The Common House was already packed, and the sun had not even set behind the western Ring district of the Tarheel Promenade. Standing behind her voluminous bar, the bartender and her servers were barely able to keep up with the drink orders pouring in. Normally, this level of business meant that the leaders of the Freemen were going to be meeting to discuss matters of import in the Bottoms, but as far as you have been able to tell, nothing is on the docket for this evening.

Could this commotion still be caused by the death of Freeman Caramine? That was weeks ago!

Luckily for you, one of your companions from the Arcanist's Circle got here early and secured you a table in the corner, away from the most boisterous celebrants. You can almost have a decent conversation, especially if you can find a way for the bard two tables over to put away his lute, or move to a different place in the bar.

Info on Freeman Caramine:
Freeman Caramine was a bloatmage who had been kidnapping people to sacrifice to some sort of machine. She had been defeated by a coalition of some of Kaer Maga's most powerful factions. Although the wizards of the Arcanists' Circle hadn't joined them in person, they had supplied the liberators with numerous alchemical weapons.

Feel free to warm up with the introductory RP. You have nothing scheduled at the moment, so this is just about hanging out after a hard day's work (if you have a job, that is). Remember that you all know each other. Only one of you had contributed to the Story So Far Doc, so there's more to be added there as well.

Male Oni-Born Teifling Samurai(sword saint) 2

Quintas checks his weapon, for a moment he thinks of going over to the bard and silencing him... but he doesn't want to attract any attention here and now. besides, he was not the type of person to deny other's pleasure... for long anyways. Quintas sighs... his black hair hid most of his face, his blueish skin, and read eyes. sure, here he wasn't discriminated against, but truly who would trust a teifling with anything. he looks to his companions and is relived he isn't the only oddball of the group...Just the most obvious.

Quintas orders a glass of wine before the waitress gets too far.

Discord Chat

The waitress catches the tiefling's order. "White or red, Quintas?"

Dark Archive

Male Oni-Born Teifling Samurai(sword saint) 2

Quntas thinks for a moment. Red,please he says, his voice rich and deep(think Morgan Freeman). He leans back and looks down at his helmet... the leather bands are old and worn from rain and road... he looks to his companions again and says "shall i ask the bard to quiet it down a little?

The door opens to the shadowy bustle of the streets, and you see no one. You have to look down to see Vigan; his long, gorgeous, flowing brown hair an echo of nobility that has a constant movement maybe catching the eye. He wears a tasteful brown tunic embroidered with brass-not one stitch out of place. His lapel sports a dark purple "D" rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees, like the twilight moon rising.

Scanning the raucous bar he quickly spots Quintas, and immediately seems perturbed. What the hell... he thinks ...red wine at this hour? Did I just step through a portal to another dimension... and quickly pushes his way through the uncaring, and wholly unaware crowd.

He reaches the table with a concerned visage *gasp* Not even a side dish... "Good lord! Look my friend, I think its about time you learned how to drink alcohol..." his eyes bulge and his voice is strong, educated, and mature.

Dark Archive

Male Oni-Born Teifling Samurai(sword saint) 2

Quintas frowns at the halfling. "So, you opt to give advice to the warrior, who is content with his choice? I am not hungry. And as you can hear, I'm trying to drown out the noise. A light buzz will do me good... even if I'd regret it later."

His tail flicks out and hangs out of the booth. It is like a lion's with long black hair on the tip, otherwise it is blue like the rest of Quintas.

If you wish, he also goes by Quint.

"Well, its just a matter of etiquette, Quint...er, protocol! If you will, warrior." He smiles, happy to see you again. "*sigh* But right, nevermind...they probably have no idea what a Bombay Brassiere’s Samundari Khazana Curry even looks like in this...taproom. So say, figure this is about Caramine-" he suddenly jerks his head to the right, gazing upon the bard a few tables away. His brow instantly furrows "In the name of...he does realize there's a 15th string?! Awful...truly awful."

As the door to the busy inn is closing after letting in more people a small earth colored creature slips in so that the spring on the closing door seems to send him in your direction. He seems to dart somewhat unnoticed through the crowd. The first thing you notice about Gnarl is how unnoticeable he is. He is average height for a gnome but dresses in more drab colors than most of his kind. And while not actually dirty there is a faint aura of dirt about him that seems to make it harder to see him. think Pigpin from Peanuts except its not as noticeable. It vanishes as he climbs to a chair at your table. His feet dangle a good way from the floor and he looks you over. This the Arcanist's Circle table? He asks more loudly than he is comfortable with.

Noting the bard playing a couple tables away his brow furrows slightly and dust begins to gather on the lute so that it becomes air born when the strings are plucked. What is initially a minor issue becomes more of an issue as it continues. This the at will Geo Kineticist ability at work here.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Vigan startles as the gnome appears out of no where, his hand going for the hilt of an old ceremonial looking dagger. Yet, the familiar way his nostrils quiver at the flowing particulate aura quickly lets ease take over. "Ah, Mr. Stonesproket! We haven't a chance to talk since...er..." noticing the lute take flight a slight smirk betrays his amusement.

Quintas isn't impressed with the gnomes stealth... not one bit. He takes a dip of the wine when it arrives... When is the last member of our paultry little group due to arrive?

The waitress tussles the gnome's hair and smiles. "I know, Gnarl, I was only kidding you." She walks away to then fill his order.

"So, what do you think Caramine was doing with that machine, anyways? I have a speculation if you would hear it. Hemotheurges use blood for their spells, right? I think he found a way to transfer the blood of others into his own body. Remember that pump? It would cycle with the same rhythm as a heartbeat..."

Male Oni-Born Teifling Samurai(sword saint) 2

Quintas huffs. All for show I say. You transfer someone else's blood to yourself... to do so would be a perversion. Just imagine mixing the blood of a demon or devil with your own. Quintas shakes his head.

The waitress returns with your drinks. "Here you go, chaps. Say, what is your opinion on the upcoming Rum Punch festival? You already got tickets for the insult contest? They're going fast if you want them."

Rum Punch festival (common knowledge):
Rum Punch is a Caydenite holiday that involves a lot of drinking that's recently become popular in Kaer Maga. The insult contest involves people insulting each other until someone loses her temper. It's always a good time, but has become so popular that the Caydenites are now selling tickets to it. You can decide for yourself if you have tickets or not. They cost 1 sp.

Gnarl considers. In this town of strange humanoids where most everyone is larger than him he finds it somewhat terrifying to think about openly insulting people who might someday find him in a dark ally. I think it might be fun to go and watch. he adds.

"Damnit, Ana, how in the Nine Hells did I let you talk me into this in the first place?" Theodric grumbles to his former student as the pair heads toward the Common House.

Entering the Common House the cantankerous man sees the mass of patrons already present and simply groans.

Noticing those that had worked for the Arcanist's Circle in the past, Theodric heads for corner. "Alright, what do they want from us this time?"

"My, you guys just keep on multiplying like rabbits. What, are there more of you hiding under the table?"

Before you have a chance to respond, the door opens and a familiar figure steps into the Common House. Dressed in wizarding robes decorated with Thassilonian runes, the human known as Hoborth the Unready shakes off the rain that must have just begun to fall outside. A tall skinny man with long red hair, Hoborth has been trying to become a member of the Arcanist's Circle for years, but has never been able to pass the entrance exams. Unwilling to take no for an answer, Hoborth continued hanging around the wizards of the Circle until they finally began using him as a kind of unpaid assistant and messenger.

He quickly spots you and heads for your table, clearly on a mission from the masters.

"Worth drinking? Probably not," Orwinnia says, sipping the harsh liquor, inhaling through her teeth to lessen the burn. "Still, better than nothing, and the price is good."

Her eyes alight upon Hoborth as he enters the tavern, and a smile curls upon her lips. "I was wondering when you'd arrive, Hoborth. Must be important to the Circle to get all of us together. What's going down?"

Hoborth clears his throat and glares at all of you in an imperious manner before pulling over a chair from an empty table and sitting down. He carefully folds his robes on his lap, brushing off a few motes of non-existant dust.

"Well, well, well, seems that you are already in your cups. I hope that this will not interfere with the task I am about assign you."

"The Masters have a task. They are in desperate need of several arcane reagents for their ongoing experiments. A merchant named Piddlestiff, er, no Piddlestump. No that's not it. " Hoborth momentarily rummages through the deep pockets of his robe, finally finding a small piece of paper, which he holds up to his face to read.

"Pitkenstump. That's his name. Well, this merchant with the components was supposed to have set up his wagon in the Downmarket nearly a week ago, but so far no one has seen him."

He stuffs the paper back in his pocket and raises his hand, signaling for the waitress. "Find out what's happened to him."

"What are the reagents in question? Getting those might be just as easy if not easier than finding out what happened to some merchant. Lots of folks disappear from the Downmarket area." the pragmatic occultist asks.

Sensing that his opinion is not particularly popular, not an uncommon feeling, he relents. "Alright, alright. I suppose our first stop would be where he was supposed to set up shop. Anyone have any idea were Pimplestuff was coming from?"

Gripping his chin tightly in thought "Yes, I know that fellow. Sells those lizard heads with the pink lace embroidery...or was that Pikenhorn..."

They are not things that are commonly found in Kaer Maga. You folks might not be aware of this, even though the City of Strangers attracts people from all across Golarion, we're still at the edge of the map here in many ways."

Vigan has heard of Pitkenstump before (the Masters have bought from him in the past), but doesn't know much about his business.

Does anyone else have Knowledge (local)? Vigan has already made his roll on Pitkenstump, so he can't make another.

Hoborth groans quietly, trying not to egg you on and make more bad puns on the trader's name. "I have been authorized to extend you each a line of credit of 100 sails for successfully producing PITKENSTUMP," he says, overemphasizing each syllable, " alive with his wares intact, 50 if you merely discover his current whereabouts without producing him alive and bodily with his wares intact. You are each obviously bound by the normal code of silence and non-competition that was part of the contract you signed with the Circle upon becoming members of the Outer Circle."

Sails are Korvosan gold pieces, the most common currency in Kaer Maga (which doesn't mint its own).

The wizard then pulls out a large parchment covered in small script, at the bottom of which is a space for each of you to sign. "Here is the standard contract which you'll need to sign. For those of you signed up for the Scry and Res program, please check the appropriate box and the funds will be taken from your payment."

The "Scry and Res" program is something each of you have had the chance to join in the past, and which you can decide now to join or not. It's basically is an insurance program that states that should you die while on a mission for the Arcanist's Circle, the mages of the Circle will scry to find your body, retrieve it if possible, and pay the Church of Pharasma to raise you from the dead. The program costs 25 gp to join and 25 per mission, which can be paid up front or taken out of your pay. There are numerous clauses and caveats to the contract, of course. One is that if your payments have not covered the cost of the scrying and raising, you agree to become an indentured servant to the Circle until the cost has been covered.

I don't. Oracles don't get a lot of skills. I plan on hitting the streets and using diplomancy after we're done here.

"Oh, Pitkenstump! Why didn't you say so? Those terms sound fair to me. Tell the Circle I'm in - what about the rest of you?" Orwinnia glances through the paperwork and ticks off the Scry and Res box.

"I'm game, certainly. There are a few reliable contacts I have in the outer wards...with time I'm sure I could get a leg up on the situation. Perhaps we could all send out our feelers and gather back here in a few hours..."

Will also use diplo to gather info

edit:

He adds "Good lord, another of those contracts...bleeding us dry they are. You know? I won't pay this time. From what we've been through I know I can rely on you all should the circumstances turn sour..."

Looking for a few additional players to join our group after we had folks drop. We haven't really begun the meat of the story yet, but you can see it HERE. Basically, you're playing "fixers" for a collection of mages known as the Arcanist's Circle in the Varisian city of Kaer Maga. You all know each other, and have worked together multiple times before, which means you are either natives to Kaer Maga, or have lived there some time.

Adventures will tend to be a mix of themes from X-Files meets Buffy meets Doc Martin meets The Eric Andre Show. No weirdos.

Basic Character Stuff:

2nd level
20-pt stat buy
2,000 gp character wealth, with no single item over 500 gp.
Any race/class you like from Paizo publications

Existing characters:

Gnarl Stonesproket (Gnome geokineticist 2)
Quintas Drakin (Tiefling samurai 2)
Vigan (Halfling illusionist 2)

Just post your ideas here, preference given to those who complement existing group.

Recruitment will be open until Wednesday, October 12th. If I really like a concept, I'll just ask you to join and we might close recruitment early if we get enough folks.

Sovereign Court

Hmmm! Your group could benefit from a healer-support type, or maybe a sneaky type (I notice that your illusionist has some Disable Device goin' on).

I'm thinking of working up a rogue (relic raider)/cleric who's a kind of a cross between Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Sister Stephanie (Father Dowling mysteries), with strong skills in the locks-and-traps and sneaking department as well as a few divine magical tricks.

Do you use background skills?

How do you rule the human FCB for shaman? The forums are still trying to determine if it works or not.

Will work out backstory later.

I've a Hearld Caller Cleric of Iomadae I'd like to offer for this. He's not a strong guy and realized early on he needed another way of defending the weak and after seeing creatures summoned that that is the best way he could protect others.

The campaign concept looks very appealing. I will be submitting an orc fighter (dirty fighter archetype) for approval.

Kaer Maga you say? Always an interesting place. I have a few thoughts around an occultist that might fit into this game.

I'm in a number of games with Jesse Heinig and may ask if he would be interested linking character backgrounds. @Jesse - Interested?

@GM BrOp - Any thoughts as to how many characters you will be selecting? Are you using Traits?

I'm dotting for interest, thinking of rolling up some sort of Investigator. Looks like you need a fair amount of skill monkeying in the group, and I think it could be a good fit.

Always up for a connection Talomyr! I'm tentatively working on Anastasia Lirel as my ersatz Lara Croft, but I could go in a totally different direction if it would make sense. I have a couple other concepts I've been thinking about trying, though with this group's arcane-heavy focus it would probably be best for me to stick with healer or rogue types.

Nero is nicknamed 'the shade'... he's not actually undead in any way. He has spent many years in Kaer Maga, since he was just a wee kitten. He didn't used to be black; that happened somehow when he got older.

Nero was not associated with any particular gang, but he got around the different criminal groups. He was a pickpocket, a damn good one, but he was also a skilled cat burglar, having slipped into some of the best-guarded houses and slipped out with the goods and no one the wiser. He is a type of person who likes to live publically, at least during the daytime.

Nero is a full black cat catfolk, lithe and quite confident. He tends to move with the confidence of a successful rogue.

[Ties] Nero would have been familiar with Vigan, an all-too familiar story in the underground. Vigan might have heard of him too, a child who grew up on the streets by avoiding people and stealing what he could to survive.

@GM BrOp - Three questions.

First, are you okay with application of stat modifiers for age? (I'm leaning toward a human who would already be in his 40's who would have been a former teacher/mentor to Jesse's Anastasia Lirel tentative submission).

Second, if you are okay with the stat adjustment for age, are you alright with me only building a 19 point build character? (In the spirit of openess, the character's stats after age adjustment would actually be the equivalent of a 22 point build character)

Example:

Stats as bought: 15 (7), 13 (3), 13 (3), 15 (7), 13 (3), 7 (-4) = 19 points adding the (+2 for human to INT after point buy as normal).

Age Adjustment for Middle Age (-1 to all physicals, +1 to all mentals) turns this into:

14, 12, 12, 16, 14, 8 (5+2+2+10+5-2 = 22) again with the +2 for human going to INT, for a final stat line of 14, 12, 12, 18, 14, 8.

I realize this is very much so number crunchy/optimized and if you would prefer that I not go this route, I fully understand but thought it best to ask.

Third question. Do you intend to use background skills?

You had me at Kaer Maga. Let me work something up.

Hello GM.

I would like to submit Virgil here.
He was in a home brew until recently the GM ended the game.
I hope that you will allow retreads, although I haven't really gotten to stretch his legs, as of yet.
I will adjust, as needed, today.

Thank you.

Edit: I would also like to know if you were allowing traits (2?), drawback (for a third trait?) and the use of background skills.

Talomyr checking in with my submission (pending the answer to the questions above).

Orwinnia is prepared to assist the group during her off-hours.

I'm interested, but first a question: what do you mean "No weirdos?" I thought Kaer Maga was basically the weirdo capital of the Inner Sea region!

The Exchange

Lucirel Backstory:

Lucirel was born in Kaer Maga lived in the Downmarket, with her parents selling fruit. At a young age, the arcanist circle saw her innate magical talent and brought her in for training. She has joined them and has been sent out to assist various teams in their tasks.

That was my attempt at humor.

To everyone who asked me about mechanics re: the game: don't worry about it until I pick you for the game. I am picking people according to their ability to write an interesting character concept and backstory. I am pretty much ignoring all mechanics (other than class) until then.

@GM BrOp - Any thoughts as to how many characters you will be selecting? Are you using Traits?

2-3 and yes.

GM BrOp, I'd like to introduce you to Dru'gan, orc fighter and one of many hardasses in the Arcanist's Circle's employ.
I will update him with traits, but he's essentially done.

Silver Crusade

I'm very interested in this, though there's so much cool stuff about Kaer Maga that I have way too many ideas. My current leading candidate is a human or half-elf Zeitgeist Binder Spiritualist with origins as a Tallow Boy. I'll have to skim through the Kaer Maga book a bit more and do some thinking about personality and such.

Sovereign Court

I've put in some short background info about Anastasia Lirel and linked her with Talomyr's character Theodric Mikalos as a former student associate.

Thanks everyone for your submissions! Lots of good ones, but I had to pick 3.

Here are the folks who I have picked to join our game:

Orwinnia Verezpan (Misroi)
Anastasia Lirel (Jesse Heinig)
Theodric Mikalos (Talomyr)

Go ahead and post your intro in the Gameplay thread

Thanks again to everyone for your interest!

Thanks for the selection. I'll get a post up as soon as I get home this evening.

Thank you - will be joining up when Theodric does!

Dotting for interest. I'll have a character by the end of the week.

Recruiting is closed, sorry.

Wonderful. I'll be along shortly.

Oops, I didn't notice the post.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Congrats!
