HISTORY:

Magnus has served the Ultramarines for almost one hundred years. Though he may appear much older than other veterans from his recruitment.
After serving his time in scout, devastator and assault squads Magnus was appointed to seventh company where he slowly worked his way up to the rank of third in the companies ninth tactical squad.
Several years after his promotion he found him and his squad on the industrial world of Thrax, defending street by street against a massive demonic incursion. It was during this mission that his sergeant was killed by a bloodthirster and the mantle of squad leader fell on him. Acting quickly he rallied the remainder of his squad and tore the bloodthirster apart before pulling back to an abandoned Arbites precinct. His squad held that precinct against wave after wave of cultists, daemons and traitorous guardsmen long after their ammunition was spent until reinforcements arrived. In the end only three marines survived including himself although he did safeguard the fallen members bodies so that their gene-seed could be recovered. His team was leaving the atmosphere when The Chapter-Master declared Exterminatus and he found himself on the Chapter-Master's battle barge. Apparently the news of his squads exploits had reached even the upper echelons of his chapter and he was called to present himself.
The masters of the chapter drilled him for several hours, varying between his knowledge of the Codex to tactics and his actions on Thrax. During this entire ordeal he was burdened with the belief that he had failed his chapter and dishonoured his squad but at the end when they were satisfied he left their presence as a sergeant and was deployed to fourth company to command their sixth tactical squadron in defence of the Ultima sector where he has served since.
Magnus was seconded to the Deathwatch by the Ultramarines for several reasons. Firstly, duty and responsibility to represent the chapter, second to learn from the other chapters present and return to the chapter ready to shoulder the responsibilities that come from higher commands. Third, which he doesnt know, during one of his missions deployed to defend the Ultima sector he attracted the notice of a Watch captain who asked for him specifically
