Man, my Avatar looks like an Evil Sith.
Formula: The players play characters who are living during the Cold War between the (old) Galactic Republic and the resurgent Sith Empire. The PCs are agents, willing or unwitting, of the Republic during this dark time.
Theme: Vigilance against tyranny.
Tone: The tone should be consistent with Star Wars. An action oriented campaign with occasional dips into Darkness (ala RotS and ESB).
FURTHER PRODUCTION DESIGN
Aside from making you watch the films (again, but then it's impossible for watching Star Wars too much, right?), these come from the expanded Universe.
The Adventures of the First Season will take place on:
Tython
Tython's gallery from SW:TOR.
Tython is like Alderaan, it is a garden world that is a DNA library. Unlike the other garden worlds in the Core, Tython is almost pristine wilderness. It is because of this that its rich in orgone energy (i.e. the Force). When the Force (which is the creative force in nature) was undeniably discovered by scientists a motley group of scientists, philosophers, mystics, and skeptics converged on Tython to debate and discuss the Force some 25,000 years before the Battle of Yavin. Out of these debates was formed the Je'daii which split into two groups of warrior monks. Those that followed Ashla (light side of the Force) became the Jedi, and those that followed Bogan (the dark side) became the Sith.
By the time of the Cold War between the Republic and the Sith Empire, the Jedi Order returned to Tython. Tython is still a pristine garden world that is rich in the Force.
---------------
Coruscant
Coruscant's gallery from SW:TOR.
Coruscant was a garden world like Alderaan, Corellia, and Tython. However, the planet is an eucemopolis (the whole planet is one big city), so there is a strong presence of DOR, or deadly orgone energy. In order to counteract the effects of the city, orgone accumulators is big business, and the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was one big orgone accumulator. DOR isn't necessarily the dark side of the Force; as it affects Sith as much as it affects other beings. Most people in the city are uneasy, and sickness, anxiety, and unrest is common here.
-------------------
Alderaan
Alderaan's gallery from SW: TOR.
Alderaan was the site of a major battle between the Sith Empire and the Republic. Darth Malgus led an invasion of the planet's major city, and Satele Shan managed to dispatch him with the help of Commander Jace Malcom. Now the planet is in disarray as it left the Republic over an internal struggle for the Throne.
-----------
Nar Shaddaa
Nar Shaddaa's gallery from SW: TOR.
Nar Shaddaa is another eucemopolis. However, it is a small moon, and wasn't subject to much Terraforming. The whole city looks like Las Vegas at night and has all the fun of Las Vegas, New Orleans, Monte Carlo, and Dubai combined. and so the DOR here has different effects. The general populace is manic depressive. Therefore, the place is fast paced. A good number of the population are addicted to drugs -- including death sticks and other things like Brilliance, Ultimate, and tobacco for example. And yes, you can get a Slave Leia outfit here.
Knowledge: Galactic Lore check 20
Brilliance acts like magic mushrooms and peyote. Besides giving a chemical high, the drug provides enhanced Force Sensitivity for a short duration; during which the user will experience Force visions (i.e. hallucinations). Brilliance is, logically enough, a restricted chemical substance.
-------
Arkania
Arkania's Wookiepedia entry.
--------------------
Notable NPCs
Seth Jaran (Male human Jedi 7/Jedi Knight 3): A gruff Jedi Knight, he acts tough because his heart was harmed by the loss of two Padawans under his care to the dark side of the Force. While adventuring on Nar Shaddaa, he lost his third Padawan in a battle with one of his former padawans who had become a Sith Inquisitor. He was forced to dispatch him, and he returned to Tython.
An Ataru master, Seth Jaran is capable in many other styles except Juyo, relying on Ataru in duels. He is regarded as one of the best Ataru duelists in the Galaxy, only to be eclipsed by Lord Ravage -- a Sith Juggernaut -- and Satele Shan, the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order.
Valaluu the Hutt (male hutt scoundrel 11): Valaluu is one of the few Hutts that are making overtures to the Republic on Nar Shaddaa. He knows the value of Republic ties and is hoping to redeem himself by shutting down Valaluu Enterprises and starting an upscale business.
Commander Salcan (Male mon calamari Soldier 5/Officer 3): One of the Republic's brightest, Commander Salcan is an ancestor of the famous hero Admiral Ackbar. Salcan helped the Republic liberate Mon Calamari from the resurgent Sith Empire during the Great War. Mon Calamari was inducted into the Republic after the battle of Mon Calamari. Still a commander, Commander Salcan is the leader of a small Republic Task Force.

Congratulations for those who have been selected!
In a few days, you will embark on an ambitious journey: an RPG Campaign designed around the concept of a T.V. Serial program. Now unlike other series, which are strung along without a clear ending or strong character development (because the program might be canceled at any moment) our campaign has a clear beginning and a clear end.
The rules for playing on the boards are as follows:
Bolded text are for in-character dialogue.
Italic text is reserved for in-character inner monologues.
Text in 3 braille - .: is for Force telepathy. :.
Bigger text is for shouts!
smaller text is for whispers.
Dice rolls are handled in between [ dice] tags.
Out of character text is handled in between ooc tags.
Assigning Guardians:
Nyla is Seth Jaran's Padawan and Valaluu the Hutt sponsors Chal Haako currently.
So, check in with your aliases here. If you wish to expand and intertwine your character backgrounds, this is the thread to do it! The Campaign will be separated into PbP threads with the Season number indicated. for example, our first gameplay thread will be: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Season 1.
Episodes (adventures) are separated by the Season number and Show number. Like the pilot is 101 or 1.01. :)
So lets get it together and have some fun!

Thank you for picking me Elton, glad to be on-board :)
How would you like to handle me owning a spaceship? I took the wealthy trait to represent my backers and a reasonable hook to have it, I was hoping to put my trait credits into paying for the ship in time, only getting hard cash for the trait once the debt is paid in full, and I was hoping that as a result I could keep my starting credits to buy equipment.

I don't see that as a problem. I'm reading through Starships of the Galaxy right now.
I was thinking of your uncle's ship being a stock corellian light freighter with some modifications. Lets see:
Correllian YT-2000 Lt. Freighter
Formally named the Lady Felicity, you may rename it anything you wish. Your ownership of the ship has been registered into it's Transponder Code.
see page 155 of Starships of the Galaxy for stock statistics. It has the following modifications:
Condition: Used
Total Conversion Power Converter (this Engine will convert any matter absolutely into usable energy).
2 Quad Laser Cannons
Hyperdrive x1 (Backup Hyperdrive x8)
Smuggling Compartments
Atmospheric Thrusters
Combat Thrusters (Init +4)
you have 4 slots left to modify the ship.

Lady Felicity sounds perfect :) She'll be so names after my childhood pet cat. I'm going to brush up on starship combat and add her to my profile.
As to intertwining backgrounds, anybody have any requests? I know Iona needs a mechanic and gunners (lifters ;) Every ship needs a crew so feel free to apply ;P

Chal Haako |

I'll be picking up mechanics at level 2
Chal walked away from his most recent interview of Valaluu the Hutt shaking slightly, his skin mottled and his lung pods pumping.
The interview had started predictably enough - he was forced to empty his bank accounts, transferring the funds to some sort of shelf account held by the Hutt, then he was forced to empty his OTHER accounts after some interrogation by the Hutt on pain of being 'Thugged'. He'd been allowed to keep the credit chips in his pocket in a rare moment of benevolence.
Then Valaluu was clear to point out the importance of good health and how breathing is a wonderful thing... both of which would be denied Chal if he tried to escape Valaluu's latest opportunity to repay favours owed, or was not loyal to the mission that he was about to be extended by the Republic.
Then with the warning fresh in his ear cavities, he was ejected unceremonially out of Valaluu's building and sent on his way.

Some thoughts on intertwining our backgrounds:
Iona will be traveling the spacelanes on Lady Felicity and it would be an obvious choice for her to have stopped of at the various planets you guys are writen as starting out from. The most diect path I can see is that she traveled to Nar Shadda from Iridonia, picking up Kaath, Chal and Thollus. Kaath could have been hired on as a mechanic, Chal as a navigator and Thollus could be a paying customer.
Maybe Iona picked up some cargo headed for Tython?

Kaath hasn't checked in yet.
I may have to drop him if he doesn't check in tomorrow. :( But yeah. It makes sense.

A man affiliated with Valaluu comes up to you. "Valaluu wants you to purchase the programs first," he said. "Lest you want to stand in front of an Imperial Grand Jury for data theft. And you know how swift Imperial Justice can be."

*rubs temples* ..sigh.. I was well on my way with writing up my background when I suddenly got the urge to google the word magnate. Funny how a single word, when used in-properly, can mess up the meaning and context of an entire text...
Starting over...
Magnate?
Magnate, from the Late Latin magnas, a great man, itself from Latin magnus 'great', designates a noble or other man in a high social position, by birth, wealth or other qualities. In reference to the Middle Ages, the term is often used to distinguish higher territorial landowners and warlords such as counts, earls, dukes, and territorial-princes from the baronage.

Good. Now that everyone has checked in, I can make the series outline for the first season.
Episodes
The episodes are divided into three types. Stand alone, Continuity, and change-of-pace. Stand alone episodes are further divided into Ensemble and character focus episodes.
Ensemble shows follows the group. In RPG game speak, this explemifies the formula and can represent the various Flashpoints of the MMO, or a Spacebattle. The flashpoint The Esseles represents this kind of Ensemble programming.
A character focus episode concentrates on one or two of you. For instance, a character focus show focusing on the resident Jedi will have to do with her being a Jedi, while a character focus show dealing with Kaath Adak has to do with his character background. My advice? Be the least cookie cutter as possible. I'm not talking about being like a stock character (i.e. Darth Vader, or Don John from Much Ado About Nothing).
Continuity episodes advance the over all storyline. Since the storyline is about Vigilance against Tyranny (of the Sith Empire from your point of view); you will be dealing with plots adapted from Cold War thrillers -- mostly. :P
Change of Pace episodes We do something different to keep the series fresh. Time Travel, Change of Milieu, doing something comical, or something really obscure like "Star Wars: the Holiday Special." (okay, you can all gag at that. GL should have learned his lesson and understood that T.V. is an entirely different medium than the Silver Screen. Although the Droids animated series worked).
------
Each episode is divided into:
---------------
Note though, we will be running at your collective pace. :) The Editing job that GL and Ben Burt do is way too precise for us to replicate. :)

Iona Liaan |

Okay, you can kick me. :)
No worries, I should have just asked. I took the word for meaning cartel or organization and wrote out from that.
On the subject of asking, can you explain the term cookie-cutter to me? I think it means you want us to avoid cliches and mookish behavior but I'd rather take the risk of sounding stupid than being stupid.

In modern Storytelling theory, there are eight different archetypical characters. You can write any story with these archetypes. In fact, Star Wars IV: A New Hope has all the Archetypes in perfection. They are cliches, but they are cliches that work.
A cookie cutter character, however, is a walk-on character. He is bland, and is just there for fun and profit. They are cliches too, but they don't work.

There is an Empire?
*confused*
No matter... I will simply use simple data algorithms. If pooint zypth is here, and pooint c'kulk is there I can just let the navcomp do the work... I just need to recheck the results and reconfirm the output.

Ok. Done.
I decided to go a more compact way with her background, leaving more to interpitation an open for exploration.
I put Lady Felicity in Ionas profile as well, if someone would please look her over to see if I'm missing something I'm going to go through the starship rules in the core book.
Otherwise Iona is good to go.

Elton |

I must admit, I'm looking forward to my first fight using the wuxa rules. The imagery should be spectacular >:P
Well the same rules work for GL's space battle choreography. You just need to watch the first trilogy and RotS. Focus on the Battle of Yavin, The Millennium Falcon's escape from the Empire in ESB, and the Battle of Endor. In RotS, you just need to watch the first few minutes of the film.
Also, the Star Trek films and other films with space battles are helpful.
Movies to avoid:
* Dune
* 2001, 2010 (Which never happened, except for 2010's prediction of a Black President of the U.S.A.)

Nyla Soresu |

got her gear all together now.
Nyla is coolly confident, intelligent, an aspiring tactician, and firm in her moral standings. She would make a solid leader in my opinion but I'm not certain how or if the dynamic of the rest of this group following a 17 year old girl would work.
in any event, I'm open to the idea of it, what do the rest of you think?

Iona Liaan |

...Leader huh?...
Well, I kinda got my heart set on Iona being a leader. Maybe not the leader but she's built as a 'face'. Plus it's her ship. She's the captain and your crew. Either that or paying customers which still makes her the captain.
Iona may not have the moral standards of a Jedi but she is is dedicated to seeing her crew come out alive and has a drive to see things done and coming out on top.
Maybe as things grow Iona will accept the Nyla's leadership, but to start I'm seeing a catfight on the horizon is she's challenged.

Thollus |

I think there may be a bit of separation in the leadership roles, with Iona taking care of ship-board dealings and Thollus taking on that which occurs outside. Perhaps, we'll have to see how thing shake out :) Thollus has the capability and confidence to lead, but his uncertainty of where he sits in the world may hamper him at first.

Iona Liaan |

We seem to have built nearly the same character mechanically Thollus except for Iona's focus is persuasion (haggle baby, haggle) while Thollus's is deception we're both built as faces...
I dunno... I don't want to cause dissension but I just don't see Iona as anything but a leader, I'm having a hard time imagining her following you atm.
Again, maybe as things grow?

Iona Liaan |

It may well end up being situational. The Jedi is the leader when dealing with Jedi. Someone else in some other situation.
I was thinking the same actually. In the end though it will probably come down to who posts first, unless the scene in question relates to a specific pc.
But there's one thing we should bear in mind, though the game is set up to look like a tv show with a dedicated plot and story line we're still five different players with five different view on things. Add the GM and we've got a sixth view in the mix.
With that in mind I have no problem backing down from any claims of leadership though I still find it weird to be a ships captain without a plan if you catch my drift. But Elton is right; Not all Jedi's or noble's are built for leadership, Iona f.ex. will probably take levels in scoundrel or soldier and be an ace pilot / gunslinger rather than an officer or sum such. Thollus looks like he's headed for the mastermind prestige class so he'll probably be more built to lead than Iona but I just don't want it assumed that she'll follow. I want it RP'd IC. She's just not conceived as a follower. (Think how Han Solo dug in his heels when Leia tried to get him to work for free, but he came through in the end.)
My qualms with following the others atm mostly relates to the fact that we're strangers IC and IC it makes no sense for a rich noble ships captain to follow a strange passenger or a teenage jedi she's never met.
But let's bear in mind that this is a game and as such is for fun and meant to be enjoyed. A game with an awesome concept, nice tweeks, an interesting looking cast and what looks to be a passionate GM, but still a game so let's just respect each other and enjoy the process.
Sorry for the long post on what everyone was probably thinking anyway but I just had to put out what I was thinking.
btw. Remember the dynamics of Han Solo and Luke in episode IV? That question of group leadership never got fully resolved in the movies IMO.
