The Expendables (Inactive)

Game Master Keddah

When a group of seasoned adventurers get contacted by a noble offering them a magnificent reward for a lesser job they jump at the chance... but as always things are not what they look like.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Now that I've got the taste of PbP Gamemastering and got addicted to it I have decided to use a select group of volunteers as my guinea pigs for a homebrew campaign based in Forgotten Realms. This will be a test run for a long term campaign I'm writing for my IRL group.

The Setting: The Forgotten Realms:

What can I tell about Forgotten Realms that most of you don't already know?. It's a high magic, high adventure setting inhabited by some of the most recognisable characters of modern fantasy literature, Drizzt Do'Urden, Artemis Entreri, Elminster Aumar, The Bhaalspawn.

The game will begin in the area known as the Sword Coast specifically in the Friendly Arm Inn, a crossroads in between Baldur's Gate, Beregost and Candlekeep.

The timeline will start at 1.372 DR, a few weeks after Bane's return. Consider it placed as of 3.0 Campaign Setting.

The Characters: Rules:

- Starting level: 6
- Races: All core races allowed, Bestiaries I & II races depending on DM consent.
- Classes: All classes from Core, APG and UM allowed. All Paizo archetypes allowed. Other classes upon consideration
- Alignmentes: All alignments allowed, will try to keep a group with compatible alignments.
- Feats: All Core, APG and UM feats allowed. Other Paizo feats upon consideration.
- Abilities: Point buy 20, no ability over 18 or under 9 before racial modifiers.
- Traits: 2 traits, no regional traits.
- Money: Level 4 wealth

The Characters: Background:

Now this is the most restrictive part of the game, characters must be seasoned adventurers who have never been able to hold onto their triumphs, be it because they have always failed, because other people took credit for their feats, or because they just felt uneasy with it.

Backgrounds requisites will be:
Reason for first adventuring.
Reason for keeping adventuring.
At least one enemy, one friend, a one old adeventuring mate (friendly, unfriendly, dead...)
An objective.
Anything else you think of.

The Players:

I expect players interested in a heavy roleplay game, able to post AT LEAST once a day but with a preference for those that will do it more often. I will try to take a look at the candidates previous history but will not exclude players new to PbP.

The GM:

I am a very experienced IRL Player and Gamemaster still getting his footing in PbP but heavily enjoying it. I will try to let the characters bend the story but sometimes will try to redirect it. I am not too experienced with Pathfinder and have been accused by my IRL players of being a Killer DM when creating original encounters... but I am not! Honest!

I will try to post several times everyday but Real Life will always trump gaming, if I can't post for several days I will try to warn you in advance. I hope I can keep with this game since it's a campaign that has been in my mind for a long time.

Ah, English is not my native language so I may make mistakes, feel free to correct me, I won't feel offended and I hope it will help me improve.

I won't be accepting submissions with no background although I will answer if questions about a concept are made before writing the actual background. I'm not fixing a closing date for submissions since I don't know how much interest to expect.

I hope many people are interested!

DM KEDDAH! omg finally your opening another game :) sorry i applied to your KM game with Hu5tru lol unfortunately there was way too many good submissions for me to get in oh well :)

Well first how do you feel about leadership and mounted combat? sorry just trying to get a feel before I make whole character :)

though I am thinking of elf emmisary calvalier just as a thought been wanting to make him for a while based off a char in a book i really liked

Raventhorn:
I don't think leadership would fit too well to the idea of a character always a step away from recognition. I don't have anything against mounted combat (I love the Cavalier class despite its weaknesses) but I must warn you that, at least for the first adventures of the campaign it will be pretty urban.

Keddah:
not a problem emmisary allows calvalier to move without horse for a little bit so ill just make him I only asked about leadership cause trying to make a charter someday to be able to ride gryphon, pegasus, giant eagle that sort of thing instead of getting some random npc if that helps otherwise will start creating backstory immediately. :) thanks again for the chance

I would love to join a Forgotten Realms campaign.

It won't take me long at all to bring this character up to campaign requirements.

Raventhorn:
I'll be waiting, I really felt leaving Magnus out of the other game, but as you said there were SO MANY great submissions

Israfel:
I'll be waiting, although I must admit Summoners still scare me a little bit so many things to keep track of...

DM Keddah:
I would not worry too much. She's very much a themed character for a concept I've been playing with. She's far from an optimized build.

I've just got to take my time building her up to 6'th level and setting my background for the Forgotten Realms.

I've never played PbP before, but I am definitely interested in this campaign. I'd like to play a Lawful Good Fighter who originally began her career as the foot soldier of a local noble, and continued as such for around 3 years, but who has recently resigned do to ethical qualms about the actions and motives of the noble in question. At the moment her objective is to find a new cause to champion and leader to serve under. She's currently resting at the Friendly Arm Inn on the way to Baldur's Gate to see if she can find a more ethical noble to offer her services to, but if she were to find an adventuring group doing something she felt was a worthy task she may abandon this plan and offer her services to that group.

I'll get a character sheet up soon.

EDIT: As to her lack of renown for her deeds, it's because she's former military, and her she her time following orders, not her own plans, so her accomplishments are credited to her commanders, not her. To top it off, she's not particularly boastful or glory seeking.

You said you might consider other classes, what about the Swashbuckler from Tome of Secrets? Very Sword Coastery :)

I'm sorry should have been more specific, nothing not in the SRD or in the books I named since I probably don't have it.

Gallahad0430:
Although maybe the Swashbuckler archetype or the Mobile Fighter archetype can fit your concept

Evening Glory:
Interesting, I'll be waiting to see how you expand on it

Keddah:

(unsure of tribal rituals of most elves in the forgotten realms will critique as you see fit :) )

Jermayan Thalysaer Myl Shasos shor bai cysti Swiftrider

Jermayan served as most of his ancestors have, protecting the woods of his people from invaders such as trolls, orcs, or even malicious humans. he earned his horse in battle by resuing the chieftens sun under fire from orc archers. Once he was given this great boon, he was allowed to wander throughout the land as long as he came back to the tribe to tell of what was going on in the outside world. Becoming an outridr of his people was an honor on his families name and was given his second name Thalysaer Myl, "favored son". Slowly Jermayan through battle and hard won skirmishes won expierence and reknown earning his third name Swiftrider, or how the humans called him as he darted in and out of the battles like a hawk. However he never claimed credit for fights always deferring to the humans who had given their lives. Jermayan looked upon humans with favor, unlike most of his tribe he saw them as a diverse and passionante race capable of great love and great triumph. This is how he came to know Jon Rivers, a dear human friend that taught him the way of the knight not only in combat but also in conduct and mannerism. One night Jon invited him to a ball thrown in the honor of the heroes. Hesitant Jermayan accepted the offer even though he knew he should be getting back to his people.

After the ball jermayan made his way slowly back to his tribe, however as he grew closer he saw signs of a massive orc war party, their path littered with squalor and the burning ruins of small villages that had been put up near his forest home, some of these villages his father had watched the very foundations set into the soft ground. Growing worried Jermayan rushed back through the forest only to see the horrible remains of his people littered about the village. he had failed, he had been too late inn warning them. The tracks looked fresh and could not be a few days old and as Jermayan looked about him in despair he heard another horse come close.

In fury he had turned only to see Jon, his dear friend, sorrow mixed with his normally cheerful features. Jon had known of the orc party, they had heard reports of them passing close and had feared for his elven friend. After many minutes of arguiing Jon made Jermayan see reason and helped him bury the dead. however when they left Jermayan streaked his face with the ashes of his home taking his final name Shasos shor bai cysti or "Warrior with no home".

Finally Jermayan learned the name of the orc cheiften that had led the attack on his village. (Keddah feel free to insert name if you want or let me know and ill make one up.

I went to a great translator English to Elfvish To find out those words hope you like the character background does it work? )

I've got a preliminary character sheet for you. I changed her class to Ranger, but that doesn't effect her background. She still served a noble as a soldier, just not as common line infantry. She was a scout, and I think a Ranger with the Guide and Skirmisher archetypes fits that well.

I haven't purchased her magic items yet. I'm waiting for approval of her stats and non-magical gear as they stand.

EDIT: I also think it might be interesting if the noble who's employ she left was her maternal grandfather (A Lawful Evil Fighter). He had Camilla's father assassinated and blamed another noble for the deed, which was the catalyst for Camilla leaving him. What with him having murdered her father, they'll definitely meet again, especially since her mother (Lawful Neutral Rogue), who Camilla does not want to cut off contact with, is in serious denial about the man's evil and responsibility for her husband's death. Camilla doesn't have the resources to take him on at the moment, however.

I am very interested. Not sure the concept yet, but one important question: Can I have ties to/be apart of/or maybe one day become a part of, one of the many organizations of the Realms???

Evening Glory:
It seems mostly alright rules wise. I will ask you to reroll your HP on the forum or choose 5 (whatever you prefer) if Camilla is accepted. You have still to choose your 2 traits. Oh, and I see you wrote that you had +4 skill points at level 1, you actually get only 1, that was 3.x, anyway your total skill points adds up correctly so I think it my have been an oversight.

Background wise, I find it interesting, a very lawful family she has! *wink*

Monkeygod:
Of course you can, or you may want to acquire them during the campaign, whatever fits your concept. I'll be waiting to read about it!

I'm fine rerolling HP.

I edited the background a bit. She fully intends to see her grandfather punished at some point, but at the moment she has neither the resources to fight him, nor the influence to have someone else punish him. She also has a sister (Lawful Good Wizard) as badly in denial about her grandfather as her mother, and still in active military service to the man.

The reason her family is so lawful is that they are nobility, and rule a fair amount of land (though Camilla knows better than to show her face in this land after standing against her grandfather). As such, they tend towards law.

One more thing. I added the Skirmisher archetype to her, so she's a Ranger with both the Guide and Skirmisher archetypes, which do not conflict with each other.

Umm evening glory not to nit pick but you cant have two diff archtypes for same class

Raventhorn wrote:

Actually, the Advanced Player's Guide says you can if they do not replace the same class features. It's on Page 72. The two archetypes I chose do not conflict with each other.

Working on story now and will post it shortly, just wanted your view on concept. Basically a young fighter that's very skilled, but not very responsible. He lives beyond his means and has a weakness for gambling and parties. He is of very humble origins (farm in the wilderness) and hates his background. He tries to hide it through his social skills and pretended old nobility heritage.

She's right, I often do it as I like my rangers spell-less and most other archetypes don't replace or change that class feature.

Sovereign Court

Evening Glory is right. Currently there is the Magus with the Blade Bound and Kensai archetypes making the rounds (sorta broken).

OMG I DIDNT KNOW!!!!

I can so do my ultimate char now THANK YOU!!!!!

Emmisary and Beast Rider Calvalier...is that ok? Pretty much all I want to ride is an Elk lol

I wonder if it would be all right for me to submit a fighter or Lion (Tiger) Shaman for this recruitment thread :) Will have him up in just a bit, my landline computer does not have updated Herolab documents. :) Very interested, will throw a character together I've been wanting to play soon :)

EDIT: quick question, would you be willing to allow the Klar weapon? It's essentially a short sword attached a buckler, available in the Rise of the Runelords Campaign :) If not I will stick with a spiked shield.

Dotting for later.

Huzzah! DM_Keddah! Another of your Kingmaker rejects here. By all, did you mean gunslingers?! Don't have time to stat out now, but human gunslinger from Lantan. Why is he adventuring? Because guns and technology are amazing! The world needs to know about this. Why does it never work out? Because no one believes in his technology. Who needs guns when we have fireball? Why do you keep adventuring? Because someone's going to believe me, I just know it!

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Hi, I'm new to PbP and Pathfinder, hopefully this isn't a showstopper for me.

A PF campaign set in FR sounds like the best of both worlds, I'm very interested and will come up with a character later today.

The Exchange

I'm thinking Vivisectionist Alchemist, but I'm too tired to really think anything out at this point.

hey Lloyd he did say classes from core apg and Um not UC sorry if I misread but thought id warn you about making gunslinger

Dotting for interest since I like both heavy rp games and the forgotten realms setting. I am also likely to hit on Artemis should we actually get the chance to meet him. ;)

How do you feel about Witches? I'd like to submit one, most likely with her Patron being one of Healing. (Unless you get too many other heal type characters and then I'll change it.)

True, but he did say others would be considered, and I really want to play a gunslinger in FR. It would just be so silly. (I do not say this to dis gunslingers or FR. I was introduced to FR by Baldur's Gate II, and the book Spellfire, and I'm just trying to see fit. All I end up with is giggles, but that may be the lack of sleep acting out)

Ya but theres no such thing as firearms in FR to my knowledge (drizzt fan here) pretty sure crossbows were even on the skimpy side

also im extremely bias against the idea of gunslingers so dont pay any attention to me lol

Raventhorn:
Well, technically you can't be a Emissary - Beast Rider since both change the same class feature (armor proficency). I find the table at the end of the page is really useful for that kind of comparisons. But since I am a nice happy GM (and no Elk is going to save you if I want you dead) I will give you my permission

Ragathiel:
No problem with the Lion Shaman, and the Klar is available (The ISWG version don't know if they're different). Only problem I see is lions or tigers are not very common in the Sword Coast (that is to say, they are totally unknown of outside of circuses) but that shouldn't be a problem.

Monkeygod:
I must say I'm not a fan of mixing 3.5 sources with Pathfinder but if you say which PC you were thinking about I will have a look and tell you my decission

Lloyd Jackson:
Well, as you've been told firearms are VERY sparce in the Forgotten Realms, that is to say they're completely unknown of outside of Lantan, the churches and powers that be in the rest of the Realms would be wary of a weapon putting so much power in the hands of untrained people. And getting replacements or ammo will be a pain in th ass. But, if you think you can cope with it you're welcome to submit your gunslinger. Oh and only Early Firearms of course.
You're both welcome to submit your ideas!

Edgar Lamoureux:
Well, then get some sleep and then you can think! *wink*

Joy:
I like witches, they're not overpowered and may be left bahind if everybody optimizes but they have so many interesting quirks... I have played an evil one with very high disguise who went around villages spreading the Pox then came back dressed as a cleric and healed everybody... he was such a b*stard.

Oh, and there's very little chance your characters meet any big NPC during the campaign, they've got the bad habit of taking the spotligh.

I've got most of my numbers down, I just need to work on rewriting my appearance / background to account for level / campaign setting.

Sovereign Court

Here's the rest of the details for Frederik.

background:
Frederik was raised on a farm in the wilderness of the Sword Coast. Growing up, he was always enthralled by the stories of his uncle, Deridan. His uncle was a somewhat famous adventurer and had retired to Neverwinter. Frederik's father however, was not a big fan of his brother. He frowned upon Frederik's passion for Deridan's stories and was constantly enforcing his more "practical" views on his son. Needless to say, this chaffed against Frederick and, at an early age, he ran off from the farm. Though big and strong as benefited a lad raised in the tough world of farming in the outback, Frederick was also quick-witted and charming. Arriving in Baldur's Gate, he immediately concocted a story about his past "noble heritage", drawing heavily on things he had learned from his uncle's stories. He met with some success and met a young noble, Taryen Forsmuth. Taryen and Frederik were soon an inseperable pair, carousing and gambling. Frederik did not want to impose on his friend's charity however and soon began looking for work. Taryen scoffed at the idea of someone of the "old blood" becoming a common laborer and instead directed Frederik to some friends that were looking to gain some notoriety (and hopefully treasure) by adventuring in the wilderness. This led to a somewhat successful life of adventuring. Unfortunately, Frederick's extravagant tastes and poor fiscal management always seem to leave him in rough financial straits and he finds himself needing to go out once again to risk life and limb.

Frederik:
Frederik is a canny fighter. He relies on intellect to gain tactical advantages in a fight by use of feints and well placed blows. He also uses taunts and boasts to intimidate or enrage his foes so they make mistakes. He plays upon the false first impression of a big, heavily armored fighter to surprise people in tense situations and is not averse to talking through a dispute instead of fighting. He has a weakness for gambling and women (thus his money problems) and it is over a woman that he has earned the undying enmity of Darrian Frist, another young noble that is distantly related to the Silvershields. Darrian has made it a point of always questioning Fredericks "ambiguous" background and this has led to several fights. Though neither has been seriously injured as of yet, everyone else is worried that the situation will eventually lead to something serious.

I think I've decided on a Tiefling Witch with the Enchantment Patron. Her mother claims that she was the result of an affair with an Incubus, hence her choosing the Enchantment Patron. She's currently traveling down the Sword Coast to get away from a rather vengeful wife who also happened to be an accomplished wizardress (she didn't know that part when she seduced the woman's husband).

I've got a long day planned ahead, but I'll try to get an alias up later this evening or so and sketch out the character.

Background:
Born the only daughter of a teamster, Israfel has spent her entire life on the road, visiting most of the major cities of the Forgotten Realms at one point in time or another.

Growing up on the road has never made for an easy life, or a dull one. Israfel has traveled with, and befriended, a vast assortment of caravan guards, adventurers and pilgrims over the years. She's studied with many of them, picking tricks here, small pieces of knowledge there. When she was 13 she befriended an elderly Warrior, Byron McCalister, who traveled with her fathers caravan for nearly a year towards the promised riches of the Calimsham. During the trip, he taught her the use of his weapons, the Katana and the Wakizashi. Her father arranged the purchase of a set for her prior to departing Calisham with wagon loads of exotic goods for the markets of Waterdeep.

Israfel's Adventuring career began involuntarilly several month after departing Calisham, when the caravan was ambushed by a hoard of bandits under the command of the half-orc pyromancer Margash One-eye. My father was killed and the caravan was destroyed. I survived only due to the sacrifice of the caravan's wizard, Byron McCalister, who teleported me across the Realms to his home in Shoun before being consumed by fire.

It has taken me eight years to work my way back across the realms. I've walked the streets of Thay, and crossed the Black Road through the Anauroch, and worked my way down the Sword Coast. I will one day track down Margash, and he will answer for his crimes. It's been a long journey through, and one that has strained my limited resources. I take work as a caravan guard when necessary, travel alone when I must.

I have never allowed my fathers final gift to leave my possession, nor have I lost my faith, even when all else has been lost to me. Along the way I've made many friends. Janos Greycload, the ranger who call the Anauroch home, Darliana Twoblades, the halfing scout with the sharp with and sharper swords, and Montollio Silversong, the gnome Geomancer with a talent for creating fascinating devices from silver.

I'm still fleshing out the numbers in character sheet, but my general idea is a Ftr2/Monk4 specializing in combat maneuvers.

The backstory behind the character is that

Spoiler:

he was a tough guy who used to brag about how no one could beat him in a fist-fight, until he was handily beaten by a travelling martial arts master from Kara-Tur. Humbled, he began following the master around until he was reluctantly accepted as an apprentice. They adventured together for a while until they broke up over an ethical argument. The character is now on a quest to gain the wisdom his master accused him of lacking.

Will post a fully detailed char in the next few hours.

Hi DM Keddah

I am submitting Malstei Alenuath a Moon Elf Ranger/Sorcerer (the build will ultimately be an Arcane Archer). He has a number of posts in a defunct PBP if you would like to get a feel for his personality. I will use some of those events for his background.

Background:

Reason for first adventuring -
Growing up in Evereska he felt that the elven people turned their backs on the forestlands they once protected. He left Evereska in order to do so feeling that one elf can make a difference. He dislikes elven isolationist policies but has thus far feels disconnected from the world of men (part of the reason for his dour moods).

Reason for keeping adventuring -
Mal spent some time with a small adventuring band foiling the plot of the God of Assassins Bhaal. During this venture he had a near death experience where Aerdrie herself reached out and saved Mal's life. Since then his faith in the Goddess has grown and he takes daily morning devotion to her. Mal's arrows seem to fly straighter and strike truer ever since his encounter. Once his small adventuring band reached Baldur's Gate it became obvious that the trail of the enemies had gone cold. Mal parted from his heroic friends and took on guard duty with a caravan heading to the south.

At least one enemy, one friend, a one old adeventuring mate (friendly, unfriendly, dead...)-
Friend - His old adventuring companion Solaria. A Halfling Summoner. Mal felt a kniship with her because of her shyness.
Old Adventuring Mate - Gnome Inquisitor Badger Woods. A wise reliable companion.
Enemy - Nameless Half Orc Half Dragon. Mal was never able to discover his name but his dark mistress sent him on a collision course with Mal which has yet to ome to pass.

An objective -
Generally Mal looks to protect all goodly races and the forest. He would like to track down the enemies that gave he and his former companions so much trouble. Without his companions around him now is looking to increase his own prowess with the bow so that when the time comes and finally confronts his mortal enemy his arrows will strike without mercy.

Tomorrow I will build out his stats. He will be Ranger 3/Sorcerer 3.

Greetings agian!
Was thinking of submitting a fetchling paladin. The basic concept will be that when the other knights liberated fair maidens from towers and killed dragons, he was always tasked clear out the local graveyard/tomb/monster-spider nest. As a consequence, he has alot of combat experiance, but no glory. Will flesh out the concept a little tomorrow, I have ideas including tyrants and fire so I think it will work out fine ...

Now for some questions, is the Fetchling available as a PC? Beastery II I think... And would it be ok to swap out the horse companion the paladin gets for some other fuzzy animal ?

DM Keddah:
I've finished up Israfel.

She's following an angel theme. I've defined her eidolon as having essentially the same form and appearance as Israfel, all gear is worn / carried as normal on any other character. The primary differances in appearance are my armor (appearance only, a representation of my natural armor) and my wings.

In play, she's not so much a caster as a front line fighter, with a concentration on defensive abilities, her chosen weapons, and physical stats.

Israfel:
Well I'm having a good luck at summoners and synthesist. I will have to make some questions before I can say if you are ready to go. Will get back to you. Thanks for the submission!

Gallahad:
Nice background and concept, I like it, I'll get back to you after I have a more thorough look at him!

Joy:
Cool, Tiefling certainly fits a witch, I'll be waiting to read more about her!

Malstei:
Interesting background, is that Plot of the God of Assassins Bhaala not so subtle reference to Baldur's Gate? Will have a look at the stats once you move him to level 6

Saerdna:
A stealthy paladin will that be? The divine bond may be changed depending on what you want to get, or through the Leadership feat if you're looking for something more powerful

DM Keddah:
Honestly I don't know where the DM was going with the plot. I believe there were some Baldur's Gate elements in his PBP but I am not 100% sure how closely he was planning on following the course of that particular game.

Apologies for the back to back posting but I got a chance to finish Mal's stats for you to review DM Keddah.

I was thinking of playing a Thayan Gladiator who either won his freedom or somehow got free. He would be a Barbarian with either 1 level in the PrC or about to enter it.

If that doesn't work, I have a few other concepts kicking around. FR is one of my favorite settings and I have most of their 3.x books on my shelf, so I have an amazing grasp of the setting, gods, organizations, etc.

The character sheet for Iban of the Cold Rocks, the dwarven master of throws, is here:

http://www.dndsheets.net/view.php?id=25876

I used Hero Lab to create him and then substituted the feats from the archetypes; hopefully I didn't screw the numbers up.

I took average HP per level, increased Str at level 4 and gained +2 HP due to Fighter favored class levels.

Detailed background to follow.

GM Keddah:
Actually id rather just be an emmisary only point of taking the beastrider is to some day be able to ride a gryphon or some equivalent (dream) but thinking it over this horse is probably only thing left from his tribe so think ill just stick with emmisary and the horse lol makes it easier on you as well :)
