The Voiceless Presents: Library of the Lion (Inactive)

Game Master Peter Maidens

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Important Note:
This is the first PbP that I will be GMing. I have done my fair share of reading up on the topic of GMing a PbP, but life experience has taught me that practice never works out as it should in theory. In that light, I wish to start small. To make my life easier and to increase the chances that everyone has as much fun as possible, I expect everyone who participates has read the following guides.

1. DH's Guide to Play By Post gaming
2. Building a Better Doomed Hero: Painlord's Advanced Play-by-Post Play

Now, it’s time to get to the juicy details of the game. If you are still interested in joining me, please read on below.

About the game

We will be playing Library of the Lion, a Pathfinder Society scenario. However, we will not be playing it for credit in PFS. I chose this scenario because it is combat light (which I think works well for PbP). Take that into consideration when you are creating your characters.

For your characters, please create them as follows:
- Use Paizo published sources only (sorry, but I am trying to keep things simple)
- Level 1
- 20 point buy
- Non-evil
- 2 traits
- Any class
- Most races (must be welcome at a ball)

I will be closing the recruitment in the evening on September 18th.

Roll20 will be the mapping software that I will use. Since there is not a lot of combat, I will still use Roll20 as an aid to help everyone understand the area that we are in.

As a player, I expect you to post once a day unless you have let the group know that you will be unable to. That will keep the game moving and keep everyone engaged. I realize that real life comes up and can prevent you some days, but if you go silent for too long, I will either end up playing for you or you will become an NPC. This is a short scenario, so hopefully everyone will be able to stay around. I will check the thread multiple times per day in case any input from me is needed.

There are also some things you should know about me. First of all, as I mentioned earlier, this will be my first PbP game as a GM. I have GMed face-to-face before, but never in this format. Secondly, having two kids means that I do all of my posting while at work or after my kids are in bed. That means that I won’t post much over the weekends (sorry).

If you have any questions, feel free to post them below.

I look forward to gaming with you!

I'm also new to PbP, but I have about 10 years of experience with D&D and 5 with Pathfinder, both as a player and a DM. I read both guides you linked, and I'd like to submit a character for this campaign:

Tessara Silverfrond - Elf - Wizard (Abjurer) 1

Background:

Tessara belongs to the Silverfrond family, a lesser noble house of elves residing in Caliphas, the capital city of Ustalav. An ancient and very proud house, the Silverfronds traditionally set out on a personal journey sometime after they come of age, returning only when they have done great deeds to bring honor to their family's name (and, some whisper, acquired great riches to line their family's vaults). The Silverfronds are particularly known for their history of superb wizards and arcanists, and maintain an excellent arcane library in the family's ancestral manor house.

Tessara has always admired her uncle, Caladrel Silverfrond the great Transmuter, and has studied hard since childhood to develop her talents in wizardry, fencing, and poetry-- though to her perpetual frustration, her natural magical gifts tend towards warding things rather than changing their nature. Having recently been affianced to an elven man of gentle birth from another Caliphasian house, Tessara has now set out on her own journey, intent on proving herself worthy of the Silverfrond name and living up to the legacy of her uncle Caladrel.

Her satchel is about the size of a backpack, and when carried rests on her right hip with her dagger's sheath built into one side of it and the rest of her possessions inside. She keeps her parchment, inkpen, and ink vial inside her scroll case, and her potion and perfume in small padded inner pockets of the satchel. She regularly uses prestidigitation to keep herself and all her possessions clean, putting great pride in her personal appearance.

Thanks for the submission Preston!

BACKGROUND
------------------------------
Adu Omir is from Qadira. His father is a horse jockey. [Work in progress]

We are officially half way to through the application time! As of now, we only have two submission: Tessara Silverfrond, and Adu Omir. We have room for up to 6 players, but time to submit is running out! Make sure you get your submission in before it is too late!

To make this a little more enticing, here is a little bit of backstory for the adventure! I have changed a lot of the fluff around the adventure to move it away from the Pathfinder Society.

Welcome to Midgard

This mission takes place in the city of Zobeck (Part of the Midgard Campaign Setting published by Kobold Press). Feel free to post any questions about the setting, or visit the Kobold Press Website to find all sorts of interesting information about the setting.

Within recent weeks, rumors that the undead prince of Morgau (an enemy kingdom to the north) has begun amassing his army have begun spreading around Zobeck. While most of the rumors seem to be well founded, The Arcane Collegium has openly taken a strong stance against investigating the matter any further. Most citizens are starting to worry, and a few prominent merchant families have even begun petitioning the Free City Council to investigate the matter. While the Free City Council has largely remained quite about the entire affair, you have recently received a vague letter from Herdri Eshin (a well known merchant) asking you to meet him at a small fish and tackle store in lower Zobeck to discuss “matters of recent events”. What could all this mean?

What are your thoughts on Drawbacks?

Since this is a PFS scenario, I assume it will end before we level up (I have no experience with PFS). Will we only be playing at level 1?

Lastly I too am new to PbP, but not Pathfinder in general. I recently started GMing a PbP (for IRL friends only, who are also new to PbP) and am interested to see how being a player goes. This kind of short commitment is exactly what I've been looking for, so thanks for willing to GM this.

I hope to have my PC up for you tomorrow. A courtly kobold alchemist and devout follower of Apsu. (Unless, of course, that deity doesn't exist in Midgard)

I am fine with drawbacks if you want to take one. Just make sure it isn't something that is going to annoy the rest of the party.

Yes, this scenario will end before we level up, so you will spend the entire time at level 1 (it is quite short). However, if everyone enjoys it, I am willing to continue on with the same group afterwards (or swap out for a few new people if someone isn't interested) and do more scenarios or even do a homebrew mission. We will discuss it as a group as the scenario comes to an end.

I am glad that we have a few new players! I look forward to learning along side you guys!

If the party is in need of a rogue, may I offer my services.

With all this newness to PbP, let me give you an idea that I really like. I use block initiative. It really helps keep the game moving. I roll initiative for the party and group as many players together on the same line as possible. If your line is up, you may move. Here is an example:

Round 1:

Max Muir, tomtesserae <------------
bad guy 1, bad guy 2
Vors Aman
bad guy 3

If bad guy 3 dies, you can move Vors to the first line next round.

I totally agree with you here! In the PbP game that I am playing right now, we started without block initiative, but we quickly moved to block initiative because it was WAY too slow without block initiative. I will definitely be using block initiative! Let me give you an example of how I will use it.

Lets say I have the following initiative rolls:
PC1 -> 15
PC2 -> 3
PC3 -> 9
PC4 -> 16
NPC1 -> 11
NPC2 -> 5

Then we will get the following rounds:

PC1, PC4
NPC1
PC3
NPC2 (Summary)
PC2, PC1, PC4
NPC1
PC3
NPC2 (Summary)
PC2, PC1, PC4
.
.
.

As you can see, I will also be summarizing the entire round during the last NPC round. The thing to note here, is that since PC2 had a lower initiative than all NPCs, PC2 will not get an turn until the second round. While this sounds like quite the disadvantage for PC2, I don't think it actually has any negative impact, since no one on the other team can do anything before PC2 gets a chance to act, and it keeps the game moving.

May I present Prince Magniventris, or as he likes to be called, his highness Prince Magniventris of house Alkindus, eighth of his name, loyal to the Exiled Wyrm.

I'm all for block initiative, that sounds like an elegant solution.

I've kept my backstory locations vague, as I know this isn't technically taking place in Golarion. How are kobolds treated/viewed in this setting? Let me know if anything in my character sheet or backstory needs amending.

I also love the block initiative idea!

Dotting

May I present Stenne Deepmug,dwarven moonshiner and wandering merchant.

We are now at 5 applicants! There is still time though! Make sure to get your character in before Monday evening (MST).

Currently in the running:

    * Tessara Silverfrond (Wizard)
    * Adu Omir (Cavalier)
    * Vors Aman (Rogue)
    * Prince Magniventris (Alchemist - Grenadier)
    * Stenne Deepmug (Alchemist - Moonshiner)

Prince Magniventris:

Kobolds actually play a large role in this setting; so much so that one district is called the Kobold Ghetto. Kobolds are generally considered a lower status of citizen, but they are definitely welcome within the city walls. I will send you some more information in a PM (Midgard technically isn't OGL, so I don't want to step on any toes by posting too much of the history publicly).

Dotting!

Only a few days left! Don't forget to submit your characters!

Dot, I have an idea, I have a Anaphexia Thought-Killer Vigilante I wanna play.
He is a teifling, But As A Preist Of Pharasma I'm sure his race will be overlooked, especially if he's in full preist Regalia. Although one of the harder parts of this archetype is being mute yet still able to RP. After all, All my ranks in bluff and diplomacy are kinda useless if I don't have a tongue :P

Also, this is the Alias I will be using.

Also, I fully intend on taking throw anything and chucking a shield at my enemies and have it return to me :P

My style is to go full Captain America, only with the attitude of Batman.

Only one day left!

Tomorrow evening I will be closing the recruitment. So far, your odds of getting in are very good!

Silver Crusade

I humbly submit for your consideration; Cavasin the Grey, Protector of the Untainted; Shield to the Worthy.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Aura (Ex) A warpriest of a chaotic, evil, good, or lawful deity has a particularly powerful aura (as a cleric) corresponding to the deity's alignment (see detect evil).
Blessings (Su) You can call upon the power of your blessings 3 times per day. The DC for these blessings is 12
Bonus Feat Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.
Bonus Languages A warpriest's bonus language options include Abyssal, Celestial, and Infernal. These choices are in addition to the bonus languages available to the character because of his race.
Ease of Faith Your mentor, the person who invested your faith in you from an early age, took steps to ensure you understood that what powers your divine magic is no different from that which powers the magic of other religions. This philosophy makes it easier for you to interact with others who may not share your views. You gain a +1 bonus on Diplomacy checks, and Diplomacy is always a class skill for you.
Focus Weapon At 1st level, a warpriest receives Weapon Focus as a bonus feat (he can choose any weapon, not just his deity's favored weapon).
Focus Weapon (Morningstar)
Healing Blessing
Ice Strike (Su) You can touch one weapon and enhance it with the power of water. For 1 minute, this weapon glows with a blue-white chill and deals an additional 1d4 points of cold damage with each strike. This additional damage doesn't stack with the additional damage from the frost or icy burst weapon special abilities.
Orisons Warpriests can prepare a number of orisons, or 0-level spells, each day as noted on Table 1-14. These spells are cast as any other spell, but aren't expended when cast and can be used again.
Powerful Healer (Su) You can add power to a cure spell as you cast it. As a swift action, you can treat any cure spell as if it were empowered (as the Empower Spell feat), causing it to heal 50% more damage (or deal 50% more damage if used against undead). This ability doesn't stack with itself or the Empower Spell feat.
Sacred Weapon (Su) Sacred weapons (including his deities favored weapon and all weapons with Weapon Focus) can do base 1d6 damage instead of the weapons normal base damage. At 1st level, weapons wielded by a warpriest are charged with the power of his faith. In addition to the favored weapon of his deity, the warpriest can designate a weapon as a sacred weapon by selecting that weapon with the Weapon Focus feat; if he has multiple Weapon Focus feats, this ability applies to all of them. Whenever the warpriest hits with his sacred weapon, the weapon damage is based on his level and not the weapon type. The damage for Medium warpriests is listed on Table D. The warpriest can decide to use the weapon's base damage instead of the sacred weapon damage-this must be declared before the attack roll is made. (If the weapon's base damage exceeds the sacred weapon damage, its damage is unchanged.) This increase in damage does not affect any other aspect of the weapon, and doesn't apply to alchemical items, bombs, or other weapons that only deal energy damage.
Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.
Spontaneous Casting A good warpriest (or a neutral warpriest of a good deity) can channel stored spell energy into healing spells that he did not prepare ahead of time. The warpriest can expend any prepared spell that isn't an orison to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower. A cure spell is any spell with "cure" in its name. An evil warpriest (or a neutral warpriest of an evil deity) can't convert spells to cure spells, but can convert them to inflict spells. An inflict spell is any spell with "inflict" in its name. A warpriest that is neither good nor evil and whose deity is neither good nor evil chooses whether he can convert spells into either cure spells or inflict spells. Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. This choice also determines whether the warpriest channels
Undead Slayer (Pharasma) Instructed at a young age in the tenets of the faith of Pharasma, you view the undead as abominations that must be destroyed, so their souls can journey beyond to be judged. You gain a +1 trait bonus on weapon damage against undead.
Water Blessing
Weapon and Armor Proficiency A warpriest is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, as well as the favored weapon of his deity, and with all armor (heavy, light, and medium) and shields (except tower shields). If the warpriest worships a deity with unarmed strike as its favored weapon, the warpriest gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat.

Goals:
Short term goals: Respite from travel; Cavasin has subsisted on mere rations and generous charity, and has slept in the elements for weeks now. He wants nothing more than a warm meal and bed.
Long term goals: Balance. He considers himself Redeemed, having committed horrible acts in he name of war, and has devoted the rest of his life to the service of the Gray Lady.

He constantly fears he has not done enough to truly atone for his actions, but putting the undead to rest adds to the list of acts and deeds that he can refer to when he is judged in the Boneyard.

This is Tassadan submitting Cassandra Cressen, an Inquisitor of Winlas (The Empyreal Lord of The Great Library of Harmonious Scripture).

Her specific sect believes in guarding precious tomes with other precious tomes and use metal-girded Grimoires as their weapons of choices. Under her rather frumpy and unflattering dress, Cassandra's body ripples with muscle from almost ten years of rigorous combat training with her fellow Inquisitors.

Upon hearing that a secret library of the true history of Taldor existed, Cassandra was the first from her sect to volunteer her services. She can't wait to see what original rituals, practices, and other details such a library might furnish for the worship of her Librarian Lord!

Alright! That is it! I am officially closing recruitment of this PbP. I know I said I would do it last night, but unfortunately work got in the way. Thanks to everyone who applied! I will have the final selection up as soon as possible (most likely later tonight). Good luck everyone!

A list of those who applied is:

* Tessara Silverfrond (Wizard)
* Adu Omir (Cavalier)
* Vors Aman (Rogue)
* Prince Magniventris (Alchemist - Grenadier)
* Stenne Deepmug (Alchemist - Moonshiner)
* Houron Greyheart (Vigilante)
* Cavasin the Gray (warpriest)
* Cassandra Cressen (Inquisitor)

If I missed you, please let me know ASAP.

Thanks everyone!

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Yay! Her nickname shall be 'Beers' and she will be played like an infamous red neck neighbor known as Billy. If u haven't heard,just type it into YouTube and u will not be disappointed.

Thanks again to everyone who submitted characters, I had a lot of fun reading through them all. The decision was hard, but I have made up my mind.

The group is:
* Tessara Silverfrond (Wizard)
* Vors Aman (Rogue)
* Prince Magniventris (Alchemist - Grenadier)
* Stenne Deepmug (Alchemist - Moonshiner)
* Cavasin the Gray (warpriest)
* Cassandra Cressen (Inquisitor)

For those of you who weren’t selected, I hope you will come back again next time. Good luck in your other applications!

For those of you who made it, but haven’t made an alias yet, please go ahead and do that now.

I am currently having some trouble converting this thread into a campaign. Once I get that figured out, we will get started. I will post here when the problem is fixed with instructions.

See you at the gaming table!

Just start a new thread in play by post it will all fall in place. Do not delete your first post in any tab. A known bug will get you for that.

Congratulations to those accepted! Have fun with the game.

Woo!

Can't wait!

I just started a new campaign. It is not intuitive, but so easy. Go to play by post and then click start a new thread. The subject is the name of the campaign and you must type something in comments. Look up and to the left. You will have the choice to turn the post into a campaign. The other tabs are not initiated until you post something in them. You can edit that first post but do not delete it or you will be talking to technical support.

I just opened recruiting for one player in that campaign if anyone here is interested.

It is here

Thanks so much for the selection! I can't wait to play with you all!

GM The Voiceless, let us know when you have a live Gameplay or Discussion thread. Vors Aman's instructions are legit, so just provide a link once it's all set up!

Ya, I did that, but every time I click on the link to turn the post into a campaign, I just get a blank screen. I am going to talk to technical support and see if they can help.

I have made the thread here! We might as well get started while I figure this out. Happy Gaming!

LOL, he deleted the first post...just kidding. No idea or I would try to help. I hope he does not get that female in tech support I spoke with. Prettiest voice I ever heard. If he does, this could take a long while.
