Ruby shrugs. "All the excitement, I think ... about Kerst Grath's suicide, I mean. She couldn't keep the kids from whispering about it. I think she was distracted herself. She kept looking out the windows and forgetting what she had been saying. So she just sent us home."

The priestess takes the book cover and turns it over in her hands. "The true treasure was the scripture inside," she tells him with a wry smile. "Keep it with my blessings."

She turns her attention to the vials, flasks, and scrolls. "These aren't magical," she informs the two, referring to the two glass vials. She uncorks one, sniffs it, and cautiously tastes it. "I believe ... yes, they're holy water."

She is able to identify the potions and scrolls.

See updated loot list in Campaign Info.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor can't help but let out a slight squeak of glee as the book cover is rendered unto them for disposition, which likely draws a glance from Marikel to match the feline disdain with which Carbonel marks the gnome...

Appraise:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Vhailor:
You gauge that the gold and jewels employed in the construction of the book cover are worth 500 gold pieces. There remains only the question of who, in Trunau, has that kind of money lying around to spend on such valuables, if you're looking to sell it.

Alicia or a prominent local NPC such as Halgra Blackblade can suggest someone who would be willing to buy the book cover. Trunau doesn't strike me as the kind of place where you can liquidate objets d'art at the general store, particularly when it's run by the likes of Jess Meeson.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

As Vhailor considers the book cover, his eyes slowly begin to bulge near halfway out of their sockets before he coughs and splutters.

Balladeer:
How intrinsic is the value to the book form? - as in would the value reduce significantly if it were rendered to root components (ie melted down)?

Vhailor:
Judging from the weight of the cover and the size of the jewels, you figure it might be worth only about half that if it were sold as raw materials. A great deal of the item's value is its artistry and age.

"Thank you, Ma'am. Iomedae provides."
Marikle nods and looks around.
"I think that's all. If the others have anything else I'll send them on."
Marikle mutters as he moves off, "Where's that girl got to? I mean, Miss Alicia."

Sovereign Court

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor shrugs and stammers "Don't know... she didn't say... went that way though." clearly somewhat distracted as he gingerly and carefully puts away the empty book of wisdom. Recovering as he pushes his lensless glasses back up the bridge of his nose "Should we go looksee for her then?"

Marikel is relieved to note that the direction Vhailor indicates is not out into the streets and possibly further trouble but deeper into the mission. It seems likely that she has gone to the room she shares with Ruby.

"Let's."

Marikel makes his way to Ruby and Alicia's room and knocks politley before opening the door.
"Is everything..." He pauses when he sees Ruby as well.
"Is everything all right?" he addresses both of them, worry furrowing his brow once again.

Female Human

"Miz Kelver let us out of class early," Ruby explains quickly, clearly not wanting the priest to think she is playing truant, "honest. Because of Kerst Grath jumping off the cliff."

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia silently ponders Ruby, until the door opens. She glances at Marikel. "Yeah," she says simply.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel looks about, then steps into the room and pulls the door closed.
"Yes, Ruby, Miss Kelver was very upset about Mister Kerst's death. But we don't think it's true that he jumped. Miss Alicia and I are doing some investigations. We can't tell you much now but please hold onto your hopeknife for us. And be very good for Miss Varvatos and Miss Kelver."
He nods then turns to Alicia.
"Miss Varvatos is available if you'd like any of those things we found looked at. Vhailor and I can meet you outside when you're ready."
Marikel glances to Ruby then says to Alicia, "There's no rush."

Even through the closed door, the sound of someone entering the narthex with a heavy tread and calling out can be heard: "Hello? I'm looking for the Chief Defender! They said she was here!"

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor tilts his head to the side and shrugs slightly. Unless Marikel immediately goes for the door, the gnome sees it opened and trudges out to where the voice could be heard emanating from.

In the entry hall of the mission, Vhailor and anyone who goes with him sees Omast Frum, looking around with a mixture of trepidation and open curiosity that advertises that he has never darkened the door of an Iomedaean church before. At his shoulder is an unfamiliar halfling.

*koff* *koff* That's your cue, AK.

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 2

The Halfling who walked alongside the veteran Dwarf was at his shoulder in not only a metaphorical sense but also a physical one. He was young, but not especially so, more akin to a man in his mid-twenties than a teenager. Far closer to four foot than three, the Halfling was handsome, exceptionally tall and muscular for his race. Garbed as a lightly armoured warrior, the man was smoothly groomed and walked with an air of confident grace, immediately reminding one of a duellist; an impression only reinforced by the basket hilted rapier sheathed upon his belt. To anyone catching his eye, he smiled warmly in greeting but did not speak, clearly measuring his actions against Omast Frum's and deferring to the older Dwarf's lead.

Male Dwarf

The dwarf spies Vhailor in the corridor and addresses him, "Is the Chief Defender here? Got a message she wanted to see me."

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel quickly masks his surprise at the sight of the dwarf and steps past Vhailor.
"Mister Omast. Greetings. Sorry for the wait. Miss Varvatos is through this way."
Marikel sweeps an arm and turns to lead the two back to Tyari. He looks back briefly to the halfing and nods.
"Greetings. I'm Marikel Selentin, cleric of Iomedae (may her blessings be upon you) and I am pleased to make your acquaintance." While his voice is soft and amiable, pleasure does not appear to be reflected in its tone.

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia exchanges glances with Ruby, then pushes herself off of the desk she had been leaning against. She silently follows in Marikel's wake.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor looks initially nonplussed before Marikel comes in both literally and figuratively over his head to answer the question. The gnome instead smiles and when catching the eye of the halfling that accompanies the dwarf... smiles again at the returned smile he receives.

Marikel sweeps an arm and turns to lead the two back to Tyari.

"Nay, nay, not the priestess," Omast demurs hastily. "I'm looking for Halgra, the Chief Defender. They said she had a job for me to do. Oh, and this is a young friend of mine, newly arrived from Janderhoff. Kaleb Merriett," he performs the introduction.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

"Of course."
Marikel turns back to the room he recently left containing Halgra.
"Miss Blackblade was through here."
Marikel makes a slight bow to the halfling.
"Mister Merriett. What brings you to our humble town? How are you finding the local hospitality?"

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 2

Apologies, I did make a post yesterday but the server ate it and I didn't notice.

Kaleb outstretched a hand to the man before him, seeking a handshake. When he spoke, it was a slower and more rumbling tone than most Halfling's spoke with, more akin to a Dwarf.

"Well met, Marikel Selentin. Kaleb Merriett, Trunau-born, Janderhoff-raised, warrior. Am thinking of re-settling, actually. Haven't been back long enough to judge the local hospitality; only seen Auntie Cham and Master Frum. Seems I haven't made my homecoming at a pleasant moment, but I recall such times are rare in these parts."

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia's face darkens momentarily at the mention of Cham. "What in the Starry Expanse would cause you to consider resettling here?" she asks sourly.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Cocking his head slightly and grinning at Alicia's sour words Vhailor counters "I don't know Alicia, it is exciting..." extending a hand towards the fresh arrived halfling "Gelbvhailorin Betorenfalk... though most just settle for Vhailor or hey gnome, but still. I've just recently arrived myself, just long enough for my master to disappear and I inherited his cat..." furrowing his brow and countering himself "Or maybe the cat inherited me... confusing either way."

Male Dwarf

The group is rejoined by Omast and Halgra entering the hall. "A flood troll!" the dwarf is saying with relish. "Haven't seen one in years. And this is the lot that captured it?" His gaze travels over the priest, the teenager, and the gnome a bit skeptically.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor matches the speculation with pointed fingers at the others "They did most of the capturing... I just talked to it."

Alicia Dawnblade wrote:

An amused glance in the young woman's direction accompanied by a wry smile accompanied the Halfling's response.

"Perhaps I have been away for so long that nostalgia and wishful thinking replaced what little good sense Master Frum seems to believe I possess."

Vhailor Falk wrote:

The smooth-talking warrior looked a little lost for words at the Gnome's story but shook his hand in a friendly manner as he stumbled for an appropriate response.

"Um... In Janderhoff pets become vital parts of the family or clan too, especially those that can be trained to be useful on patrol. His cat must be important to you both."

Marikel stands a little straighter and nods.

"Banny refused to believe that her friend would have killed himself. We helped her to prove otherwise. The creature was hiding in the old church outside the town. Once we established that Kerst had been killed outside there aren't really that many places to hide."
He goes to add something else but glances to Halgra and doesn't elaborate.

Male Dwarf

"The Plague House?" Frum replies, aghast. "That's an evil place. Played a grisly part in two of the harshest challenges Trunau's faced in her time. And it's haunted."

Female Human

"Well, I didn't hear tell that they saw any ghosts," Halgra puts in with a tolerant smile at the party. "Are you on your way out to check out that trail? Or is there something else you wanted to tell me?"

"We were just on our way out, Miss Blackblade, when Mr Frum and Mister Merriett arrived to see you. We'll be on our way."

Male Dwarf

"Won't be nothing to interest you at the interrogation, lad," Frum says, turning to Kaleb, "unless you've learned to speak the Giant tongue. I'll meet up with you for dinner later on, hey?"

I know, I know. Integrating new party members is always a little contrived, but ... you want to tag along with your new acquaintances, Kaleb? ;)

The three plus Kaleb depart Sanctuary, heading past That 'n' Such, the Ramblehouse, and Clamor before the road turns back on itself and starts to climb up Bloodmarch Hill through the Inner Quarter. As they pass the Hopespring, the trio can't help but ponder Halgra's speculation that their enemies may be seeking to divert the water source to shorten a potential siege. The Hopespring was the main reason the original defenders of Trunau chose to stand their ground on Bloodmarch Hill; without it, the town would be significantly weakened. After two centuries, what could have prompted the orcs to consider such a devious plan? And is it orcs or some more dangerous enemy?

"Very well, Master Frum." Kaleb concurs. He heads back to the town with the others, walking near them but not especially close.

"Madam, I think in the chaos of that gathering, we were not properly introduced. You are also a local of Trunau ma'am?" Kaleb asks Alicia.

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia smiles sardonically at Kaleb. "Of late," she says. "I'm Alicia, though some people call me Ali."

As Alicia answers Kaleb, the party is passing through the Inner Quarter, past the Killin' Ground.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel looks around as they pass through the streets.

"Where did Banny get to?"
He looks to Alicia. "You're going to need someone to help you check out this cliffside trail. I can't send you alone."
Marikel makes no mention of Vhailor despite the gnome's presence.

The party passes through another gate as they climb to the Upper Quarter and skirt the Commons on their way to the Longhouse and the precipice behind it.

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia shrugs. "The halfling could come with me," she says. "Kaleb?"

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 2

Kaleb bows with a flourish.

"It would be my pleasure. Lead on, madam."

There is a still a guard set on the narrow point of land behind the Longhouse, but he seems to have been forewarned to give the party access. The rope ladder provided by Marian Morris this morning is still dangling over the edge of the cliff, allowing access to the ledge to which the half-orc jumped, and the piton to which Banny secured her belt-rope is still in place.

Going to borrow any further equipment from the Longhouse before going over the edge? And is it only Alicia and Kaleb that are going?

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor follows blithely along behind Marikel, absent noticing the larger being's indifference to his own presence. Carbonel forsakes the gnome's shoulder upon the walk - preferring to be held in the crook of one arm - where his eyelids show signs of slipping into slumber.

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel stays away from the edge.
"Look, I'll just stay here... in case you need anything. But if you do find something... anything... shout and I'll be down in a flash."
He attempts to smile confidently as a bead of sweat trickles down the side of his face.

Female Human Rogue 4

Ali can't help but roll her eyes at Marikel. "We'll be fine, dad," she says, sarcasm dripping from the last word.

Kaleb sees (Alicia already knows) that the rope ladder dangling over the edge of the cliff leads to a small ledge something less than ten feet down, just large enough for one to stand on comfortably or two to squeeze on uncomfortably.

You can both make the necessary Climb and Acrobatics checks by taking 10. If the trail is anything like the ones the party climbed up to the murder cave by, it'll be single-file going. Preference as to who goes first?

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia nimbly hops down to the ledge, then looks up at Kaleb. Wordlessly, she hugs the cliff-face as she slowly makes her way down the trail.

Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Male Halfling Swashbuckler 2

Seeing a chance in Alicia's stance and following her lead, Kaleb mirrors her stealth, his light armour clearly not disrupting his movement in any way.

Take 10 if possible for a 20, GM roll for me if needed.

Everyone but Dorn has seen Mahath and Levvy around town, and Mahath and Levvy recognize Dorn at least as 'that dwarf who's working with the Iomedaeans' party and helped uncover the Twisted Nail's plot.'

Hi Navior and MarkofBane. As you may have guessed Marikel thinks he's the leader of the party and does a lot of ordering people around. Normally I wouldn't pull this kind of behaviour with a random group of people I don't know but Joana has a high standard of role players so I believe you'll be harder to offend.

To yourselves, and as a reminder to the others, if it gets annoying please let me know as soon as possible. Marikel has a high charisma so I want him to come across not just as a leader but as a nice-ish guy in general. So he will listen to suggestions from the party and go with majority decisions.
He's not perfect so he can be rude or dismissive the first time but is quick to apologise, especially if called out on his behaviour.
So if I cross a line, or even get close to that line, please let me know at once.
Especially Ansha, whose character has received the brunt of Marikel's bossiness so far. :-)

No worries, no offence taken! At least, not so far. :-)

Levvy and Marikel might butt heads a bit, as Levvy is a bit of a take charge person as well. All in good fun though!

    Sweet. Should be fun.

And while I'm not making friends-
MarkofBane, should Mahath's hit points be 27 instead of 30? 6+2+1 per level.
Not that Marikel is feeling inferior, of course :-)

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

Don't forget Toughness. Or Favored class bonus. He's got both of those so I'm not sure which one you're missing out on.

    18 for levels; 6 on Con; 3 fc + 3 toughness.

I have no problems with Marikel being a leader figure. And I get that it is a tough balance. In our Kingmaker game, my paladin is the duke of the fledgling nation, and it is hard for me to be the ruler, and yet not roll over the other players on decision making.

And JdL nailed it: 18 from hit dice, 6 from Con, 3 from Favored Class and 3 from Toughness. :)

Nope. Haven't used it all. As a matter of fact, totally forgot about ALL of that until now. :P (You know, you'd think one would actually LOOK more closely at one's character sheet a bit better than what one does). :P

    The Balladeer wrote:
Orc 1 grapples, moving to F6 & moving Dorn to G5

Does that provoke an AoO from Marikel? :-)

    Um... probably?

    Quote:

Once you are grappling an opponent, a successful check allows you to continue grappling the foe, and also allows you to perform one of the following actions (as part of the standard action spent to maintain the grapple).

Move: You can move both yourself and your target up to half your speed. At the end of your movement, you can place your target in any square adjacent to you. If you attempt to place your foe in a hazardous location, such as in a wall of fire or over a pit, the target receives a free attempt to break your grapple with a +4 bonus.

The movement is technically part of the standard-action grapple check, which usually only provokes from the target of the grapple without the Improved Grapple feat (which this orc has).

But even though it's a standard action and not a move, the orc is still moving out of threatened square, which does provoke.

Then you've got the weird loophole where someone being Bullrushed doesn't provoke for moving out of a threatened square because they're not moving voluntarily ... but Grapple doesn't have the same call-out, which seems like Dorn ought to take an AoO from #2 for moving out of a threatened square.

But Bullrush, etc. doesn't cause its target to take an AoO due to enforced movement until you get to the Greater feats, not just the Improved feats. So even though it's RAW, perhaps it's RAI that forced-movement-while-grappled oughtn't to provoke unless the opponent has Greater Grapple.

Anyway, Marikel can go ahead and take an AoO.

Navior, by my count, it's 30 feet of movement to F11, leaving Levvy with another action to take if you want it.

Orc 2 stepped out of the flank after attacking last round, Alicia. Without the +2, your roll was still good enough to hit, however.

Navior, burning gaze is a standard action to cast and then a standard action to attack with. Messageboard consensus is that you can't both cast it and use it on the same turn.

However, the same thread points out that you can cast it on Neddy with the Share Spells ability and then let him attack with it for the duration. That way, not only do you get three attacks with it, you also free up your standard actions over the next two rounds. You want to do that?

Huh. Okay then. I don't really agree with messageboard consensus here, though I see where they're coming from. I guess I'll go the familiar route and cast it on Neddy. :)

That said, I think I like the flavour of using it on Neddy more than on herself. The imagery of a rat with flaming eyes is just too awesome. :)

Yeah, if it were a touch spell, you'd have the blanket rules for touch spells that allow a free attack as part of the casting. It's probably what they intended (and then having to use a standard action to redirect the spell each round of the duration), as otherwise you're wasting a round of the duration not being able to attack.

Still, it's objectively better to cast it on your familiar anyway, as you get to use your own standard actions for the duration.

The varied reactions different classes get to triggers off their turn sound fun at the table but like something that will slow play to a crawl in PbP as players decide whether to use their reaction or which reaction to use. Not to mention that the GM will have to keep up with what might trigger a reaction for whom. It's going to take either a lot more stopping and saying, "Do you want to do X now?" or a lot of retconning when a player says, "Hey, I would have counterspelled that!"

Thus far, the cave giant has tanked on his good save (+10 Fort) and aced his bad saves (+3 Ref and Will). Not a very textbook encounter.

Uh, yeah- we play for the textbook encounters. :-)

Speaking of which- I keep glancing at the bits of the modules we've done because I'm enjoying your games so much and thinking I'd like to run them for my gaming group. But it's really hard because you've changed it up so much, and I immediately stop reading anything I don't recognise because it might be a spoiler.

So I think the missing child leading us into the war zone was your idea, and (of course) you've executed it so seamlessly and so very well. I've given up trying to follow Riddleport because you've sandboxed it so much, and again, so well.

I was playing in PF society and one of the scenarios was in Riddleport and I was telling the GM, can we go here and speak to those people. Do they work for these crimelords? And the GM is like, How do you know all this stuff? Have you done this mod before? And I apologised and explained that I'd been living in Riddleport for the past 5 years :-)

    And one final thing-
I think Marikel has use all 8 of his channels. Is there an easier way to search than search "Channel Energy"? Cause it's a little hard to sift through after the first 1000 posts :-)

Just to double-check: You still have a potion in hand that you retrieved last round, Dorn. You're going to keep holding it?

I count eight (paging back through Marikel's posts looking for Channel Energy rolls).

    That's what I thought. Darn.

"I'm out of healing... all of it."
    Except potions and stuff.

Remember the 5 clw potions identified on your way to the main gates.

    Navior:
The cave giant has more hit dice than can be affected by the daze monster spell. I wasn't really sure how to deal with that in play. Hit dice is an awfully meta criterion to fall under a Knowledge check, and I am loath to force a player to waste a spell slot. In this particular instance, since there's not another enemy that would be a valid target for the spell and there's nothing else that Levvy might use her round on that would be obviously useful, I opted just to have it fail, as, with behind-the-screen knowledge, I don't believe the success of the party will ultimately turn on Levvy having that spell available and uncast. What do you think would be a fair way to adjudicate such an instance in the future? The options I've come up with are:

  • Spell fails, slot is wasted;

  • Caster is somehow "aware" that the target is invalid and is given a redo on the round, preserving spell slot; or

  • Knowledge roll granted to caster to know the target is invalid.

  • Joana:
I like the Knowledge roll. While a Knowledge check wouldn't tell you the exact number of Hit Dice of a creature, I would think that it could tell you whether that creature is too strong for the strength of the spell.

As it happens though, Levvy doesn't have the requisite Knowledge for identifying giants, so I'm perfectly fine with her losing the spell. Even as I had her use it, I wondered whether the giant might be more than 6 HD, but I decided to risk it anyway. As you point out, there wasn't much else for her to do anyway.

I am very amused that the giant continues to pass all its poor Will and Reflex saves, but fail its good Fortitude saves. It helps make up for the fact that pretty much everything (orcs and giant alike) has otherwise passed their saves against almost all of Levvy's hexes and spells. :)

Mahath, I probably didn't make it clear enough, but the cave giant is not carrying a weapon. It has a chain with a dead orc on the end attached to each wrist; looks as if its handlers were killed in battle, and it's now operating on its own initiative.

I.e., he probably is intending to rip you apart with his bare hands ... or with the chains on his wrists, which are locked on.

And while we're making sure everyone's on the same page, it appears as if the chains will probably give the giant reach....

Thanks for the clarifications. And it is totally a coincidence that Mahath's revised action takes him further away from the giant...

I pretty much figured he was gonna have reach being a giant. They almost always do. There are probably a few rare cases out there but for the most part, if it's a giant, you can pretty much write in "reach" for sure.

Yeah, well, I mean, built-in reach ... but also using reach weapons, which will expand his threatened zone past normal giant territory. Like when Marikel was enlarged and wielding a longspear.

P.S. Levvy only performed a standard action on her turn, so if she wants to move back a bit as well, I'll wait and see if she wants to do that before acting for Crusher.

Awesome. Even greater reach. Yeah that's all we need. A giant with, like, 50' reach. Good times. :P
