I'm withdrawing my interest here. This is taking way too long to get started. Have fun guys.

Sorry you feel that way.

Maybe we should see how many people are still interested. Because maybe we don't need to fight over spots in the campaign.

Pirate Pirate Pirate

Yar!

I'm still here.

Sir Orrin is pretty much ready to go with the exception of my unanswered question regarding the Lord's Banner, and the bit of gear he has over the 1.505 mill. limit.

I was waiting on a definitive answer from Herald regarding players helping players with crafting before keeping or reducing gear, and word from Herald on how the 4th power of the Hallow power of the Lord's Banner works before detailing that on my sheet.

If you don't want to find the question hidden in the depths of the FAQ document, it is essentially this:

The Lord's Banner of Crusade's grants a continuous Hallow effect in the 40' radius. Hallow grants 4 specific boons, the last of which is a bonus spell effect (one of 22 listed spells). The question is basically: is the spell chosen when the banner is created, or can it be changed by casting either the specific spell or Hallow itself on the banner, or does it grant that power of Hallow at all? ...and of course, is there a preferred spell effect by the group (my personal favorites are either Dimensional Anchor targeting enemies, or Freedom of Movement targeting allies). The item description itself says nothing about this either way, so my base assumption is that the spell is chosen upon creation, but I wanted to make sure.

~P

That is a pickle. Let's hope Herald comes back soon to explain that. Seems like he's been gone since Monday.

Pirate Pirate Pirate

Yar!

Also - after doing a very brief profile-stalk - it seems that Herald hasn't posted anywhere since Tuesday, and in general only makes a handful of posts each time he's online, often focusing on only one or two things rather than everything he's involved with here. His time online and posting also seems to not be every day.

I'm kinda expecting this game to run on something close to a "GM posts once per week" speed, which seems close to what Herald's posting in the recruitment thread has been. (approximately, but not definitively. There I know there have been a few day to day posts, I'm also in no position (as I'm at work) to go through every one of the 757 posts to see how often Herald made posts there).

Personally, I can live with a weekly updated game rather than a daily one (so long as I'm aware ahead of time that that is the preferred or expected pace), but that's just me.

~P

Same here. I often do Roll20 games once a week, so I'm game for it. As long as everyone else is.

I'm still here, just had a crazy week with over 400 campers so I've had very little time. Expect a full post either tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for being patient!

As for my posting schedule it's usually 1 a day but these days have been hectic.

Someone seems to have mentioned Roll20 and I am open to that idea if people want to go that way.

I love some Roll20. Good to see you're back, Herald, can't wait to get started.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

Not sure what Roll20 is, but if its a separate site, I am not interested. Doubt I would check it all that much, with this being my only game there.

Monkey, it is a separate site, but I highly recommend you at least take a look. It's basically a virtual tabletop so you can take placement and spacings into account. Here's a link.

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

OK, that looks awesome, but I seriously doubt my cell phone could handle that, and I do a fair amount of posting from there.

Though I suppose it depends on the pace of the game and such.

It seems like that sort of thing would be used primarily for battles and the like. So it doesn't seem like we'll be using it ALL THE TIME.

However, I know for a fact that it makes cell phones cry. But if you could get to a computer when a battle using it is designated, I can tell you it's really fun.

Pirate Pirate Pirate

Yar!

My work schedule does not allow for regular meeting times for video chat or the like. I do theatre work as regular in house staff. The nine-to-five thing and regular/consistent weekly schedules does not exist in my world. Every day is different. Working evenings and weekends is common. Working 15+ hour days happens. Even the type of work is variable. At any time I could be sitting in front of the computer, 40' up in the air in a lift changing theatre lights or hanging props or whatever, outside building a section of a functional yet portable house to be assembled on stage, painting set pieces, in the middle of an actual concert/performance as stage manager, lighting operator or sound technician, in the recording studio creating a professional recording, dealing with clients as they come regarding bookings, trouble shooting current problems, etc. And I need to be prepared to do any and all of that and more at any time as the needs arise.

Roll20 looks cool, but if it requires being online at the same time as the GM and/or others, then it is not a feasible option for me at all (and so far it looks like it is based around online real time sessions). If, however, it can be accessed at any time and adjusted freely on my own like maps in google.docs or other such programs, then cool! If that is the case, it may be fun to use.

Of course, I also don't know enough about it yet.

EDIT: regardless of the above, I already have a picture for a token to use for Sir Orrin if we do use some program for mapping battles and the like. It's an image slightly modified by me via photoshop, and how I imaging Sir Orrin looks (and why it's so hard to find something that works in the paizo selection of avatars). Seen HERE.

...and if anyone's curious, his crest/heraldry looks like THIS.

~P

Theoretically, it does seem like that sort of thing is possible, it's not necessarily built that way. Though, it does save previous chatlogs, dice rolls, and maps, so it seems like some semblance of order could be achieved.

EDIT: Probably going to need to find a better picture, myself.

How does this look for the moment?

I have too soft of a spot for hooded magicians.

I have my character essentially done. A little bit of equipment to finish off. Otherwise it's just building the organization and designing the buildings. I was also thinking of using ultimate campaign for that.

Mostly just for kicks. I'm leary of another site for regular posting, maps and combat woudl be ok.

Honestly I am having a real hard time working on my character. There seems to be very little time restraint/crunch creating a lack of modivation/urgency to finish the guy and there are some questions that need to be answered for him to progress to a finished stage (big one, can I play my asterion at all or not :P).
I am still definitely here and still very looking forward to having this get going :)
1/day or 1/week dont matter much to me, as long as I know what everyone else is expecting (especially the dm). Expect me to be one of the more constant posters if possible, as I am on most days.
Never done Roll20 before, and I can often post from my tablet (things slow as ff) but I can usually access a computer at least once a day. Slight learning curve I imagine, but I should be good for it :)

BTW this is Crash's alternate ego, the Asterion :)
He is essentially the paragon of bulls, asterions and minators, almost like their god in flesh (hence lvl 25, though he is not divine or has any divine abilities really). He will also invest heavily in the demiplane project once I get to that point :)

I know I keep saying I'm set, but I feel a lot more set now than I used to. Picked up another cool item. Now I'm just worried that my spell slots per day are less than viable compared to the amount of spells I know (at least regarding 7th and 8th levels).

Due to getting a Page of Spell Knowledge, I picked up a better version of a 7th level spell I wanted. Going through the math on the previous page, I could say I'm saving one of the spells that could go in any level. So I'm thinking of either Waves of Ecstasy or Stormbolts. Though it seems like the former isn't great, as it seems like a higher level version of Slow. But I already have quite a large amount of 8th level spells, so Stormbolts may be less than optimal. What does everyone else think about this conundrum? I'm also open to other possible spells of either 7th or 8th level if you have any to suggest.

Also, Gobo, that seems quite the scary creature right there.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Walk into a crowded market place, cast waves of ecstasy.

Open a very exclusive, high end club in Cheliax or Absalom. Charge a high premium on the food and drink. Hire lots of pretty/handsome waitstaff. Cast waves of ecstasy as the high point of the evening.

You can put roman orgies to shame.

Or you could take yet another combat spell, meh.

RE: Lord's Banner. Since the boon is selected when the spell is cast. I would suggest that you would be safe with identifying the boon on the banner when it is created. If you want to change the boon every time you pull the banner out, I'm not sure that would make sense for something that is not a command word activation. Making it command word would possibly change the base cost.

I also thought it had been determined that pre-start all gear had to be crafted by yourself. No cohorts, followers, or other players.

If I have to reduce my combat ability to buy the feats so you can have cheaper gear, it sounds like a win for you-lose for me.

If you want to have crafted gear, take at least 5 ranks in an appropriate craft or profession skill, take the feat Master Craftsman, and then you can take Craft Magic Arms and Armor and Craft Wondrous Item.

Waves of Ecstasy is definitely something I'd take for mostly fluff purposes. As Stormbolts is something if take for mostly crunch. Lightning is cool and all. But I guess if there's room to grow, I'll take it in a future level.

I guess my idea is that, as a magical arms dealer, my capabilities as a warmage is less than it could be. Plus, it'd be nice to know the ratio of combat to intrigue Herald's thinking of.

I'll probably just think of swapping out an 8th level spell I already took for Stormbolts. Stuns are fun. And if I swap out a spell for Hostile Juxtaposition (Greater?), I'll have a pretty good setup for that sort of thing. There really is a lot to think about here.

Probably more intrigue due to complexity and because its fun.

70/30 sounds alright?

Alright. In thinking it would be closer to 50/50, I replaced Mind Blank with Stormbolts and picked up Mage's Private Sanctum. Probably going to get Mind Blank back again soon.

Well, I'm flexible. I just know some players voiced that they wanted less combat. I'm actually able to give them more intrigue while the combat folks can duke it out in our multiplanar ring of battle.

Recently, I've found that I'm alright with either possibility. There are a lot of ways to have fun as a high level mage, being either destroying your enemies or enjoying a high magic social life.

Also, when might we get some more clarifications in the FAQ? I'd especially like to know if we can give custom names to combined items. I'd like to spend the extra gold and combine my Cloak of Resistance and my Robes of the Summit and call the ensuing creation the "Hoodie of Defiance". "Now only 223,000 at your nearest JR*Mart. Shop smart, shop JR*Mart."

Validk Ghujod wrote:

I think that for some people, player characters are not the same thing as cohorts or NPCs, so there was probably a hope for an actual clarification from Herald (as cohorts/followers/NPC's were ruled as no, but there was no actual mention of helpful player characters at all other than via your assumption).

As for the banner, I never suggested changing the boon every time I take it out, and have no idea where that came from. However, I did suggest being able to change it by having someone spending 24 hours to recast Hallow upon it (as per the spell) as a potential option. I was hoping Herald, being the GM, could give an answer... or even say that "what this person said sounds good" or "lets go with that (in reference to a post or suggestion)", just to confirm that we're on the right track... but so far there has been nothing, and I will (do my best to) never assume a game or a rule will work a certain way without making sure the GM confirms it.

EDIT: I see Herald favorited your post. Herald: What does that mean? Do you just like the first part where Validk's talking about Waves of Ecstasy? Does it mean you agree with the Lord's Banner having the 4th power of Hallow be set upon creation? Does it mean no helpful PCs helping with crafting, ergo you can indeed only craft for yourself and no one else, and we should be ashamed for asking for clarification? Does it mean some sort of combination of the above unconfirmed conclusions? My apologies if I'm sounding a bit pushy or dickish, but I am not telepathic, and I have seen to many things (games, families, and entire businesses/companies in real life) fall apart due to a lack of communication, and right now it just feels like there's a lot getting "lost in translation" as it were. Specifics and details do matter, and it honestly feels like they are being ignored or at best glossed over.

Please just tell use what is what. Please.

I'm sorry for being blunt, but it really does feel like some of us and the specifics needed to complete these characters so they can function legally in this game are being ignored, and that hurts.

As for the rp/combat mix, my position is the same as it was when I posted by background at your request, which I will quote here:

Pirate wrote:
What kind of Campaign you want/where/focus: For me, part of the joy is seeing my character develop as a character, how he deals with different situations and other characters, and how those situations and characters change him in turn, all the while experiencing the unfolding of the current story/plot. In that light, I actually prefer a decent mix of styles, while avoiding extremes that exclude other possibilities. I prefer to stay away from "ALL RP NO COMBAT" just as much as I prefer to stay away from "ALL COMBAT NO RP" games. Some combat, some intrigue/politics, some mystery, some blatant/straightforward threats and counter-actions, with the caveat that we players are, at least most of the time, central to the action. On that note, I find that some great role-playing and character interactions can and do happen during combat, and I try to do this whenever I can. As for setting, at the moment I prefer the Inner Sea (Golarion), but I am also comfortable with Forgotten Realms (Toril), Dragonlance (Krynn), Ravenloft (Demiplane of Dread), Eberron, and Planescape (Sigil and Planes-hoping in general). I will also note that a pit of planes-hoping may be fun for this game as well. Greenlantern-esque inter-planar police force could be a good thing. Having Chaldira tell Sir Orrin that he should take the Test of the Starstone to become a god at her side could also be interesting (for me, at least. Would have to find a way to make it work for everybody though)

So, 70/30, 30/70. 60/40, 40/60, 25/75, 75/25, 50/50, I'm good for all of that (and any ratio between). What I would not like is something like 10/90 or the like, and definitely not 0/100 or the like.

Again, my apologies for the above. I know how ridiculous it can be to put together a game, let alone one of this level, let alone one with 10 enthusiastic players, each with monsters of characters (mechanics/crunch wise and literally), all bombarding you with questions seemingly all the time. I actually and honestly do understand the potential stress involved... but in the long run (and in my experience), having the details nailed down and the questions and concerns answered early and working to minimizing vagueness and ambiguity in the rules, will only make things better, easier, and more fun for all involved (unless one person's "fun" is made by frustrating others by keeping them in the dark, but that's a different matter entirely... I hope).

hrm... I feel like I should apologize again, though I also feel that what I said needed to be said. I am still interested in the game, just a little bit frustrated right now as well.

Yar!

On a lighter note - assuming we are allies adventuring together - what boon do you guys prefer?

These are our options:

  • aid
  • bane
  • bless
  • cause fear
  • darkness
  • daylight
  • death ward
  • deeper darkness
  • detect evil
  • detect magic
  • dimensional anchor
  • discern lies
  • dispel magic
  • endure elements
  • freedom of movement
  • invisibility purge
  • protection from energy
  • remove fear
  • resist energy
  • silence
  • tongues
  • zone of truth.

My personal favorite is dimensional anchor targeting enemies, but I'm open to other suggestions for the benefit of the group.

~P

Well, Death Ward is often useful at higher levels. And Freedom of Movement can be situationally useful.

The only problem I have is that Hallow states that you designate if the spell affects all creatures or just ones of a particular "faith or alignment". So I'm not sure you could mean allies and enemies from that and we could end up hitting ourselves with Dimensional Anchor as well. As someone who picked up Dimension Door, Quicken Spell, and Dimensional Agility, I can tell you that being affected by Dimensional Anchor would cut off a couple of my plans in the middle of a brawl. But, then again, if the banner will only affects evil, then that doesn't matter as much.

Pirate Pirate Pirate

Yar!

oh my, that is correct... though there is another option: "...or creatures who adhere to another faith or alignment." That could mean any alignment or faith other than my own, or a specific one (I personally lean towards "any/all that is not", but I guess that is another thing for Herald to weigh in on).

Well, Sir Orrin's alignment is NG. As for faith, he is semi-pantheonic. That is he venerates all the good aligned deities, but gives particular focus to Chaldira Zuzaristan, the halfling goddess of courage, valor and luck. Desna goes hand in hand with Chaldira Zuzaristan... well, Desna worshipers may not know of Chaldira Zuzaristan, but all who worship Chaldira Zuzaristan know of and give offering to Desna as well.

~P

I haven't thought much on faith, but I do feel like Jacob would be CG. I'm feeling, as a crafter, he would probably worship Torag. But as CG and a Tony Stark-esque figure, he might follow Cayden Cailean.

Pirate Pirate Pirate

Yar.

I reworked Sir Orrin's gear again, and he is now within the wealth limit.

Still hoping for an answer regarding the Lord's Banner of Crusades, but until then.... anyone else have thoughts regarding it? If not, I'm going to assume as Validk suggests (choose one boon at creation, and it is unchangeable) until told otehrwise, and will probably go with Freedom of Movement for creatures that match my faith (Chaldira Zuzaristan with a shout-out to Desna) or my alignment (neutral good).

Thank you very much, Herald. I believe I've got everything I wanted to take care of, now. Orgies and all.

I just have one last question in regards to Drawbacks. I'm thinking of possibly taking the Family Ties drawback. Can I count the group as an impromptu family?

I'm going to sadly have to bow out of this one. Real life has suddenly gotten a bit too busy for me to hammer out all the details of an epic character. Good luck to everyone.

Sorry to hear that. Best of luck to you.

Geez, people are dropping like flies the closer we get to being ready.

Also, I see that Herald agreed with Crash that if someone else has the crafting feats, you can get particular items for 75% cost. I guess it would be most useful to share what we have, now.

Jacob currently has Craft Wondrous Item, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, and Craft Rod. Who else has any item creation feats?

I have brew potion for what its worth.
Glad to hear some questions were answered in the faq :) I'll have to take a look.
I hear ya about people dropping and its sad, I'd still like for the campaign to go through:)
Good luck Cosmic Dream Lord!

Male Weremonkey Rogue/Ranger/Trickster

Still here, busier weekend than expected, with my younger bro comin up from NYC to spend the two days with me, plus a random trip to teh beach.

Also still present

How soon does everyone think they could start?

Well, it looks like Tauros is out :(
I am going to have to go back and re-look at Crash or go back to the drawing board completely :)

What's wrong, Gobo?

Ah, I didn't mean that I am out, it is just that the GM said no to the asterion, so no playing him.
I am still in this, I just got to re-look at my options :)

Alright, good to hear. If you need any help building anything, let us know. Any idea you have in mind at the moment?

I can see why, he did say no 3PP. Did you try stating it out with the race guide?

Humanoid 0 RP
Medium 0 RP
Attributes, Specialized 1 RP
Language, Standard 0 RP
Static Bonus Feat 2 RP
Skill Bonus 2 RP
Low-Light Vision 1 RP
Fast 1 RP
Powerful Charge 2 RP (modified)
less the stand your own feet
not mentioned that with hooves they shouldn't ahve a shoe slot.
That leaves 7 RP.

Why not go with the minotaur?
Large, darkvision, few other nice melee options. It's 6 HD, so maybe a young version.

Plus, if you pick a minotaur, you're unaffected by the Maze spell :V

Sorry I have been so slow. I am on call and have been very busy this week. I am refocusing my efforts on creating an organization and completing the background by the end of the week.
