"If you require healing, I suggest you heal up before we encounter another group of these hellknights, that being said, how likely is it that they would follow us through one of these doors? Even if it doesn't go where we are headed, it could provide us with a location to hide out for a short spell."

Janiven shakes her head. "I'd rather not stop. I don't know if they'd want to waste time searching side rooms, but I'd rather get back to the hideout quick. If you folks need to rest, though, I can go on ahead. Maybe lay a false trail."

"Let's just press on. I'm not sure what is going one, but I know I don't want to try to figure it out down here."

It was just one fight, we can handle it Kareta said, checking the nearest door and trying to open it. even if it did nearly kill some of us... she muttered to herself under her breath.


Kareta:
Inside the door, you see what appears to be a reasonably well-appointed room. The walls are clean, and there looks to be some sort of hanging on the back wall over a pair of sleeping pallets. The room must continue around a corner, because you can see the backs of a couple of paintings poking around the edge of the right-hand wall.

"If all the fights go this way, we will not be going much longer..." Harkon muses as he awaits the results of the room search.

"We cannot stand in the open for long, they may catch up to us." Lyall adds quietly, looking behind them, though his wolf-like vision was gone now.

Okay, this was unexpected.... Kareta muses, stepping carefully into the room, her hammer at the ready.

Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11

Assuming she doesn't see anybody She gingerly picks up what definitely appears to be a painting and turns it over.


Kareta steps into the room and picks up what looks like a painting. It turns out to be a portrait, oil on canvas, of a woman in an elegant blue dress. The picture has several holes chewed in it, but looks like the kind of thing that would hang in the house of a noble.

Kareta:
Around the corner in the room, there is a third pallet and a small-ish chest. The room looks like it hasn't been occupied in some time.

Somewhat reluctantly, Kareta agrees that this is not the time for treasure hunting. She sets the painting down and steps out of the room.

This isn't the right way she says to the others. but we should come back to it later when the heat dies down. Let's mark it and try the other door.


Behind the other door is a short passage that dead ends in a rusty ladder leading up to a round metal plate some distance above you.

Either this is our stop, or a very bad idea... Kareta muses out loud. Janiven, is this the way to go?

"Why does it have to be one way or the other, just because it might not be our stop doesn't mean it's a bad idea, it might be a shortcut to the surface." Lyall adds.

They managed to pinch us before, Kareta replied. probably had patrols on the street above trying to enter the sewers through manholes ahead of us, and one of them got lucky. Auriona, take a peek topside and see if you can spot any Hellknights or Dottari without being spotted.


"This isn't the way up. There would have been a marker pointing down this passage. I think we should keep moving. Better chance that they can't get ahead of us that way." Janiven's voice is growing strained, and she looks down both directions of tunnel, trying to see if anybody is following.

"Leave the door open, perhaps we can at least convince our pursuers that we went up this way." Lyall suggests as he joins Janiven in looking to see if they are still being followed. Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 I see nothing.

"I agree with lyall on this. We should follow Miss Janiven and move quickly. I'll scout ahead if that would make everyone feel better?"

Auriona takes one of her cures and drinks it, motioning that she is ready to go.

The group continues on, leaving the door to the surface ladder open to try and confuse any pursuit. Auriona scouts ahead, and several times leads them down side tunnels away from noises that sound like approaching Hellknights. After another 20 minutes of travel, following the markers on walls and floor, she stops. Ahead is a T-junction, with what looks like an old table crossing from your current path to the far side.

Auriona:
From up ahead, you can hear the sound of something scurrying and breathing. Whatever it is doesn't sound like a Hellknight patrol. It sounds like something smaller than a Hellknight, but big enough that it definitely isn't a normal rat. A door opens, then shuts.

GM Dice:

"Let's investigate, better than standing here, looking at each other..." Harkon grins.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16


Lyall and Harkon both see the faint outlines of a sword-like shape on the floor. From this angle, the best guess is that it points toward the left-hand passage, past the door Auriona mentioned.

"I'm always in the mood for a good ambush, as long as I am the one ambushing." Lyall says with a chuckle, his claws at his side. "There was a sword here it seems, my guess is it pointed left."

As the group moves closer to the door, Harkon, Ignatius, and Lyall can all hear the sounds of something scrabbling against rock on the other side of the door. There is also the low murmur of a high-pitched voice coming from behind the door.

"I think that there is someone behind that door..."

The high pitched voice on the other side of the door stops, although the scrabbling sounds continue.

"Does anyone have any suggestion for group tactics?"

"Well, the sword pointed past the door, we don't really have to go see what is on the other side of this door, but if we did, my suggestion would be try to stay alive."

You're right, Kareta says, still trying to keep quiet. we can play after we're not being chased by Hellknights. Lead on, and let's keep a rear guard in case whoever's in here gets cute.


From beyond the door, the high pitch voice resumes amidst continued clattering and scrabbling. Although you can't quite make it out, it sounds like some sort of tune.

Moving on, or investigating?

"Both good points, but there may be aid behind the door as well. Either way, let make a decision."

"I made my point, I will follow whatever decision is made."


Janiven pushes past you all and begins to continue down the tunnel. "Whichever way you go, don't get caught. Morosino will help to guide you. I'll see you at the hideout." With that, she disappears in the darkness ahead of you all, moving at a quick lope.

Kareta smirks. And there's our answer. Let's go! Shouldering her hammer, she takes off after Janiven.

What answer, she said "Whichever way you go, don't get caught". You people should have your ears checked.

"Looks like a decision has been reached..." Harkon winks at Morosino and sets off after the others.


Onward and upward

Chasing after Janiven, the party continues on its journey through the sewers. Several more encounters hinder your progress, most notably when Janiven has to detour around a faster way through the sewers to bypass a group of skeletons guarding something down here.

After the better part of a day, you're all getting tired when you reach a marker pointing straight at a rusted ladder leading out of the sewer. You all follow her up, and find yourselves in a back alley. A short distance away is a boarded up door. Once all are out of the sewers and the trap door is lowered back into place, Janiven goes over and knocks on the door.

The door is opened by a nervous man with a lantern. His face breaks into a grin when he sees Janiven, and they both hurry you all inside. There are half a dozen individuals inside in addition to yourselves, Janiven, and Morosino. The building appears to be a semi-restored temple, although all the windows and doors appear to be sealed and blocked shut.

Janiven turns to you. "It's been a long run. Morosino will show you where to wash up and rest, and where to get some food. You'll be safe here. We'll do introductions in the morning." With that, she bids you goodnight.

Harkon follows Morosino to his assigned room, looking forward to lying down for the night.


Male Human Wizard 1,

Filthy and exhausted, Ignatius stumbles in a daze to his room. Uses a few castings of prestidigitation to clean himself up and then collapses into unconsciousness.
