Ah yes. Now I remember. I set up another thread for Group 2 after the first episode because the type in the main title was just embarrassing me.

Valorous it may not be, but survival is of the essence. Both Thom and Lynore bravely run away, although Thom suffers a passing attack from the Vestige as he leaves.

You strike the floor hard, landing within a domed chamber. A circle of runes in the ceiling marks the portal through which you've just passed. Your eye is drawn to a great green face carved into the stone of the floor beside you. The graven image of a horned devil stares up blindly - eyes blank, mouth opened to reveal a space of dead black within it. A single word has been scrawled into stone beneath the face; "Devourer".

Glowing Stone archways are set around the chamber, each with white mist swirling inside. Between the arches, some twenty well-rotted humanoid corpses hang from the ceiling, entwined with chains that drip black ichor to the floor.

Apologies for the less-than-awe inspiring evocation of the Devourer. I'm not that great with Fractal Mapper.

Barel decides it is time to expend his second wind and try to heal up much of the damage from the vestige earlier.

Next, he begins to look around before even moving a foot.

Spend two healing surges. Perception check 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
hp=111/115; hs=5/14 left

edit: And with a roll like that, all Barel sees is his feet and a big picture on the floor.

Thom and Lynore - I need to know what you're looking at with those rolls. Perception is valid for the archways and the face in the floor (one each), Arcana/History/Religion for the face and Arcana for the archways.

EDIT:

Take 2133Xp for holding off the Vestige and making it through the portal. Total XP 36,833 and you are closing fast on level 13.

Assuming a short rest:
Plant my Battle Standard of Healing, so for everyone who spends a healing surge within 5 squares everyone else recovers one hit point. Spend three healing surges, 17+60+4 (Thom and Barel) = 81/81 hit points, 2/8 surges.So far, Thom and Barel are regaining another 5hp.
Subsequently;
History check 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 28 - the face in the floor

I want to look at the Archways, just in case it is relevant my passive perception is 21, 25 for traps


Arishat's knowledge of history informs her that she is looking at the infamous personal symbol of the twisted demilich, Acererak. Oddly, the symbol seems wrong. The symbol has never been depicted with closed eyes.

Lynore notices faint footprints leading to archways 1, 2, 6, 8 and 9.

She also notices that two of the bodies hanging from the ceiling are moving slightly.

The Arcana roll was for the archways, the History roll is for the face, and the Religion roll is for the hanging corpses.

"Well, is it safe to rest here?"


Thom draws the same conclusions about the face as Arishat.

Looking at the archways, he discerns teleportation magic suffusing each of them.

In response to his own question, he notes that two of the bodies on the ceiling are moving...

Nobody has yet run an Arcana check on the face.


Thom looks at the face a bit closer...Arcana 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 20 = 26

Thom recognises that the mouth of the blind Devourer is a fixed sphere of darkness, much like a sphere of annihilation (i.e. a nasty arcane trap).

Lynore spots scapes and scratches around the gaping mouth, as though armour creatures have lowered themselves into it.

Before either has time to make any further investigations, they are rudely interrupted by the advent of two sword wraiths, who drop screaming from the ceiling and fly towards the party.

Roll initiatve please. Don't forget your +4 Arishat bonus.

Starting the long slow haul to rebuilding. Do me a favour and check your own profiles are intact. Last time this happened, it was somehow connected to having many profiles open at once - and obviously in the course of starting the rebuild, I have had to do just that.

A few questions (that you can ignore until you are ready to continue):
Do these wraiths look like the same as the ones we fought last time we first ported into Moil?
Did we get to have a short rest, or are we still in the same encounter? Barel, being the suspicious type, may not have dropped his Boiling Cloud form.


Different wraiths. These bods are flying and insubstantial. They wield swords of shadow.

You had a short rest and used surges to restore yourselves.

The rebuild is going to be slightly less agonising than I feared. Some genius found a cached copy from 30 July on Google, which is quite a bit of help.

Lynore fades in and out and appears next to Tavar, the shadow rope she throws at the nearest wraith appears to pass right through it.


Lynore employs the shadows to dance through space, but her attack has no effect on the wraith - her insubstantial noose falling far short of her target.

I forgot about using the crit over in the last fight, I will use it on my next at-will since that is what i used it on in the last fight.

Kidlat struts across the chamber and sends a noose of lightning towards the nearest sword wraith. The flickering light ruins his aim.

Lightning Lure (Fort). Range 3. On hit pulls target to nearest adjacent space.
1d20+14=18 - Kidlat v W2. Miss.
Can't get close enough to smack it with he Aegis, unfortunately.

The wraiths commune briefly with each other and converge on Barel.

Shadow Sword (Ref). On hit target is weakened (se)
1d20+22=25 - W1 v Barel. Miss.
1d20+25=35 - W2 v Barel. Hits. 2d8+7=22 plus 2d6=10 extra for the CA.

Thom touchs his spellbook and feels the warmth flow into his hands. He concentrates and calls on the powers of the tome to summona a flaming blade.

Standard Action, Area Burst 2 within 10 squares.
Effect: Each ally in the area can fall prone as a free action.
Attack: Intelligence 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22 vs. Reflex vs. W1
Intelligence 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17 vs. Reflex vs. W2
Hit: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (5, 2, 5) + 8 = 20 fire damage.
Miss: Half damage.

Destructive Wizardry +3 to damage if you hit two or more creatures
Clever Control +2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 damage with close or area attacks target 2 or more creatures, and only hit one.

Pending the ruling from Rev, I would say the answer to both questions is yes.

The compendium states that the target is "any non-prone creature in area." So, Barel will drop prone and avoid taking more damage.


It seems to me that if you drop prone, you don't take the damage and am going to interpret it that way. Dropping prone is a penalty in itself as you'll still need to use a move action to stand up again.

Thom's warning comes in time for Barel to drop to the gound and avoid the scything blade of flame that sweeps through the sword wraiths. Although the arcane blade hits neither, it generates enough heat to penetrate their insubstantial bodies as it passes.

Any ally next to the Sheild Bearer gain +2 to all defenses, Sheild Bearer last to EOMNT.


The sword wraith is too fast for the shield bearer, but Barel feels the benefit nonetheless.

Barel tries to shake the weakness that came over him. He then stands up to face the wraiths flanking him. Although they do not gain a benefit on attacking him, he still doesn't like being flanked. He assumes the Form of the oak sentinel and his arms grow longer than usual (and slighly leafy). He calls out, "You think you are so tough, let's see if you can dodge this." He swings his hammer around and the ground begins to tremble immediately around himself that seems to swipe at the legs of the wraiths.

Standard action--roots of stone (versus AC, creates a zone of rippling earth UEMNT close burst 1):
W1:1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28
W2:1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28
On hit: 1d10 + 9 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 5 = 19 and if target leaves area (burst 1 around Barel), target is knocked prone and takes 5 additional points damage.
On miss: nothing.

Barel: hp=83/115 hs=5/14
+2 all defenses, additional +2 to will.
Uncanny dodge: flanking enemies do not get +2 to attack, but do get other bonuses associated with CA.
Do not worry about healing me yet. I have two uses of second wind this encounter, but will probably like an extended rest after this encounter if possible (particularly if I have to use the rest of my surges).


Powerful though his attack is, the sword wraiths are just strong enough to face down the strangely leafy form of Barel.

Arishat glares at the wraiths. "More undead. Great." She slips across the room to flank one, getting between it and her allies. She feints a jab, looks past as if Barel is attacking, then tries to strike it.

Move (I12, H11, H10, G9) to F10
Standard: Deceiver's Ploy (or even Deciever's Ploy, as the character builder spells it) vs W1; Attack 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (8) + 19 = 27 vs Will; damage 2d10 + 13 ⇒ (7, 2) + 13 = 22 and the target takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls teomnt
Edit: If Barel attacks W1 in it's current position, he gets +4 damage for flanking with Arishat.
