The Long Vigil (Inactive)

Game Master DMRaven

The warriors of Vigil have been a beacon for good since the Shining Crusade. Standing against the orc hordes of Belkzen, undead swarms from Gallowspire and the demonic armies of the Worldwound, they are never short of threats to face and always in need of bodies for the fray. The elite Knights of Ozem look for only the most promising of Lastwall's recruits to take into their halls. Do you have what it takes?

101 to 140 of 140 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

It just dawned on me that I might be the only one putting forth a male Tilernos family member. Not only that, he is physically weaker than most of his sisters/cousins. With a mother that is likely preening her daughters/neices for the Knights of Ozem, I could see Bartholomew having a burning desire to prove himself not only to his feminisitic and milataristic mother, but to himself as well. To do such, he has spent countless hours training his body and mind in hopes of doing just that. In fact, it would even seem like a divine presence has been watching over him granting him a bit of luck here and there.

Any input from his potential family?

Edit: Also, this is Joshua Hirtz's character submission. I'm working on writing up his background and description, but his mechanical workup should be done for the most part. He's not so much an Archaeologist as he is someone that studies and trains himself to prepare for any situation. He is driven by not only his need to prove himself, but his urge to protect those around him. While he might be physically weaker than most of his family, he is a Tilernos family member none the less and the call to serve runs in his veins.

Here's Oterisk's submission. Everything should be in order. The fact that there's a Surtovan in the NPC camp is great. It works very well for my backstory and might be a great person to play off from. For my bonus feat, I picked up Elven Spirit for the bonus to defeating SR. I know it will come into play eventually, but now it helps with identification. He should be fairly good at that.

He's set up to be quite the magic user in addition to his martial style. Having the extra Skill points was great, I was able to hit all of the knowledge class skills and have enough left over for Ride and even a point in perception. I don't mind playing a bit of an outsider and this thing looks fun.

DMRaven, would you be against the following feat selection for first level?

  • Fast Learner - Human
  • Improvisation - 1st Level Feat
  • Improved Improvisation - Free Campaign Feat

or

  • Fast Learner - Human
  • Improvisation - 1st Level Feat
  • Lingering Performance - Free Campaign Feat

I think the second would make more sense considering what you have been saying. It would make sense for him to gain the Improved Improvisation at level 3 after having been trained with a multitude of different weapons.

If so, I think I might rework my character some to make him feel more at home in Lastwall. I reallly would like to boost his strenght a little and give him a longsword as his weapon as opposed to the rapier.

Sovereign Court

In regards to traits. Are we allowed to take more than one 'campaign traits' or do we need extra traits for that.

I'm taking inspiration from one of the many Arthurian legends. Particularly from an 80s cartoon 'Prince Valiant'.

Mmmm, in regards to being proficient with various weapons/flexibility: I also imagine her as much more of a dextrous, "rhythmic" combatant, but I went ahead and took 2 points out of her INT and put it into her STR so she isn't completely done if she has to use a non-finesseable weapon. She basically fights with a rhythm, dancing through combat.

Edit: I just realized as I was looking at potential traits, that Heirloom Weapon lists "Gives proficiency with selected weapon" as one of the options you can select. That works perfectly for a trait, since I'd originally planned to use Heirloom Weapon anyway (though I never noticed the proficiency bit there before). This also lets me select Weapon Proficiency with something else, perhaps a fighting fan or an urumi. ^^

@Dm Jelani

Spoiler:

Urias looks fine mechanically and story-wise with a few caveats. The Knights expect people of all experiences to attempt joining from young nobles (14-16 years old) to veterans of the crusades looking to gain more prestige. However, regardless of age they tailor their training for the “new/young” warriors. They expect obedience (something a soldier can do well) but also train from the ground up. Urias is likely to be one of the few older scrubs and despite his age won't be treated any differently from the younger ones.

@Joshua Hirtz – Don't worry about matching the fluff of an archetype exactly. There are a lot of mechanical ways to put together different concepts. If it offers something over basic bard that you want, no reason to worry about including its fluff much. I'm always a fan of the crafty rogues that are alchemists or stranger results.

@ Nightdeath – One campaign trait only.

Sovereign Court

So the listed 'campaign trait' which is listed on the 1st page for this game is limited to one only and cannot be bypassed by the feat Extra Traits?

Just to confirm as I'm creating my submission now.

One more question, Raven. Would you, as a DM, consider an Urumi a type of whip?

Urumi text:
Commonly known as a whip sword, this deadly weapon is fashioned from one to four 5-foot-long, razor-sharp blades of flexible steel. The weapon is wielded by whipping the blades at one’s opponent. The coiled blade is fine and flexible enough to be worn as a belt.

The text only refers to it as a whip sword, and I just wanted to know before I listed the attack modifiers for it, so I know whether you'd consider it finesseable or not. Thank you for answering when you can. ^^
I'll still be using it, mind you, as the temptation to whirl about with a whip sword is far too enticing.

It wouldn't happen to be light, would it?

No, as that would automatically qualify it =P

Benefit: With a light weapon, elven curve blade, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.

It's a one-handed "whip-sword", hence why I was asking for DM clarification. From what I read, it works the same way (at least in terms of how one attacks with it), though it's also much more dangerous than a normal whip. I just went ahead and put the attack bonus as my Str mod for now, unless the DM says otherwise. It's an odd weapon, and while it'll be nice if it *does* qualify, I'm still using it even if it doesn't.

Sovereign Court

I submit the following for entry.
Background not up yet.

Dalgar Carver

Merkay, the character sheet should be good. ^^

Inari Character Sheet

I've got a decent idea of what her background will be, but I won't be able to type it up until tonight.

DMRaven, I changed Claire to a different class, so she's not a cavalier anymore. I also tweaked her stafs and personality a bit.

DM Raven:
Good point, I kinda forgot about that. I'll lower his age by a couple of years. He'll still be older, but not that much older.

I might change Inari's age to 15 instead of 16, actually...

RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8

Sounds interesting. I am working on a martial halfling, trying to decide between a hunter with a roc companion or a beast rider Cavalier (although I have another application for that guy).

Gerard Nisroc here... nearly done.

Regarding "Taldor Noble", could the adoptive parent (Lore Warden) have passed the trait down to the oprhaned Half-Orc.

I see it as adding more depth/character... The stigma of being the Half-Orc and the weight of the world on your shoulders to represent your "father's heritage".

This is a great RP character, but he won't really come into his own until level 4-5 or so, as far as exceptional damage in melee and combat maneuvers.

I am changing my character to start off as a monk instead and become a gunslinger at level 2. So he will be good at melee(unarmed) when forced to but best at long range shooting.

Sovereign Court

Dalgar Carver A Brawler going towards Falcata wielder. Racial Heritage (Orc).

He smirked.

He wasn't here for glory.

He wasn't here for riches.

He was here for one thing and one thing only.

To Find a reason why he was born.

He was a human with Orc blood. Not half blood nor a true Noble.

A Boy seeking to be a Man.

Minor change:

Swapped out Two-Weapon Fighting for Combat Expertise - I think this should make her a little more flexible, although she'll still suck with most weapons. Hopefully her Agile Manouvers and Deeds will be enough to see her through.

Don't envy you your job Raven - There's some great submissions to select from!

That falcata trait really helps make a halfling viable in combat!

Sandor Trevic was the son of a halfling butler in Taldor, who was also a spymaster for a noble family. Sandor had a natural affinity for animals, so he grew up working in the stables and kennels. After his father retired, he was given the title of knight for his services. However, Sandor longed to prove his own valor, and joined up with some recruits headed to Lastwall. With his "dog" (actually a wolf) he hopes to prove his skills as a scout and a fighter in spite of his small size.

I took the Well-prepared feat. I'm hoping you will allow the use of Survival rather than Sleight of hand (GM option given in feat text).

Lachen is ready.

Alright, I've done as many changes to Eilidh's domain/inquisition and as many minor edits to her background as I can and still stay sane, so I guess she's ready.

Silver Crusade

Can we Multiclass?

Sovereign Court

Is there a reason why we shouldn't? The gm indicated that the PCs would be pretty well rounded and have a wide range of skills and actions available to them.

Multiclassing might just help the PCs acheive that.

Waiting for GM to answer would be best.
Just my $0.00002.

Nightdeath – One campaign trait.

Inari – Not counting as a whip.

Orne/Gerar Nisroc – Yes, taldor noble can be adoptive.

Sandor Trevic – No problem with Survival used instead.

Buddara Night – Yes.

My monk-to-become-gunslinger is ready as can be. I have an alias standing by.
Feats are: PBS(1st), PS(human bonus), IUS(monk), SF(Monk), Dodge(monk bonus), Mobility(extra 'non-damaging' feat). Though it is helpful in combat. If you want me to take a different extra bonus feat just let me know.

Personality and Appearance:

Personality
Eckart has taught himself control since he was a boy, his emotions, his words, his actions, everything. He was always fascinated bu the teachings of the monks. He managed to get his hands on one of their books and from that learnt some of their teachings. He is always very careful with his words lest he creates an enemy. He is always extra careful around those of greater power and wealth than him (pretty much everyone) and tries his best to be respectful. Though he retains the teachings and virtues of the monks he knows that he does not possess the discipline to become anything more than an initiate.

Appearance
Eckart is above average height which exagerates his slimness. Blue eyes and blonde hair make him seem 'pretty' and several girls have complemented him as such though he dislikes being called that. He possesses little but the few things his parents gave him and an unfinished musket of his own making though he shows no one as of yet.

Backstory:
When the Vogelstein's left Alkenstar they intended to take their knowledge of the advanced technology that was horded there. It was a risky thing leaving their home. Some did not want their secrets shared with the rest of the world. For selfish reasons and noble. The world wasn't ready for such widespread power. They were unable to leave with but the smallest specimens of their craft and it was a perilous journey. They to ohad their reservations and knew of the evil that could be done if such weapons fell into the wrong hands. So their choice of destination was made. They would begin with the paladin's of Lastwall. The greatest beacon of good in this world that they knew of. They arrived safely for the most part in Vellumis and began their quest. Borrowing money to start their smithy, they met Isaak Bickings. He was the only one to be willing to loan them money when they were so new to the city. Though they proved their loyalty to their new home there was still distrust of foreigners. Isaak was interested in their knowledge. Their first hint that even Lastwall wasn't the pure bastion of good that they had hoped. Their smithy was bought and materials purchased and work on creating their 'guns' began. Eckart was apprenticed and learnt their secrets too. Though they tried to keep the knowledge out of the hands of Isaak he grew more insistent on seeing that they were not squandering his money. He hoped to steal their secrets for his own benefit or at the least keep such wealth from falling into his rivals hands. There was little the poor family could do when they owed so much gold. Threats were made and when they didn't think it safe anymore they sent away to join the knights. Surely an order such as Ozem would be free from corruption and Eckart could become one and use his influence to help them. Though the Vogelstein's were but one small part in his personal business dealings, not even the sending away of their son escaped his notice. Upon entering the gates of Vigil he was met by Eldred Moyer.

"Eckart my boy. You look like you could use a drink and a meal after such a long journey all alone." He had never seen the man before but decided to sit with him inside a tavern after he revealed he knew his parents. After they had ordered and begun to eat Eldred mentioned his parents again. "Look Ecky, your parents are in trouble. The banker they owe money to has demanded, well, remuneration. You don't understand? It's like this. He isn't happy with how his investment is paying off. If they don't pay up, he will have them arrested, simple as that. Don't worry, I also have good news. That's actually why i'm here. Your parents are a small bother to Isaak, he is willing to leave them alone for now, but. He needs you to do a few things for him. There are many important people that try to join the knights. People that you may have the good fortune to meet. Maybe even become buddies with. You get my meaning?"

Eckart looks confused for a few seconds before it dawned on him. "You want me to spy on the other recruits?" Eldred made a hushing sound, "No one will be harmed my boy. I just need you to do a few things for me, give me the information I ask for and everything will be fine." Eckart nodded. "Ok, I just don't want my parents to be hurt. They are good people." Eldred nodded with him. "I know kid. We gotta do our best to keep Isaak happy ok? Now off ya go."

Really wanted to make a full Iroran Paladin(See Inner Sea Combat Guide) but couldn't, I really wanted her to be mounted. So my first request would be to ask,

1)Is their some way for her to aquire a mount or animal companion ?

2)The second thing would be is if you could make a house rules alteration to the class allowing me to make my bond with an animal companion instead of unarmed strikes?

Personality and Appearance:

Sleek like a cat Buddara's cuts and curves seem to project a strength and fluidity possessed by a round stone in a flowing river. Her dark skin gives the exotic and deadly allure of Calstria herself. While capable of feeling emotions herself discipline rare lets her express more than she intends. While her monks clothing reveals very little of what lies beneath her movements in them say it all, they say dedicated, deadly, efficient. She wears her long hair in tight corn rows upon her head, rarely ever letting them out. She radiates an intensity that the is almost oppressive yet some how inspiring. Often the first to action she does not lack in initiative nor is she the type to act too impulsively.

Character Backstory:

When Buddara was 5 years old her parents murdered by demons. Being faith worshipers Irori she was sent to be raised at an all female Temple. The she was taught to train her body and mind to self perfection. She was able to take this much of this training and excelled beyond all of her counter parts except in one area. She deeply internalized the idea of perfection and was relentless in her pursuits. However she was never quite able to stretch the concept to its fullest. By this it is meant that she never able to let go. Never able to quell the driving fury within herself, this led her away from a more than basic understanding of the spiritual aspects. She instead became more dogmatic and intent on making physical changes to push herself and others toward perfection. At the age of 15 she became one of the temples best teachers of the physical aspects of the martial arts.

However the fury building in her was never quite satisfied and she longed to bring her teachings and that of Irori to the outside world. So she requested permission to preach in the street about the ways of Irori, his truth and light. So 5 days a week she would go out into the street and perform feats of strength and stamina, and how Irori's teaching had allowed her to develop the ability to achieved such things. One day while explaining the search for self perfection to a Knight on the street, she was called out. When she asked the Knight what could he possibly mean he said "Your search for self perfection is meaningless. Some of us don't have the time with such nonsense. We have real problems to deal with like the Orcs, demons, and Worldwound. My whole family was killed by Demon's and I will have my revenge. I am going to join the Knights of Ozem to see that that no else ever has to go that experience." Buddara responded with by saying "My parents were also killed by demons, but that has not prevented me from seeking self-perfection." The Knight starred back at her and said "Huh, women" and stalked off into the crowd. Having learned long ago not to deal with rejection and not to respond to such statements with anger Buddara calmed herself. And came to the sudden realization that this was it, this was what was holding her back, that not dealing her parents death, with the silent fury within was what was holding her back from reaching the next level in her personal development.

With this realization came the question of how to confront this problem. Thinking back to what the Knight said she decided that she too would become a knight of Ozem. And through confronting the demons so too confront her own past and rage.

Like many of the residents of Hiyosai, Inari carries the physical traits that many consider to mark individuals as descendants of the sunken city of Sangoshi. Namely, she boasts an unusual fairness to her skin, complimented by the almost jade-like shade of green to her eyes. The young girl wears her light blonde hair in a bob cut, and seeing her with her hair any longer than that is incredibly unlikely. During battle, she wears a lamellar cuirass over her clothes, along with her bladed scarf around her neck, and an urumi as a belt, given its flexibility. A lean build allows her to maneuver around the battlefield easily, though it does not lend itself well to brute force and tasks that require more strength than grace.

Personality:
Inari's personality most often lead others to see her as too relaxed, especially when she begins dancing. Typically cheery and carefree, she carries herself with a reserve of energy rarely seen, though there's another side to her that occasionally slips out, one that's at least somewhat calmer. She often refers to happenings with the words "rhythm" and "beat", and indeed, she claims that she can "feel" the rhythm of a fight, and take it for her own. How literally this is meant to be taken, or whether it's to believed or not, remains to be seen.

Since she was confronted by the corrupt banker Isaak Bickings and his agent, Eldred Moyer, she seems to occasionally slip out of reality during conversations or while walking around, carrying her parents' fate on her shoulders. Of course, keeping them safe means lying to so many others, but surely, it's a weight she must bear. Such is the argument that rages beneath the happy visage she wears on the surface.

Background:
Born in Minkai, Inari grew up in the province of Hiyosai. While it wasn't a terrible place to live by a longshot, Minkai was coming closer and closer to an all-out civil war, and Inari's parents feared for their only daughter's well-being as a result. While they were able to work comfortably, her parents did what they could to provide, straining their bodies for every gold piece they could, saving up for a grand fund until eventually, the pair had amassed a sizable pile of gold. With the funding out of the way, the family traveled across sea and land for a new home, following rumors of a fortified city, Lastwall. Surely, that would be safer place to raise a child, even if it meant leaving the home of their ancestors behind.

So it was that the family migrated to Lastwall with the money they'd saved up with their hard labor, but life wouldn't be what they expected it to be like. Not only were there threats surrounding them, but they weren't even exempt from conflict inside the city's walls. While they were human, they were also different. They weren't natives. They looked different, they sounded somewhat different...and Inari was no exemption from this rule. There were many times when she was blamed for some form of mischief, even if the premise made no sense. Racism was prominent, even in regards to interracial conflicts. Thinking it was safer for Inari to stay out of "trouble", she was encouraged to study her heritage, in the form of various tomes, scrolls, and artifacts from their family. The most notable of these possessions were a bladed scarf, passed down from generation to generation, and a single urumi. The scarf was practically a piece of art, showing the fate of her ancestors through pictures and the finest artsmanship, slowly blending from a crimson to a blue. From her research, Inari picked up knowledge of the old times (to an extent), including the art of several dances passed down, just as the scarf and urumi had been. And so, she began to dance, practicing day in and out. Her body would become a mobile piece of artwork once she mastered the maneuvers, whirling in and out like the lightest of breezes.

Despite the relative period of happiness and peace Inari had been graced with, it was not to last. Near her sixteenth birthday, she'd come to discover an inkling of the problems that threatened the city, and while it wasn't her birthplace, she considered it her home nonetheless. A chance to help, perhaps that was what was needed for people to give her family a break! Even if it wasn't, she certainly couldn't pass up a chance to improve her dance and tell tales of whatever creatures she might encounter along the way! Unfortunately, news of this reached the ears of one Isaak Bickings at an inopportune time. Nobody knows quite how it happened, but the last few payments her parents sent to the banker for payment had "gone missing", leaving them in crippling debt. Days later, Inari was called by Isaak's agent, Eldred Moyer, for a conversation. Isaak was a shrewd banker, but a "kind one", he said. He was willing to keep her parents out of prison if she performed a simple act for him. She was to spy and watch for certain individuals of interest, giving any details to Eldred and Isaak when commanded. It was blackmail, but she had no choice. What started as an endeavor of pure intent had become corrupted, and as she stood in line alongside her fellow recruits, she felt the true weight of the situation strike home at last. She'd be giving the entire town a reason to hate her...

Waiting for the judgment, crossing fingers

Orne, the Noble Savage is ready.

Not sure how much background was required, he was simply brought to Lastwall at a young age by a Taldoran commander leading a reconnaissance patrol. Cleaned up and made "civil".

He's spent all his time since trying to prove he's good enough to just about everybody.
