The Tomb of Horrors Part 1 (4e) - Group 1

Game Master Rev Rosey

The monster that is Tomb of Horrors.
Two groups are going through this.
For some reason I set up a second game thread for Group 2, but not for Group 1.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

M5 missed last turn. Am I still marked?

Urk. No, you're not.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Lyan, still weakened, tries to keep on the move.

M4 resolutely refuses to die properly.

Male Deva Shaman 17, Scion of Renewal

Rothel grows worried, as these last two mummies seem resilient to all of the attacks lobbed at them as of late. He is refreshed little by the rain that washes over him. His spirit moves protectively closer to him, and strikes out at the mummy he now hovers over. Then lends some of his spirit to his current form.

Move, Spirit shift above M4 into G9
Standard, Stalker's Strike 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (9) + 20 = 29 vs Fort, damage 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15. Hope that hits.
End of my turn, since Lyan still has temps, Rothel gets 11 temps.

Rahz-Ahk floats above M4's head and claws fruitlessly. The creature is stronger than one might imagine from its bedraggled appearance.

Successful identification of the table gives Norrin a needed boost and his arrow terminates M4. As the mummy falls, its spirit can be seen fleeing the tomb as it speeds towards the Shadowfell.

Since M4 is now dead, I'm happy for you to be hiding from M5 with the same roll.

M5 remains upright and resolute, hurling its curse at everyone except the unseen half-orc.

Lisbarr concentrates as hard as he can to try to make some difference to the fight. He makes sure that the remaining mummy is in his disadvantage zone and tries to make him even more vulnerable.

Move zone over M5 (centred on K8): M5 at -2 to all defences;
Sustain the zone;
Astral Seal vs M5 vs Ref.
1d20+19=(15)+19=34. On hit, no damage but target takes a further -2 to all defences until the end of Lisbarr's next turn. The next person to hit him also regains 2 hit points.
So M5 is at -2 to all attacks and saving throws and -4 to all defences while in the zone and just -2 to all defences outside the zone.

"Well then. Now we'll see...".

Save vs weakened: 1d20=12
Save vs marked: 1d20=3

Lisbarr finally finds his form and drops his zone over M5. He follows up with a blast of debilitating power.

Rothel moves up beside Lyan, as Rahz-ahk rushes around behind Akemi to a place on the other side of the mummy, hoping to try and block it off. As he moves, Rothel also moves his zone to center on the one remaining enemy, before Rahz-Ahk strikes out uselessly once again.

There is an abrupt tearing sound as Norrin's blades rip the encasing bandages apart and the last mummy collapses. The room falls silent as the dust settles again, broken only by Lyan attempting to suppress his Mummy induced cough.

Out of combat. Realised rather belatedly that M5 was bloodied a couple of turns earlier.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

"Not before time," Lyan mutters. "The plan was for you to leave the room, then let them try to tag me when I followed."

The hobgoblin's grumbling degenerates into a hacking cough.

Presumably, I can keep getting the regen until unbloodied? That leaves me at 69hp, 9 surges.

You can indeed.

Male Deva Shaman 17, Scion of Renewal

Rothel gets a sour look on his face, "I understand that that was the plan you cooked up as you ran into the room swinging. I also understand that I was in the process of making my way through, but did not get far before at least one person required healing. I say that it is doubtful that anything that is willing to fight, and powered by the fuel of necrotic energies, will just leave off if we kindly pass only taking in the scenery. They are tireless abominations, in a place given power by evil. We cannot always just wander by unmolested. If they rise, then often our only recourse is to put them back to rest so they are unable to come upon us as we deal with another threat at a different time, or wake us from what we thought was safe slumber." He starts looking over Lyan's injuries, "Now let me see what I can do about this infection, it looks to be festering."

Heal: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Lyan accedes to Rothel's healing -- if not with good grace, at least not so poorly as to keep arguing.

You can't attempt to cure Lyan until after his next extended rest, but with that roll I will allow one of Lyan's surges to heal the full value.

Akemi lifts her mask and chants a short sutra to Ioun before breathing deeply and restoring herself.

uses 3 surges to get back to full. Now on 113hp with 3 surges remaining.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Cool, thanks. 99 hp, 8 surges

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

Lisbarr offers to perform a ritual to cure Lyan, but needs to be at full health himself or it might end up as the one being killed.

"Let me see if I can do anything."

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Pronoun trouble...

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

Just noticed, and changed the post... There is a chance that, if Lisbarr rolls terribly when doing the ritual, he could die unless he is on full health. Which he now is...

Lisbarr can certainly cast the ritual. Aiding is fine.

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

Oops! just re-read the compendium entry, it is dangerous for the recipient, but as long as someone aids, this should be OK...

For your information, the disease level is 21 and Lisbarr's health skill is 19, so with a successful aid, Lyan cannot die even if Lisbarr rolls a 1.

Lyan, it is up to you if you want to try, you will almost certainly take damage up to half your full health because the maximum Lisbarr can get in his heal check is 18 (=20+19-21)

From the compendium:
This ritual is physically taxing to the recipient; if used on an injured character, it can even kill him or her. Upon completing this ritual, make a Heal check, using the level of the disease as a penalty to this check. The result indicates the amount of damage the character takes. Assuming the character survives, this damage can be healed normally.

Heal Check
Result Effect on Target
0 or lower Death
1–9 Damage equal to the target’s maximum hit points
10–19 Damage equal to one-half of the target’s maximum hit points
20–29 Damage equal to one-quarter of the target’s maximum hit points
30 or higher No damage

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

So I'll take either half or full, but won't die? Do it. I'm above half so even full won't kill me outright, and if I take full, the margin goes away with the first use of a surge. Right, Rev?

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

"OK now please try to stand still, and anyone who wants to help, do so. This may hurt..."

Lisbarr looks at Lyan and tries to find where the root of the disease might lie. He grunts, says something rude in elvish, then sits down abruptly.

Heal check... 1d20 + 19 - 21 ⇒ (3) + 19 - 21 = 1.
I don't think any aids will help...

"Sorry, didn't go as well as I thought it might...! Are you still OK?". He turns to Rothel. "Er... maybe you can heal him a bit more while we all look for treasure?"

Lyan is complately cured of mummy rot, but falls uncnscious - taking damage equal to to his full health.

Lisbarr's ritual is potent indeed. Hardy though he is, Lyan collapses under the impact. He is now a perfectly healthy, but very unconscious, hobgoblin.

You can now heal normally.

Male Deva Shaman 17, Scion of Renewal

Rothel, taking the time to relax as Lisbarr performs his ritual, stands up as Lyan gets drained by the result. He summons forth the eneries of the spirit world to revive the hobgoblin, as nearby Akemi gets the bleed off emanating from Rahz-Ahk. Stopping long enough regather his strength, he delves once again into feeding spirit energy into Lyan, but this time he himself gets more of the bleed off from his companion.

Rothel takes a short rest, heals Lyan with Akemi getting the spirit heal.
Lyan 2 surges+6 each, Akemi gets 3d8 ⇒ (4, 8, 1) = 13, and 3d8 ⇒ (7, 8, 6) = 21.
Then Rothel wil short rest again, giving Lyan a surge+6, and Himself a Surge+6, with Him getting Lyan's 3d8 ⇒ (3, 8, 3) = 14, and Akemi getting his 3d8 ⇒ (6, 4, 7) = 17.

Summary:
Lyan gets 3 surges +18 total.
Akemi Gets 51 total.
Rothel gets surge +6 and 14 total.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Yay! 108/121hp, 5 surges remaining, and no longer rotting. Thank you both.

Lyan jerks and collapses under Lisbarr's healing, then comes around under Rothel's ministrations. Sitting up swiftly, he looks around and sees the chaos in the room and the remnants of Lisbarr's ritual. Flexing his limbs tentatively, the hobgoblin decides he is indeed restored.

"Thank you both. Now, what next?"

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

"Oh, any time..."

Lisbarr has been casting his eye around the room to see if there might be anything useful.

Among the items left on the table, Lisbarr spots some useful residuum and something small and shiny.

At a rough guess, the half-elf thinks the residuum is worth about 1,000gp.

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

"Comrades' Succor!" Shouts the half-orc as he finally remembers the name of the ritual he was thinking of.

"I remember a ritual where the participants link hands to form a large circle around the subject to transfer their vitality to 'em. Does anyone know it?"

I can give Lyan some of my healing surges if there were some way to transfer them.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Thanks, but I've got a solid fight's worth left. Let's see the next steps.

Glint, glint

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Norrin cautiously approaches the small, shiny object; aware that all that glitters is not gold, but horrible, cursed, mummy gold.

Male Deva Shaman 17, Scion of Renewal

Coin! Coin!

The glinting object appears at first to be jewellery of some kind, but closer inspection reveals that it is a key.

Among the bandages, remnants of sacred oils and scraps of parchment, one complete scroll can be seen. Appropriately enough, it removes affliction.

Male Half-Elf Invoker/17 Speaker of the Word

Lisbarr takes the residuum and adds it to his collection.

"Ah, a key..? It must unlock something. They usually do."

"Shall we move on?"

Can anyone else use the scroll other than Lisbarr who already has the remove affliction ritual?

Ready?

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Yep

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Yup.

Progressing down the corridor, you once again see that the terrain around you is changing. The oily, necrotic feel that pervaded the chamber of the mummys is steadily replaced by an eerie, greenish light. Slick moss makes the going treacherous.

Ahead lies a small square chamber, the floor embedded with softly lit golden runes and around the corner you can just see lapping water. Lisbarr's paranoia detects no immediate threat from the runes.

MAP

Blue is water. Big goldenish square is mysterious mist floating over a small island. Took a guess on marching order.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

"Runes? Whose bailiwick are those?"

Male Deva Shaman 17, Scion of Renewal

Had a post, site went down, poof it's gone

Rothel looks into the runes, speaking with his spirits for guidance.

Speak with spirits, +6 to next skill check.
Arcana 1d20 + 19 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 19 + 6 = 33

Rothel moves closer and examines the runes. They are reluctant to give up their secrets, but he is aware that the golden mist positively churns with arcane power.
