Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
"Keep your weapons ready men! If we need to take on these fish-men again...the Captain will teach them to mess with us!"
Rhialla "Buxom" Blackwater |
"Aye, might be well to set a watch on either end of the ship with a lantern for the rest of the night." Rhialla suggests.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Randall McNally |
Perception check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
"And that's not all" Randall says "There's more of those sahuagin out there amongst the sharks. They don't seem to be in any hurry to approach the ship. Might be rethinking their tactics about attacking the ship."
Herzag |
"Hope they come to the conclusion that climbing on board is a better option" - Herzag chuckles.
Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
Ashlei pushes aside a dark red curl of hair from her eye.
"We already doubled the watch..or was it tripled? Either way, our best defense against those buggers is our spell casters. They should get some rest and re-energize. You too Randall! Right captain? The men can fend off basic stuff with our crossbows and such for now."
Sniffing heavily the tangy air of the lagoon, Ashlei sighs softly.
"At least we know why there is nobody living here. Right? Herzag, which watch do you want...one of us should be on watch at all times to keep these curs in line. Not like they can bail on us now..."
Herzag |
"I prefer one of the middle watches, when it is darkest" - the half-orc nods, leaning over the side to peer at the waters again - "I'll find some nice spot where to wait for these curs if they decide to climb on board, and hear them if they do not" - then looks around at the crew with a glare - "And whomever is on watch with me will stay in line, or I will send them for a dive to wake up"
Guess the watches have been decided anyways? :D
GM Wulfson |
1d3 ⇒ 2
The crew settles into watchful wariness as it keeps an eye on the circling sharks and their sahuagin handlers. Slowly the shadows of the cliffs creep over the cove as the sun sets, plunging the ship into darkness. With the watches set, two sailors fore and aft and the officers of the watch on the maindeck, you are as prepared as you can be. Which is why Ashlei and Herzag are startled by the screams coming from the foredeck.
Rushing forward they find not attacking sahuagin but animated vines descending from the darkness above. Four vines, 2 each, are currently wrapped around the two sailors on watch. Blood oozes from the skin of the sailors as the vines seem to be absorbing the bodily fluids in some kind of sick feeding.
Initiative:
Ashlei: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Herzag: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Neela: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Percival: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Randall: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Rhialla: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Creature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Sailors: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Ashlei and Herzag will be able to act in round 1, all others will take a full round action to emerge from below decks.
Round #1: Ashlei, Creature, Herzag, Sailors.
Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
Seeing the crazy vines feeding on the crew members, Ashlei immediately calls to the crew, disgust and anger clear in her voice.
"Ware above! Cutlasses, torches and boarding axes! Cut those vines off those men! No one steals from us!"
She then attempts to move within range (20ft?) to getin range of the tendrils, quickdraws two daggers from her improved (blinkback) belt, heats them up and throws one at a tendril attacking/feeding on a crew member!
Swift action to activate my scorch ability! GM, feel free to throw in a range penalty if you think I can't get close enough in a single move action!
Dagger(Thrown w/PBS): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Damage+Scorching+Precision: 1d4 + 3 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 + 5 = 10
Possible Crit!
Dagger(Thrown w/PBS): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Damage+Scorching+Precision: 1d4 + 3 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 1 + 5 = 11
Map looks good GM, but is there some reason Herzag and I are on there twice? Are there tokens for the vines?
Herzag |
GM Wulfson I post my actions or wait for the creature?
GM Wulfson |
Go ahead and post. I'm tied up with meetings today and won't be able to update until this evening.
Herzag |
I am unable to move my token in Roll20. Would it be possiblr to place Herzag somewhere else instead of in the middle of the two sailors. I would like him to be to the right and down of sailor 4, or left of sailor 2 please? Also, I assume these can't be flanked? :P
Herzag wades in directly at the first sailor - "What the hell..?! - he roars, daggers firmly in hand ever since he heard the first scream - "Are you seeing this Ash?!"
It is but a split second for the half-orc to change the grip into something more appropriate for slashing, and laying into the closest vine.
Dagger slash: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Damage if it hits: 1d4 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Dagger CRIT?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Additional damage if it crits: 1d4 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
GM Wulfson |
Ashlei's dagger cuts through one of the vines holding the hapless sailor literally like a hot knife through butter.
Ashlei stares in surprise as another vine soon lowers itself from the canopy overhead to replace the one she severed. The creature maintains it's hold on the sailors it has already ensnared as they scream in pain as more bodily fluids are drained to feed the creature.
Damage (sailor #1): 1d8 ⇒ 4
Damage (sailor #2): 2d8 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9
Pull (sailor #1): 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (20) + 19 = 39
Pull (sailor #2): 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (20) + 19 = 39
Damaged and weakened the grappled sailors can offer little resistance as they are hauled off the deck 30 feet into the air by the vines encircling them.
Herzag decides to throw his dagger as the sailors are hauled up beyond reach. his aim is true as the blade slices through one of the vines holding the second sailor, severing it in two.
The two grappled sailors struggle futilely to escape the vines but are unable to escape their embrace.
CMB (sailor #1): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
CMB (sailor #2): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Sailor #3 can only stare on in horror, dropping his cutlass and drawing his crossbow, as his shipmate's are drawn into the darkness to whatever fate awaits them above.
Sailor #4 remains at the ship's wheel and frantically rings the ship's bell in alarm.
The remaining officers and crew below decks are startled awake the clanging of the bell and the shouts and screams of combat above.
GM Wulfson |
Round #2:
Ashlei
Creature
Herzag
Randall
Neela
Sailors
Percival
Rhailla
Ashlei you're up.
Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
Cursing all plants and green things, Ashlei then screams up at the darkened canopy and quickly disappearing sailors.
"THOSE MEN BELONG TO US!"
She then turns to the remaining sailor nearby.
"Stay safe and warn the others of the attacks from above! I'm going up to get our men back!"
She then quickly turns to the mast and rigging nearby and begins climbing as fast as she can in order to catch up to the missing men...hopefully.
Climb(Accelerated Climbing): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Spending Panache Point to add my Derring-Do!: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Herzag |
Just a note to say Herzag is not 'throwing' his daggers - he was trying to cut the vines with them.
On a different topic, aren't we allowed na AoO as the vines retreat?
Percival Asploric |
The ringing of the bells awoke him and he sat up in his bed careful not to accidently elbow Rhialla tucked in beside him.
"By Asmodean's bright red ballsack!" He cursed rolling out of bed and trying to get some semblance of his gear on himself.
Herzag |
Assuming the sailors are now 30' in the air, I can't reach them so:
Herzag follows suit after Ashlei - "What are you doing crazy girl?" - he grunts after her, climbing the mast/rigs as fast as he can.
Ash, isn't Accelerated Climbing at -5?
Climb (Accelerated): 1d20 + 8 - 5 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 5 = 21
Then he simply snaps off to the side, his strong legs propelling him through the air to reach the vine he had attacked before - "Watch and learn" - he taunts the woman even as he flies like a missile.
I hit one, but it is still dragging the sailor, right? So I climbed... half my speed should be 15', then I try to jump and grab hold of the vine again. Plan is to hack it definitely, though I dont think I can attack this round :D
Acrobatics to jump and grab hold of the vine: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
So GM Wulfson, were we entitled an AoO last round when the vines recoiled?
GM Wulfson |
I don't believe anyone was threatening the vines when they recoiled.
Rhialla "Buxom" Blackwater |
Jumping up in alarm a second after Percy, Rhialla lets loose a string of obscenities, throwing on her armored coat over her naked form, just managing to close a button or two as she grabs up Brine's Sting and dashes to the door, throwing it open. "C'mon luv"
Armored coat can be donned as a move action, weapon grabbed up as part of second move action to run to and out the door
GM Wulfson |
The vines continue pulling the captured sailors up into the air, drawing moisture from them as they go.
Damage (sailor #1): 1d8 ⇒ 6
Damage (sailor #2): 1d8 ⇒ 7
The sailors cease their struggles and go limp in the creatures embrace as it, satisfied it can no longer draw nourishment from them, releases them to plummet to the deck below where they land, unmoving, with a sickening thud.
Damage (sailor #1): 6d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 5, 5, 2) = 21
Damage (sailor #2): 6d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 1, 2, 4) = 17
Herzag and Ashlei can only watch as the sailors fall to their deaths and another vine descends from overhead, to the deck below, seeking more prey.
Okay, I think I've adjudicated this correctly. It's a free action to pull the sailors another 30 feet into the air, a standard action to maintain the grab and feed, then another free action to release the sailors, and then a move action to lower another vine.
Herzag, you can re-post your action to account for the changed situation.
Round #2:
Ashlei
Creature
Herzag
Randall
Neela
Sailors
Percival
Rhailla
Everyone else can go.
Herzag |
Wow... After all that, my actions counted for nothing :P
Herzag shouts at Ashlei - "Get back here you crazy girl!! It is snapping our sailors like twigs!! Get below deck!" - then he turns around at everyone he can see - "Stay out of sight! Behind a closed door, or barred trapdoor! GO NOW!" - and moves below deck himself, or inside a cabin.
Intimidate to get them moving as fast as possible: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
Vexed, Ashlei keeps climbing.
"We're already at this thing's mercy! We certainly can't sail out of here with that thing picking us off! So...get off your asses and load the ballistae! Point them up with torches attached to them!"
@Neela...I'm pretty sure plants are Knowledge Nature in most cases. =)
GM Wulfson |
The creature is a Canopy Creeper, a rare semi-sentient plant that lives in the jungles of Garundi. As a plant it is immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms), paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep, and stun. Canopy Creepers are also immune to electricity.
Canopy Creepers can animate the vines around them to ensnare their prey which they then feed off of and weaken by absorbing the victim's bodily fluids while they pull them to it's maw.
Living in the hot jungle climate the Canopy Creeper is extremely resistant to fire whereas such climate acclimation has made them susceptible to cold
Randall McNally |
Randall emerges from below, wiping the sleep from his eyes, as the two sailors bodies slam into the deck. Peering up into the foliage overhead he mutters "Can't see a damned thing." As he cats a spell four glowing orbs of light coalesce and swirl around him before, with a gesture, he launches them into the night sky.
Randall casts dancing lights which illuminates the area around the creature from dim light to normal light.
GM Wulfson |
Snapping to from Ashlei's orders, Rosie begins gathering her gunnery crew and rushes them to the stern castle where the crank and load the two ballistae.
The better disciplined Rahadoumi sailors draw and load their heavy crossbows while peering up into the canopy overhead. Whereas the original sailors from the Wormwood draw their cutlasses and glance fearfully around themselves waiting to be attacked.
The Rahamdoumi take a standard action to load their crossbows and prepare to fire next round. The standard pirates draw their weapons and ready an action to attack if they, or anyone around them, are attacked.
Herzag |
So they basically disregard my orders completely, every single one of them?
Percival Asploric |
Staggering out of the cabin he growls lowly
"Sentries on deck repor..."
He began his eyes instantly noticing the recently dropped bodies.
t.
He finished dryly hefting the pike in both hands the magical nature of it growing in length.
Dont worry Herzag we will flog them all or something.
Rhialla "Buxom" Blackwater |
So they basically disregard my orders completely, every single one of them?
Yeah but they're standing in puddles of urine and won't look in your direction
Rhialla bursts up onto the deck rapier in hand a hair flying wildly like a true embodyment of Besmara, random flashes of naked flesh visible under her armored coat as she strides across the deck, looking up angrily at the illuminated vine creature after she notices the drained corpses on the deck.
"You don't take a member of this crew without paying for it @$%&%er!" she shouts as she flicks her free hand up, a stream of water freezing into a spiraling shard of ice as it flies at the creature.
Icicle: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Cold: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Neela |
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
"It's a canopy creeper, a carnivorous Garundian plant! Won't get affected by most effects, and immune to electricity!"
Appearing abovedecks, she tries to entangle the vines in a sea of webbing! If possible, cast web to grapple the vines, using the ship's mast and the pointy thing in front as anchors? It seems like the plant isn't on the map, are we able to just fight it by assuming the vines are by our grappled crew?
Rhialla gets the benefits of the Fortune hex!
GM Wulfson |
Rhialla, the creature is 100' above the deck (40 feet above the crow's nest) far out of the range of your icicle. You can take another action if you wish.
Top of Round #3:
Ashlei, you're up.

Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
Ashlei will finish climbing to the Crow's nest if she can. Keeping an eye out for vampire vines too!
"Where are we with those balistae?! Light! Get some light up here! They need to see to target...whatever this thing is!"
Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
GM Wulfson |
Ashlei finishes her climb to the crow's nest as several glowing balls of light zoom past and begin circling around, halfway between her and the canopy overhead. Peering into the vines she can make out what appears to be a large knot of vines amassed over the center of the ship. As she watches, a beak-like maw in the center of the mass opens and closes as other vines whirl around it. As she watches four tendrils descend tot he deck below to snatch more victims.
There are currently 20 sailors on deck, various officers, and you. The sailors are targets 1-20, Rosie and Sandara are 21 & 22, respectively and you are 23-28, alphabetically.
1d20 ⇒ 10; 1d20 ⇒ 11; 1d20 ⇒ 5; 1d20 ⇒ 3
Vine #1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30; Grab: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (7) + 23 = 30: Damage (feed): 1d8 ⇒ 5
Vine #2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15; Grab: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (7) + 23 = 30: Damage (feed): 1d8 ⇒ 2

Vine #4: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23; Grab: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (1) + 23 = 24: Damage (feed): 1d8 ⇒ 4
Each grappled sailor takes a -1 Strength as their bodily fluids are drawn out via the vines ensnaring them.
Okay, everyone else can go.
Randall McNally |
Randall looking up into the vines overhead begins whistling a tune. All those within earshot being to feel their spirits lift as their nerves begin to soothe and a sense of calm washes over them.
Randall begins to Inspire Courage to all those who can hear him. Everyone gets +2 to hit and to damage rolls
Rhialla "Buxom" Blackwater |
Rhialla, the creature is 100' above the deck (40 feet above the crow's nest) far out of the range of your icicle. You can take another action if you wish.

Previous round
Rhialla looks up focusing on the plant creature illuminated by the dancing lights as she begins to cast a spell, a shimmering heavy cutlass of force materializing to attack the vines.
Spirtitual Weapon: 1d20 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 3 = 14

Ashlei 'Burnout' Mamoud |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"Any reason NOT to simply move out of sight and below deck?" - Herzag inquires from his companions. At the moment he is inside a cabin, maybe talking through a window or something.
Ashlei's perspective is pretty obvious to her: We're between a rock and a wet place. If we just hide below decks, then the shark people can come and sink our ship with us trapped inside without a fight. She would rather fight the plant creature than wait below decks to drown and lose our only ship in the process.
GM Wulfson |
The sailors immediately on either side of the grappled pirates jump to their crewmates defense, hacking the vines with their cutlasses.
1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17; 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18; Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 + 4 = 12
1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 = 22; 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7; Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (6, 1) + 2 + 4 = 13
1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 = 22; 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6; Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5
1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 2 = 15; 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 = 11; Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (2, 5) + 2 + 4 = 13
They manage to sever three of the vines holding their mates and manage to damage the other one quite severely. Before the remaining vine can pull the hapless sailor into the air Rhialla's "blade" cuts it in two.
The Rahadoumi sailors fire their crossbows at the mass of vines above but, due to the dim light, their bolts sail harmlessly off into the night.
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 = 11
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 = 7
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 = 14
Rosie and her gunnery crew load and aim the balistae up into the vines and fire the siege weapons at the creature. The first crew's bolt flies harmlessly through the vines whereas the second crew, watching the flight path of the first crew's errant shot, readjusts it's aiming point and strikes the creature's central mass.
1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 2 = 13
1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 2 + 2 = 24; 3d8 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8
At her mental command, Rhialla's blade flies upward piercing the creature overhead.

I can understand that, I meant getting the ship maybe further into the cave or bay. Also, if the shark people come on board, won't the tentacles grab them also? Bottom line, I don't think any sailor has the slightest chance against those tentacles, so they are just going to their deaths.
Then again maybe I didn't realize we had that many sailors on deck - I'm seeing a lot of d20s being rolled, but I don't see them on the Roll20 map.
Rhialla "Buxom" Blackwater |
There's nothing to make us believe they are't working in tandem. They attack using sharks...that fails. Why not plants? Having them all on deck would clutter the map
GM Wulfson |
As I said upthread there are 20 sailors, plus all the Named NPC's, except Fishguts, and the PC's. so there are roughly 30 people on deck. Speaking of Named NPC's...
Round #1
Sandara emerges on deck shortly after Randall, having paused long enough to grab her gear. Looking around she takes in the chaos on the deck and begins casting a spell. As she finishes she is cloaked in a suit of ephemeral chain mail.
Conchobar follows Rosie to the Sterncastle as she orders her gunnery crew to their stations. Stepping out of the way he looks up the the creature looming over them. Cursing as he realizes none of his spells will have any effect on plants he unlimbers his short bow and takes aim. He unleashes another stream of epithets as his shot falls short of the target.
1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 2 = 5
Round #2
Sandara looks skyward a the creature and begins casting another spell. As she does so a small funnel cloud begins to form in the sky next to the Creeper.
Conchobar fires another arrow at the beast swearing all the while, a habit he seems to have picked up from Rosie, as this arrow too falls short. throwing his bow down in disgust he steps up to help the ballista crew load another bolt.
1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 2 = 4
Just waiting on Neela and Percival to join in. If they haven't by tomorrow I'll go ahead and 'bot them.
Neela |
Sorry, got confused and didn't know it was my turn too!
Seeing an ally abovedecks, Neela tries to help her to prevail in the combat. "Sandara--fate is on your side!"
The witch gives Sandara some Fortune and sustains her magics further. [ooc[Fortune Hex, cackle.[/ooc]
Current beneficiaries of Fortune: Rhialla, Sandara.
If any of the following roll a d20, they immediately get the benefit of the Fortune hex: Herzag, Percival, Randall
Percival Asploric |
"Aw hells..."
He muttered stabbing the pike into the deck and scowling up at the plant. He crouched down and waited the next time a vine came down trying to grab one of his crew he would be ready.
So If he can Percival will hold action in an attempt to grapple a vine going for a sailor and climb his way closer to the monster if possible.
GM Wulfson |
You can climb one of the vines on a DC:5 (I'm going to say it's equivalent to climbing a knotted rope) Climb check. You can move at half speed and 'Take 10' if you wish, in which case it would take you seven "checks" to climb to the top (or three full rounds and a move action). Conversely, you can climb at an accelerated rate (moving 30' an action as opposed to 15') by taking a -5 to your roll (no 'Take 10' allowed, even if doing so would still put you over the DC). Climbing in this manner would take you one full round and a move action to reach the top.
GM Wulfson |
Neela uses her magics to unravel and reweave the strands of fate surrounding Sandara, her hex blessing the Cleric with good luck.
Percival looks around the deck, a faint smile on his lips as he watches the crew jump to the aid of the grappled sailors rather than watching out for themselves. He hatches a plan that just might work as he waits for more tendrils to descend from above.

Ashlei throws her starknife at the creature, it's red hot tips glow brighter is it whirls through the air. Unfortunately it misses the creature as it sails between the vines only to disappear and then reappear back on her belt.
4d30 ⇒ (29, 26, 5, 28) = 88
The creature above takes control of 4 more vines and sends them down to the deck below. The first vine wraps around Neela and she begins to feel faint as bodily fluids begin to be drained by the tendril grabbing her. Two more vines lash out at Randall and Rhialla, respectively, who manage to avoid them as the vines close only on empty air. The remaining vine grapples another sailor who writhes in pain as he too begins to be fed upon by the vine.
