The Devourers

Game Master TerraNova

Originally sent as support to three planetary systems, a kill team of the deathwatch is forced to deal with the beginning of a tyranid advance. Can the battle-brothers stop the great devourer before their full might comes to bear?

"It's time to move on. Elyas take point with Vrusk. Adalricus you're responsible for rearguard." Afterwards, Magnus will draw his bolt pistol and fire a single round, point blank at the traitor. This is too good a death for this traitor.

Half-Elf Sor 1 (Storm)

Aetheros falls into formation as the group advances deeper into the ship.

Human, Augmented

No sign at all of Brother Venulf. Wait. Who's Brother Venulf?

I'll put the auspex-scanner back in its place, and draw my chainsword.

Male Human

Camael will take a postion about 2 paces behind the latest lead members of the team

I also still have the might of heros active for +10 str

Nikeides takes position near Elyas.

Human, Augmented

I take position besides Brother Elyas, giving him a quick Dark Angel salute, and await the order to move forward.

Adalricus takes up rearguard, ready to blast anything that approaches from that angle.

"Ready to proceed." He follows the voxed statement with the "ready" hand gesture.

The kill-team advanded through the corridor rapidly, only taking the absolute minimum in precautions required by the Codex. This behavior had an unexpected reward when they secured a bulkhead, and crossed it. Adalricus has just barely crossed that threshold, when it shut violently, and the characteristic clicking sound of mag-locks falling into place drove home the point that a way back was locked off.

The new corridors were not much different from those that came before, but somewhat larger. They stretched as far as the sensors could carry - probably one of the main throughfares of the frigate. Smaller satellite paths intersected it in regular intervals.

Challenging Tech Use (Auspex Required):

Spoiler:
The third intersecting passage shows significantly elevated energy emissions. Possibly from the Tau battlesuit technology. Possibly an ambush, or defenders scrambling to dig in

Human, Augmented

I clip my chain sword back into place on my armor, and pull forth the auspex-scanner.

Tech-use (INT + 5): 1d100 ⇒ 53

Human, Augmented

Barely sufficient for a Challenging (+0) Test.

Human, Augmented

Possible Enemy contacts!

I point down the 3rd corridor, drawing my chain-sword, and placing the scanner back in its place.

Male Human

"We are fighting the foul Xeno Tau, charge and negate their ranged weapons." Camael begins moving forward at max speed towards the IDed corridor staying about 6in from the wall.

Initiative 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Human, Augmented

initiative: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

How wide is the corridor?

Human, Augmented

Aren't the Tau known for drawing their enemies into lethal ambushes?

For the Emperor! For the Lion!

If there's any cover to be used, make a Tactical Advance. Otherwise Charge.

Male Human

Perhaps but somehow I guess their super pro fire warriors are not on their ship in orbit when there is a land war

Space Marine Ultramarine Tactical Marine 1

"Move and cover that corridor but keep an eye on the others. Don't rush in, it may be an ambush."
Magnus will then move quickly to a position that gives him a good view down the corridor without exposing himself too much.
"We'll draw them in and cut them down. Vrusk, is there a corridor we can use to get around and flank them, or they us?"
Bolter drawn, standard round chambered, activating over watch if possible

Nikeides takes quickly position, taking cover while keeping an eye on the corridor.
I think those are Air castes on the space ships. Can't rememeber anything about Tau "marines"

Magnus: Difficult Command Test:1d100 + 10 ⇒ (70) + 10 = 80

While Magnus still approaches the newly-discovered position with caution, and most of the Kill-Team try to find cover, Brother Camael charges forward, either already caught in the momentum of battle, or receiving the vox transmission too late.

Camael found a side corridor, just shy of 6 feet wide. Like most of the ship, its walls are relatively bare except for a finger-deep engraving. Just at the end of that corridor, 10 meters from the intersection, and past two sliding doors, two tau soldiers in battlesuits awaited him. These suits stood about as tall as a space marine in power armor, but unlike the glorious imperial armors, they were relatively delicate things

Init Tau 11d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Init Tau 21d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Init Order: Tau2, Camael, Tau1. Other members enter the fight on round 2

Tau 1: Aim and fire
Tau 1: Full-auto 1d100 ⇒ 44, 2 hits
Camael dodges: 1d100 ⇒ 96
Damage: 2d10 + 4 ⇒ (9, 3) + 4 = 16 2d10 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11 - a dud and 2 wounds

Two of the plasma bolts pierce the santified armor just below the aquilla, stinging but ultimately not hurting camael much. The blood angel closed in on the aliens, firing his bolter.

1d100 ⇒ 92

Yet while the shells of his weapon only exploded in the wall, showering the battlesuits with dust, he still was exposed to the plasma fire of the two xenos

Tau 1: Aim and fire
Tau 2: Full-auto 1d100 ⇒ 89, no hits

With Camael committed as he was already, there was little clevery trickery still left as an option

If you haven't already, please roll initiative. You know the Taus scores. ;)

1d10 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 initiative

Mentally castigating himself for not awaiting orders, Brother Vrusk hopes Brother Elyas better honors our chapter by staying in position. However, as the enemy is in sight, and it would be suicidal to check his forward rush now, he raises his roaring chain-sword overhead, preparing to execute the strike known in the drill manuals as "Emperor's Wrath from on High."

Nikeides curses silently but keeps his position for now.

Space Marine Ultramarine Tactical Marine 1

To clarify, are Camael and the battle suits out of sight?

Camael has headed around a corner, so to speak. Power armor tactical display and vox do paint a rather clear picture on what his status is, though

Dark Angels Assault Marine

Warnings began to flair on Elyas' tactical display. He felt the familiar fury begin to build in him as he recognized the alien signatures in the signals relayed to him by his armour. It shifted ever so slightly, highlighting the few honours left after the secondment to the Deathwatch.

He steps up to the corner, raises his bolt pistol and fires. The shot sails past one of the alien powerarmours. "Permission to engage in close combat, Brother Magnus?" he requests over the radio.

Bolt pistol, 2nd shot: 1d100 ⇒ 42

Miso stupid, I forgot to factor in Pen for the first barrage. Well, count yourself lucky, Camael.
Fire warriors: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Kroot Hunters: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

As Camael began to sprint down the last paces towards the battlesuits, they showed no sign of letting up their barrage of plasma. Yet as Camael passed to double doors to his sides, they suddenly sprang open - revealing more enemies that had lain in wait, in keeping with the Tau doctrine of the Patient Hunter. There was a pair of lightly-armored fire Warriors in each of them, and a hawkish Kroot, which swiftly joined the battle.

Battlesuit 2: Full Auto
1d100 ⇒ 87 - No hits
Kroot 2: Charge at Camael
1d100 ⇒ 70: Miss
Vrusk: Move, then attack Kroot 2
1d100 ⇒ 83: Miss
Fire Warrior 1: Full Auto Pulse Rifle at Camael
1d100 ⇒ 13 - 4 Hits on Body
Camael: Dodge
1d100 ⇒ 20 - Attack Neutralized
Fire Warrior 4: Full Auto Pulse rifle on Camael
1d100 ⇒ 10 - 4 Hits on Head, Head, Arm, Body
2d10 + 2 ⇒ (8, 3) + 2 = 13 - 14 - 8 = 6 on Head - 14 Wounds left
2d10 + 2 ⇒ (8, 7) + 2 = 17 - 17 - 8 = 9 on Head - 5 Wounds left
2d10 + 2 ⇒ (8, 8) + 2 = 18 - 18 - 8 =10 on Arm - Critical +5
2d10 + 2 ⇒ (6, 8) + 2 = 16 - 16 -10 = 6 on Body - Critical +11
Camael, you may want to consider burning a Fate Point here.
50% chance of ammo explosion - >50: Boom
1d100 ⇒ 49 No explosion

Camael's armor ended punctured in many places by the weapon pulses, and one of the hits hit his armors internal power array - overloading it, letting the battle-brother collapse in a heap.

Magnus's blast erupted in the only clean group of targets left - the Tau
benefitted from still being covered by the massive bulkhead, so the ammunition of of metalstorm clip could only reach small areas. Only one splinter penetrated the Taus armor.

With Camael collapsed on the floor, the tau warriors immediately switched to the next target not already tied in melee - the rapidly-closing Elyas.

While the Tau warriors continued to rain a storm of energy pulses down on the Emperor's finest, the battlesuits seemed to go through some kind of reconfiguration. The small-caliber carbine retracted, and another contraption took its place.

The emperor's retribution followed swiftly, as Elyas' chainsword connected with the body of the Kroot. The alien grunted in pain as its primitive body-armor was torn asunder by the chain, and its flesh exposed. Another strike like this, and it would be history.

1d100 ⇒ 9 Kroot Attack Elyas
1d10 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 19 - 1 Damage - 12 Wounds left

Its counterswing was wickedly targeted, but the primitive weapon failed to penetrate the protective aegis of Elyas' power armor.

Just as the battle was beginning to look grim for the defenders of Mankind, Adalricus scored a telling hit. His boltgun barked in rightous fury, and the first of the Tau Battlesuits collapsed, its wearer torn apart inside his own armor.

The Kroot originally engaged to Elyas tried to strike the marine again,
but Elyas skillfully evaded the blow. Moments later, the xeno was brought down by Brother Vrusk.

The Tau soldiers retreated back into the rooms they had emerged from, to remove themselves from the chance of being engaged in melee

BS halved from critical(40): 1d100 ⇒ 42

1d100 ⇒ 63
1d100 ⇒ 71

The two remaining Fire Caste continued to discharge their pulse weapons at high rates of fire, but their wavering conviction and lackluster lust for battle resulted in a near-miss at the closest.

Camaels unleashed psychic power tore down the battlesuit, and tossed the two Tau warriors violently against the walls, as the Blood Angel ancestors tore through mind and body of the Xenos alike.

1d100 ⇒ 5 - Feint at Elais
1d100 ⇒ 40 - Elias Feint Defense
1d100 ⇒ 89 - Kroot Melee attack

The Kroot facing Elias did not give up so easily. He seemingly deliberately left open an avenue of attack, and when the finely-honed instincts of the dark angel lured him into exploiting it, attempted an underhanded maneuver that would have pierced Elyas' armor from below. Yet as skillfully as the xeno executed its ruse, as pathetic was the actual attack. Elyas' sleeve deflected the blow almost without trying.

1d100 ⇒ 49 Elyas attack

Elyas could not quite return the favor, his blow falling short of connecting by inches.

1d100 ⇒ 33 Attack Adalricus
1d100 ⇒ 83 Kroot dodge
1d10 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
1d10 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

Adalricus targetted the kroot with another volley of bolts, and finally felled the xenos.

The two remaining Fire Warriors were retreating at full speed now, abandoning the lost ambush. At the same time, gunfire could be heard behind the bulkhead this ambush had defended. Foregoing the chase might allow the Fire Warriors a chance to set up a second ambush - but whatever battle was joined behind the door would play itself out without Astartes intervention.
