Pentos hesitates as Lilith speaks to him, a sneer already forming on his lips, but something the elf says to him gives him pause. His face goes blank, and he simply nods before moving to join the others.

So we're losing the light, we have to go now if we're to save the man! declares Hawk

Right, let's be moving! declares Hawk as he sets off down the beach towards the village.

OK, so everyone's next posts should contain a perception roll along with an appropriate stealth check if they are sidling up to the village all sneaky like. If you are hanging back to wait for the gate to be opened then please post that so I've a clear idea who is where!

Melo moves over to Cyn in his bird form she towers over him but the connection is still there. "Stay with Valex ok, guard him he will bring you to me." He tells her and she acknowledges in her own way moving over to Valex slumping down at his feet. "She'll keep you safe please do the same for her."

"This is it i'll take the gate, It will be open by the time you all get there and will stay open." He flutters his wings again, the anticipation of it all catching up with him. "If we have anything else to say now's the time."

When everything's said he sets off flying towards the village going high very high to get an advantage to drop in from above, spotting the gate early and keeping his eyes on it.

Knowing that her spells will likely be needed Lilith moves up with the first group as quietly as possible. She smiles inwardly at her luck in somehow reaching Pentos and does not know if she should hope he is needed or not needed.

Flynn soars up into the sky, using the light of the village to guide him and Skyfall and as he watches the others close to the edge of the village he swoops down toward the hut he saw the guards lead the prisoner into.

Although feeling more than a little nervous, Lenneth hands Aura off to Tabitha and proceeds towards Whitecliff along with the others. As they approach and the advance party continues onward, she hangs back with Valex and the others. She glances over her shoulder where Indigo trails along somewhere behind them in the dim light.

"Be watchful. If things go wrong, run if you can or hide - if they'll eat people then they'll definitely have no problems eating a cat."

Perception (Indigo Isn't in Reach): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

"Someone will lose an eye if they try."

Indigo trails some distance behind the group as they approach Whitecliff, not particularly worried about staying right behind them since he knows he will catch up to Lenneth and the others soon enough.

Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Indigo also has low-light vision, in case it makes a difference.


Melo and Flynn are as ghosts in the darkened sky. All eyes inside the village seem intent on the blazing fire underneath the bubbling cauldron.

Lilith slowly approaches the gate as Lenneth, Indigo, Lachen and Valex hold back and wait for the gate to be opened.

Melo and Flynn quickly assess the area and are sure no-one is looking around the southern gate, the first group of guards is still posted to the northern gate, and the roaming patrol has stopped to talk to them before they begin another circuit, there is easily several minutes or more to spare.

At their 'all clear' signal, Lilith moves up to the gate. Then freezes. The faintest touch of wind rustling the grass, yet not that middle bit despite the surroundings moving... there, a glint of metal! Looking around for other surprises, Lilith determines there are close to a dozen or more beartraps scattered all around the outside of the gate, well hidden with grass and dirt. She would not have wanted to stroll through here without taking the time to place her feet correctly. In fact, she can see a thin line trailing up from the floor towards the top of the gate. A rudimentary alarm if the traps are triggered perhaps? Now she's closer, she can also see the gate is barred from the inside by a heavy beam, there's no way to open it from this side.

Flynn dives towards the hut the prisoner was placed in. The roof is slanted and could provide cover if he lands the side facing away from the fire. But the roof is just poorly maintained thatch and may not hold the weight. It's the roof or the alley behind the house, and he has to pick fast as two guards break away from the cook fire and start heading in the direction of the hut...

Is whisper with us? Lilith would have her with her if possible.

Lilith will trust her perception to move forward, marking the location of each trap along her direct path with a light X in the dirt. If she gets to a place where its risky to advance because of the trap, and she cannot loop around it she will dimensionally step past it.

After examining the area on the inside of the gate and finding it safe she will shift through the gate and look more closely at the bar and the alarm string.

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29


Lilith checks behind her, Whisper is on her tail like a ghost. Just as Lilith is about to shift past the gate, see sees it, just beyond the gate is a concealed pit trap. Whisper's hand grabs Lilith's sleeve in warning, in what would have been an instant too late had Lilith not already stopped herself just shy of porting through the gate.

The pit runs the breadth of the gate, and judging from the weeds and blown sand accumulated at the bottom of the gate, it deosn't look like this gate is used as anything other than a trap for the unwary seeking a covert entry in to the compound.

Whisper shrugs and points at the wall, making 'hand over hand' movements with her arms.

Nice.Beartraps... A sure way to injure and maim, without killing, so the flesh won't rot and the poor sod won't rise as a zombie. If only Lenn listened to me when I told her it was a stupid idea to attack this place!

Flynn glides down toward the roof but as he and Sky are about to land he pulls on her reign sharply. She recognises the command and pushes her wings forward in a gesture that to the untrained eye looks awkward and an ungainly, but he knows will help her hold this position - he doesn't like the look of that thatched roof.

With short, powerful beats of her wings but clipped to avoid making any noise, Skyfall hovers just above the roof and Flynn strains to peer over for the presence of guards or townsfolk.

Lenneth squints in the fading light as Lilith makes her way over to the gate...then suddenly stops, apparently communicating with Whisper although the witch can't see her. Though her sense of uneasiness remains, there hasn't been any noise or anything else to indicate that they've been spotted.

Suddenly, something else occurs to her. It was certainly possible that Whitecliff might house a mage or two, like Lachen had warned. Lilith and Whisper hadn't tripped any magical alarms yet, but if there were any there...

Very quietly, she mutters a few words and then begins to scan what she can see for any signs of magical auras.

Casting Detect Magic, focusing on what she can see of the outer wall and gate.

Melo stays close to Flyn as they approach the village then watching as he banks down towards the hut. Melo then focuses on the south gate, he needs to get it open for the others.

He moves within 20 foot of the gate and then scans the area.


For now Skyfall's presence doesn't appear to have alerted anyone, but Flynn's luck can't hold out forever. He can just make out two guards standing by the only door in to the hut. They don't seem to be expecting trouble.

Lenneth moves up closer to the southern gate, and as she casts her spell, a faintly glowing aura springs in to life along the top of the gate.

Melo hovers just above the gate now, he can clearly see the bear traps Lilith has marked, and also the hidden pit on the other side of the gate.

Lenneth pales at the sight of the magical aura and quickly begins waving in an attempt to get Lilith's attention. She pantomimes the act of casting a spell and then points to the top of the gate, drawing her finger in a line across it before shaking her head and then shrugging.

I have no idea if I need to make a roll for this or not! Also, are Lilith and Whisper the only ones who can see the traps near the gate?

Lilith ponders what to do now that she knows the group is not getting through the south gate. Motioning for Whisper to follow she quickly heads back to inform the others. Oh her way she sees Lenneth waving and thinks she understands her concern.

Spotting the traps and seeing Lilith move back away from the the game, Melo moves to look for Flyn he will need to know the plan has changed.

Moving towards the hut Melo spots Skyfall and then the guards outside the hut. Seeing the plan slowly falling apart he knows he has to get the guards away to give Flyn any hope of breaking the man free. Swooping down he moves down the street spots a few empty buildings.

Landing inside one derelict build a few doors down from the hut with the prisoner and starts to flap about knocking over chairs and smashing into the roof trying to make as much noise as he can.

Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

Basically trying to 'act' as a trapped bird hoping it will pull the guards away to see what it is.

Great thinking Melo!

Flynn looks up as the eagle cuts through the air toward one of the huts. As the ruckus from within erupts a wide grin breaks out on his face.

Clever... very clever, Melo. he whispers.

Fiendish, I'm going to wait to see what happens but will be aiming to take advantage of this distraction.


Lenneth: Lilith and Whisper were the only ones close enough to detect them, however Lilith has marked the beartraps so any of your group will know where they are

Lilith is sure that her and Whisper's presence has gone unnoticed as the duo pull back to rejoin the others.

Just then a commotion breaks out inside the compound, though it's difficult to make out exactly what might be happening.

Melo:
Hopping inside one seemingly unused house with no door, it is easy to knock over the rudimentary chair and batter your wings against the ramshackle walls, causing quite a racket. Keeping one ear towards any approaching humanoids, you think you do hear some footsteps coming closer. Your ruse appears to be working

Flynn:
You see the two guards posted outside the prisoner's hut react instantly to Melo's ruse, they look perplexed and cautious, taking deliberate steps towards the building around the corner that all the noise is coming from. The two guards crossing the courtyard towards the prisoner's hut are also drawn to the noise. It looks like both pairs will converge on Melo's hut in about 30 seconds. In the meantime, the prisoner's hut is unguarded.

EVERYONE: It is about now, maybe an hour after you ate that fish stew, that you begin to feel a bit... nauseous...

OK everyone who ate the fish stew please make a Fortitude check DC 15, failure means 1d3 CON damage and 1 STR damage as stomach pangs and intestinal cramps do their best to cripple you. Whether you pass or fail, you are currently shaking and sweating and trying very hard not to vomit. This is the equivalent of being fatigued, and will vanish once you have had a good night's sleep

Grimacing suddenly against the stabbing pains in his stomach, Flynn shakes the sweat out of his eyes and carries on regardless. Seeing the guards moving off he encourages Skyfall to hop down in front of the hut and opens the door.

Lachen stays alert, after the bear traps, and watching Lenneth and the elf making strange moves to each other, the soldier tries to make sense of their sudden silly acts

Suddenly his stomach seems caught in a steel claw, and bile invade his mouth. Lachen barely manages not to throw up

Flapping about the room seems to have the desired effect as he hears the guards move closer to him. But is suddenly hit by cramps that force him to land on an unsteady chair.

Retching and shaking, he tries his hardest to keep up the roose and moves around on the floor flapping about.

Lenneth suddenly gasps as her stomach and intestines seem to wrench themselves into a big knot. She bites down on her lip until the need to vomit thankfully passes, but the feeling of weakness and nausea still remains.

Oh godsdammit, not now! she silently seethes, noting that the others with her seem similarly stricken.

Her attention is pulled away from her sudden gastrointestinal distress by the sudden sounds of commotion from within the compound. "Oh boy..." she whispers.

Indigo suddenly hunkers down into the grass, growing very, very still as pain and discomfort ripple through his little body. From up ahead, he can sense more than see that Lenneth and the others seem to be suffering from similar pains.

"It hurts...feel weak..."

Though his body doesn't reject the rotten food, he has to resist the instinctive urge to make it come up by chewing on the nearby grass.

Flynn: I made an Arnie reference in another game myself this week, so bravo ;p

Crouching in front of the door, Flynn has little difficulty untwisting the simple knotted rope acting as a lock. Pushing it open he comes face to face with the prisoner, who appears to have frred himself from the rope tying his hands and is standing there looking rather surprised the door has just opened itself. He frowns suspiciously at Flynn.

Melo hears guards approaching, and smells the fresh cut wood of their clubs in the air. They are almost upon him...

Those outside hear a questioning challenge from inside the compound, it's impossible to tell what's happening in there from out here though...

Hawk rushes forward to Lilith as she returns, one hand holding his stomach as his face looks one part concern and the other pain

What's wrong? We need to get in!

No way to get through the south gate. Lots of traps including a pit trap on the inside. It would be easier to make a hole in the fence. But that would bring the guard. I say walk in the main gate, in force.

If I remember right, Flynn put the bracelet Lenn gave him back on at some point after he'd taken it off. If so...

"Wait, what?" Lenneth gasps in alarm. "They're going to be expecting us to have that gate open! And they can't fight their way through all of those guards by themselves!"

She turns her head in the direction of the ruckus and attempts to reach Flynn through the shared connection of the bracelets. "Flynn, the south gate's just one big trap - magic at the top, bear traps out here and a pit trap inside! I don't think we can get it open! What do we do?"


Inside
The prisoner seems barely able to hide his shock as unexpected freedom is presented to him.

He nods once to Flynn and motions to the central hut. "I gots supplies and weapons in there. Gotta pick 'em up..."

The way is clear, at least for now, as Melo's distraction contines to focus the guard's attention elsewhere...

Outside
I'm by your side no matter what happens, but an assault like that is going to leave us with casualties, is there no other way?

Hawk desperately racks his brain.

If we can get their attention they can escape down the cliff! Might be dangerous but it's less so that storming the gates!

Whisper shakes her head and waves to get Lilith's attention, holding out rope and miming throwing it over the wall.

Pentos quietly volunteers his own suggestion

I, that is, I've magic enough to make a hole in the wall. A hole big enough for them to get out...

Robban stomps his feet

Whatever we do, if that gate isn't opening, we've got a friend stranded inside that nest of cannibals, we need to do something, anything now!

Flynn shakes his head quickly.

No! We've got to go now. We are going to the leader's hut after this but we can't do that whilst worrying about you getting grabbed again.

He hears Lenneth's voice inside his head then, the tone of urgency absolutely evident. He curses under his breath at the news.

If we can't get him out through the gate, he's got to go down the cliffs. I can do it safely, don't worry but you have GOT to get in here. Isn't there some magic you can use, or can't Valex disarm that trap?

Will hang on here for a few more seconds GM, but if it sounds like the guards are making their way back we are going to have to go and Flynn is going to get the prisoner to head to the cliffs. There, he is going to force him to put on his Boots of the Cat (they might be a tight squeeze) and get him to climb. Even if he falls he will take minimum damage from it and hopefully will survive. That's the best plan I've got unless we can bypass that trap and will relay it to Lenneth.

Pentos, if you can do that then lets do it down by the south gate. That is where our people will be going anyway. Lilith looks to the others for agreement.

Melo will keep this up, but when he spots them or they seem to be moving in to confront him he will fly out(I hope there is an open window? he will smash it?) Then fly high out of sight and then meet up with Flyn.

"I guess there's nothing for it then!" Lenneth whispers back. "Blowing a hole in the wall is the quickest way and will hopefully catch them by surprise - then Flynn can bring him through or they can go down the cliff, whichever seems quickest. He slips something he was holding away in to his clothes and then glances around as if looking for something.

Melo is barely able to get through the door as one of the guards steps in to the threshold and makes a grab, but misses and swears aloud

Hawk gives Pentos as assessing look, before shrugging

Pentos moves back out towards the southern gate, Hawk shadowing him a few steps behind.

Melo counts four guards as he narrowly makes it out of the abandoned hut. You wouldn't want to catch this bird. He thinks to himself as he looks moves over towards the prisoners hut. I've got to warn Flyn about the gate, if they haven't gotten it open yet.

Whether Valex is able to disable the trap and we try climbing over the fence/gate or whether we let Pentos blow a hole in the wall, Lenn will follow at a bit of a distance at first. That way if they come under attack she'll hopefully be able to cover an escape using Swamp's Grasp or her Web spells.

Hand pressing his aching gut, Valex moves as quickly as he can to the gate and examines the magical trap.

Pentos moves forward, he seems focused and deliberate with a fixed stare. Lilith trails in his wake as he moves up and waits for Valex to try his hand.

Valex moves to the gate to examine the wards, and believing he has found the right rune to erase, move to do so...

...and nothing happens. Pentos looks between Lilith and Valex and shrugs, before turning and placing a hand on the wall, then intoning a string of haphazard syllables. There is a pressure in the air, the world grows quiet, then a resounding BOOM as the poorly joined wood explodes inwards, creating a gap at least 10 feet across. Pentos just stands there in the middle of the gap, as dust and splinters of dust rain down around him.

Inside
There is an earth-shattering BOOM from the southern end of the compound, and all the guards react in shock and reach for their weapons, running towards the disturbance.

Lenneth quickly backs away and readies her magic in preparation to web the opening once she has confirmation that Flynn, Melo, and the prisoner are either through or taking some other route out.

The explosion comes as a shock to Melo, as he instantly takes flight. fighting the urge to fly away from the village, he spots Flyn.

Flying down he lands on the floor. "Flyn what was that?! We have to move the whole village is going to be at the south gate. The plan is done this isn't going to be easy anymore!"

Flyn then chants a few words and for a few moments a dark green light glows around him.

What the hell was that? Flynn thinks desperately as the explosion rips through the night sky.

He sees the avian form of Melo swoop down;

Melo, the guards are going to swarm that noise. We can head to the leaders Hut now and take advantage of the distraction or get back there and fight a retreat, I cant see us pushing through this without casualties. Your call.

He turns to the prisoner;
