Male Human Sorceror (Stormborn) 18

Realizing that the tree presented an increasing danger, but that the storms he essentially ignored were about to engage Vug, Vulcan chooses to strike.

Eyes flashing, the sorceror gestures in the direction of the tree, a massive thundebolt crashing down into it's midst with a thunderous roar.

Thunderbolt.: 15d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4, 3, 5, 6, 6, 4, 6, 4, 1, 2, 3, 2, 2) = 57 half electricity/ half sonic. A Reflex save DC 25 for half.


It has Spell Resistance. I think Vulcan's bonus to his penetration roll is +15 (unless he is using his Empower Spell-like Ability). Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I roll for this one to keep things moving.

Vulcan's Spell Penetration: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30

The sorcerer is surprised to feel his spell almost deflected by the tree's resistance but ends up pleased as the magic's power punches through the defenses. Even so, Vulcan takes note that the lightning just plays harmlessly across the surface of the scorched bark while the sonic energy has a greater effect than expected and tears holes into the trunk.

Tree's Reflex Save: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32

The tree topples from the force of Vulcan's magic, tearing it's roots free in an explosion of dirt. As clods of detritus collapse back into the hole vacated by the plant you can almost hear the earth sigh in relief at being free from such an abomination. Your momentary elation evaporates as the tree's decent is arrested by the branches of the canopy as they sink into the ground. At first, you think the branches are collapsing under the massive weight but quickly come to understand that they are folding, not breaking, to absorb the impact. No longer do the branches resemble anything plant-like instead they take on a distinctively arachnoid air. The colossal trunk raises up in an obscene imitation of an abdomen. Flickering motes of blood-red lightning dance in the cracks of its bark and leg joints. The flickering red light dims from several of the rents, left in it's bark by Vulcan, as the holes knit back together before your eyes.
It lifts it's forelegs menacingly, red electricity arcs and courses down them converging into a point in midair in front of the monstrosity. In a blink, the ball of electricity glows so brilliantly that its hard to look at just before it releases into the biggest blood-red lightning bolt this world has ever seen...KRACKA-THOOM!!!

The Chain Lightning bolt travels from the tree and into Bublaka before arcing to both Valgrim and Ferez. Bublaka's reflex save is 23. Valgrim's and Ferez's is 21 for half damage.
Chain Lightning Damage:
20d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 6, 4, 5, 5, 3, 4, 6, 1, 1, 4) = 72

As the spots fade and your vision returns you realize that Vug Vang has landed directly in front and underneath the monstrous thing!

Hope that get's the adrenaline flowing :) Your all up! Vug Vang has already gone. Vulcan is up again but his action probably won't effect whatever the rest of you are doing.

As a side note: Valgrim, you realize now what made those holes in the ground.
Those with high spellcraft: That lightning could have reached the very edge of this clearing. This thing was allowing you/luring you to get close! "Welcome to my Parlor," said the spider to the fly...

Yeah, no problem for a warrior of your caliber. 30' foot reach, which by the way Vug Vang just flew through without getting attacked...just sayin.

Vulcan: In case your wondering. Vug flew to the side of the whirlwind. She has a singular goal but she's not mindless, just terribly distraught and drawn to the tree.

Valgrim: You and Bublaka basically go at the same time (though you now edge him out slightly do to your Cat's Grace). He indicated he maybe casting Dimension Door this round which will take you anywhere you want to be and still leave you with an action.

Bublaka reels for a moment from the electricity, but changes his tune - literally - to inspire greatness in Valgrim, Friar, and himself.

Inspire Greatness (Su):
You can use your performance to inspire greatness in yourself or up to 2 willing allies within 30 feet, granting extra fighting capability. To inspire greatness, all of the targets must be able to see and hear you. A creature inspired with greatness gains 2 bonus Hit Dice (d10s), the commensurate number of temporary hit points (apply the target's Constitution modifier, if any, to these bonus Hit Dice), a +2 competence bonus on attack rolls, and a +1 competence bonus on Fortitude saves. The bonus Hit Dice count as regular Hit Dice for determining the effect of spells that are Hit Dice dependent. Inspire Greatness is a mind-affecting ability and it relies on audible and visual components.

Casting a quick spell, Bublaka creates a glowing portal in midair and the three friends leap through, reappearing close to the animate tree.

Depends on whether he wanted to drop his initiative below Ferez's from now on. If he just readied (meaning he goes back to Initiative 10 next round) then just a standard action. If he delayed then he goes on initiative 4 from now on but gets a full action.

Sorry, Valgrim, I misremembered and didn't go back and verify. I kind of need all the help I can get if I'm going to be this close, though...

Bubba has made all his actions for the round, but I think Friar might still have some, like Valgrim did.


The trio step from the magic portal directly underneath the towering tree. The smell of burnt wood assaults your senses and your hair begins to pick up static from just being this close. Valgrim immediately begins hewing into the underbelly of the colossal trunk. His first two strikes leave deep rents that unleash red lightning up his blade and arms but his final two strikes fail to find purchase.

First two strikes do 53 damage. He does not bypass the DR 15. Crit does not confirm. He avoids 2d10 ⇒ (10, 7) = 17 of electricity damage thanks to his wise cleric :)

Valgrim: Would you mind breaking down your AC and it's sources like you did your bonus to hit? Why does acrobatics add to AC? I won't ask you to always do this, but as I am new to this group just wrapping my head around how your characters work. Thanks.

Vulcan focuses on the tree amidst the howling storm. With a roar he begins casting , opening with a rapid chant that unleashes a stream of razor like shards of ice, glittering with the beauty of snowflakes.

Even as the others press the assault he conjures up a ray of unbridled elemental energy, seeking out the creature's weaknesses.

Elemental assessor: Fire, Electricity, and Cold(Resistance 30) do nothing. Acid works normally. Nice spell btw, I've never seen it before.
Takes 20 acid damage

A powerful blast of elemental force strikes the tree forming a sheen of ice crystals across it's bark, but as quickly as the ice forms it is melted into steam by the electrically heated tree. A second blast from the sorcerer strikes where the first one failed and leaves instead a caustic slime that burns away the wood underneath very effectively.
Turning to face it's dwarven assailant the tree's front spidery legs slice sideways with tremendous force catching the ranger's blade between them as they clash. There is a shriek of protesting metal that causes you all to wince but the sword manages to hold together.
This is followed by a sudden flash of lightning as the still grouped trio take the brunt of another electrical attack.

Quickened Lightning Bolt: 10d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 5, 2, 4, 3, 6, 4, 3) = 40 DC 20 Reflex for half. Valgrim, Ferez, and Bublaka need to save.

1st Sunder Attack: 1d20 + 43 ⇒ (19) + 43 = 62
Damage: 4d10 + 16 ⇒ (9, 4, 4, 6) + 16 = 39
2nd Sunder Attack: 1d20 + 43 ⇒ (6) + 43 = 49
Damage: 4d10 + 16 ⇒ (7, 1, 9, 7) + 16 = 40

39 damage to Valgrim's weapon in one blow. Tree has Improved Sunder so no AOO. Ok, I believe if I am adding this up right than Valgrim gets +6 to CMD against sunder because it is an Impervious weapon bringing his CMD to 51 for this. Second attack misses. Crit succeeds and confirms. Weapon Hardness is Admantine 20+12 for weapon enhancement doubled by Impervious. Weapon hitpoints are base 10+3adamantine+60enhancement doubled by Impervious. 73 hitpoints total. Takes 39-32 damage=7 damage. Valgrim please double check my math here as this got very complicated.

Math looks good. My only issue would be that a sunder attempt cannot crit, since in the Core Rulebook, chapter 7, pg. 174 under Breaking and Entering: "Immunities: Objects are immune to nonlethal damage and critical hits." So the blade would take only 7 damage (39-32 DR).


Yes, you are correct. I extended your Resist Energy: Electricity to include your blade. Otherwise it would have taken: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 1) = 9 halved. That's just a side note FYI since you would notice the electricity playing over the blade.

Bub, like you said/wrote, sonic attacks are a good thing. You may want to withdraw and pepper this thing from 60' with 3 deafening song bolts per round (ranged touch, no SR and no save) to avoid a punishing AoO and staying out of its 30' reach, while I occupy it with melee attacks, while it tries to break my falchion. Just a thought, because with its DR, I doubt your whip is going to do much damage to the tree.
EDIT: Even if you withdraw, you're going to take AoO, because it threatens 30'.

Unless he thinks it's pointless (See Spellcraft check below), this is Friar's action. GM, let me know if this will not work. Crushing despair is a compulsion effect so I must assume the secondary effect of the song is one also.

As a swift action (does not provoke AoO), he casts Grace on himself and moves 60' toward Vug (no AoO due to Grace spell). When he reaches Vug, he casts defensively Communal Protection from Evil on himself and Vug and touches the alchemist. "Snap out of it!"

Spellcraft check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Protection from Evil: Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person. This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. I'd say that absolutely does give her a second save. Go ahead and roll it Vug. The +2 from the Protection From Evil and the -2 from the Crushing Despair cancel each other out so just roll at your normal will save bonus.

I don't think our dear bard's action will affect mine, so Valgrim goes on full attack, choosing dodge bonus again from Blessing, while he still can with his falchion.

Definitely, I left it as is once I realized I hadn't done that part of it either. So still only 7 damage. You'll see it's been edited to reflect that in the above posts also.

Valgrim: Does your raging and change from defensive attack change your CMD at all?

Bublaka: Ouch, that's gonna hurt it. Automatically goes through it's mighty SR and everything. Very nice spell. Not sure how you deafen a tree but it's gotta hear somehow, right?

Just making sure that you didn't think you needed to spend them just to get the first new save. Your action will take place on your initiative next round, so hold that thought. That's fine as long as Vulcan is ok with being botted. If not, please feel free to retcon your action Vulcan. I am also a little more hesitant in very challenging situations like this to bot anyone but you all seem to be doing fine for the time being :)

The tree definitely feels the powerful onslaught unleashed upon it by your group. Huge rents and holes in it's trunk leak red lightning as they slowly begin to close back up. The tree slams down it's trunk upon Valgrim, who is merrily hewing away at it's underbelly, sending him flying to land in a heap 10' feet away from it. It skitters (can something colossal really skitter?) 50' feet away in the opposite direction from the frothing dwarf. Lastly it unleashes another bolt of lightning at Friar Ferez. While you doubt it feels anything like fear you distinctly get the impression it is wary about being so close to all of you anymore.

Quickened Lightning Bolt: 10d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3, 1, 3, 5, 5, 2, 3, 4) = 36 Only Ferez needs to save.

Awesome Blow: 1d20 + 41 ⇒ (4) + 41 = 45

An AoO from Bubba is a waste of time - I cannot beat the DR. Oh, and I forgot every single bonus for my attack rolls last time, so I hope they hit despite me.

Bubba moves toward the tree (he needs to be within 60'), maintaining his song, and casts the song bolt again. He uses the magic of the whip to empower the spell.
