Ultramarine Devastator (Rank 7), Deathwatch Keeper

I think it would be reasonable to turn to the Captain for advice in the first instance. He's an experienced Deathwatch member, and as a Black Shield himself he might well have some words of wisdom about how to better integrate Astartes from very different chapters into a single effective Kill-Team.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

It is good you are talking about this stuff with the Watch Captain. I think you are about to initiate a part of the campaign that usually revels itself a bit later. Understand that there are many different factions within the cabal, and I do not just mean Ordos. There are puritans and radicals and every shade in-between. Eventually you will all decide where you stand on certain issues.

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

Even though I'm not going on the mission can I be part of the meeting with Inquisitor Van Vuygens in the gameplay thread?

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

Sure

Dark Angels Assault Marine

A question I have forgotten to ask. What are your comfort level with details in wounds, physical and psychiatric torture? I don't want to offend anyone and thought to bring this up before it was needed?

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

My comfort level is as far as you want to take it personally. As a combat medic in the 3rd ACR you would be hard pressed to disgust me. The only limits I guess are what the site allows, so I guess leave sexual stuff out since that seems to be our warped sense of morality these days.

GM, is it possible that we can get a major update to the campaign info soon? It seems that we are learning a great deal about the Calixis sector and it may become difficult to track information back to specific pages in the future.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

At some point, soon...soon is relative.

Guess I'm up see you all IC

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

We are getting to some investigation now. I know I set up spoilers a lot of times for the sake of brevity because of the limits of PbP, but do not think this limits your use of any skills. You can roll for anything as long as you give me an explanation of what you are rolling for. There is usually a lot more information to be had.

Yknow...it's gruesome but if we get really desperate we can just take a little nibble of one of the guards grey matter. It'll give us a chance to see through his noggin just before their guts were unceremoniously liberated from their body. If we're lucky they may have even seen their assailant.

I see no actual problems to this plan, and was thinking about doing it myself. However, I find it prudent to try other means first before devouring the recent dead.

Dark Angels Assault Marine

I want my apothecary :D

Male Black Shield Librarian 4

Well..devouring as a last resort. Im not sure any civilian onlookers will feel faith in astartes eating dead soldiers

Good lord I was joking about eating the guards. Seriously, that gland is one of the most ridiculous things in 40k and I see no reason to actually consider it a legitimate option.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

It makes more sense for certain chapters, and as it is in the game I would allow it, but I too find it a strange part of the lore.

I can see it as some kind of bizarre ritualistic cannibalism for chapters that have wandered way into "wtf-land", maybe even some really odd ultramarine successor that learns the codex by eating their mentor.

The problem for me is that in 99% of other cases it's simply jarring. Especially if it is done casually instead of as an absolute final solution. On the other hand, it makes a convenient way to explain away the myriad of other oddities in 40k fluff by saying "Well what did you expect? Space Marines eat peoples brains to gain their memories after all".

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

Their tasty jucy memories.

I'm about to start that discussion with the Captain about how to bring the squad closer together in the discussion thread. This is set prior to the mission and the entire team is there. Does anyone want to join me?

I'll join in spirit but I'm likely to remain silent unless directly spoken too.

Well technically speaking it's a common ritual among Blood Angels and their successors to drink blood and eat a flesh to some degree if I remember correctly.

There are also other ones, but it is more prevalent in the Blood Angels lineage.

The thing about the Blood Angels and (most) of their successors is that they don't actually like doing it. I'd imagine they go pretty far out of the way to keep the whole thing to a minimum. The exceptions being the Flesh Tearers and the Blood Drinkers which both try and turn the whole thing to their benefit.

That being said, the Red Thirst is an unwanted flaw. The Ompohagae, on the other hand, is considered a feature and was actually intended for whatever reason. I just think it's weird.

Elite Advance Due to extensive research by Brother Thedius you all gain Common Lore: Angevin Crusade +10 for free. Use this skill to recall anything about this recent Crusade including who was involved, battles, heros, and weapons used. I will add this to the Campaign Tab.

Ultramarine Devastator (Rank 7), Deathwatch Keeper

Thanks Thedius. I followed your research, it looks pretty valuable.

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

No worries. I'm not done yet!

Thanks GM. Nice to feel I'm actually doing some good.

Male Irish

I've never read the entire book blurb on the Storm Wardens, but they always struck me as Irish Rebels in SPACE! In which case I should get along fine with them

They always seemed more space scottish to me, braveheart and such they way they run around hitting things with their claymores. There's even a story online of someone who made a Deathwatch tac-marine of the storm wardens chapter named Dougie McIssace. He Caber tossed a Khorne Lord (who was wearing terminator armor) to his death.

"MUCKLE DAMRED CULTISTS 'AIR EH NAMBLIE BE KEEPIN' ME WEE MEN!?!?"

More Scottish actually, but in reality they aren't that different so it's normal to think either or.

Male Black Shield Librarian 4

@Nimon: Have I re-entered reality yet?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++AAR MISSION 3 ORENDEL'S TOMB+++++++++++++++++++

Ok that time again.

Best Role Player Mission 3 You all continue to set the bar high, and no b#~*%~@@ this is the best Deathwatch group I have ran as far as roleplaying is concerned. This Mission, I really appreciated the Good Cop/Bad Cop routine between Brother Lucian and Brother Elyas, and with Brother Lucian's actions during the ceremony he is going to get it this mission, but there was no one I thought did a bad job, and everyone has stepped up their game which makes this hard to chose. So congratulations Brother Lucian

Best Use of a Fate Point This could easily be a three way tie, between Brother Lutha, Brother Leon, and Brother Tellemachus. Brother Leon would run away with this had he shared the information he gleened from the FP he used. I was hopeing he would because that would have given Brother Lutha additional insight he could have used to Identify Brother Johann. Brother Tellemachus' had to use a FP for something that was from a defensive attack from a very anti-witch creature that hardened his resolve, but ultimately this was more of a personal victory so for this mission I am going to give it to Brother Lutha for rerolling his fellowship during a heated discussion that could really have gone south otherwise. Congratulations Brother Lutha

Best Kill Goes to Brother Elyas This was the easiest one to come up with, even though Tellemachus suffered the most from the Phyrr Cat, it was Elyas' blade that finished the beast.

Vote for MVP

Experience This is a close of the first "Chapter" so to speak, so experience is doubled. This is to account for a significant travel time between here and the next mission where you will continue to train and become more efficient as a Kill-Team. Primary Objective Deliver Sarcophagus/Receive Purity Seals Completed, 600 xp. Secondary Objective Investigate the break-in Completed 400 xp
Tertiary Objective Uncover Beasthouse activities on Orendel's Tomb. Going to give you a complete on this, but questions still need to be asked. 200 xp. Total Exp for Mission 3 1200.

Renown 5 renown + 5 additional renown for everyone except Brother Leon and Tellemachus. However, for going off-script you both appealed to the common man and you both receive an Elite Advance of Peer(Imperial Citizen) which works the same as talents with the same name. When dealing with normal Imperial Citizens you receive this bonus. This Advance is free to Brother Leon and Tellemachus, however the rest of you can purchase it for 100 xp.

Brother Thedius receives this xp also, as he did role-play research on the ship. And the elite advance Common Lore : Angevin Crusade +10 is granted to the Kill-Team for his efforts.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

Brother Arkhos, you can now bring your character up to the EXP level of the rest of the team as you have completed a mission with them. If someone would post that number here for him that would help me. Thanks.

Dark Angels Assault Marine

I believe it is 13,600 + 1200 total 14,800 xp.

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

Thanks for the XP. I'll assume no renown for Thedius

I'll post what I learned here for the others in a bit.

Ultramarine Devastator (Rank 7), Deathwatch Keeper

Thanks for that GM, I've found RPing via text quite hard, so I've worked on it and I'm glad it seems to have paid off.

I also want to say good job to everyone, including the GM, for making this game awesome. It's a lot of fun, and I'm glad I jumped into it as my first experience of PbP, so thanks all.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

You get the Renown too, the 10 point version. You can buy the elite advance if you want Thedius.

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

Cool. Thanks, that puts me into range for getting my power axe!

I'm of two minds about taking that elite advance. If I continue doing investigation work, it would be useful, but it's hardly thematic for Thedius...

GM:

I don't know how closely you've been tracking, but with this AAR I have 3 honorable mention.

MVP Vote
Brother Thedius

Reasoning
If it was not already self-explanatory at this point then I will do my best to do his actions justice.

OOC he dug through a pile of information in the search of anything that could help us down on the planet. While we also had some roleplay and investigation on our side it was limited by some political factors. Brother Thedius did not have such considerations and really maximized his favorable position.

IC Thedius continues to put aside some of his misgivings to work tirelessly for the rest of the team. Taking into account what Nimon said, Thedius worked non-stop trying to dig up anything useful the moment he became informed of the incident on the planet.

Ultramarine Devastator (Rank 7), Deathwatch Keeper

Hallan hit it right on the head. Thedius is my vote for MVP as well.

He's worked his behind off doing research pertinent to the current mission, and our wider situation. He's discussed with the Watch Captain about the intra-team difficulties we've been having, and has generally been a great contributor to the mission, despite remaining behind on the ship.

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

Awh thanks guys I thought I was exempt from the MVP.
My vote is for Eylas he seemed to be the one trying to move forward in the most tactical and in-character fashion during the game.

Follows is Thedius's report on what he has learned to the Team and his Captain. It condenses everything I've found so far into 1 post, it includes stuff from spoilers. My notes are in italics. Hopefully if someone else needs to take up the mantle of investigation this is all they'll need

The Tyrant Star:
Mass hysteria, riots increasing 1000% Piracy on the rise, and all manner of heresy in the Calixis Sector has lead to the investigation of the Tyrant Star. There is a prophecy that suggests this is the work of the Tyrant Star. Inquisitor Kryptman believed this was a hive fleet that had a migratory pattern, similar to that of insects, that may be related.

Currently the Well of Night is being fortified by The Iron Collar, a series of Fortress Worlds that form a front against the Tyranid attack. There is a series of ships on either side of the Well of Night that monitor what comes in and out. Recently Hethgard, one of the fortress worlds of the Iron Collar, has been under attack by a Tyranid advance force and it is possible something small has come through undetected .

The Unknown Hero:
Some believe the unknown hero to be one of the one of the Iron Hand clans before the creation of the Sons of Medusa chapter. Potentially the Sons of Medusa could claim him to be one of their own. This would make sense considering the location of a Sons of Medusa weapons cache under his shrine. However, the Iron hands never pressed the point of which side of the hero took in the dispute that caused the split, so the hero may be revered by all. Other chapters were not so in favour of this, but it was decreed by the war council of Grangold, so they complied.

The Hero was known for destroying some sort of bio-factory. His body was found by an Imperial Guard patrol after the incident, without power armour and very badly wounded. This may be related to medical tests that the Sons of Medusa wished to carry out on his body. Said request was refused by the Calixian Conclave. It also may be related to Yu'vath behaviour (see Bale-Chider and Yu'vath)

The Unknown hero had not always been kept at the shrine in Grangold, he was moved there in the last 200 years. The Original Shrine was held in a war-camp on Grangold that housed several different chapters, the Tigers Argent, The Charnel Guard, the Sons of Medusa/Iron Hands, and The Black Templars. Before he was moved the Tigers Argent were very much opposed to leaving him on Grangold, but the Black Templars, having the largest chapter presence believe he should have been preserved there. The Sons of Medusa and the Charnel Guard agreed as well. The Tigers Argent left for the Jericho reach after that.

Information on the deeds of the Unknown hero seem to be kept by the Adeptus Ministorum and the Sisters of Battle.

Sons of Medusa:
A time of much infighting within the Iron Hands, lead to the creation of the Sons of Medusa sub-chapter. The incident is known as the Moirae Schism and it divided the Iron Hands chapter based on different views on the Omnissiah. Reports of infighting in the Iron Hands continue today and the Sons of Medusa seems to be a home for those that feel outcast by their clan, Iron Hands or other successors chapters of the Iron Hands. They are barley recognized as an official chapter. Many in the Imperium, and the Iron Council itself, believe the Sons of Medusa to be nothing more than a collection of outcast Astartes.

The Sons of Medusa had tried to set-up a fortress on Grangold shortly after they became an official chapter, the Bale-Chider assault prevented this from ever coming to fruition. The Sons of Medusa successfully founded a Fortress world in the Taelus System after their failure on Grangold.

The Sons of Medusa requested biological test to be done on the Unknown Hero that was sent through official channels. It was denied by the Calixian Conclave. The nature of the tests and the reasoning for it's refusal is an area of investigation still open

The Tigers Argent:
The Storm Wardens Keeper said the The Tigers Argent “were” a noble chapter. Thedius didn't notice this at the time and it could do with being followed up on. He also failed to comment, possibly on purpose, on the incident that lead to them leaving the Jericho reach.

The Black Templars:
The Black Templars showed a lot of authority over what was done with the Unknown hero. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they were the most numerous chapter present, or perhaps there is another reason. Both themselves and the Storm Wardens have a lot of experience battling the Slaught, who are said to have a lot of similarities with the Bale-Chider and Yu'Vath

Bale-Chider and Yu'vath:
The Bale-Chider and Yu'vath were the main Xenos threat in this region a long time ago, but their home worlds were destroyed and have not been seen in the sector for over a thousand years. The Bale-Chider seemed to be subservient to the Yu'vath, even though considered a separate race. They were used as shock troops being sent in by the dozens. They appear like lithe bi-pedal humanoids covered in tentacles like that of an octopus and three eyes, two regular size, a third that is larger in the middle of the odd head that becomes a mess of tentacles. They fire energy weapons that seem to have a biological power source.

The Yu'vath's ability to control the Bale-Chider as a sub-servant race is interesting and might be related to a lot of the controversy over the unknown hero, specially considering that he was exposed to the aliens bio-energy while in a weakened state without power armour on.

The Slaught are similar in behaviour to the Bale-Chider and Yu'vath according to the Storm Wardens Keeper on the Pious Immolation

Dark Angels Assault Marine

My MVP vote goes to Thedius for the great research he undertook while we were planetside.

If they want to include you Brother Thedius I will not stand in the way, the MVP vote is player choice.

MVP votes - Brother Thedius 3

The next mission, which I will put into context later, but I want to explain now so you can discuss it OOC, is going to be a choice.

You have been given some clues to follow up on The Infamous Beasthouse, Heretics that collect dangerous Xenos and use them for sport. You can pursue those which will lead you to a couple of planets in one direction, or you can continue with the original plan and go to Scintilla(Calixis Capital-Home to Calixian Conclave and Tyrantine Cabal head quarters)to the Watch Fortress and report in.

You can look at the map in Dark Heresy if you have it of the Calixis Sector, basically the trip to Scintilla will take 2 days through the warp. Phyrr will be closer to a full week travel.

Dark Angels Assault Marine

I personally wouldn't mind hunting some heretics, but IC I feel we should report what we have discovered and take the next mission assigned, my character has no personal desire to hunt these heretics in particular.

Which mission has a higher chance of me getting to shoot some 'Nids?

Hammers of Dorn Assault Marine 1

I concur with Elyas, but only count my vote in the case of a draw. As I mightn't be in the next mission

No idea, but congrats to all the winners, you deserved it.

Will make the math to get all that XP and catch up with the rest.

I've been giving it some more thought and I think the best idea is to actually split the party. From a completionist standpoint this would allow us to get the most done.

Beyond that, however, there are a few more considerations. Obviously we can't just abandon our orders to go chasing after the heretics, but there is also a serious corruption problem in the Calixis sector so far and it doesn't sit right with me to just ignore our chance to do something.

Now if we have part of the team go to meet the conclave then we can have the other half go after the beastmasters. This works really well because the Lady will likely know she's been compromised and will start covering some of her tracks, but if she sees the Pious Immolation moving away then she'll probably let her guard down. Then the team going after her can pick up transport on a Rogue Trader ship or something and we can sneak in where she isn't expecting it.

Well why don't we make possible teams according by our areas of expertise and probably chapters in some cases.

Dark Archive

Male Human Dungeon Master

Unfotunatly there is only one ship so you have to chose one destination. There will be missions in the future where splitting the party might be viable.

We can't buy passage with a Rogue Trader?
