Let's roll for new initiatives then. You'll need either Climb or Acrobatics checks to get to the bottom of the cavern (the Climb DC is 10).
With low-light vision Vug sees well enough to take a pot shot at the grimlocks at the opposite end of the cavern, if you like.
Friar Feres
Vug laughs as she sees Valgrim charge in. "Well, that's one way to do it, I guess. But some day he won't be coming back, I f-fear..."
"I'll do all in my power to make sure that day is not today," Feres responds to Vug's comment as the stout priest rushes to follow behind Valgrim, choosing to climb down to the bottom of the cavern rather than jumping off of the ledge as the dwarf ranger did.
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Climb check: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Friar Feres
Just to reiterate - Spells in Effect:
Party: Bless - +1 morale bonus to attack rolls and saves vs. fear effects. Duration 3 minutes.
Valgrim: Protection from Evil - +2 deflection bonus to AC and +2 resistance bonus to saves vs. evil creatures, plus additional effects. Duration 3 minutes.
Feres: Shield of Faith - +2 deflection bonus to AC (Feres' total AC is 18). Duration 3 minutes.
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Cooler heads prevail as Valgrim moves to the edge of the pit and then climbs down as his action this round.
Climb check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Vug Vang
Vug throws a stink bomb at a convenient cluster of grimlocks.
I can't see the map at work, but hopefully there's a group of 3+ grimlocks that she can target.
attack (add range modifier penalties as necessary): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 1 = 24
damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 2) + 3 = 10, 5 splash damage + nauseate (DC 14 Ref/Fort)
Black Tom
Vulcan delays as Bubba draws his bow and Feres and Valgrim climb down the slope. Vug tosses a stink bomb at the cluster of grimlocks at the far end of the cavern. Two of them collapse, retching violently, while the third advances with his longspear.
The two other grimlocks retaliate with thrown javelins, but they clatter harmlessly off the wall. The redheaded grimlock casts a spell.
Your turn. New map.
Friar Feres
Not yet - I have to get closer to do what I had in mind. But I do have another little surprise that might be useful.
Round Two:
Seeing the redheaded grimlock going through the motions of spellcasting, Feres withdraws a scroll and begins to read the mystical words inscribed on the parchment in an attempt to summon a manifestation of Sarenrae's favored weapon - the scimitar - to attack the spellcaster.
Move action to retrieve scroll of Spiritual Weapon. Standard action to read scroll to activate the magic and summon a scimitar of force to attack the grimlock spellcaster. Not sure of the caster level of the scroll, so here's a caster level check to see if I cast it successfully (DC=scroll's caster level + 1): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7. EDIT: Hopefully whoever scribed this scroll was 7th level or lower!
If the spell is cast successfully, the spiritual scimitar appears in square AD-18 and can make an attack this round using my BAB and Wisdom modifer as its attack bonus (it also has the same threat range and critical modifiers as a real scimitar). The duration is 1 round per level (I'm assuming the caster level of the scroll).
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 (force damage)
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Valgrim moves to W16 and as a standard action, cleaves the 2 grimlocks with power attack.
Attack #1 on X16: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Damage: 1d12 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Attack #2 on X17: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Damage: 1d12 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Confirmation roll on critical: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14...probably not!
AC is 18 this round.
Black Tom
Just some clarifications: the barbarian grimlock is dead. Those that survive are just normal grimlocks (except the redheaded spellcasters). The caster level on the scroll will be 3 unless I stated otherwise, and the redheaded one is standing on a 10 feet ledge at the back of the cave.
Vug's and Bubluka's arrows go wide, but Valgrim hews down both grimlocks, while Feres's ghostly scimitar bounces off the grimlock's thick hide. Vulcan delays.
The two grimlocks below the ledge are still busy retching, while the priest casts Hold Person on Valgrim (Will 16 negates) as the last grimlock moves in for the kill, hitting Valgrim for 6 points of damage.
Your turn.
Friar Feres
Just a reminder: If Valgrim fails the save, his Protection from Evil spell allows him to immediately make another save with a +2 morale bonus using the same DC as the original since Hold Person is an enchantment [compulsion] effect. (That does, of course, assume that the grimlock spellcaster is evil, but I think that is a foregone conclusion.)
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Valgrim Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9...failure..DM, let me know if I get a second save due to Protection from Evil.
Friar Feres
Round Three:
Seeing Valgrim wounded, Feres moves forward and slashes his scimitar at the grimlock that attacked his friend.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Up on the ledge, Feres' spiritual scimitar attacks the grimlock priest.
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 (force damage)
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Valgrim's second Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12...failure, he is held.
Then on his turn, as his full-round action, Valgrim attempts another Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20..success!
Black Tom
Vug's arrow strikes true as does Feres, while Valgrim shrugs off the spell. Bubba's arrow and Feres's scimitar bounce off.
The grimlock strikes Valgrim again for another 6 points of damage, while the spellcaster retaliates, summoning a ghostly greataxe to strike Feres, but it goes wide. The two other grimlocks are still disoriented from Vug's stink bomb.
You are up.
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Valgrim takes out his anger on the grimlock attacking him and then moves 6 squares toward the priest:
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Friar Feres
Please note that Feres moved forward next to Valgrim in Round Three - likely to square W-17.
Round Four:
(Assuming that Valgrim dropped the grimlock he attacked and has moved to either square AB-18 or AB-19...) Feres steps up behind Valgrim and - with a quick prayer to Sarenrae - places his hand of the dwarf's shoulder to channel the power of the Healing Flame to mend some of the ranger's wounds.
Move action to square AA-18. Standard action to burn Magic Weapon to spontaneously cast Cure Light Wounds on Valgrim:
Cure Light Wounds on Valgrim: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Up on the ledge, Feres' spiritual scimitar attacks the grimlock priest one last time before winking out of existence.
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Spiritual Weapon (Scimitar) Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 (force damage)
Black Tom
Valgrim kills the grimlock and advances on the priest, who is standing on a 10 feet high ledge at the far end of the cavern. Feres heals some of Valgrim's wounds as Vug's arrow hits the priest.
Bubba and the ghostly scimitar miss and Vulcan delays.
The two grimlocks recover and try to stab Valgrim and Feres with their longspears, while the translucent greataxe continues to harry Feres. You easily parry, though.
Then the priest casts a spell, conjuring a ringing noise that makes Valgrim's greataxe shudder uncontrollably, on the verge of breaking. Shatter. Will 16 negates.
Your turn.
Valgrim Twin-Axe
Valgrim Will save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8..failure!
Valgrim shrugs as he sees his greataxe shatter. He then pulls out his dwarven waraxe as a move action, takes a 5' step to AB18 and swings but misses.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Friar Feres
Round Six:
Feres clasps his holy symbol and calls upon the grace of his Goddess to channel healing energies into Valgrim and himself, while excluding the red-headed grimlock priest and one of the grimlock spearmen from Sarenrae's radiance.
Standard action to Channel Energy to heal, which does not provoke AoO. Excluding grimlock priest and grimlock in square AB-17 with Selective Channeling.
Channel Energy (Healing): 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Channels Used Today: 4
Spells in Effect:
Party: Bless - +1 morale bonus to attack rolls and saves vs. fear effects.
Valgrim: Protection from Evil - +2 deflection bonus to AC and +2 resistance bonus to saves vs. evil creatures, plus additional effects.
Feres: Shield of Faith - +2 deflection bonus to AC (Feres' total AC is 18).
Valgrim Twin-Axe
"Bad move, Dorothy!", Valgrim mutters, as the red-headed grimlock comes within reach. Valgrim rages and cleaves, attacking first the grimlock in front of him and then the redheaded grimlock!
Grimlock: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Damage: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Red-headed grimlock: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Damage: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
AC this round is 18.
1 round of rage left for the day.
Black Tom
Valgrim drops another grimlock and wounds the redheaded cleric severely. The two survivors move to flank Valgrim and both hit for a total of 13 points. The translucent axe keeps harrying Feres but clangs against his shield. Vulcan's beam fizzles pitifully and Vug's arrow goes wide, as Bubba approaches with a face that means business.
At close quarters you see that the red-headed grimlock's eyes are actually sewn on and unseeing. Heaven knows where he got them.
Your turn.
