My merc troop might wanna look into this, I'll see what Capt Erina has to say about us doing a contract with this station...

Halar sips at her drink for a minute, thinking. 600 credits a shift? There has to be a catch somewhere. But, with that kind of salary...if she's frugal...she could save up enough to travel for a time as just a tourist. A nice vacation from lifting boxes and smacking heads together.

<query> "Who is in charge of hiring security? This job sounds...interesting"

"You'd best try your luck with the station's barracks," the bartender pulls up a data pad and pings a location on a map of the Ursa. "Take a right past the giant statue of I-have-no-idea-what-that's-supposed-to-be, go straight until you hit Tidurnk's Barbecue. The barracks are directly to the left of the restaurant."

Will everyone be ready to throw down within the next few days?

I am but I am making a few character adjustments. Keeping the pistol but going for submachine gun specialization later on (going to pick up Rain of Bullets via my 4th level unique specialization). Since this is Eclipse a Pistol doesn't cut it, thinking of getting a Geth Submachine at level 7-9 or perhaps a bloodpack punisher repainted Eclipse style...

Mallene finishes her wine and starts the hunt for her commanding officer...

Enira should be ready to go as is.

Enira nods, and notes the location on her omnitool, which should have, and did, download the map of the station automatically. "Thank you." She pays up her tab and turns to go. "I need to find a place to live, might as well find a job to pay for it first. Might get a discount... Nice to meet you all."

Secundus is ready to go :)
Similarly to Enira, Secundus saves the location on his omnitool.
"Nice to meet you to. And from the looks of it, it most likely isn't the last time we meet."

When Enira and Mallene had left, Secundus ordered another drink and spoke to the bartender. "No use in all of us rushing there at the same time, they might lower their pay with so many eager new recruits."

@Mallene: You exit the bar and return to where you last saw your commanding officer, presumably back aboard on the Eclipse ship that docked at the station.

@Enira: You follow the quarian's directions and find yourself standing in front of a building with the Ursa's symbol hanging above the building. Uniformed guards in standard combat armor stand outside the front entrance, the only visible entrance into a busy and bustling working space.

An asari at the reception desk flicks through a datapad with a bored expression on her face.

@Secundus: The bartender laughs. "The words 'eager new recruits' aren't something that they see too often. Station life is peaceful, and there aren't too many people that want to defy the Administrators."

"I'll be 'eager' if the pay is good", Secundus said jokingly and then continued in a slightly more serious tone. "But I heard about the Administrators. Seems you don't want to be on their bad side. You say there aren't too many that want to defy them, but that means there are some that do. What usually happens to those people?"

Enira steps up to the bored asari. "Excuse me. I believe you are currently hiring? I am available for hire."

Mallene will walk up to Captain Erina and speak...

Captain, I think I found us some work. The station is looking for more security I hear and they are offering 600 creds a shift, not sure if they want to do a contract with Eclipse but it would be worth a look...

diplomacy to convince1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Halar sips at her drink and waits for the bartender's response.

Halar should be fine as is :)

@The bar: The bartender pauses for a second before speaking slowly and deliberately. "The odd few that anger the Administrators are given a warning if the offense was not severe or an active threat against the peace. Repeat offenders with a history of violence...well, let's just say that they aren't 'repeating' anything anymore and leave it at that..." he trails off ominously. "Mister Jackson and his Administrators are quite...fond of making examples out of those that break the rules."

@Enira: The asari looks up from the data pad, surprise coming across her features at the sight of a drell on the station. She gives you a brief looking-over before reaching for another datapad and sliding it to you.

"Please fill out this application," she says in a matter-of-fact tone of voice. "Be sure to list combat proficiency, any military history and your alcohol tolerance."

The application itself is fairly run-of-the-mill for any job, and should take the better of ten minutes to fill out.

"Once you've finished," the receptionist continues, "We'll process your application and arrange for an interview with a senior member within the hour."

@Mallene: Your captain raises an eyebrow in response before musing over the offer. "600 for a shift?" she whistles in appreciation of the numbers. "Now that sounds like a nice deal of money to be made..."

So how big was the ship that you came on and how many members are in the current detachment of mercenaries?

The ship itself is a small frigate, smaller then even the SR1. It carries a total of 26 Eclipse mercs, five crew members, Captain Erina and twenty mercs including Mallene.

It is, I have the location marked on my omnitool. I advise that only you and me go check it out, bringing the rest with us indicates a lack of confidence. This is a good chance to get a long term or even permanent contract with the station, with the galaxy on edge like this the Eclipse will need more bases to deploy from. This place is a good candidate for said base.

@Halar, on what response are you waiting? If it was to who is in charge of hiring security personnel, he answered already : "You'd best try your luck with the station's barracks," the bartender pulls up a data pad and pings a location on a map of the Ursa. "Take a right past the giant statue of I-have-no-idea-what-that's-supposed-to-be, go straight until you hit Tidurnk's Barbecue. The barracks are directly to the left of the restaurant."

"Don't worry, not intend on finding that out personally. Was just curious how efficient they were in dealing with trouble. I'll be off now, but thanks for the intel."
Secundus finished his drink, got up and went straight for the location marked on his omni-tool.

Let it be known that the Church of the Enkindlers considers the bearer of this missive, the female Drell who is known as Enira Liis, to be fully competent for the job she is applying for. She has provided excellent services to the Church for 5 years. We have no complaints that can be made about her.

GM:

I would love to be able to post the entire job interview, if you would be comfortable with that. Not the bit about them accepting her, but just the interview. I think it would be enjoyable. :) You would post the final bit. Also, depending on how up on shadow work the station security is, they may or may not recognize the Church of the Enkindlers as being part of the official Hanar Government Body, or know that Hanar Special Forces who retire are always retired as 'Church Security'.

Sorry, I should have clarified, she wanted to hear the answer to Secundus' question. Always good to know just how vicious a potential boss is.

Halar finishes her drink and exits the bar. She decides to take her time; no sense having everyone arrive at once. She looks around the station as she strolls along. If she's going to be a guard she should get an idea of what the locals are like.

I hate emergency college concerts for the Performing Arts...

@Mallene: The commander, after musing for another few moments, says to you, "See if you can arrange a meeting with the top brass. You have my permission to speak on our detachment's behalf. If we strike it rich here, then we can retire comfortably on our own planet!"

@Secundus: You make your way through the milling crowds to the barracks that have been marked on your omni-tool. Sitting on a bench, you see Enira filling out a data-pad.

"Excuse me, sir?" you hear. Turning to face the source of the noise, you find an asari sitting at the reception desk. "Can I be of any assistance?"

@Enira: You notice movement out of the corner of your eye, and see Secundus walking towards the receptionist desk. Shrugging, you finish your application and pass it back to the asari.

"Thank you," she says, taking the data-pad and uploading your application to her terminal. "Please take a seat, and we'll call you when our officer arrives. Feel free to help yourself to our refreshments if you're feeling thirsty."

A drink station has been set up, non-alcoholic of course. Human beverages such as coffee, tea, and their outer-space counterparts are available for consumption.

@Halar: As you walk through the floor, you see that the residential block is filled with people of various species and walks of life. There is a general calm as they go about their lives, but there's this feeling of nervousness, an unspoken anxiety that can be felt even by those fresh off the boat.

Note GM that the Eclipse would also have a mech compliment (forgot about that until I played some ME2 today) of about 40 mechs which would be a mix of LOKI and FENRIS mechs.

Got it Captain, although I doubt i'll be retiring anytime soon... Have some business settle with some old enemies...

With that Mallene marches off to find the top brass, she makes a point of showing up in full Eclipse battle armor minus the helmet...

@GM, should I post my own interview then? See spoilered question

Sorry. Didn't quite see that tab. Go ahead.

@Enira: The asari directs you to a small conference room behind the desk. Inside, a krogan sits on a chair, concentrating on the data-pad he's reading. Based on what you can see, it appears that he's reading your application.

He sees you enter and grunts. "It's rare that I see drell not on the hanar homeworld. But whatever brought you out here to this ass end of the universe isn't my business. However, what is my business is this application right here." He taps the pad before setting it down.

"I'm Sergeant Zerdok of Station Security." He glances at his omni-tool and presses a button. "You have ten minutes. Try to impress me."

@Mallene: People shy away from you as you walk towards your destination. It is completely understandable. The Eclipse have a reputation across the galaxy, and it seems that it's managed to even come on this station on the rim of the galaxy.

I presume that you enter the barracks and try to get to the receptionist? And how big was the ship that you came on? Frigate? Cruiser? Ship size is important.

Small frigate, although it can still hold quite a few mechs. Remember that those things can fold for storage. Yep going to the receptionist and then straight to the brass.

Enira sits in the chair, and nods. "My application is fairly straight forward. It contains the information requested, if there are additional questions, you may ask them."

"Well, I don't consider it complete. You didn't list your skill set. How do I know what you can do?" The krogan says with a bit of annoyance.

"I have all skills required for Security work, and all skills are at minimum acceptable levels or higher for such work. This includes both biotic and technical skills, as well as trained general purpose skills." The drell seems a bit confused by the question.

"So you have all the skills huh? Are you trained in decryption, stealth, electronics, investigation, noticing a pick pocket, tactics, piloting and planting trackers on people?" He names a disparate list of skills.

"Yes, I am. I said, I have all skills required for the job..." She pulls up the application on her omnitool. "Yes, see, Sufficient for Job."

The krogan mutters under his breath and makes some notes. "You left the previous military experience blank, so you didn't fully fill out the form. Do you have any previous military experience..."

Enira sits politely and stares at him for several minutes, not answering.

"Hey, you hear me? I asked you a question."

"Oh, yes, I hear you." She responds promptly.

"Then are you going to answer my question?" The krogan demands.

"I will attempt to answer every question I have an answer to."

"Then do you have military experience?"

Enira smiles politely at him silently.

After a few minutes, the Krogan growls. "What is your name?"

"Enira Liis." She replies promptly.

"Your age?"

"23 years standard." Another prompt reply.

"Previous Military Experience?"

Polite silence.

The krogan stares at her for a minute, then grunts in annoyance. He makes another mark on the form. "Frackin' Drell..."

"What weapons are you proficient with?"

"I am proficient with pistols and sniper rifles." Again, a prompt reply.

The krogan blinks. "Sniper rifles? Not something security people are usually trained in."

Enira nods. "That is true."

"So how did you end up being trained to use a sniper rifle?"

Enira smiles politely and silently.

After a minute the krogran grunts, and makes more marks on the pad. "So, no criminal record?"

"Correct, I have never been arrested for a crime, and therefore have no criminal record."

"Odd way to phrase that..." The krogan says suspiciously.

"Hanar are very precise in their wording. Having worked for them for the last 5 years, it is something of an occupational hazard to be very precise in my phrasing."

Another grunt and some more notes. "Tell me why I should hire you?"

"I'm not certain I understand the question." Enira responds, sounding slightly puzzled. "You will never have a chance to hire a drell security officer again. Honestly, I sort of expected to be told what the advantage of hiring on would be."

The krogan looks a bit askance. "So.. let me understand... You want to know why you should take the job? Rather than explaining to me why I should hire you?"

Enira smiles widely. "Yes! Excellent, I think we are beginning to understand each other, finally!" Enira seems relieved that the two are making headway.

The krogan sits silently for a full minute, then grunts and makes more notes. "Yeah, I'll get back to you on that..." He says, a bit surly. "Now, this reference of yours, it doesn't seem legit..."

Enira's smile vanishes, and her voice is cold as vacuum. "Are you stating that I have lied?" She asks in a cold tone. "I suggest you consider that carefully, especially since the authentication codes on the file can be checked easily enough."

The krogan leans forward. "Don't threaten me, drell..." He holds her eyes for a bit, then without breaking contact, touches his comm. "Abrams, run the authentication codes on that reference file. If they don't come back perfect from the Hanar consulate, you and Seleth come in here and arrest this drell for fraud, and anything else you can think of."

A few minutes of silence later, the comm beeps. "Sir? The Hanar consular is on the line to personally confirm the reference file."

The krogan finally blinks and looks away from the staring contest. "What? The consulate called us back?"

"No sir, the Consular did. Shall I put it through?"

"Of course you put it through! Don't keep a Consular waiting!" The krogan roars.

The Consular confirms the file is authentic, and also that it has checked it's records, and that Enira Liis has a perfect rating with Church Security, and would be an exceptional employee in any position she applies for. The krogan makes polite (for a krogan) noises at the Consular, and then thanks him for his time.

When the call is done, the krogan eyes the drell suspiciously. "So, friends with the Hanar Consular huh?"

"Oh, no, I'm afraid I've never met it. Or any of the Hanar on the station. I've only been on station for 3.75 standard hours." She responds quickly and politely.

The krogan grunts and makes more notes. Then he takes her out to the firing range, and tells her to demonstrate her skills. He steps into the observation room, and pulls up the monitors as she gets ready to shoot. While doing so, he pulls up a comm connection to someone he trusts. "I got a weird application today, Drell, smart ass little b$%$+. Too cute by far for her own good. He listens. "Yeah, a Drell. Weird thing, got a blank recommendation from the Hanar High Church." He listens. "Yeah, Church Security, how'd you know?" He listens some more. "Whattaya mean special forces?" He listens, nodding slowly. "Ah, that might explain why she wouldn't answer any questions about previous military experience... And why a security officer has Sniper training... yeah.. decent shot... hand to hand training... biotic and tech training... Thanks, making more sense now... Fracking smart ass drell..."

Interesting shots. I have a few question though. How do you get to crit threat of 10+?
I'm getting 12+ for sniper rifle and 13+ for Pistol (and with the pistol only in first range increment)
You lower the critical threat by 2 for aiming with a sniper rifle, by 1 for a pistol.
And with your 15 INT you can camp up to 6 actions, for the further 6 drop in critical threat range. I don't see where you're getting the last 2 points.
Don't forget you can't combine the assassination power with 6 rounds of camping, as you need to activate Assassination before camping (as camping states it needs to be the last thing you do before shooting). Seeing as Assassination 2 is only active for 2 actions, it wouldn't be useful in this case. And even if you could it would only get you 1 point of threat range reduction.
And for the pistol, you also have the problem that you can't use camping outside the first range increment unless it's a scoped weapon.

I could be missing something, if so I would like to know, as it's always nice to learn some new stuff (and seeing as I play the sniper in my RL campaign, it could come in handy ;))

Aiming : -2 crit
Camping : (-3 * Int Mod 2) -6 : -8 Total
Assassination : -1 : -9 Total
Looks like I miscounted the total. And I forgot Assassination doesn't apply to pistols, so it would have been 11+ for sniper, and 12+ for pistol. I also didn't realize Assassination and Camping didn't stack, so I guess 12+ for both weapons. I thought the pistol had a scope as well, I wanted a pistol with a scope, because it makes sense a sniper would want a competition type pistol, with a scope.

EDIT : Apparently not. Hmm, I thought sure I had bought a pistol with a scope, but I can't even find one with a scope. Stupid rules, nobody does scopes on a pistol. Dumb.

Only sniper rifles comes with a basic scope pre-installed (which doesn't offer any bonus to attack rolls), for all other weapons they are a weapon mod (and an expensive one for low lvl characters). For pistols they start at 2000 credits. It does come with the advantage that you get +1 to your attack rolls with it when aiming. And although it is only mentioned with the assault rifle & sniper rifle scopes, that you can ignore the only camp in first range increment. I think they missed that somewhere, seeing as the entry for camping only mentions the fact the weapon needs to have a scope (not that it has to be an assault or sniper rifle).

About assassination, camping and aiming. They way I see it is aiming and camping is for when you can take your time. Aiming and assassination is for when you are trying to get a better threat rating in active combat. Although that's only going to be useful once you have fast stabilization, seeing as using 2 whole turns (2 actions to aim, 1 for assassination & 1 for shooting) for 1 attack sequence is usually not the best use of your time in the heat of combat, especially as you are technically a sitting duck for 2 whole turns. Fast stabilization shaves of 1 action, so you might be able to reposition, before, during or after. Is what I learned from being the sniper in the RL campaign I'm in. Slightly different as I'm an infiltrator with tactical cloak and still have to get Fast stabilization due to the high requirements for it.

Well, even with the mods, it was still 1 crit with the sniper rifle and 1 with the pistol.

I know, nothing to sneeze at. The few times my character could camp in the RL campaign, I haven't had the chance to camp that often. Maybe 2 or 3 times. FYI, that character has 18 INT (Salarian, so quite easy to get it high), so on full camp that's 6-20 critical threat.

About the critical fumble, don't forget you need to substract your BAB from the total rolled, which in your case would make it just a temporary jam instead of a wasted thermal clip.

@GM, on that note. Are you using the full critical hits/fumbles rules in the book? I.e. if you roll a 20 on your confirmation roll you have a chance to instantly kill anybody or mutilate one of their body parts. And checking on every 1 whether you have some bad stuff happening? I'm asking because on the critical hits side, I'm not a fan of the you have a 1/8000 chance of dying on the spot (an opponent rolling 3 natural 20's), nor do I like the 1/421 chance of having something bad happen to our characters, seeing as most NPC bad guys won't suffer the ill effects of being shot in the eye or whatnot for very long (unless they are recurring villains) and with aiming/camping/other bonuses, the chances are even higher. (Say someone camping/other bonuses, so they critical threat on a 10, then instant death becomes 1/800 and mutilation is 1/42), on the critical fumble side, it will have a high chance of making someone with a high volume of attacks look like an utter buffoon, rather than a trained merc. I can very easily have 10 to 15 attack rolls in one round. That would mean statistically, every 2 rounds I would have to check what might have gone wrong with an attack.

My preference goes out to the regular crit system (roll critical threat, roll to confirm) and no fumbles, or if absolutely necessary, fumbles similarly working with a confirmation roll. In this sense, rolling again, if it's still a miss, then check for negative effect.

Sorry for wall of text, but best to get this cleared before we're actually in the middle of combat :)

I'm not going to lie when I say that I laughed when I saw how Crits work in MEd20 because of how broken it was.

So yeah, we'll be using the regular crit system of rolling to confirm the crit and rolling to confirm the fumble.

I'll post something more substantial in a few hours. College classes. Ugh...

I hate tests.

@Enira: The krogan scrutinizes you for another second before waving you off. "We'll let you know the status of your application within standard processing. Expect results within two to three days, blah blah blah and all that. Now get the hell out of my office."

He shoes you out the door and back into the receptionist area.

@Secundus: "You heard right, sir," the receptionist replies with a smile on her face. "Just fill out the application and we'll hook you up with one of our senior officers. Matter of fact, if you can get it done quickly, he should be able to take you as soon as your application processes!"

@Mallene: Thanks for the info.

You are at the barracks. Do you wish to get in line?

@Halar: Do you have any particular destination in mind for your meandering around the floor?

Sorry for the delay. I hate tests, extended rehearsals...and all that college schtick.

She will get in "line" is said line doesn't make way for her...

Mallene doesn't actively threaten the people around her but its easy enough to tell that she is dangerous by her body language...

Enira gives Mallene and Secundus a small upper torso bow. "The krogan appears to be in a bad mood, for some reason. Although that may be a redundant statement." She adds, looking thoughtful. "Good luck."

Enira then heads off to find a room in one of the transient hotels on the station. She looks for the cheapest safest place to stay. Ideally a 'coffin hotel'*.

*:

Basically each room is slightly bigger than a large chest freezer, designed for sleep and not much else. You climb up and in, close the door and sleep. Coffin Hotel

Sorry, I got sick over the weekend. I'm not exactly sure where the last 3 days went lol.

Halar notices the tension around her. "Hmm. Something weird here. That bartender was kinda nervous too. Add in how much they pay security...yeah there's something more going on." She turns the offer over in her head. After a few minutes she gives a mental shrug. "Eh. I'll probably have to crack a few skulls. Pay like that's worth some trouble." Firm in her resolve, she strides towards the barracks at a faster clip.

In a logical and chronological order...

As Enira leaves the barracks and Secundus finishes his application, Mallene enters the building with a noticeable stride in her steps, the line behind Secundus giving way to allow the mercenary to pass. The asari in front of the Turian scowls at the Eclipse logo, but manages to retain a professional demeanor for Titus.

"Sergeant Zerdok..." the receptionist begins.

"Is right here."

She jumps at the sight of the lumbering krogan behind her. However, he only has eyes for Titus, and a lingering glance at a far-away Enira. "Seems like a busy day," he muses, looking at Titus up and down with a critical eye. "Rare is it that we get one applicant, but two in the same day, and one a drell? I had to see this for myself..."

He cuts himself off before addressing Secundus directly. "You. Turian. My office. Now." With those words, he lumbers back towards the back of the building, with only a bland waving of the hand to indicate that he should follow him.

--------------------

@Mallene: You see the receptionist take in a deep breath, before putting on a well-rehearsed voice of pure professionalism. "How can I help you?"

@Halar: You enter the barracks within a few seconds after Mallene enters, just catching Enira exiting the building in search of a coffin motel. There is a tense feeling in the air, and you notice that some of the people waiting in the building are directing sour looks at the asari in full Eclipse armor. Nothing seems to be happening yet, but isn't it always calm before the storm?

@Enira: It takes a few minutes, but you eventually find what you're looking for. A video screen in front of the building displays one of its rooms. It's fairly spartan by tourist standards, but the mattress and sheets look clean enough. 60 credits a night.

Eniira pays for a night, looking at her cred stick. She has one night with what was left of her petty cash.

Walking up to the receptionist Mallene speaks with confidence born both of her rank and perhaps of her particular "genetics"...

Eclipse Sergeant Mallene Lidanya, I ain't here to speak with you. Eclipse wants to take a contract out with this station, I need to see the brass, now.

Mallene puts special emphasis on the last word, it's not quite a "bark" but anyone can tell that this mercenary is use to giving orders and being obeyed...

Secundus followed sergeant Zerdok into the back office while he heard Mallene bossing the receptionist around. Wonder how that'll end. he thought, the office door closing behind him.

He sat down, waiting for the Krogan to start the interview.
Don't have a funky interview concept like Enira had, so I'm waiting for input :) @Enira, that was a fun read btw :)

Halar takes her place at the back of the line. She shifts so she has a clear line of sight to Mallene. "This should be interesting" she thinks. The salarian in front of her is definitely giving the mercenary a sour look. Halar keeps watching Mallene as she talks. She tries to keep her voice down. <dissaproving tone> That's prety rude. Passing the line and barking at the poor secretary. Do you get a lot of mercs here?"

Steps in, pokes, and slinks out.

Welcome back. I finally finished that gorram paper.

@Mallene: The asari receptionist levels you a cool glare before pushing a button. A machine on the desk beeps and prints out a slip of paper for you. "Please take the slip and wait for your number to be called. Have a nice day, ma'am," she finishes.

Will you respond to Halar?

@Halar: The rest of the people in the reception room look to you with a bit of apprehension and awe for mouthing off to an Eclipse Sister.

@Secundus: "I'll say to you what I said to the lizard lady," the krogan rumbles. "You have ten minutes. Impress me."

"What are your years of experience? What is your favorite weapon? Which frontiers have you served on? Who trained you?"

He fires rapid questions at you.

@Enira: Are you asleep yet?

+1 for 'gorram', a word I use on a regular basis

Mallene studiously ignores the easy to detect voice of the Elcor and takes the slip of paper... She will wait till her time has come.

Secundus looked at the Krogan. I can see why they normally don't have many applications ...

"I have served as part of the Turian Military on Invictus for 15 years. The duties of my field unit were what you could call planetary protection. Most of our time was spent cleaning up the scum that drifted to our planet from the Terminus Systems, which involved treks through the planet's tropical belt. The rest of our time was filled with basic city security and combat training. Training was provided by the Military Training Officers stationed in our base on Invictus."

"I spent the last 6 years working for several clients, mostly those interested in personal protection services. All contracts were ended in a satisfactory manner."

"I personally prefer to use assault rifles, as they are perfect for both precision firing and suppression firing when necessary. We were also trained to work well in close quarter environments and crowded fighting spaces, which in my view is perfect for security detail."

Is there a ballistic skills test after this interview where my weapons skills can be verified?"
