Something is rotten is Rhoona…

A bizarre series of proclamations coming out of the Ducal palace casts a pall over the city – taxes must be paid in beer, horses ridden by civilians must be ridden backwards. Soon the entire town is in an uproar.

Whereas: Stephen, Duke of Rhoona has been acting in a dangerously unstable manner;
And Whereas: The Duchy of Rhoona is ready to fall before the Forces of Evil;
It is hereby decreed that a valiant and courageous party of adventurers must learn the secret of the Duke’s insanity and free the city from the yoke of chaos.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------

The game would be set in Mystara, the original D&D setting, but using 5th Ed rules.

Best case I'd be looking for 5-6 players - I know all too well that players drop out and so this keeps the game flowing. The game can be tough in parts and I am one for having a bit of a challenge as well so some combats and situations will be tough.

I've run many PFS games as PbP and have a long running Carrion Crown PbP campaign, so I've done this sort of thing before.

I've tried running a TSR module: Cult of the Reptile Cult as 5th Ed about a year back but it imploded when the characters ran many different directions and turned a little Murder Hobo-ey so I am having another crack at 5th Ed and TSR modules now. The game does tend to be a bit of a railroad but I can allow some sand box approaches.

I expect the standard post a day, with considerations for work and real life though ideally I'd like two a day. I am on Australian Eastern time but tend to work into the Morning US hours or am on at the end of the US working day.

I'd use theater of the mind for some combats and roll20 for others. I have a Obsidian portal site for notes, journal etc.

Character Creation

Applicants should use the standard array (15,14,13,12,10 and 8) with level 3 characters (ie experienced adventurers). Variant humans are fine as are Aasimar from the DMG and Goliath from the Elemental Evil supplement, though they should be re-skinned as part ogres (or variant half orcs if you wish) - They'd fit better.

I'd allow one skill modification of Backgrounds and allow you to pick your own traits, bonds, flaws etc.

I will be adding an additional bond to all characters, namely 'Band of Brothers' - You know each other, have adventured together before and trust each other. Post recruitment I'd like you all to write a sentence or two into your backgrounds about why you feel connected to, happy to adventure with etc each of the other selected characters.

Hitpoints would be max for level 1 and the PHB standard hitpoints after that. We can see about rolling once you level. I expect the game to take you to level 5 or 6.

If the game runs well AND the players are eager to continue I can run a modified Castle Amber (X2) or another classic D&D adventure.

Standard PHB starting equipment set up + 50 gold OR 4d6 + 3 X 10gp - adventurers tend to burn through cash on good times and good company between adventures. You can spend your money on whatever you wish from the PHB. I'd recommend saving a few gold for a meal, room etc.

I will provide each character a masterwork item or weapon later, something a bit above the norm: A custom and treasured item you paid a lot for earlier. You also have two potions of Cure Wounds each.

The original module specifies 5th to 7th level BECMI characters. A level three 5th ed is generally tougher and more capable than a level old school 5th-6th level character, particularly rogues and wizards.

I am hoping for the four traditional major roles: Fighter (or Paladin, Barbarian etc), Cleric, Wizard (Sorcerer in a pinch) and Rogue (though some backgrounds can create a rogue like character) to be filled first then either add additional characters like warlocks, bards and monks to augment the party. I am fine with having a bit more melee firepower - such is old school D&D.

Here is the Obsidian Portal Site for the campaign.

The Wiki has some stuff on Mystara and the lands around Rhoona, the site of the adventure.

I've some OPTIONAL house rules - additional backgrounds (taken from EnWorld I believe), changes to a few old feats and a few new feats, armour rules that fit better with 3rd Ed, updates to weapons (Darts, for example, represent throwing knives or shuriken etc) and so on.

These can be taken or left as we decide as a group.

Liberty's Edge

I located a very interesting website that I will link here for you. I was looking into playing a wizard from Galantri and stumbled onto this site. Interested if I could use some of their ideas (especially the background 'Student of the Great School'.

Pandius

Student of the Great School:

BACKGROUND: STUDENT OF THE GREAT SCHOOL

Since a very young age, you have been a student at the greatest school of magic in the known multiverse. Built over the source of all weave or radience in existence, the Great School literally crackles with magical energy. Many are sent but few are accepted, and among these there are always a number who fall prey to wild magical surges, conjurations gone wrong or professors in a bad mood. You are one of the survivors, the elite or arcana, enjoying many privilages in Glantrian society and law. You are not a graduate but a senior apprentice on life experience, away from the school but still a part of the hallowed ivy corridoors of power.
Skill Proficiencies : Arcana, History
Cantrips : You know one extra cantrip.
Equipment : A set of student robes, a set of normal clothes, a certificate of enrollment, a bottle of black ink, a quill and 15 gd.

FEATURE : A STUDENT FOR LIFE
As a student, whenever you are in Glantri City, you can stay for free in the School, consult your personal tutor (a powerful wizard) for help and advice and use their facilities for magical research (you have advantage on any rolls you have to make).
Each time you advance a level, you may return to the school to renew you subscription. The fee is 200 gold ducats/level and in return you may learn 1 extra spell of your choice (of a level you can cast). In addition, at the appropriate levels, you can learn the special feats that are only open to members of the school (students and staff).
If you don't (or can't) renew your subscription, you are temporarily blacklisted and cannot gain any benefits until you pay all the fees owed.

SUGGESTED CHARACTERISTICS
Foreigners believe that Glantrian wizards are arrogant, scheming, eccentric megolomaniacs. Though this isn't universally true, there is more than a grain of truth in the stereotype.

d8 Personality Trait

1 I am unworldly and don't know how the mundane world operates
2 I have a strange theory (eg. Halflings are short dwarves) that I often argue
3 I am the elite and I behave and dress accordingly
4 I'm slow to trust anyone and see devious motives behind everything
5 I have no time for immortals or the mortal fools caught in their web of lies
6 I will change the world – either you aid me or you oppose me
7 I spout interminable facts about anything I encounter to those near me
8 I'm always scribbling notes on everything - my hands and clothes are ink-spattered

d6 Ideal

1 Tradition. I will play my part in serving the rich traditions of the School (lawful)
2 Noble Obligation. It is my duty to protect and care for those beneath me (good)
3 People. I look out for those I care about, not for vague ideals (neutral)
4 Power. I'll do absolutely anything to get to the top (evil)
5 No limits. Don't let anything stop you changing the world (chaotic)
6 Aspiration. Wizards of the future will use my spells (any)

d6 Bond

1 As a junior, I made an enemy of a powerful wizard who I try to avoid
2 I love my school and will defend it from criticism and attack
3 My old tutor may have deteriorated but I still honour him or her
4 The library is a sanctuary of learning in a world of ignorance. I bring it books
5 I accidently released something from captivity and it lurks in a dark place
6 A powerful wizard killed one of my friends. One day, I will have revenge

d6 Flaw

1 I hear imagined insults & anger swiftly
2 The things I've seen sometimes make it difficult for me to sleep
3 I love to be enchanted
4 I enjoy provoking religious beings
5 My curiosity may end up killing me
6 I'd rather lose a friend than an argument

I will modify Zook for this.

Spent a lot of time on the Pandius site of late with mixed results :)

And yet, student of a great school?

I've gotten something similar but your one is fine as well - Feel free to us it. Galantri is some distance away so think on a sentence or two as to your adventuring background.

No on the extra cantrip :)

Can you link me to the overall page they have for 5th ed races and backgrounds? I can only find bits and pieces of it and would love the page that had all the links on it.

History:
Magnus Corvus was born the youngest son of the Magistrate (Shire Reeve) of Northshire in the Kingdom of Darokin. Growing up in their hall in the village of Mar, the youngest son of House Rook was noted for his quick mind and fleet feet. Tutored by the ancient Wizard of the Rook, young Magnus devoured his studies like a starving man would a banquet. It was of no surprise to any that the old wizard wished to sponsor his young protégé to the School of Wizardry in Glantri City, far to the north. While not a wealthy House, the magistrate saw much potential in sending his young son away to school, and with the lucky find of a valuable copper mine, was able to do so.
For seven years Magnus toiled at the School, learning his trade, and making many valuable connections for his family. Now just past his apprenticeship and starting work on his finals, Magnus has taken a Sabbatical to help his family. A friend of his father has need of assistance in the far-off Kingdom of Vestland. First he stopped off home, back to Rookshall in Mar to visit his family. From there he accompanied some family cargo to the port of Athenos. From here it was a month journey by cog east past several ports until the ship finally made anchor at Norrvik.
Magnus arranged for the sale of the ship’s goods, and with the profit was able to ‘deal’ with his father’s friend’s problem with a small amount left for himself. Unfortunately he had heard of further troubles in the town of Roona, further inland. Seeing this as a possible chance to further his education, and perhaps come back with some rare bit of lore from the Northern Kingdoms, Magnus travelled to the town in search of knowledge and adventure.

Hoping the others who expressed interest will post as well.

I am very new to 5th edition. Right now I am only really comfortable with martial builds.

I will work on something today.... (going out to lunch with the wife first)

Fighter should work fine.

What did you think of my submission?

Looks good.

I'd just calculate your proficiency bonuses with their totals if you could and also prepare a status bar for your character so when you post in game I can see your AC/HP/Perception/Saves etc

I could be wrong but I think your character has too few level 1 spells in his spell book and too many level 2 spells.

You only get two spells each time you level up and I don't think you can pick level 2 spells when you are still unable to cast them.

I did like your use of magical initiate! I have thought of doing this myself as well.

I love 5E. I'll make a character....

I'm thinking a Barbarian...Berserker!

Status bar is already done.

You get an Auto Pass. I am really enjoying the 5th Ed game you are running for me at the moment. Its been fantastic!

So... am I in?

Looks good for now Astrid - unless I get a lot of barbarians beating down my door it looks like Doom Kitten is a go!

I think the roles we are missing now is Cleric and rogue*. I think someone was going to make a fighter - thats not a bad idea. This adventure would support multiple melee combatants.

As for having two barbarians? It fits the region perfectly to have them.

*A ranger or Dex type with the Criminal background (ie Thieves tools proficiency) could stand in for a rogue if wanted and a variant human with the Healing Proficiency would be a good stand in for a cleric if no one wanted to play one of those though at level 3 clerics can be pretty badass

I'm vaguely thinking of submitting (having been shown this by Astrid/Doomkitten), and thinking of a rogue, buuuu~uut I'm trying to own up to a flaw - I'm working on it, but I wanted to be clear before submitting.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Plus, we can play up the contrast between the calm, spiritual barbarian who struggles to control her rage, and... whatever Niles cooks up :P

A rogue would be fine. There is a lot you can do with them.

I've had a lot of fun playing rogues. I've one who is a military scout (Soldier) and another that is a Wilderness Warrior ranger type (Outlander) and both play out as a lot of fun.

Hoping that you will have some luck with this game Tacticslion. What have been some of the issues that had you dropping out before?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I like Astrid, I keep thinking of How to Train your Dragon. Love those movies.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Astrid - Barbarian
Niles - Barbarian (TBA)
Tacticslion - Vaguely thinking of a rogue (TBA)
Daniel Stewart - Wizard
Edward Sobel - Martial type (TBA)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'll roll a Goliath Barbarian(Berserker) Outlander...reflavored to a Half Ogre barbarian. I'm thinking the Bond "I am the last of my tribe, and it is up to me to ensure their names enter legend"

He adventures to make a name for himself and for his clan!

The good news is I'm super exited to play that type of character. The bad news is that I don't currently have a profile that would support that type of character so I'll have to make a new profile.

I'm awash with too many different ideas at present.

Would a Charlatan (insinuation into lives, or possessing different identities), Entertainer (Dancer, Orator, and Tumbler), Folk Hero (I like all of them), Noble (possibly a knight, if it would interfere with the plot via Duke's authority in Rhoona), or Sage (Librarian) be better?

I can basically get all the effects I want and need (outside of Jack of All Trades* ;P) with those.

I know you're letting us do our own character, but I enjoy working to the setting and system.

I'm thinking half-elf.

I'm really, really stuck, though: arcane trickster, assassin, or thief? I want to be all of them, but only one at a time... sigh. :/

The fact that all would work well with most any of the backgrounds to create interesting characters is compelling, too.

(Though I'm especially fond of the Folk Hero or Noble or Sage as an Assassin, the Charlatan or Entertainer or Sage as a Thief, and the Charlatan or Noble or Entertainer as an Arcane Trickster.)

Any guidance, however light, would be appreciated.

* But, really, I always want Jack of All Trades/Bardic Lore or their equivalent no matter what or who I play. XD

Magnus is the Smart Guy.
Niles is the Big Guy.
I'm the Chick.

That leaves either the Leader or the Lancer for you, TL.

Going for Arcane Trickster is always useful. It grants more versatility, and you'll also be a backup if Magnus runs out of spells.

One of the things you can do is tweak the backgrounds some to make it better fit your concept.

If you want to go noble, it would be something like a 2nd or 3rd son (or daughter) of a baron. It will open some doors for you but I don't think it would yield a lot of benefits in this particular storyline/module. But if its just for pure RP, if thats the way you want to go then it would still be viable. A noble thief is not an uncommon trope :)

The Obsidian portal site also has some alternate backgrounds

Archeologist - Think Indiana Jones or Beloch :)
Inquisitor - We'd need to work on some background if you wanted to be a member of a faith but even if you didnt you could even be an Executioner (Rogues can use longswords I believe, makes a fine executioner blade).
Prostitute - Ever want to play an ex-Man Whore? "Don't make me he-b*@@$ pimp slap you"
Doctor - Especially with the healer feat? Would make a fine assassin type - you know just where and how to strike.
Ex Town Guard (Not Rhoona please) - Ever want to be the jaded ex cop or maybe even Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley (he was a good thief).

And some others here as alternates.
https://bretts-d-d-next.obsidianportal.com/wikis/backgrounds

If you have other backgrounds you want to try then I am happy to work with you.

I want to make you excited to play your character. Level 3 play should make it a well rounded character.

I am looking to play a young warrior type. back story is his whole family was killed by a dragon. He makes a living on the city streets now.

He is a skilled swordsman but is a little naive in the ways of the world.

here is a visual I have in mind

was going with the sole survivor background from the wiki

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sure - The kid kicked around by life and still learning the ropes. I'd ask that you be at least 16-17 years old though. Given that you are 3rd level that would still make you VERY impressive for a relative 'kid'.

One thing I just want to re-emphasise is that you guys all will know each other and would have adventured with each other before, trusting each other. What ever you were before? You are adventurers now (though thats not to say you don't draw on your old life).

So while I want you guys to feel free to make characters that excite you just try to angle in "how would I know the others - did they rescue me etc"

One of the things Edward may want to look at is the 'Sole Survivor' background I have on my site

https://bretts-d-d-next.obsidianportal.com/wikis/backgrounds

[edit]: You already found it :)

Busy weekend,i'll get something up this evening

We could use a cleric if you are up for it.

Not expecting to ever fully use them, but I've "settled" on three - half-elven brothers. The specifics of their sordid history are not fully made, yet, but the point is that there is a noble family, some nasty business with evil entanglements, and a deep-seated estrangement from family ties leading the three in different directions.

(Though they all have the same stats, and two of the three are chaotic good - the last being neutral good -, at present, the skillset differ, and each has their own focus, background, and style of doing things.)

The one to "start" with is the arcane trickster who is a charlatan.

Even if the others never get brought in, it's nice having made them, as characters. I'm finalizing the skillset and items at present. Spells will take a tad longer.

EDIT: to be clear, I'm going to be reeeeaaaaaaaally busy today, starting now-ish. I might be able to get the information back to you, later today, but I don't know for sure.

EDIT 2: sigh, I put quotation marks around the wrong word. I duh smaaaaart wun.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Glad to see you are getting into it :)

Once we have the final characters I'll let you guys tweak your backgrounds to fit the others, then tweak your gold/equipment some and throw some equipment tweaks (as desired to fit) your way.

One thing I will give each of you is a masterwork item.

https://bretts-d-d-next.obsidianportal.com/wikis/masterwork-items

You can have a treasured battle axe or longsword for instance - gives +1 damage.

You may as well even go and give it a name :)

Anyone ever read Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser books? They didn't have magic weapons but they loved the weapons they had... even named them. The Mousers rapier and dagger was 'Cats Claw' and 'Scalpel'.

Wizards or clerics may be interested in the focus item. Couldn't hurt to give it a name or back story either.

In the days long gone, many moons ago Aukan's tribe, the Anakalathai were savaged by the deadly Wendigo. Aukan is all that is left.

I don't have a background firmed up but the idea is that Aukan is 30-40 years old and has been adventuring for a while. The "Wendigo" (or whatever bad guy the GM wants) destroyed his clan when he was but a youngling, maybe 15-18 and Aukan survived somehow. Now he adventures to spread the name of Clan Anakalathai and for his own personal glory.

Sounds great! Love it. Your race gives you athletics as a skill so you get another skill. Pick any one.

I am still at a loss for a name... weird huh?

question on masterwork weapon... I cannot find any info on masterwork.

EDIT: also I found the weapon Bolas, would they have a tripping property?

Edit 2: have we gamed on these boards together before?

Not sure on bolas - let's leave it for now. I am thinking of using the net rules but with a range of 10/30...

Masterwork items are found on the obsidian portal site house rules page.

ok cool, I wasn't sure if that was in addition to something else.

found this for bolas

The monk rules state the nunchucks are clubs etc - it's a good idea. Let's just use the net and give it a range of 20/60. You can start with one bola. Would prefer it it stayed at one. Don't want the game over shadowed by multiple bola's

Astrid sighed as the front gates of the camp slammed shut behind her. The wolf have mercy on his soul, she thought grimly as she set glumly out into the wilderness.

Ever since her victory leading the people against the enemy tribe, Jarl Lokim had been eyeing Astrid strangely. One day, she found a dead body, head smashed in, in her hut. Quick to accuse Astrid, Jarl Lokim sentenced her exile. The people knew she was innocent, but who were they to oppose the Jarl?

As she clambered through the wilds of the forest, Astrid continued to muse to herself. Perhaps the Jarl thought that because she had the support of the people, Astrid would launch a rebellion against him? How could he, she was just a simple smith!

But the fire of the spirits burned in her soul, and they wouldn't let her continue her simple life forging weapons and armor for the warrior. No, Astrid Truestone had a grand destiny...

Thats cool, only got one anyway.

of course if its too much I can just eliminate it too, I'm not committed to bolas.

is there a format to use for posting the character sheet?
