Hmmm... In some cases, I think that might work. However, in this specific case, I don't think it would. Let me explain why.
First of all, for a lot of stuff there is a difference between figuring out how to disable something and figuring out how it works. For instance, I know that I can disable a cellphone by taking out its battery, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I know how to make it send a text message.
Secondly, in this case, the workings of the machine are all within the statue itself, so it isn't easy to study the design of the system to figure out how it works. I do think that having the disable device skill implies that you have an understanding about how most devices work (on a basic level), but if you are unsure how something works, you would most likely have to study its mechanical design in order to understand how it works.
Lastly, for complex systems, figuring out how they work seems to be more of a Knowledge (engineering) skill test to me. Whereas figuring out just how to break them so that they don't work anymore is a disable device test.
Luckily, however, Tessara seems to have very quickly figured it out, so we don't have to worry about it bogging down the story too much.

Haha, thanks!
For the record though, I am not one of those GMs that can't handle discussion. If you ever have a problem of how I rule something, please feel free to talk to me about it. I am happy to discuss something if you see it differently. And if I ever decide to make my decision final, I will clearly state that I am not open to discussion on it.

Voiceless, how is time being tracked here? If I take 20 on something, that is 2 minutes as opposed to 6 seconds. So, to move 60 feet is 4 minutes. I felt 4 minutes of 2 hours would be nominal, especially considering the results.
The statement "the orchestra makes it through a few classic Zobeck" makes me think some other method is being used. Just asking for clarification. Thanks.
The Voiceless
Yup, taking 20 to move 30 feet is roughly 2 minutes. However, the tunnel ended in a stairway that went down what felt like several stories (sorry, I don't know if I was clear enough on that in my post), so it took a while. Unless someone has some way of keeping track of time precisely though, things are going to be a little fluid, since our perception of time isn't perfect. A song length can fluctuate quite a bit, so they only help keep track of time to a certain extent.

Hey Vors,
I tend to follow the “Praise in Public, Criticize in Private” motto, but if you want to discuss this openly, I am fine with that too.
First of all, if you want to bring this discussion here, it is important that everyone knows what we are talking about, so here is the message I sent to Vors.
Hey Vors,
First of all, I would like to say thank you for getting so into the role playing aspect of the game! However, I have a request for you. I understand that your character is a bit of a "player". However, it is starting to come off as offensive. Could you tone down that side of your character so that everyone involved is comfortable? I think your character has a lot more depth and there are many other aspects you could bring out.
Thanks,
- Peter
Now, secondly, I would like to address your above post.
Voiceless, I somewhat take offense to the the PM you sent me. I have not been offensive to anyone. If anyone is offended by my presence they are a snowflake and I care not. Let's keep the cards on the table. Kill me if you think I err.
First of all, I am sorry if what I said didn’t come across well. I tried to phrase it clearly, but respectfully. To clarify, I am not offended by your presence. In fact, I quite enjoy having you as part of the game. However, I think it would make everyone have a better experience if we could focus more on respecting each other rather than roleplaying offensive character traits.
I am a bit confused as what you mean by “a snowflake”. I don’t think you mean unique, because I don’t think it is a unique thing to be concerned with the equal and decent treatment of women; everyone should be. I personally have taken offense to some of the comments your character has made, and I am not alone, so I don’t think it is a stretch to say that some comments have been offensive.
I am also concerned that you don’t care that your fellow players may have been offended. This is a team game and so we must strive to make it the best experience possible for everyone at the table; this is everyone’s responsibility. I strive to make my games a safe place for everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or any other factor.
We can’t change the past, but I hope we can agree to respect each other and move on instead of digging in our heels. I hope you feel comfortable with my suggestion and choose to continue playing in our campaign.

I rarely go to the page where the private messages are. Would have been weeks or months had you not told us to go there. Yeah, I would rather discuss all here. Thanks for that.
I had three guys review it and they all felt that I had not crossed the "offensive" line. I guess we are from different worlds. That being said I hate people like my character in real life and cringed as I posted what I believe you took to be offensive.
I'm glad you and I did not affect game play for the others. My concern is that I will offend again in a different way. I'll try to be especially careful in that regard. If anyone has a problem with my PC, please do not hesitate to call me out here in discussion. My skin is very thick, you will not hurt my feelings. We are here to play and have fun. That has been my intention all along.
Cassandra Cressen
Thank you, friends. She was a neighbor of mine who’d been in Hospice care for some time with advanced brain cancer, so thankfully it wasn’t anything sudden or unexpected. She made her preparations and we all got our chances to say goodbye long ago when she was still lucid, but it still doesn’t stop her passing from being a somber event.

So, there was a bit of groaning when I mentioned Roll20. That is totally fair, and I understand the frustration of having to make another account. So, I was wondering, what method do you guys prefer for mapping? I am in a game right now where we use Google Draw (which you don't need an account for) but I am not a huge fan of how our GM has to draw big blue squares over the parts that we don't have line of sight to. Have you guys used anything that you liked?

Soooo I just realized that I should be keeping an eye on the Discussion thread. My first PbP campaign and all, haha.
I'm totally fine with Roll20 for mapping, I run a campaign there and play in 2 others, and I've found the mapping software excellent. I do agree that we need tokens to help keep track of our current location for when it matters, though.

Dear friends,
I’m so sorry to let you down this way. My obsession with and addiction to online gaming has become something that is interfering with my professional and personal life. While this PBP campaign is certainly a low-commitment on its own, it’s one of many, and compounded with my binge-watching and binge-gaming is a symptom of a much larger problem that I have.
It’s because of all this that I’ve decided to greatly cut my media consumption. As such, I can no-longer adhere to posting here for my own physical and mental health. I sincerely hope you can understand, and I hope that my withdrawal does not hurt the campaign too badly.
Sincerely,
Tassadan

It's a shame to lose Cassandra, but your mental health comes first. Hopefully Tessara will be able to fill the gap a bit with her knowledge skills.
The Voiceless, would you like to handle Cassandra's depature in-world, or just handwave it? And what will happen to the clue she found, that gives a +3 bonus on a single skill check made to find texts?

Hey everyone, real life has caught up with me, and I'm going to have to bow out of this campaign. I've had a lot of fun, but I can't keep up with this as much as I'd like to, and I don't want everyone waiting on me when I can't be consistent. Thanks Voiceless for a fun time, and I hope everyone else enjoys themselves without me! Ta-ta!
The Voiceless
Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I realize that I am not keeping up with my end of the bargain here and posting once a day. Work has gotten crazy recently (gotta love year end!). Fear not though! I am pivoting to try and post more at home instead of just at work. I hope you have the patience to stick with me, and I apologize for any frustration.

I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow, and won't be able to post until January 2nd. The Voiceless, feel free to run Tessara as an NPC until then, she'll be trying to figure out the swarm's nature and vulnerabilities with Iliyana and the other PCs, and formulate a plan of counterattack against it before her spell runs out.

Just curious as to the state of the game; I'm getting the feeling that we kinda botched the job, so to speak - does this, coupled with the loss of a sizeable chunk of our initial party, throw a big enough wrench into the story that makes it a little difficult to proceed?
I'm okay either way, just curious.
