron first summons a vaguely humanoid shape, glowing faintly in the darkness. As it begins to walk along the ledge, Daeron also generates the illusionary sounds of footsteps, pacing the glowing humanoid form. [i]Perhaps that will confuse an ambusher into concluding
Casting first dancing lights and then ghost sound to mimic the above effects.
Daeron Lareththor |
Frowning in vexation, Daeron shrugs and turns to his companions, "That was all I have for the moment. I suppose we'll just have to proceed carefully across. Would someone else care to take the lead? Unless anyone else has an idea?"
Can the Claws of the Ice Bear help with this acrobatics? Edit: Reviewing what they do, it seems they can help. So I'll go ahead and keep them on and follow along behind someone more suited to being hit. :)
Acrobatics with Claws of the Ice Bear: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 2 = 13
Acrobatics with Claws of the Ice Bear: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 2 = 18
Theoden Orrick |
Theoden will place the claws upon his own hands and follow Pavel along the ledge.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
As he finds this slow walk tedious and boring, coupled with the fact he finds himself completely confident in his ability to cross such a ledge, Theoden starts to daydream about fantastic battles on the grandest of scales before noticing Pavel getting smaller and smaller extremely quickly.
I have absolutely no idea how deep this fall is but if it's really deep, then... bye-bye. :)
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
In a daring attempt, Akulayok jumps past Pavel, belly first on the treacherous ledge he's just managed to clear. Sliding down along the wall, his left claw catches the hem of Theoden's cloak as he digs desperately in the icy ledge with his right.
The ice shrieks and the claok creaks as they suffer under the weight of the two warriors, but after a second, it stops, leaving Theoden dangling at the end of his cloak, while Akulayok lay sprawled and arms overextended.
Akulayok can try pulling Theoden back with a Str check DC 15, but he risks gravely injuring himself if he fails. Anyone can come and lend a hand, but I need a DC 10 acrobatics to get to them.
Akulayok |
Akulayok calls outs through a grit-tooth grimace, "I have him...I can't hold him long. Grab on shiny man, so I can use both hands."
Akulayok will wait for Théoden to grab onto him, he will take Pavel's hands using his legs and hands to pull Théoden up.
Str Check hopefully with more help1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Great. I hope Daeron has a feather fall ready.
Daeron Lareththor |
Jaw dropping open as he sees Theoden's footing slip, Daeron drops his claws to the ground hurriedly to free his hands for casting. Gesturing as he does so, he calls to Manulani urgently, "Help stabilize them, quickly!" Readying himself in case they fall, Daeron prepares to intervene with a spell. Running over his options mentally in an instant, Daeron curses quietly under his breath in Elven. Retrieving a hawk's wing feather from his component pouch, he chants quietly while weaving a complex pattern with the feather. His hands now glowing white, he waits for a moment for Manulani to get into position.
Striking a faux-heroic pose, the impish elemental puffs out his chest and says, "No problem boss! Manu the Mighty to the rescue!" With a burst of speed, he flies down and assists Akulayok by tugging on Theoden's arms. As he touches Theoden, Daeron barks the invoking work and the glow on his hands winks out. Ephemeral wings flap for a moment on Theoden's back before fading from view. "Theoden! You can fly, keep a tight hold on Akulayok!"
Acrobatics to stay standing for Daeron: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Strength check for Manulani: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
No feather fall prepared sadly. Theoden flying should help a bit and hopefully Pavel can keep Akulayok from slipping.
Theoden Orrick |
"It appears...," Theoden looks down to see where his destination of impending death awaits him, "that I have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle, wouldn't you say?" Complying with the Erutaki warrior's direction, Theoden attempts to grab onto him.
No idea what to roll for that.
Garand Stone-of-the-Moon |
Garand, please roll an acrobatics to get there, then a strength check.
Ah, I did not envision the scene correctly. Making an Acrobatics check to get there would probably only make the situation worse, so Garand will not go out on the ledge and turn this into a Benny Hill sketch... Instead he'll cast guidance on anyone he can reach from where he is, giving them a +1 to their next skill check, save, etc.

LOL! That's greatness! Benny Hill! Oh man, I couldn't have described it any better.
As he's unable to get a true grip and make his way up, Theoden feels the Erutaki's grip slipping. "Uh-oh." Then noticing Manu fly next to him and give him a tap on the shoulder, Theoden grins as Daeron informs him he's now able to fly. "Fantastic! I love this part." He immediately takes flight, rising back to safety. "Alright, folks! Anything I can do to help speed this process along? No sense in you all slipping and falling as well, you know."
Daeron Lareththor |
And thus with the expenditure of a level 3 spell slot, the formidable icy path is defeated by our intrepid heroes! :P
Guffawing quietly at Theoden's pageantry, Daeron retrieves his Claws and makes his way to the door. Manulani preens and makes a show of 'strutting' in air as he returns to his wizard's side. "I don't know what you lot would do without me! Manu the Magnificent saves the day yet again..." He continues in this manner for a time before growing bored with it and subsiding into silence.
Rolling his eyes, Daeron ignores his companion and studies the door, "Is it stuck? Also, Theoden, I do believe Akulayok just called you fat." Grinning mischieviously, Daeron notes Akulayok's caution and focuses for a moment before chanting in draconic. A soft glow envelops his eyes as he studies the door.
Since we're being cautious, cast detect magic.
Perception to look over the door too: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33 Edit: Pretty sure that finds just about everything.

Theoden Orrick |
Théoden looks perplexed at the Erutaki's words. "Heavy? Me?" Théoden places his hands upon his stomach, testing out said theory. After a moment or two, "Hm. By jove I believe that perhaps you may be right, my life saving ally - Thank you for that, by the way. You know, as a matter of fact," he turns to the others, "thank you ALL for saving me from certain death," he says as he bows in appreciation. Then turning back to Akulayok, "Anyway, I daresay I think I could stand to lose a pound or two. You know, I fault those months of sitting around in camp doing nothing; that truly does not bode well for one's physique," he states as a matter of fact.
Pavel |
Pavel snorts, jerking a thumb between the two elven blooded men.
"Anybody's heavy compared to these two. Now- we buh'bustin' this thing down?", Pavel says, gesturing to the stone door, flexing his shoulders in preparation for some more destruction of property.
