The Long Vigil (Inactive)

Game Master DMRaven

The warriors of Vigil have been a beacon for good since the Shining Crusade. Standing against the orc hordes of Belkzen, undead swarms from Gallowspire and the demonic armies of the Worldwound, they are never short of threats to face and always in need of bodies for the fray. The elite Knights of Ozem look for only the most promising of Lastwall's recruits to take into their halls. Do you have what it takes?

Wait up, path of war is allowed right? That includes the deadly agility feat?

I've been looking for a way to make a dex-based paladin work. I might just've found it.

Sadly, I don't have Path of War. I'm thinking I'll make a human Dervish Dancer, and work in Bladed Scarf proficiency for some unique things, though I'll have to spend a feat to do it. I'd be tempted to go Weapon Finesse and Deadly Agility...But I think that'd use up too many feats. ;w; Well, I mean...I guess human gets a bonus feat, so I could use a campaign bonus feat for Skill Focus: Stealth or Skill Focus: Perception (for background purposes), a human bonus feat on Weapon Finesse or Weapon Proficiency....Eh, I'll just avoid Weapon Finesse. =w=;

If you don't mind Sarenrae or fighting exclusively with the scimitar, Dawnflower dervish gets Dervish dance at level 1.

But you probably knew that already, and do in fact mind worshipping Sarenrae. It's nice though, even if it eats regular inspire courage.

Nah, I just didn't want the character to really be much of a deity worshipper. That, and the bladed scarf is a two-handed weapon.

I cracked it! That took a while. On the plus side, I now have a paladin concept I won't tire of for the next few years, I think.

Background is still a little bit WIP. I have the hard part nailed down, though. The rest is history, as they say.

(The Dragon)

Okay, so there's tons of human cultures in PF. Would you be opposed to a sort of Eastern-based culture for a character? I'm thinking her parents migrated to this setting and that could easily set them up for debt (or some foul play, even). It also explains why she's using an exotic weapon.

The continent(Empire? Country?) of Tian Xia has tons of eastern culutre

I think it's "continent," and a potential country is Minkai. I think it's where the second half of "Jade Regent" is set, but I'm not sure, so there should be information on it somewhere.

So, looking through all the class options, I think the Swashbuckler might fit Kassara really well (with a small modification to her backstory) so i'll be statting her up as such. - Haven't played or made one before though so we'll see how we go.

Would someone be kind enough to post the text for the "Deadly Agility" feat? I don't have Path of War, and I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Also, I found this, regarding Minkai. ^^

ctrl+f, then write "deadly agility"

Dotting, I'd like to (re)build a Chirurgeon (Alchemist) for this. Hmm...

I'm thinking about the character still, but got a question first: seeing the starting age (15-16 yo human age), must we apply the young template to our characters?

Silver Crusade

No, Humans are "adult" at 15 in pathfinder

@ Elmae Valmia: That's much better than the wiki I read.

Escharid Blackrose wrote:

No templates required.

I will be submitting Urias Lastwaller. I need to write out the backstory, but it's there in outline form. The crunch should all be completed already.

After looking at Path of Wat in more depth, I think I'm going to switch Claire to a warlord with the vanguard commander archetype. It's exactly the kind of role I was looking for, and the maneuver system is really hring back fond 3.5 memories. I'll get that updated tonight most likely

Working on this character. May switch from a cavalier to a stalker or even bloodrager class.

Sovereign Court

Is this still open or is it closed?

Open until Sunday, I believe ^^

The close date is in the first post, Monday November 10th.

Will go for a Bloodrager, finally

Character List

Mark Sweetman – ??? Occultist
Joshua Hirtz – Archaeologist Bard
Elmae Valmia – Dervish Dancer Bard
Little Game Master – Chirurgeon Alchemist

Complete/In-Progress
Christopher Huisjen – Allie Tilernos – Human Inquisitor (Archer/ Divine)
Hrothdane – Claire Tilernos – Human Cavalier (Str Melee)
LordLuke – Septimus Cato – Human Fighter (Str Melee)
Electric Monk – Kassara – Human Swashbuckler (Dex Melee)
Dreaming Warforged – Karla Teg – Human Inquisitor (Str Melee/Divine)
The Dragon – Arae Garven – Human Paladin (Dex Melee/Divine)

Escharid Blackrose – Lachen Anborian – Human Bloodrager (Str melee/Arcane)

A few more “hints/notes” about the campaign. Part One consists of five months of training as Scrubs. Players will perform numerous skill-checks/roleplay scenarios like in the early stages of Skull-And-Shackles (but with time for Downtime). Each week will also have a day of combat duels with various rules. Such as: “No weapons, no magic,” “One-handed weapons only, no magic,” “No weapons, magic,” etc.
There will be numerous NPC's to interact with (teachers, members of your own “cohort,” scrubs in different cohorts). Bonuses such as feats, skills added to class lists, skill ranks, or spell-like abilities may be handed out based on a characters choices each week/month of training. Most of this will be designed to help broaden characters, making them into versatile warriors.

While this is the general concept, its also dressing for an underlying plot so everything will not be cut and dry. What's the fun of a story without a few surprises? :)

Hnnnnnngh! Stop teasing! ;_; Also, made the profile name, working on the sheet right now.

Going to take Skill Focus: Perception for the bonus feat, Weapon Finesse for the Human bonus feat, and...I'll probably take Weapon Proficiency: Bladed Scarf. However, I'll be taking Deadly Agility for a level 3 feat. Yes, it'd technically be easier to go Str, but I see her as a dancer darting in and out of combat, not to mention that's the flavor of the archetype/class itself, so...it definitely fits. It also helps that she's a Cha-based class, because that high Charisma/Diplomacy check will help her get in friendly with people to spy on them (not that she's going to like it, mind.)

Sorry for the delay. I will have Bartholomew Tilernos [Human Archaeologist Bard] worked up for you by the end of the night.

I plan on having him be a sort of Jack-of-All-Trades and it would be nice to work out how he is related to the are other two Tilernos candidates. I'm imagining him being a younger brother who seems to pick up things rather quickly. He has not only benefited from having older siblings, but seems to hold an uncanny amount of luck.

His traits will be Fated and Family, Field, and Fury. You know, the four Fs.

His feats will likely be Fast Learner, Lingering Performance, and Weapon Finesse.

Background:

Kassara tried desperately to hold back a laugh as Andabar, a long-time friend of her mother, deluged the line of raw recruits with his standard introduction to basic training. She’d been amongst the spectators of the yearly ritual since before she could walk, and had known since she had first held a sword that she would one day be amongst them. As Andabar marched down the line, eyeballing each of the recruits’ in turn, and apparently doing his best to scare them out of their wits, she took the opportunity to glance down the line of recruits – most were strangers, but a few were Castle-brats like herself, who she’d known since childhood, but one or two were of the others were quite handsome! Idly she wondered about their skills, she’d wager that she could out-do most of them with a rapier, but her small stature meant that she’d never be any good with anything heavier and, if she was honest, she’d never really practiced as much as she should have with heavier weapons, but at least she was quick, and she knew that she was smart. On more than one occasion she’d managed to best her training partners, even when they were bigger and stronger than herself, and she had devoted a great deal of effort to learning to use speed of the rapier to her advantage. Uncomfortably she shifted in her simple cotton and leather uniform, unconsciously adjusting the weight of her rapier as the commander drew closer, she was developing a most uncomfortable itch, and the urge to scratch was almost unbearable, she was sure that the choice of fabric was no accident, but she was certainly not going to be the one to complain first – all too often she’d seen the dressing down that would be her reward if she did. “.. are simply some of the monsters you will face in our ranks.” The sudden words, from Andabar immediately in front of her, drew Kassara with a sudden jolt, from thoughts of scratching and, as the big man shouted his scripted lines, the young girl couldn’t repress an amused grin. The training was going to be hard – of that there was no doubt, and as the younger daughter of the commander of Castle Firrine, she was not likely to receive any special treatment. Still, Andabar had always liked her, even when she’d strayed from the line her mother would have preferred or she’d “borrowed” one of the castle’s horses to go exploring out in the forest, even that time she was caught kissing the stable-boy (I wonder whatever happened to him?) . Hoping that no-one else would see, she gave a quick wink to the commander, after all, she probably wouldn’t get in too much trouble.

Appearance:

Standing short and slim at 5ft. 4” and only 100 lbs., at 16 Kassara has grown into very good looking young woman despite sharing few of her mother’s features. When training or exercising she wears the standard uniform given to new recruits with leather armour and her rapier and kukri at her waist, pulling her long sandy blonde hair into an untidy ponytail to keep it out of her eyes. When not training or exercising, unless duties drag her away to more refined activities, when she dresses appropriately for court, Kassara wears relatively simple cotton clothing significantly tighter than her mother would like and wears her hair free. Kassara habitually sports a cheeky grin, especially when in the company of good looking boys.

Personality:

Despite growing up under the strict and watchful gaze of her mother, Kassara has never managed to repress her own, somewhat flighty and disobedient nature. Kassara has joined as a recruit as much because its always been expected of her as for any other reason. She makes friends easily, but often gets them into trouble by involving them in her schemes, rarely considering consequences before she acts. With boys, Kassara is an outrageous (if innocent) flirt, though (as yet) her childhood crushes have yet to develop into anything more serious than a few stolen kisses in the stables. She enjoys music for dancing to (but not just sitting around listening to) and reads voraciously, carrying a book around with her at all times. Secretly, Kassra would like to travel and see the world away from Lastwall, but in her heart she knows she’ll likely never leave the frontier.

I'm going to respectfully back out - the muse has been limited with work and I won't be able to do a concept justice.

Applying with this paladin of Shelyn, Mechanically finished, I'm going to be filling in the backstory and such in a few hours.

I'm sure I'm not thinking straight... and I'm trying not to apply.

But, I keep having this idea of a Half-Orc working twice as hard to prove himself a "patriot".

The other thing I can't get out of my head is the DM saying not to worry about DPR. And, I love to play what I call the "un-cola".

So, this Half-Orc Barbarian would use a composite bow +4 (eventually), then a scorpion whip (trip, disarm, reach), javelin, scimitar, hide shirt & shield.

18, 14, 14, 10, 12, 8

Possibly dipping into Fighter for feats and Armor Training (medium armor, move 40)... and/or Rogue for Sneak Attack damage to help the whip.

It's not optimal, but the idea of this anti-hero intrigues me. And, I can see him watching Karla's back, admiring her devotion to Gorum.

Background, he was found by a ranging unit from Lastwall, after a battle. The commander would not let zealots kill the child, and took him in.

Liberty's Edge

Would you like another player

@Gerard I was wondering if anyone would apply with a half orc. The conflict with Belkzen seems ripe with difficult role play for one. I do like optimized pcs but prefer hard fights that last 3t 3-5 rounds instead if two. Besides it's easier to scale up pcs and encounters down than the reverse.

Hey Raven? I wouldn't be too far off in assuming that the citizens of Lastwall might be a bit guarded against eastern foreigners, would I? I mean, humans are still humans, and racism is still a thing, even in Pathfinder.

Would taking Power Attack as my level 1 feat, and Bludgeoner as my free bonus feat be "expand[ing] your character in more than one direction"? I feel like having the option to do non-lethal damage without taking a huge penalty would make Urias more broad in his combat options. Possibly also a little more "knightly" as well, since he wouldn't just smash the skulls of anyone he fights.

If not that's also fine, I'll choose something else.

Quick question: For those of us Tilernos kids who have applied, is the father still alive? What does he do? (for background flavorage).

Thanks :)

Ohh, and is there a uniform we shoul be wearing?

Also, is there an extended Tilernos family? So for example, could we be cousins?

Sovereign Court

Was thinking Human Taldor Noble sent to die.
Racial Heritage (Orc) with the bonus feat.
Falcata fighter....

Seeing as Manon Tilernos is the heroic figure in the family, perhaps the father figure maintains the finances for the family? He does what he can in making sure that funds are allotted where needed and that they make it to where they are suppose to go. He could have been a driving force in Bartholomew's childhood.

Okay, I've written a background.

I believe Urias Lastwaller is complete now. Please let me know what you think if you are willing, DMRaven. Thanks!

Okay, I'm mildly confused. So, the SRD lists a Bladed Scarf as this:

1d6 base damage, 20/x2 crit range/damage, 2 lbs, Disarm, Trip.

The text is as follows:

SRD Text:
"If you are proficient with a bladed scarf, you deal 1d6 points of slashing damage to any creature that makes a successful grapple check against you.

You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls with a bladed scarf sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon.

The skill required in using such scarves effectively and not revealing their deadly nature makes them exotic weapons. If you are proficient with a bladed scarf, you deal 1d4 points of slashing damage to any creature that makes a successful grapple check against you while you wield the scarf."

This is listed as being from the Inner Sea World Guide.

When I was looking up more info on the thing (namely on how one would technically attack with one), I found an entry on the Pathfinder Wikia with the following:

Wikia text:
The Bladed scarf is a weapon developed by the Varisians. With their reputation for free and open attitude, and the fact that their performances can elicit strong emotional responses, they needed to have a weapon that blended into their costumes, but could still protect them if needed[1][2].

One side of the scarf looks like a normal, brightly colored performance scarf, while the other side has a number of blades woven into it. Because of the length of the scarf, the wielder can attack people up to ten feet away, but the flexibility allows them to also attack those the wielder finds themselves grappled with.

The source is listed as the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide and the Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide.

So uh...Which one is correct...? Is it a weapon with 10' reach that can threaten at 5', or just 5', or a standard reach weapon, or...?

That wikia is super old. The Inner Sea World Guide is the latest release, so it should be the correct one.

The RotR and CotCT player's guide versions were probably 3.5, too.

I redid Claire as a warder (zweihander sentinel) from Path of War, and also updated her personality and description (more to come on that in the next few days). I noticed that we have a lot of high charisma and social character submissions, so I figured a more int-based character with lots of knowledges would be more helpful. Also, warder is just so much better at tanking, and that's what I primarily want her to do.

What about the starting money? Minimal? Maximum? Average?

DMRaven wrote:
Hm..knew I forgot something, thank you Joshua. Take the average gold for the class although, as you said, don't worry too much about gold. It might be useful here or there and you will eventually be put on tasks a normal adventuring party will face. Much of the early combat won't rely on equipment but rather class features and skills.

@DMRaven - honestly, my first thought was... Darn, every hack (yes, pun) is going to make a Half-Orc. So I waited. Been wanting to play one, so this seemed perfect thematically.

Melee folks, shouldn't worry about the whip I'll probably take Toothy alt racial trait allowing for a bite attack and threatening/flanking. You can take the boy out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the boy.

I'm up for the RP challenge, I enjoy it. The personality will be pragmatic, reflected in his weapon choices... Something for every range/situation.

Exotic Weapon (whip) seems in order for dealing with animals, savages. Perhaps his adopted parent was a Lore Warden and fond of combat maneuvers.

Iron Will might be good as he's not a drooling zombie, easily swayed.

Thinking on other options.

Thank you Claire! Haven't seen that.

another question, sorry: can we take a drawback to get a third trait?

@Inari –Not impossible. They aren't the most trusting citizens. The Inner Sea guide is the correct stats for the scarf.

@ DM Jelani – That's absolutely acceptable. Non-damaging feats are what that bonus was intended for.

@ Kasara/Claire/Others – The Tilernos are much like any noble family, they are extensive. The woman listed in the original trait is simple the most prominent and only current member of the family in the Knights. There are of course other nobles present in other Lastwall knighthoods, in court, and involved in other organizations throughout the realm. Cousins are probable and possible.

@ Lachen – Average starting gold.

@Gerard – Random note: Gauntlets always make you threatened. Second random note: unarmed fighting may be a thing that scrubs get trained in :)

@Lachen – No, you can take Extra Traits with your bonus feat however.

Random note for all looking at Exotic weapon proficiency. As a fan of using multiple weapon types in combat, it is highly likely for Knights of Ozem to grant full members (i.e. those who survive the 10 month training period) a magical weapon that has a more powerful version of the transformative property essentially allowing Knights to swap their weapon type between anything they have proficiency in.

Hint 2: As mentioned previously, training comes with several perks. Knights are expected to be truly elite, mastering multiple styles of combat. Training in fighting against and with peculiar weapons will be part of this.

I hadn't expected so many people to be interested in using exotic weapons so hadn't bothered to mention that in the original post, figured it'd be a fun surprise later on.

Hint 3: Class features, skills and attributes will have more of an impact in play during the first couple of weeks/first month than equipment. You'll see.

I have an idea for a character that I am working on. He will be a gunslinger of some type and taking the Indebted trait.

Here is some backstory including how he met the banker's contact. Hope it matches the area.

Backstory:
When the Vogelstein's left Alkenstar they intended to take their knowledge of the advanced technology that was horded there. It was a risky thing leaving their home. Some did not want their secrets shared with the rest of the world. For selfish reasons and noble. The world wasn't ready for such widespread power. They were unable to leave with but the smallest specimens of their craft and it was a perilous journey. They to ohad their reservations and knew of the evil that could be done if such weapons fell into the wrong hands. So their choice of destination was made. They would begin with the paladin's of Lastwall. The greatest beacon of good in this world that they knew of. They arrived safely for the most part in Vellumis and began their quest. Borrowing money to start their smithy, they met Isaak Bickings. He was the only one to be willing to loan them money when they were so new to the city. Though they proved their loyalty to their new home there was still distrust of foreigners. Isaak was interested in their knowledge. Their first hint that even Lastwall wasn't the pure bastion of good that they had hoped. Their smithy was bought and materials purchased and work on creating their 'guns' began. Eckart was apprenticed and learnt their secrets too. Though they tried to keep the knowledge out of the hands of Isaak he grew more insistent on seeing that they were not squandering his money. He hoped to steal their secrets for his own benefit or at the least keep such wealth from falling into his rivals hands. There was little the poor family could do when they owed so much gold. Threats were made and when they didn't think it safe anymore they sent away to join the knights. Surely an order such as Ozem would be free from corruption and Eckart could become one and use his influence to help them. Though the Vogelstein's were but one small part in his personal business dealings, not even the sending away of their son escaped his notice. Upon entering the gates of Vigil he was met by Eldred Moyer.

"Eckart my boy. You look like you could use a drink and a meal after such a long journey all alone." He had never seen the man before but decided to sit with him inside a tavern after he revealed he knew his parents. After they had ordered and begun to eat Eldred mentioned his parents again. "Look Ecky, your parents are in trouble. The banker they owe money to has demanded, well, remuneration. You don't understand? It's like this. He isn't happy with how his investment is paying off. If they don't pay up, he will have them arrested, simple as that. Don't worry, I also have good news. That's actually why i'm here. Your parents are a small bother to Isaak, he is willing to leave them alone for now, but. He needs you to do a few things for him. There are many important people that try to join the knights. People that you may have the good fortune to meet. Maybe even become buddies with. You get my meaning?"

Eckart looks confused for a few seconds before it dawned on him. "You want me to spy on the other recruits?" Eldred made a hushing sound, "No one will be harmed my boy. I just need you to do a few things for me, give me the information I ask for and everything will be fine." Eckart nodded. "Ok, I just don't want my parents to be hurt. They are good people." Eldred nodded with him. "I know kid. We gotta do our best to keep Isaak happy ok? Now off ya go."

Hmm. I can't decide if I want to change my bonus feat into mounted combat, or maybe point blank shot.

Also, I kind of feel I backed myself into a corner gonig dex, to a point that I'd be unlikely to work with anything that isn't either ranged or finesseable. On the other hand, I'm not seeing her as a strength based warrior. Also, for narrative reasons, her int and wis shouldn't go lower than 12 or her cha 16, and that leaves precious little points left for combat stats, so dex is a neat solution there.

On the plus side, I'll be good with thrown weapons. Maybe I should see about getting Returning on that transformative weapon once were let loose.

Excellent, thank you. I think I'm finished then.
