On Initiative and Combat....
When combat is initiated, I will roll initiative and sort the intiatives out into groups. The following is an example:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 PC A
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 PC B
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 PC C
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 PC D
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16 PC E
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 PC F
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20 PC G
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 Ziggy
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Spiders (from Mars!)
The groupings would be as follows:
Group One: A,C,D,G
Spiders
Group Two: E, F
Ziggy
Group Three: B
People in Group One act in order of first post, first act. Then the Spiders' actions are posted, then Group Two goes in order of first post, first act, then Ziggy's post, and lastly PC B goes (if there were more in group 3 they would go in order of first post, first act.) Once B posts, then the next round begins again with Group One acting in order of first post first act.
This is so that you don't have to wait for the other PCs to act in a set initiative order, but PCs act in relative order to the bad guys.
To continue the example, on the first round, Group One gets to go. Player G is the first one to post his action and therefore goes first. Player A sees he's in group one and posts his action, aware of what PC G has already done. Player D is next to post (and therefore act), and then finally Player C checks the board and posts his action- no one has t retrofit to PC C even though he "won" the initiative, by posting last in his group, he "delayed" until just before the Spiders.
Once the round cycles through, a new round begins. This time player A is on the boards and posts first, followed by C, then G, then D, as that's how they happened to post during round two.
Round three Player C decides to get funky and declares "I'm delaying until Group Two goes." From then on, he acts with group two.

On the Tarnhammer Clan:
Garnult, Elmador, and Mirrin are descendants of the Tarnhammer clan. Please work out how you're related to each other (Brother/Uncle/Cousin) here.
Other PCs, if you have any link to the Tarnhammer family (third cousin twice removed's former sister-in-laws roommate aside) please also post them here.

nilesr |

Thank you kindly for choosing Garnult to be in the campaign. I'll be making an Alias and posting a bunch more tonight.
IIRC my choice/roll for the relationship was that Brygga saved my life for some purpose.

nilesr |

Couple of things for the GM. First, Paladin's codes and Paladins in general. I don't think of Paladins as cookie cutter at all and I like to RP Paladins differently depending on the god they chose. So for a god like Brygga who isn't "good" per se having a code is more of a lawful thing with the good coming from the outcomes of the code. How do you feel about this set of codes that I shamelessly stole from the Torag and Abadar writeups.
My word is my bond. When I give my word formally, I defend my oath to my death. Traps lie in idle banter or thoughtless talk, and so I watch my tongue. I do not tell the secrets of the Dwarfish ways, but I will allow others to benefit from my knowledge.
I am at all times truthful, honorable, and forthright, but my allegiance is to my people. I will do what is necessary to serve them, including misleading others.
Against my people's enemies I will show no mercy. I will not allow their surrender, except to extract information. I will defeat them, and I will scatter their families. Yet even in the struggle against our enemies, I will act in a way that brings honor to the Steel Sister.
I am a protector of the deep paths and keep travelers from harm. No matter their destinations or goals, if they are peaceable and legitimate travelers who harm no others on the road, I will ensure that they pass safely.
Does this seem ok, and do you need more?
Secondly, Heir of Dammerhall trait. I was thinking of Garnult as the sole heir in my writeup but I'm not sure how that works for everyone else. I definitely designed Garnult with the idea of being a Dwarven King in Exile, sort of like Thorin Oakenshield. How does everyone feel about that?
Also, Leadership feat....ok to take at 7th or no?

![]() |

Elmador isn't really very close to the throne at all. Second son of a third son of a third son of a second son kind of deal. So distant cousin to Garnult and Mirrin. He's met both on a couple of occasions each but they aren't particularly close.
I have no problem with Garnult being a main heir - if the campaign features Kingdom Building at some later date Elmador would probably aim for Counsellor position rather than ruler. Much more suited to that.
GM, what kind of creatures is Bryggya served by? I rolled for "visited by agent of the patron" and need to work that into the background. I'm thinking of having that agent (whatever it is) having saved Elmador's life - the lung disease as a child should have killed him outright but Brygga saw a mind made to unravel secrets and so saved his life. He wasn't fully healed though because a child's, even a dwarven child's, body can't be touched by such celestial/axiomatic power without being left marked.

Donagh |

Donagh checking in, this is just a first post to establish a connection to the campaign.
I will post more this weekend and fill my profile
Question regarding the init rules: would it make sense to combine group 3 and 1 after the first round?

![]() |

Oh and would I be able to swap out the Student of Philosophy trait for the Clever Wordplay trait? I didn't have the Pathfinder Society Primer when making Elmador so hadn't seen it - it makes diplomacy fully intelligence based (rather than just to persuade others). It means I'd lose Int to convince people that a lie is true but I don't see Elmador as much of a liar. If it's not okay then no worries.

Mirrin of The Deep |

Secondly, Heir of Dammerhall trait. I was thinking of Garnult as the sole heir in my writeup but I'm not sure how that works for everyone else. I definitely designed Garnult with the idea of being a Dwarven King in Exile, sort of like Thorin Oakenshield. How does everyone feel about that?
I don't see your prerequisite scruffy beard and angst sir! All kings in exile require a scruffy beard adn angst!
Seriously though I pulled mirrin from pretty much the same inspiration in terms of the Aragorn/Thorin vibe with a side of Elric.
Chances are Mirrin would be the closest heir by dint of being oldest and by dint of, well, being told enough and close enough that people would approach him and attempt to manipulate him to their way of thinking (politics!).
However he may as well be the farthest by dint of simply wanting to be as far away from the nonsense as possible. So from Mirrin's perspective, yes he is the heir to dammerhall, but he's willing to pass on the actual responsibility, inevitable poisonous whispers and political bullshit to a willing sucker (looks at that 8 int and 9 wis).
Garnult! Truly thou art the king! Long liveth the king!
Mirrin probably would participate in the government but in a quiet role behind the throne knowing that if his first cousin Garnult allows the power to go to his head and he should fail his paladinhood and his kingdom Mirrin's in a decent enough position to remove him and find a worthy replacement (again not Mirrin).
Mirrin rolled a 20 on the patron deal iirc that means Brygga contacted him directly.

Garnult Tarnhammer |

Ok so, Mirrin is actually closest to the throne by birth but doesn't want to claim the throne?
How about if we go with the idea that Elmador through his research tracked down the the other two heirs of Dammerhall with the idea that it could be reclaimed.
Mirrin ofc wanted nothing to do with the kingship, but Garnult, having lost his father in an earlier trek into the Darklands desperately wants to reclaim Dammerhall and restore the Dwarven monarchy.
Garnult convinces Merrin, through many diplomacy rolls and heartfelt entreaties to come along, because he knows that Merrin is wiser and more knowledgeable.
I see Merrin and Elmador as the Gloin or Balin to Garnult's Thorin.
Also, I noticed that we have no melee specialist...should I change Garnult to be a Sword and Pick fighter instead of a Longaxe using reach specialist?

TarkXT |

Ehhhh that doesn't gel well with Mirrin's backstory.
I think after a long while of trying to get Mirrin he failed and Mirrin disappeared back into the depths for several weeks before, with no explanation, he reappeared again seeking him and insisting that whatever research their erstwhile cousin found about Mirrin he keeps it between them and that unless a time come when it's required to be otherwise (such as dying without an heir) Garnult is the sole living heir to Dammerhall. And thus we gathered the rest of our willing emergency rat..er, clan and traveled into the depths.

I have a copy of genomapper on my home computer (en route to work now, the joys of shift work). I can and will draw up a fictional family tree if you're willing to give me some immediate family names nilesr and TarkXT!
If a secret like Mirrin being the oldest living heir being in Elmador's tome of lineage and myth that book should probably be the target of the Attached drawback but...so many traits all ready
Two longaxe wielders is likely to be more brutal than a sword and board - think of all those narrow confines you'll be able to control

Dain Harladorn |

And just for you guys to have some kind of meatshield, Dain is currerntly sword and board (Ok, pick/hammer and board) and he has the biggest armor and shield he could have bought for the paltry 140gp Inquisitors start with. So no problem for me to take the "lead spot" while a pair of long axes are buzzing around me :-)

Donagh |

Donagh's relationship to Bryggya is simple: she is his Deity.
Regarding the Tarnhammers: Donagh is not (directly) related to them. There has probably be someone in his family line that married into the Tarnhammers or the other way around but Donagh is not aware of that.

Garnult Tarnhammer |

Garnult's father is Trokil Tarnhammer, that much I have thought of. Haven't thought of many other names/relations.

For those who missed it the first time around, the patron relations chart (remember you may pick or roll):
1. Doubting Thomas. As above. If there is already one
in the party, reroll this result.
2. The patron saved your life. You’d be dead without
the patron’s aid. But why were you saved?
3. The patron gave you a vision. You saw something
you cannot forget and it drives you on this quest.
4. The patron spoke to you. In your darkest hour, you
heard the voice of the divine. You are not sure entirely
what the words meant, but it has given you purpose.
5. The patron sent a messenger. You saw an angel, demon
or some other creature and it gave you a mission.
6. The patron gave you a token. The holy symbol or
trinket you carry is a gift from the patron.
7. The patron changed you. A miracle happened and
you were physically marked as the patron’s chosen.
8. The patron brought you here. You were mystically
teleported or transported to this place.
9. The patron is testing you. Recent trials are a test of
your faith. You must prove yourself worthy!
10. Your bear the mark. A sacred birthmark foretold
by prophecy reveals you as the patron’s chosen agent.
11. You were born on the Patron’s holy day.
12. You were an orphan found on the temple steps.
13. You were raised by a priest of the Patron. He recognized
in you the Patron’s favor.
14. When you cry the Patron’s name, you have never
known defeat.
15. You followed a prophet. Even though the prophet
is now dead, still you remember the sacred teaching.
16. Your dying parent told you of your destiny.
17. Your life so far fulfills a prophecy in a holy text.
18. Your friend (another PC) believes in the patron.
So what’s the harm of humoring the friend?
19. The patron might be your father.
20. The patron made you his agent. Whatever character
class you thought you were playing, you are now
a divine servant (cleric, paladin, etc.) of the patron.

The Paladin code post you made in the recruitment thread was one of the reasons Garnult was chosen (I like it!) Let me think if there's anything I would add and get back to you.
On the Heir of Dammerhall, I included a few people with that trait in order to accomplish a few things, included but not limited to increasing the we are family/we are royalty aspect the campaign premise, giving a kind of familial bond to the PCs and to cause a little bit of intra-party conflict for RP purposes. The way I see it, Mirrin was the eldest heir to the throne, but he has abdicated his claim, bringing Garnult forward as the chief claimant, one both willing and able to take up the responsibilities of the throne. Elmador is perhaps further down the chain, but is the keeper of the family history and can aid in proving your claim to any doubters.
Yes, the Leadership feat will become available at 7th level.

GM, in your PbP's how do you handle combat? Tactically with maps or more freeform?
I prefer a tactical approach in most of my gameplay. Since this is the first PbP I've run in a long time, I have to do some research on what my best option is for hosting such things.

In regards to the background, here are some things brewing in my mind regarding the Tarnhammers, et al.
Elmador's research reveals that Mirrin was the oldest known direct heir to the throne of Dammerhall, born a few scant years before his cousin Garnult.
Elmador, Mirrin, and Garnult lost their fathers on the same day, in the battle only Garnult survived. Suggested change to backstory/narration since Bryggya does not have a voice to have spoken to him: As Garnult lay broken but not destroyed on the battlefield surrounded by his fallen kin, and feels the strangely soothing embrace of death, his thoughts of joining his family are shattered by pain, and he regains consciousness. A Dwarven maiden silently sits above him, her hand on his chest, laid bare by some force that has rent his armor open. She sadly shakes her head, pointing to his dead father and uncle, all his kinsmen. She pulls him to his feet, and then she is gone. His wounds have been closed. (Even now, in the dark of night or any other absence of light, the scars, not visible by the sight of men, glow a silver sheen under darkvision.)
While Garnult struggled to make sense of why he was spared, Mirrin became inundated with dwarves seeking a return to Dammerhall and glory. They wanted him to pick up where his father left off. But his father left off bleeding on a cave floor surrounded by the enemies of dwarvenkind. And Mirrin has no patience for fools or sycophants and even less for those who thought themselves wise enough to manipulate him. After the death of his mother at the hands of those who would see him king, Mirrin left the clanholds, seeking solace in brew and darkness.
While Elmador isn't exactly on the top of the list of Heirs of the Dammerhall throne, he was always fascinated by the stories of it's glory, and obsessed by the lack of information about its fall. He has studied the genealogies and knows that their are fewer then two dozen dwarves still alive within the Tarnhammer bloodline. In another decade, there may be fewer than a dozen. The time to seek the restoration of the lost kingdom of the dwarves is now, the iron has been cooling too long and another blow like the one at the battle in which their fathers were lost could shatter the blade of hope forever.
Any discussions Elmador may have ever had with Mirrin regarding the throne were met with contempt, and that was before he wandered off into the underdark, probably getting himself killed in some dank hole. Mirrin has given up on dwarven society, and has proven his own words: he is no king. Elmador has had more luck with his other distant cousin, Garnult. While the battle changed Garnult, it also left him undeniably second in line for the throne of Dammerhall. And if Mirrin would have nothing to do with it, perhaps it was time for Garnult to step up to that plate.
The research and planning has been over a year in the making- the key to Dammerhall lies not in climbing to find it, but rather in delving- there is an underground entry known to so very few. The priesthood of Bryggya know something of this, something Garnult has learned in his struggles to understand why he was spared. To that end, they have contacted the secretive church and asked for aid in their quest to retake Dammerhall. Aid they have received in the form of Dain and Donagh.
Needing an expert on the dangers of the underdark if they are to survive the long journey, they have found one in Wrex, an odd but extremely useful dwarven cave druid with reasons of his own for joining the expedition. Wrex is a friend to the church of Bryggya and has aided many a Bryggyan priest on his deep journey.
Elmador's research and Bryggya's lore told of one further thing needed to complete the journey: a Dammerhall-crafted short sword cloaked in legend. It was somehow the key to reclaiming Dammerhall. Months of inquiries both discreet and overt led nowhere, and the journey was delayed.
One day, it just walked into Dain's brewhouse at the side of a young dwarf seeking a bit of the good stuff. Grunyar thought the brewer was pulling his leg when he recognized the blade, going almost as far as walking out. After all, he'd been the butt of many an elder's jokes before. But he had known from the moment he's laid eyes on it that this blade was special. And now, it was leading him into something that felt like.... destiny. And, if it was destiny, maybe it would help him overcome the guilt and shame he felt for the means he received the blade.
For four days and nights Mirrin lay in a crack in a granite wall and shivered with hallucinations and nightmares. A dwarven woman being tortured by a foul black-skinned elf with seven arms. She neither cried out nor gave in. Mirrin could feel her pain, could feel the needles trying to pierce her skin. He could feel the wrack stretching her limbs. He could feel her control and her strength. He could feel her longing to be by her brother's side, forging all manner of wonders. At the end of it, when his water was nearly gone and tired from the struggle with the venom he made his way back to civilization to gather what remained of his family, and reclaim what was rightfully theirs to forge.

Wrekhlaem "Wrex" Quartzhaul |

I had rolled a 9. The patron is testing you. Recent trials are a test of your faith. You must prove yourself worthy!
Welcome to the underground, friends, I shall be your guide! Not that any dwarf worth his lick a' salt should need a guide in the tunnels our ancestors called home.... But hey, better safe than sorry, eh?

The backstory looks awesome.....

Garnult Tarnhammer |

Incorporated GM changes into Garnult's backstory. Looking forward to getting this thing going!
Reckless, I GM one pbp game here on the forums and I've used Google docs for pretty much everything in combat.

I use Maptools, prinstscreen/paint, and imageshack. With a small bit of prepwork to get maptools set up I can get stuff like this for my players.

Donagh |

GM, you have got it nailed, what a way to tie in our back stories!
I have chosen nr 20 for Donagh, but that was probably already obvious.
There is also a bit of testing involved; the death of of his brother Deaglan and Donagh's role in that. Donagh is still not at ease with that. I have no clear vision how that will work out, we will see.
Another thing: Donagh will be crafting things. I will try not to abuse the crafting system, however visions on what constitutes abuse can differ. Do you want me to put forward the items I want to craft in the discussion thread before they are RP'ed out?
I assume no issues with crafting standard and masterwork items/armor/weapons. However given the campaign I will not assume the availability of alternative materials until they are found / bought in character.

Grunyar Stonejoy |

I really like the way you tied the backgrounds together.
I could roll for the relation chart, but if yout hink the story would be better with a pick of being tested, then lets choose that one instead. I have no need to roll.

Garnult Tarnhammer |

I think the idea of at least one of the dwarves kinda swept along by fate is pretty cool. Very Bilbo Bagginsesque....

![]() |

Sorry, when I said "the one" I meant rolled "1", as in Doubting Thomas. Everyone else has at least an inkling of Bryggya's hand in this, but Grunyar is a young dwarf who is being dragged into it from the outside. By an item he's stolen from the (rightful?) owner. I was thinking it would play into how you wrote him up if he had doubts about his role in the party, doubts if this goddess everyone's blabbing on about could have chosen him when he's never even heard of her, etc. I thought that would play up Grunyar's inner conflicts of doubt and regret.
If you want to go with that, great. If you'd rather bring Grunyar into a closer relationship with the patron, roll of choose one of the other ideas on the list.

Ehhhhhh. No. Setting aside that your shield basically does nothing but make up for the difference of the big dex mirrin has and the heavy armor Garnult has. We both have equal to or higher AC (because Garnult's smite gives him a solid +5 to ac) than you and harder hitting attacks. It would be better for you to two hand that pick and smack people apart with it. With the crit modifier on it you'll pretty much explode whatever you crit. That way you can save your judgments for offense/healing when you need it.
In any case this did have me thinking about simple silly tactics that I want to get out of the way before we start facing off against every black elf in the underlands. I've been finding that when I don't have the discussion I run into regret and tears later. PArticularly since Way of the Wicked hates the fact that your characters had hit points and dreams.
But if you're not interested in what I have to say or contributing to a conversation about group tactics going forward feel free to ignore the rest though I do encourage you to stay and click yon spoiler.
First, if you haven't already read this and just to get a good idea on how I feel about meatshields read this
The goal here is not to tell anyone how to play their character but to get this group of related people to fight as their forefathers did perhaps in a way that seems to fit for the characters. If I say something you disagree with either on part of my ignorance about your character (very possible) speak up and let us know so we can work something else out.
So, first let's just look at what we have.
Mirrin - Switch hitting reach ranger (making use of that high dex)
Garnult - Paladin with reach weapon (I find it interesting that Mirrin and Garnult fight exactly the same way. LEgacy of our fathers?)
Gunyar - TWF rogue
Donagh - Cleric of "things" (By the way, Mr. Donagh did you really need the 18 charisma when you gave up channel energy and only have diplomacy as a charisms skill? I'm just curious about it.)
Dain - Melee inquisitor (You have combat reflexes too? By Brygga man get yourself a longspear! We'll be a massive wall of "f*%+ off!")
Elmador - Standard God Wizard by the looks of it.
Wrex - Casting Druid (the thought of a hairy dwarf cuddling that slug is going to keep me up at night.)
So pretty much everything we could ask for. Initiative wise it looks like;
Rogue: +6
Ranger: +4
Wizard: +4
Paladin: +2
Inquisitor: +2
Cleric: +1
Druid: +1
Ideally we'd want all our full casters to act first on the enemy. With all our big melee hitters having combat reflexes and potentially all having reach weapons that puts us in a good position to sit back a around or two and let arrows and spells fly. Which works great for us since we're pretty slow (being dwarves and all).
So I imagine rounds will usually consist of our melee elements readying actions to smack people that come within reach and relying on combat reflexes to deal with any more who try to follow behind them.
If we have a wide enough area and ahve to go on the offensive we can split the party up to dodge aoe effects and ensure a good offensive spread. Here' how I would propose divindg up the party into squads.
A Team (Garnult, Gunyar): The two party members who least rely on spells or archery should most definitely be the lead offensive group. Makes a good kind of sense for the future Lord of Dammerhall to lead from the front in a charge.
B Team (Mirrin, Dain) Since dain might also want to cast a spell or two and mirrin will in all likelihood start combat with his bow out we cna afford to move forward more slowly then team pally/rogue
C Team (The full casters): In the back chucking spells and otherwise playing support to the other two groups sending summons or perhaps companions to back up one of the other two groups should they get swamped.
Confines will be an issue wiht sucha big group so we may end up actually splitting into two groups when exploring deeply enclosed areas so our numbers don't actively harm one another.
Anyway I'd love to hear thoughts on this from the rest of you. EAch of us being family means each of us has a vested interest in the rest's of us survival. And I find it immensely amusing that when I first wrote the forge a part of my mind palyed it out like a dwarven metaphor for small squad combat. Well maybe except Gunyar (whose name might as well be Bilbo by this point :P).

Dain Harladorn |

Just a question, I see some of you guys are using Eastern equipment. I know that some of the GM's might frown, so I did not use any of the options presented there, although Four Mirror Armor would be a much nicer option than a scale mail. What does the GM say?
On another note - no Combat reflexes here :-( Took Intimidating prowess so I might better support some of you guys at a later time...and it felt just "right" for the inquisitor.

TarkXT |

I thought i saw on your sheet combat reflexes. Never mind. Previous advice still applies though if you take it.
I did take the Kikko but in my mind I see it less as a piece of eastern armor than a classic Brigandine. Which sadly hasn't really been statted up. The kikko is the best equivalent that works.

Donagh |

TarkXt:
I pondered this a bit, as so much was possible and decided to build a forgemaster. I have been looking at this archetype for a while before and think it is lacking in relation to other clerical archetypes or a standard cleric although it has loads of flavor.
With the 20 int I get the rune ability for 2* lvl hours per day, which isn't shabby at all. Giving up channel was the hardest thing, especially with the 18 cha.
On skills: the only CHA class skill for a cleric is diplomacy. A rank in the others would gain me just a +1 bonus OR open up UMD instead of giving the +4 bonus that investing a rank in a class skill does. I might invest in one of the other cha skills at lvl 2, although only bluff and maybe UMD see fitting to Donagh at this point in time. A trait to get bluff was out of the question: does not fit my image of him. He might use bluff to lie against non-dwarves, but never against dwarves.
I will have at lease 1 rank available as I am not intending to further develop craft (blacksmithing). The rank in that is for backstory reasons; It always irks me when the best armorsmith can not make a horseshoe (I know, you can craft untrained). I might also not invest in appraise anymore, but there again I thought it is fitting my background

Dain Harladorn |

Guys, just briefly (posting from phone), if you believe that it would be better overall for the party for Dain to take a reach-weapon and Combat reflexes (I have Dex 14, so doable), I am more than willing to change (put Combat rfl instead of Intimidating prowess to be more effective).

Donagh |

Another thing: Donagh will be crafting things. I will try not to abuse the crafting system, however visions on what constitutes abuse can differ. Do you want me to put forward the items I want to craft in the discussion thread before they are RP'ed out?
I assume no issues with crafting standard and masterwork items/armor/weapons. However given the campaign I will not assume the availability of alternative materials until they are found / bought in character.
GM, can you answer this question? Thanks.
