Seeing Anton move up to the door, Akshara edges closer. Sniffing helplessly at the air, she watches the druid's back and seems anxious. Everyone is acting to tense, so concerned. With Elion ahead, she can feel a knot of worry forming in the pit of her stomach, ears folded back and eyes wide.

Out of the corner of his eye, Teral notices Akshara growing tenser. He eyes her warily for a moment, then thinks better of it. He lays a callused hand on her shoulder slowly, cautiously, trying to soothe the agitated girl...cat...thing, if somewhat awkwardly. He gives her an approximation of a reassuring smile, trying to get across a sense of confidence, although his slightly too-sharp teeth make it a bit odd.

As the door is thrown open, Bellicus advances into the room. His attention is drawn to the whimpering thing beneath the blankets. "Right, out with you, whatever you are," he barks. "Present yourself, or taste Chelish steel."

Leynus rolls his eyes and darts in front of the warrior. "Subtle as always, Bellicus." And then, to the whimpering pile of blankets, "Please don't worry yourself about him. If you bear us no ill will, you shall come to no harm in our presence."

Akshara flinches at the touch of Teral's hand on her shoulder, eyes wide and pupils saucer-round. She stares at Teral for a moment, then folds her ears back against her head and looks in the direction everyone else is staring in. He can feel the fur beneath his hand bristling, and also the wedge-shaped lizard scales that are hidden beneath the fur.

FF 1-02

The huge pit, it turns out, is the ashy remains of a bonfire which seems to have little bits of armor and reptilian scales in it.

At the sound of raised voices, the creature under the bench bolts upright, smacking its head on the bench, and starts to yap in panic...

The pathetic kobold before you yaps and stammers for a few moments...

Draconic:
Gah! Please no more hurting! Yusdrayl said-

... then it realizes you are decidedly not kobolds. It stands up nervously, levels a pitiful, rusty, over-sized short sword at you, looks down the length of Bellicus's sword, then screams and drops its "weapon."

In broken common, it begs, "I s-s-surrender! Surrender! No kill Meepo!"

The poor kobold is covered in scars, especially on its forearms and face.

On sight of the tiny creature, Akshara nearly leaps right onto it like a cat with a mouse. Instead she lunges forward a few inches, ears back and teeth bared, snarling viciously at Bellicus' side. Her brows furrow, fingers curl and tail goes rigid. Every bit of her posture is indicative of a desire to spring into action with gnashing jaws.

But the beast does not command her at the moment, and instead she waits like a readied bow; string taut, prepared to fire.

"Eeeeep!"

Meepo turns to run from Akshara, tripping over the bench and sending trinkets and junk skittering across the room. He bangs his face on the hard stone floor and groans in pain, clutching his head in his hands and shutting his eyes tight. "Meepo's end is here! Poor Meepo, p-p-poor Meepo..."

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"Um... Hi?"

Even as Leynus tries to calm him, Meepo cringes with every word spoken to him, as if any one of them might suddenly be accompanied by a boot or a blade.

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"Akshara, Bellicus, maybe you could back up and give it some space?" Elion asks quietly so as not to spook him, or her, or whatever this thing is, "We're not here to hurt you, um Meepo was it? Has someone been beating up on you?"

diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Leynus glances at Akshara and then back at the rest of the group, shaking his head slightly as if admonishing them for scaring the kobold. He walks towards Meepo and then kneels slowly on the floor, giving the most sincere smile he can.

"No one is going to be killing Meepo. Calm yourself, little friend. Your end is still far off in the murky and untold future. To repeat my friend Elion, over there - has anyone been harming you? Or are falls like that common?"

Leynus gives the room a more thorough glance and frowns. "And why are you lurking in such a dingy room? Have you been left behind?" He indicates the debris scattered near the firepit.

Meepo, realizing that at least these two elfish folk don't seem bent on killing him, scampers over to them and positions himself so that Leynus and Elion are between him and Bellicus. "Oh g-great long-ears, Meepo thanks you! Meepo worries that his life will end soon, for Meepo is a bad kobold, a-a-awful kobold!! Meepo was Keeper of Dragons, but dragon is gone! Meepo looks for it, but it is not here! Mighty Yusdrayl says that Meepo will be dead if Meepo does not get the dragon back... but goblins have dragon! Goblins are too tough for Meepo!"

"This room was dragon's room. Dragon kept goblins away! But then many goblins come and take dragon. Meepo's friends retreat. Next time goblins come, they find Yusdrayl's throne room! Not good for kobolds... not good for Meepo!"

Bellicus glowers at Elion. "I shall stay my blade, thief, but not upon your order. This creature is far too cravenly to present a threat to us. And besides, it tells a most fascinating tale." True to his word, the warrior lowers his blade, though his voice still carries the same iron it held. "I find it hard to believe that creatures like yourself kept a dragon, vermin, but I find it even more unlikely that goblins could have stolen a dragon. What was this, a statue? Some draconic icon? And who is this Yusdrayl, your chieftain?"

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

Elion winces and peers around fearfully,"Dragon? Surely you didn't keep a dragon in here... did you?"

"Oh yes, mighty dragon! Meepo dares not speak its name!! Meepo is... Meepo was... Keeper of Dragons! Meepo has scars to prove it!! Meepo had great and noble task of feeding dragon! Meepo kept it in that cage, because dragon was great and terrible. But now dragon is gone! Gone, gone, gone!! Now Meepo is surely dead! Stupid goblins, stupid stupid goblins!"

With everyone's focus on the kobold, Akshara slinks up to Anton, sniffs at him, then circles past Valeria and walks around the periphery of the group, sometimes in a stooped two-legged posture, other times walking on all fours like an animal. By the time she's made a full circuit, Akshara is behind Meepo, creeping up on the kobold before giving him a cursory sniff at the back of his neck.

"Whrr?" Akshara rumbles, head tilted to the side, one ear flat out and the other perked forward. Squatting down on the ground, Akshara watches the kobold with amusement, her scaled tail flicking left and right while the others talk. There may be vital information to attain, but Akshara seems more interested in how playful the tiny, skittering lizard-critter is.

Male Half-Elf Witch 1, Cleric 1, HP 13/13 (14 NL dmg)

Teral's eyes go wide at the pathetic kobold's claims, and he says incredulously, "A dragon?! That you kept...in a cage." He snorts. "Right."

He turns to the others. "I'd guess they kept some kind of giant lizard down here, but if it's really like he says, I'll eat my jacket."

Male Elf Dirge Bard 1, HP 9/9

Leynus glances towards Teral and smiles slightly. "That would be a sight to see. I almost hope it really was a dragon."

His thin-fingered hands disappear beneath his hood and the material shifts and rustles slightly as the elf scratches the back of his head. "So you had your dragon, Meepo, but goblins came and took it... and now you're under penalty of death if you do not retrieve it? Quite the conundrum... and you're not even to blame for this disaster! What do the goblins want from the kobolds, that they would even dare to steal a dragon? Is it a territory dispute?"

With an expression on her face like that of a mother catching her child's hand in the cookie jar, Val looks to Akshara. "Akshara, please don't eat our little friend here. We only just met him!"

Turning to Meepo, she inquires, "So, goblins stole your dragon. That sounds very serious. How many goblins came in to take your dragon?" Val also estimates the size of the missing creature from the size of its cage. "And why would they want to steal such a dangerous creature, anyway?"

Turning to Teral, she whispers...

Varisian:
"I think you're right about this 'dragon' merely being an oversized lizard of some kind. But let's not tell him that. We may get some useful information out of him!

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

Elion will unobtrusively examine the scars Meepo claims were caused by the dragon. Are they burns? cuts?

perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Meepo's scars seem to be the result of many encounters with very sharp claws and teeth.

The little kobold skitters away from Akshara and hides behind the cage. "Goblins our enemies, they live in place of dragons! We want to live in place of dragons, so we come here, fight goblins. Bring dragon to help! Dragon kills many goblins, but then goblins take dragon... lots of goblins, too many goblins!... and now maybe goblins win more fights soon... goblins not smart, but goblins mean, and kobolds no have dragon..."

Meepo grows angry and stomps around for a few moments, then and points up at some crude Draconic writing on the wall above the cage, which reads here be dragons. "No dragons be here now! Stupid goblins! This DRAGON PLACE, not GOBLIN PLACE!! Soon, not Meepo place either!" Meepo peeks out at the group with a hopeful look in his eyes. "Unless... maybe you help make this dragon place again, and Yusdrayl be happy with Meepo? Or maybe you talk to Yusdrayl? Meepo take you to Yusdrayl, you explain that you help us! Big rewards for big people if big people get back dragon for kobolds!"

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"What could possibly go wrong..."

Meepo pauses to seriously consider Elion's question. "Well... Meepo think... goblins could kill you, or dragon could eat you, or Yusdrayl could hurt poor Meepo again, or stupid traps could kill us, or strange cat person could eat Meepo, or scary knight person could skewer Meepo, or that other scary knight person could come back and skewer Meepo! Meepo think... lots could go wrong... but lots always goes wrong..."

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"Other scary knight person? Tell us more about the other scary knight."

M Human Druid (Reincarnated Druid) 2

"For clarity, our bully with daddu issues is NOT a knight."

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"Sure, sure, but the other scary knight. What can you tell us of him?"

"He came here, not long back Meepo thinks, yes... he came and Meepo hid! He spoke with Yusdrayl... made arrangements, kobolds not to fight him! Not fight his friends, either.... too bad, they look tasty.... but they go to goblin territory.... goblins probably eat them all up! No dinner for Meepo. You want know more? Yusdrayl always know more..."

Val sighs deeply, and looks to the rest of the party. "As much as I hate to suggest voluntarily walking into a monster's lair, perhaps Meepo's leader could provide us with some valuable information."

Elion fishes some of the broken armor and scales out of the fire pit for a closer look.

Absently he mentions, "I should check that door stone door with the fish on it before we move on. It was locked but maybe I can tickle it open. Hey what do you guys make of these scales?"

When Elion calls attention to something he fished out of the fire pit, he feels a hand press on his shoulder and Akshara leans over his shoulder from behind, sniffing and snorting at the scales in his hand, her neck pressed against the side of his head, practically crawling over the rogue. Her tail thumps against the back of his knee, and her free hand becomes planted on top of his head to brace herself.

She's helping.

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

"Um, yeah. Here, you can have these." Slowly and carefully squirming out from under Akshara. "I'll get some more"

Male Half-Elf Witch 1, Cleric 1, HP 13/13 (14 NL dmg)

Teral snorts in mingled amusement and irritation. "We may as well go meet Yusdrayl. If there's some chance of not fighting everything in here, we should probably give it a try."

He glances at Meepo, and adds an aside to Val.

Varisian:
"Doesn't seem likely, though."

When Elion speaks up, Teral leans over to take a look at the scales he's referring to. "Huh. Not sure... Maybe from Meepo's "dragon"?"

FF 1-02

The scales seem to be kobold scales.

The "dragon fish" door is locked, though it does not seem to be magically locked like the "dragon" door was.

Meepo waits while you inspect the fire pit and the door, occasionally jumping up in alarm at the slightest sound or running into a corner to hide from nothing in particular.

Bellicus folded his arms across his chest as he listened to the kobold's story, merely raising an eyebrow at Anton's barb. "I can't say I enjoy the thought of walking into a kobold warren, but if they're even half as cowardly as this one, then there's nothing to fear. Very well, Meepo, you will lead us to your chieftain, Yusdrayl. But know that should this be a trap, I will be displeased. Very displeased." He holds the kobold's gaze with a stern gaze until the cowardly creature breaks eye contact.

Leynus looks on at Akshara clambering all over Elion, amused. He glances towards Meepo at Bellicus' rather rude response. "Don't mind him, Meepo. He'll not skewer you, for fear of my wrath. I'm the frightful one, you see." He waggles his shortsword vaguely in Bellicus' direction as he says this. "Can you tell us anything of this Yusdrayl, before we go to parlay with him?"

FF 1-02

"Yusdrayl... she strong! Has magic powers from dragon ancestors! She is related to ancient dragons of this temple... that why she so mad at goblins!"

Elion manages to open the stone door, revealing a 10-foot chamber hewn from stone. It contains an upright keg fashioned of iron, now covered in rust. Similarly rusted pipes lead from the keg into the floor.

Meepo ducks away from anyone waving a sword around and says, "this way, this way! Follow Meepo!" But then the stone door swings open, revealing the keg. Meepo's eyes widen and he slowly walks over to peek around Elion's legs into the room. "Oooooh... we never manage to open fish door before!"

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

FF 1-02

Elion doesn't find anything that seems dangerous.

Rogue/2 (HP:13/13, AC15)

Does he find anything interesting?

FF 1-02

The keg seems to have some sort of liquid in it-- you can tell by moving it a just little and sloshing it around, but it's pretty firmly bound by the pipes connecting to the floor.
