"He's not my fiancé," Fieri said flatly, glaring at Embre.

Michael shrugs, putting his arms around Kitty.

"It's not mine, technically. I'm a telepath who just happened to pick it up recently in a... less than noble endeavor into standing up for myself. Same with the earth stuff."

"Perhaps we could have this conversation somewhere other than a hallway?" Fuego suggested mildly. "These little discussions of yours have a tendency to take place at loud volumes and I'd rather not discuss family business with the entire school."

I'm selling tickets and taking bets! Popcorn and drinks are free with the purchase of at least one ticket to a fight that is peel the paint from the walls(no, Gustav, that is not permission to repaint the entire school)!

"Just because you didn't start out with the best of motives, doesn't mean that you can't use your abilities for good instead. And it's okay to be proud of your talents and what you can do with them. I know I'm proud of you," she said, giving him a kiss.

"A wonderful idea, Fuego." Ryo says, gesturing and creating a door to his office. "If you all would just step inside my office, we can keep this conversation private."

The door open silently, almost seeming to ask everyone to step through.

Don't let the door hit you on the way in.

"Is that why you're snuggling so close? Pride in your boyfriend? *sigh* I thought it was my smooth talking and good looks..."

"Mmmmm....well, those don't hurt either. Especially the good looks," she said, grinning impishly as she kissed him again.

The group filed into the office, Jiminy keeping to the back, trying not to draw any unnecessary attention to himself just yet.

Apolla turned her perpetually unhappy expression on her daughter. The girl had an unfortunate resemblance to her accursed father. It made it that much harder to keep her temper when dealing with her.
"Now explain yourself. We've come all this way to see you. What do you mean by being so rude?"

Fieri put her hand over her eyes and breathed slowly trying to keep calm.

"Mother, I have told you this before," she said with careful calm. "I have not agreed to this betrothal and do not consider it at all binding since I never gave my consent. And before you start harping on tradition and parents knowing best do you really want me to remind you how well that didn't work for you, my apologies grandfather for bringing this up."

"This!" Apolla shrieked. "This is why I was against sending you to this place! It's given you ideas. This is not How Things Are Done, you stupid girl! This is a brilliant match and you are ruining it!"

"Do not forcibly eject your in-laws, Ryo, no matter how bad they seem." Ryo thinks to himself, keeping the thought safely behind mental walls so Jiminy doesn't get any ideas. Well, from him anyway.

"You don't have to work so hard to get rid of me, you know," Fieri shot back. "I think I've proved how good I am at staying away so you don't have to deal with me. I know you can't stand the sight of me. I'm sorry, I can't help it that I look like my father! It's not like I had any choice about it. I've never even spoken to him before in my life, since the two of you despise each other so much that he hates the sight of me as much as you do. Is that what it is? Some kind of roundabout revenge? You can't do anything to him so you want me to have the same kind of miserable life as some twisted form of payback?!"

"Fieri," Fuego said reproachfully. "I hardly think this is the time -"

"No," Fieri said desperately. "This is exactly the right time. It's the only time..." The fight seemed to go out of her and her shoulders slumped. "It's my last chance to say these things because after today..." her voice broke and she put a hand to her mouth trying to stop the tears that were threatening, afraid that if she started crying she wouldn't be able to stop.

"DO you think that this is going to get you out of trouble, young lady? I have no patience with your dramatics. And you aren't getting out of your duty so easily. You've been indulged in this nonsense long enough and it's time to wake up and accept reality," Apolla said disdainfully, looking at Fieri as if she were something to be scraped from the bottom of her shoe.

"That is enough," Jiminy said, coldly. "You will not speak to her in that manner again. Ever."

Fuego looked sharply at the young man who had spoken so boldly to his daughter and then back at Fieri.

"Fieri, I would like an explanation now if you please. Who is this young man and why is he here? This is family business."

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be making bets on. I was going to bet on who would cry first, but you all beat me to the punch. >:|

Ryo touches Feiri's mind gently, comforting her.

*munches on popcorn* I hope this doesn't get ugly...but I'm down for a family brawl.

They happen a lot when we Sunwakes are involved, strangely enough. I fought Kam's mother, the old people fought Uncle Chan, and now Jiminy may end up fighting(verbally hopefully) the Helios family.

Krays, you realize that sorta makes you the black sheep of the family, right? No one fought over you. :p

Well, it helps that nobody including me knew I was a dragon. I'm sure that would have changed things a bit.

As soon as I can get out of this blasted bed I'll fight you, if it'll make you feel better about the whole thing.

Heh...not looking to start a family brawl, brother-in-law. But if you need to raise your spirits beating on a poor defenseless kobold...

I'd go after Vakkler. He's about as 'defenseless' as you can get in Avalon.

"Grandfather....this is James Sunwake. And he is family. He and I...are bonded-"

"What?!" Fuego roared. "Do you know what you're saying child?"

Embre looked repulsed. "Well, I can see that I had a lucky escape. You aren't worthy to be called a firebird. I wonder how many of these outlanders you had to spread your legs for before you found one willing to take you," he sneered.

Jiminy's eyes narrowed. He considered using words for about a tenth of a second before he hauled off and punched Embre in the face.

"You will not speak like that about my mate," he said with deadly calm.

"Fieri, you know what this means," Fuego continued, ignoring both Embre's outburst and its aftermath.

Round one. FIGHT!!

"I know," she said miserably. "For bonding with an outlander my name will be stricken from the records as if I never existed. You won't be my family anymore because you can't be related to someone who doesn't exist."

"Really? And what am I supposed to think of a woman who bonds herself to an outlander without the knowledge and permission of her family while she is betrothed to someone else. I'm just observing what I see," Embre sneered as he took a swing at Jiminy.

Jiminy easily dodged the punch. "Then get your eyes checked," he growled as he punched the insufferable Embre again, this time knocking him out.

Apolla shrieked as Embre toppled over. "I knew it was a mistake sending you here!" she shrieked. "And now look at what your stubborn willfulness has led to!"

"I don't know why you are yelling at me!" Fieri yelled back, suddenly losing her temper. "You should be thanking me! Now that my name is being struck from the records you and father can finally get the annulment you always wanted! And just maybe the two of you can finally stop making everyone else around you as miserable as you are!"

Apolla slapped Fieri. "That still won't get me back all the years I wasted on you," she said bitterly.

Fieri blinked back tears.

"Grandfather," she said pleading.

Fuego shook his head sadly, disapproval and disappointment radiating from him.

"I have no grandchildren."

Jiminy picked up the unconscious Embre and shoved him at Fuego.

"I think it's time for you to leave now," he said stiffly. "And take the trash with you."

I don't care how powerful you are. You're getting suspended if you cause any trouble.

I had a post where Ryo explained he traced the history of firebird culture and how it's degraded considerably, but it also involved setting forcefields around people to get physical blows to stop, and Lyn is posting faster than me to today...

"I think now would be a wonderful time for this visit to end. Apolla, be aware that in the future, should you attack one of my students again, the sun will not be far enough to escape a just punishment. None of you are welcome at Avalon anymore." Ryo snaps his fingers and Apolla and Fuego(still holding Embre) find themselves dumped unceremoniously just outside the school's gate, which close with a jarring slam.

"I'm very sorry, Feiri."

Fieri nodded in acknowledgement before the sobs started. Her whole body shook as she cried. She wouldn't have been able to stand if Jiminy hadn't been holding her. She could barely breathe. She'd lived with the fear of this for so long, but it still didn't measure up to the cold reality of being told by her grandfather that he had no grandchildren.
