Reknar listens to the others as they exchange valid points - "My vote goes for both - we should maintaing Nefertiti and the eagle up in the air. It is too much of an advantage to pass up. But we need the boats - they give us options, and I see no other efficient way of getting out of there, if we plan on bringing anyone along when we return" - he adds.

As Reknar offers his take on the situation, Jacinth slaps her forehead. "Of course! Hedge our bets as it were and take both routes. Not to mention having Nef in the sky means she should, in theory, be more likely to spot anything or anything bearing down on the longboats. And she can still ferry someone with her if need be," she nods.

Oren nodded. "Reknar has it. I'll man one of the longboats. If Nef sees anything out of sorts, she can support us from the air. I think we need the boats as Jacinth's friends will need a way off the island."

Rata Fenn chimes in, "Aye, I think having being our eyes in the sky is a good plan. As fer mannin' the lifeboat, I think mebbe I should do that instead." He slaps the Kamu tribesman on the shoulder. "We've seen how potent yer fire magic is. I'd much rather have ye ready ta let loose yer magic, than jes stretchin' yer shoulders out."

He then takes his spyglass and trains it on the approaching island. "Captain, ye said the whale sank yer previous ship when ye approached from the west side? I have to agree trying a different approach be fer the best. Looks like the north side be th' best bet."

He turns to face the elf captain, a look of intensity on his face as he studies her features. "I suppose the next question be how close ta bring the Rita in? Too close risks the Whale showing up yet too far leaves th' longboat on her own."

"I can assist with the longboats" - Reknar comments also - "As for bringing the Rita closer, it is a matter of risking it?" - he shrugs.

"The north side it is," Nef says, echoing the consensus. "And yes, I think that it is a matter of risking the Rita if we bring her in too close. There've been two shipwrecks off this island -- one connected to the whale, and the other one..." Nef takes a deep breath, "...well, let's just say that a whale would have had a good reason to take it out."

Nef looks out at the water.

Whale, have you been listening? I believe in you, but have no idea if you'll return the favor.

Nef turns to Jacinth. "Kaiku, how far out from the island was the Dulcimer when the whale came?"

Inactive

"Quite close to the shore...certainly no more than a quarter of a mile out, if I remember correctly," Jacinth sighs. "So we would need to keep the ship further out than that at the very least. Perhaps the whale, if it still lurks in these waters, would not be as likely to take notice of the longboats..." she offers, though her tone is dubious.

PAST -- 1830 Hours, Day Six

Nefertiti shimmies out to the bowsprit, hanging on. "Whale, I'm here." She waits a while, settling in, feeling the spray in her face. She looks out at the ever changing sea, letting the silence stretch out. It's their last night together before Dolentla, and she doesn't want to rush this moment. She realizes that she feels a connection to this deep god, likely as ancient as her own, and just as endangered.

In her mind, Whale has Oren's face. Solid, big, friendly, protecting. She smiles at this fancy, for doesn't every god present an infinity of faces to his worshippers? Still it comforts her to imagine Whale as a big brother who like Oren, could adopt a penniless foreigner into his family and his heart. As she considers this, the tides calm, as if the whole sea is holding its breath to listen.

Story to Tohorara, the Whale, Day Six -- Lesson of the Hags

It was the sixth day of Eagle's journey with the princess Kalena to the Haunted Isle, and one of the ship's crew called out that they had seen wreckage. Eagle flew out to investigate, with his clever friend the Weasel on his shoulder. What they saw was a raft, with a tattered sail rigged like a shroud to shade three bodies from the hot beating noon sun. Eagle's sharp eyes saw that the bodies moved slightly beneath the sail -- could there be survivors here, in need of rescue?

Eagle and Weasel called out to the people beneath the sail, but not an answer was made. Weasel said, "There is something wrong here. Swoop lower, and I will snatch the shroud." Eagle watched in wonder as his friend somersaulted through the air, yelling, "Catch me!"

Heart in his mouth, Eagle caught his friend mid-air, the Weasel hanging upside down from his claws. The pair flew towards the sail, Weasel snatching it up triumphantly. And then they saw what the shroud had hidden and wished they hadn't. Three emaciated figures awaited them, each so horrible that the pair of friends felt a wave of crippling nausea ripple over them, robbing them of their strength. "No!" Eagle cried, screeching fiercely as he flew overhead. Eagle's war cry alerted the ship to the danger, and was itself so terrible that the three emaciated horrors found themselves frozen in place.

The call of Eagle's voice awoke Whale from his deep slumbers. He rose from the sea, and seeing the horrors upon the raft, opened a sea shell that he had once received from Pele in thanks for her freedom. From the shell came a rain of fire that poured down upon the monsters, wounding them deeply.

"What are those things?" whispered Eagle.

"They are Hags! They can get into your mind and sap your will if you look at them. Get us out of here!" cried the wise Weasel.

But at that moment, one of the Hags reached the mind of Eagle. Eagle saw all those that he'd ever loved who had left him. His children in Osirion, who turned their backs upon him after he'd saved them from the desert. His father Osiris, who returned to the land of the dead. His new love Makani, who said she would be his family no longer. His heart heavy, he wanted nothing more than to plunge into the deep ocean and disappear forever.

But then he heard the beautiful song of his friend the Whale, and Eagle remembered that he had friends who needed him, including the patient Weasel who hung so trustingly from his claws. Enraged at what the hags had almost done to him, he flew straight at them in his rage.

"Eagle, what are you doing?" Weasel cried. "We need to flee, not go straight at them once again!"

But Eagle would not hear him. He raced forward so close that Whale dared not open Pele's shell again to rain fire upon the hags. Eagle called out with his terrible war cry, stunning only two of the hags. The third used the delay caused by him to escape, diving into the sea.

It was only afterwards that Eagle realized his mistake. In his desire for personal vengeance, he had failed to listen to wise counsel, and had prevented his friend Whale from clearing an abomination from his ocean.

When he flew back to Whale, with Weasel once again on his shoulder, he was full of sorrow. The pair watched as Whale quietly folded Pele's shell once again. "Once again, I come to you not as a valiant hero, but a creature who has made one mistake after another. It is because of me there is an abomination loose in your waters still."

To his surprise, Whale laughed at him. "So we lost a Hag. These islands don't need paragons! They need brave warriors who will dare to try new things, make mistakes, and learn. Eagle, hold up your head. You are going to the Haunted Isle with the bravest and best companions anyone can wish for. Listen to their counsel, but also listen to your own brave heart and fly high." Whale spouted. "Then come back to me and share your stories. I'll be here waiting."

After Whale dove back into the waters, Weasel finally broke his silence. "I don't hold much with gods. I'm a simple beast, who holds on to what I can see and touch."

Eagle grinned. "I need friends more than followers. Besides, you can see and touch me. So hold on!" And with wind streaming in their faces, the two friends flew back to their ship and the adventure that awaited them on the Haunted Isle.

Nef contemplates her story to Whale of the previous day. Whale has been listening to her stories -- she knows this deep in her heart. But would this help them when it came time to deal with his mad child? If only Whale had seen fit to give her a sign.

Taking a deep breath, she says, "The longboats are replaceable. The Rita is not. If the longboats get capsized, we can swim in and we can fall back on Wedjat as an option to get back to our ship."

Turning her steady gaze to the rest of them, she says, "Are we ready?"

Nefertiti smiles at Reknar's bravado.

Then she eyes the air crystals that Oren holds nervously in his left hand. She sighs. "You might as well put those away, Opu. Like me, you're able to breathe water for the next two hours. Remember? Leave your hands free for other things."

"It seems we are as prepared as we can be," Jacinth nods. "I will position the Rita further out than I did with the Dulcimer, though not so far that we exhaust ourselves rowing to shore. At least half a mile out, depending on how negotiable the northern shore is and preferably no further than perhaps three-quarters of a mile."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Sensing the source of his anxiety, so allied with her own, Nefertiti pulls Oren aside and put an arm around him, whispering, "No time to be scared, Opu. Mission's afoot."

"Whatever happens now," she says firmly, "we'll face it together."

The orders given to the Tulitan warriors to hold the Rita stationed a half mile away from the north shore of the island so as to avoid any attacks from the Whale, Jacinth boards the longboat along with 'Lani, Aikane, Oren, Reknar and Rata Fenn, the latter manning the oars. Nefertiti and Wedjat take to the skies to watch over the boat's passage.

Under the swift, sure strokes by Rata Fenn the distance from the Rita and the islands shores disappears rapidly. The whole trip takes about 15 minutes but for whatever reason it seems longer. The closer you get to the shore, you can see the distance to the ocean bottom is shrinking rapidly from 5 fathoms down to less than 3. A shallow approach to be sure.

As the shore comes into view, a welcome sandy beach is now in sight, but before you can reach it the water ripples as if a mighty earthquake opened the ground beneath your tiny longboat. A huge whale hurtles towards you at breakneck speed, almost literally parting the sea in two as it churns through the open water. The creature seems intent on crashing headlong into your boat! It is easy to see the whale is easily large enough to smash the boat into so much driftwood

As Nefertiti watches from the sky, she sees the Whale bearing down on the longboat...yet she also sees something else in her minds eye...

Nefertiti:
It seems as if you have known Whale all of your life, yet as you see the Whale you suddenly realize this is not the Whale, not the one you have known what seems to have been all of your life, but a dark shadow of His true self. As your heart quails at the dark corruption of the Spirit and at the thought your friends being slaughtered by the spirit you propitiated, you sense in your heart a brief spark of regret mixed with determination from the spirit of Whale...along with a plea..."SAVE ME...!"

The rest of you have no time to react as the Whale charges straight towards you...yet as it seems it cannot avoid your boat it leaps out of the water bare feet from you, spasming as if under a strange contortion as it leaps into the air and crashes down right next to your longboat! The massive impact of the Whale easily capsizes your boat and you soon find yourselves in the shallow depths struggling to avoid being dragged underwater. The Kraken is using a bit of GM Fiat here, but the Whale could not have failed the Capsize check.

As you all break the surface of the water, coughing up the sea water you involuntarily swallowed, you all spy the Whale swimming away soon vanishing under the surface as if it had never existed., the longboat drifting a short distance away. Ahead of you the pristine beach awaits you. The longboat is currently capsized, yet undamaged. You could turn it right side up and pull it ashore without any difficulty. The shore is only 250 feet away and the water is only about 10 feet deep here.

Time Check: 1015 hours, Day 7.

Reknar takes note of Oren's nervous posture, but makes no comment, still not completely at ease with his new companions.

On the longboat:

"I guess that's that then - time to take care of business" - he comments to the others - "Remember what I said earlier - fight as a group, know your positions and your role, and we'll get this done and over with in no time"

The man seems about to add something else, when the leviathan makes short work of them and the longboat, all in one - "What the..!" - Reknar roars, spitting water and sand - "That is one pis$#% off beast, if I ever saw one - guess Nefertiti has been doing something right, because it didn't simply thrash us - only the boat?" - he wonders aloud, going for the raft, and beginning to pull it along.

"Argh, Whale is angry! Let's get our longboat and get to shore ASAP.". At least Nef's spell made it possible for Oren to breathe under the water while he tried to help pull the capsized boat to shore.

Nef has always been a woman that plans.

Having known about Whale since before they'd left for Dolentla, she'd formulated a plan for something she would try if they spotted the creature. In her head, all the parts of that plan had seemed so clear: the waterbreathing spell, so she could cast underwater; the touch of the sea potion; the dive from on high while wearing boots of the cat; and finally, the calm emotions, which would have removed the ability to complete an act of violence. And then should would have talked to Whale and reminded him of who he was.

She'd always known that there was a good chance that the plan would fail. What she had neither expected nor planned for was that she'd freeze at the critical moment. Nef freezes the moment she senses the battle going on inside the lost, mad whale. The malevolence of the dark spirit possessing the whale overwhelms her. And then she feels him -- the lost whale -- not Tohorara, but one of his many children -- struggling, fighting against the compulsion that drove him.

She hears, clear as day, the voice of the lost whale, screaming, SAVE ME!

Don't hurt my friends! She calls back to the voice in her head. I will save you. I promise.

She watches, unable to stop him, and sick with dread, as the whale bears down upon her friends and then turns at the last minute, fighting his compulsion to destroy the boat, merely capsizing it. The longboat should have been smashed to pieces, but there it floated, intact and upside down.

Shaking, pale, she feels her volition return to her body. She calls out to her friends, counting the spluttering figures as each popped out of the water one by one. "Are you alright?"

As Nef swoops low to check on the team, she trembles all over. You froze up at the critical moment, and let that whale hit your team. She feels a sickening mix of emotions -- shame, fear, and grim determination.

I am going to get that dark spirit before he gets US.

"Ack...I think I'm okay," Oren yells as his head bobs above and below the surface. "Do you think Wedjat is strong enough to grab a rope and tow the boat to shore," Oren yells up to his friend, not quite feeling up to a swim with a boat in tow.

Rata Fenn peers up at the sky where Wedjat and Nefertit fly above the group circling and gives a thumbs up signal. "We be OK! Glad th' Whale decided not ta stick arond!" He swims effortlessly over to where Jacinth is treading water and leans forward to whisper in her ear, "Are you OK? I don't want ta say nothin' in front of the others but ye need ta be strong 'ere. Don't let this phase ye out." He gives her a reassuring smile before adding "I believe in ye!"

Swimming over to the overturned longboat he grasps one side of it and motions to the others, "Hey, I need a hand wit' this!" As Reknar helps him out, he nods in thanks.

Though spluttering a bit, Jacinth bobs to the surface and easily begins treading water. "Gah! Is everyone okay?" she looks around, counting heads, satisfied that everyone seems to be accounted for. "Maybe...maybe you are right...that creature could have easily crushed us all," she shakily responds to Reknar, watching as he moves to catch the longboat.

As Rata swims close to her, she takes a deep breath and nods in response to his words of encouragement. "Y-yes, I am fine. And you are right, I must be strong. We all must be strong." When he smiles at her, she feels a pang of guilt. Since the dream she had on the night of their small drinking party, she had not really spoken to Rata much beyond the necessities of keeping the Rita afloat and moving towards Dolentla. Initially, she had told herself that her mind was simply on other matters but that was really only partially true. But now, she was forced to admit to herself that she had been avoiding him, at least subconsciously. Her dream of the mayfly lingered, a reminder of the futility of caring for one that was not elven.

Or was it? Did it have to be futile?

I have spent too much time with Nef...

But he believes in you. Try believing in him, beyond his capability as a sailor and a fighter.

She smiles back. "Thank you, Rata. That...that means a great deal!" She shifts her gaze towards the others as they pull themselves together and begin making for the shore. "Now let us go, before that Whale changes its mind and comes back for another round!"

Though it looks as if Reknar and Rata can easily manage the longboat between the two of them, Jacinth swims over and lends her assistance as well. "The more of us pulling, the easier and less exhausting it will be for everyone." Looking skyward at Nef and Wedjat, Jacinth offers the priestess a wave to show that she is okay.

Oren follows Jacinth. "Get me in the boat, so I can slow them down! If they get upon us too quickly, we're all done for!"

Rata Fenn

Rata Fenn wastes no time grabbing one side of the longboat and giving a heave to right the longboat. He struggles momentarily, veins nearly bursting from the effort before righting the boat with a final heave. STR Check DC 15 to right the boat: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15

Jacinth and Oren manage to clamber into the longboat without much trouble. J Dex check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21; O Dex check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

The boat is now right side up. Those who want to climb in need to give me a DC 10 DEX check.

Round 1: Aikane, 'Lani, Reknar, Wedjat, Rata Fenn, Jacinth, Nefertiti, Oren, ???.

Reknar weighs the situation as his companions flip, and climb upon the longboat - "I'll hold them off" - he informs the others, and with a flick of his wrist, retrieves the wand from its sheath, maintaining his position between the incoming attackers and the vessel.

After a curse about bringing his heavier armor, he invokes the power contained in the slender cedar wood piece, willing a protective shield into existence, while his legs pump furiously to keep him afloat - "Give them hell! It's time to go fishing!" - he roars.

Swim: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

Zapping the wand of Shield. Moving 5' towards interposing himself as much as possible between the incoming humanoids, and the longboat.

Ke' grinned at Nef as he took his pipe out and slapped where he had a bomb stowed on his harness.

"Ready!" He said.

Upon being thrown out of the boat, Ke' quickly found his equilibrium and grabbed the boat's painter to tow it towards shore.
Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

When the attack came, he bared his sharpened teeth and swum up to try to reboard the boat.

Dex vs DC10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Fail. But flopped at the gunwale uselessly.

Botting Aikane...

Aikane looks over at the approaching creatures and sighs softly to himself even while flailing about in the water before managing to swim over to the longboat and climbing into it. Swim DC 10: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 fail, quarter speed, DEX Check DC 10: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

JAcinth, Oren, Aikane are in the longboat. 'Lani, Rata fenn and Reknar are next to it and Nef/Wedjat are airborne.

The feral humanoids continue moving towards you rapidly, taking advantage of the shallowness of the water to gain extra ground on you...They are now 140' away from the longboat.

Round 2_____

Dex vs DC10: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 Success! He manages to flop into the boat.

Looking at the oncoming enemy, he is unhappy that the water would prevent splash explosions. He waive vigorously at Oren for a fireball.

Round 2

"Do you think your fireballs will do anything to them while in the water?!" - Reknar shouts - "If you do, by all means man, boil them where they stand!"

Reaching behind his back, he retrieves what seems to be some sort of two-handed pick, but with a chisel-like blade instead of a point, swinging it for good measure - "This should do the trick!" - he sputters, then again turns to the others - "Rata, get the hell up on that raft, and show us what you can do with those daggers of yours, or was that all talk back at The Rita?" - he roars.

"Captain! If you don't mind me saying it, how about them arrows? Think it'll take long to start shooting?" - he adds - "Hit them as hard as you can before they reach us. Hurt them enough, and maybe they'll just double back!"

Round 2

Yes, yes, what are you waiting for!? Blast them if it will work!" Jacinth yells as she draws her longbow and takes aim at one of the approaching creatures before firing.

Attack (Longbow): 1d20 + 8 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 3 - 2 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 3 = 12

-2 attack penalty since they're still beyond the range increment of her longbow and +3 to attack/damage from Nef's bardic performance; I'm not sure if they're surface swimming or diving under the water as they approach so I've not accounted for any penalties for shooting through the water yet.

Round 2

"By Horus, they're fast in the water!" She glances back at her team, so vulnerable in the water. It's not their environment. Whereas these creatures seemed completely unhampered.

No, don't think that way. You have the best team out there. They're tough. All they need is an edge, and you can give them that.

"We can do this! Hit them with everything you have, I'll try to hold them off!"

Nef guides Wedjat with her knees to circle over the beastmen. She readies the an action to daze as Wedjat passes directly overhead. His path when it ends should leave room for Oren to fireball.

As Wedjat passes over their heads, she channels.

He enjoys swooping over the heads of the beastmen, but it would be more fun if Nef actually allowed him to shred them...

Oren rises to his feet in the boat. He takes his time, waiting a few seconds for Nef to clear the scene, while he touches his nose, a motion that the others might have never noticed before. He grimaces..." Give me just a second!".

The next round, he throws a fireball at the biggest grouping of the swimmers, that Nef has not affected with her Dazing ability. The strange thing is, however, that this time, instead of fire, the water crackles with electricity!

As 'Lani and Rata Fenn clamber into the longboat, Reknar prepares for the feral creatures charge. Jacinth's arrow strikes one of the beastmen in its shoulder producing a shriek of pain from it, and its blood stains the crystal clear water a reddish brown.

Nefertiti guides her eagle to fly lower for a pass over the beastmen and looses her deities power against them. While they do all flinch in pain, she notices as her emanation washes over them, their eyes glaze over briefly before they all shake off the effects of her deities power, glancing up at the soaring eagle with looks of rage on their bestial faces. They are immune to the dazing effect, though they do take damage from the channel.

While they are distracted by the flying priestess, Orens electrical blast engulfs all three of the beastmen. Two of them manage to twist aside avoiding the brunt of the spell, but none of them look in very good shape.

Despite this, they continue to advance on your position...They are now 80' away from you.

Round 3

As Wedjat and Nef head in the other direction, Oren decides to save his last fireball. He casts another spell, this one, causing fiery rocks to fall all upon heads of the swimmers

I don't have the book with the spell Rain of Pumice in it with me at the office. Does anyone have a book handy and can give me the specifics? If not, I'll get to it tonight. I think it does 2d6 damage and affects the terrain in some way.

Nef watches the Rain of Pumice fall down, impressed.

"Woo hoo!" she shouts, as the rocks fall down.

Rain of Pumice Spell:

Rain of Pumice
School evocation; Level Druid 2, Sorcerer/Wizard 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a fist-sized chunk of pumice from a
volcano)
Range Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area cylinder (20-ft. radius, 40 ft. high)
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw Reflex partial (see text);
Spell Resistance Yes

Magical glass and porous stones, spit from a volcano’s
heart, rain down upon casting this spell, dealing 2d6
points of bludgeoning damage to every creature in the
area. This damage only occurs once, when the spell is cast.
The pumice liquefies upon contact with the ground and
becomes a sticky morass of fast-drying concrete. The entire
area is treated as difficult terrain. Any creature in the area
that does not move or takes only a 5 ft. step during its turn
must make a Reflex save or they are stuck to the concrete.
Creatures trapped in this manner cannot move and take
a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity.
Huge and larger creatures as well as flying creatures cannot
be stuck to the concrete.

Creatures stuck to concrete can break free by making a
DC 17 Strength check or by dealing 15 points of damage to
the concrete with a bludgeoning weapon. Creatures striking
at the concrete do not need to make an attack roll. Hitting
the concrete is automatic, after which the creature that hit
makes a damage roll to see how much damage he dealt to
the concrete. The concrete dissolves into water when the
spell expires, and all stuck creatures are freed.

Tien Female Mutagenic Mauler 7 | HP 66/66 | AC (26)23/15/21| F+8(+11),R+8(+11),W+4(+7)(+2 v. , compulsion and emotions) | Init.+2, Perc.+11 | CMB +2 (+14 Bull Rush)(+13 Sunder); CMD 24 (26 v Bull Rush)(25 v Sunder)| while under effects of mutagen, gain +10 to speed, +2 to damage and low light vision.

Much obliged, ma'am!

Damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 2 = 7

DC 17 Reflex save for half. And to be honest, I'm not sure what terrain effect it will have in water...probably none.

Seriously, I mean it...:

H#2 Reflex DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 full; HP 9/34

As Nefertiti calls upon her deities powers again, she sees the beast men unaffected by the dazing aura again...but not from the other damaging effects. Two of the beast men fall into the water, un-moving and drifting in the waves that are crashing against the shore. The third one presses on, despite being pelted full force by the volcanic glass and porous stones. As the stones strike the water, the waves immediately wash the concrete away. Since the spell is cast in water, the concrete is immediately washed away.

Round 3: 'Lani, Reknar, Rata Fenn, Jacinth, Nefertiti, Wedjat, Oren, Aikane, ???.
