Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Fjori will also agree...let the creatures fight and then move in

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Ajani could try to use his Sealord ability to try and command the octopus...though I hate for Quillin to have wasted a spell.

M Gnome Conjurer

Ajani- oh, command would have been good. I thought you were just suggesting a wild empathy or something. Maybe next time, there's no putting kraken, jr. back.

The weird creature charges at the octopus snapping its claws.
oh SNAP!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 +2 if charge allowed.
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
meh

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

Mel gives the creatures a few seconds to become fully engaged before kicking off and skimming around the outside off the cavern.[delay one round]

Swim speed 30' water breathing.

Male Human (Qadira) Sorcerer 3 (Seaborn Bloodline)

Hassan, chastised by his poor performance since returning from near death, stands by quietly while the others debate plans of attack, and waits for a clear opportunity to put his skills to their best possible use.

Holding my action.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Fighter (Brawler) 3

Bart will also hold.

Bart taps his foot impatiently as he imagines the underwater carnage taking place without him just out of his reach.

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Seeing the others holding their actions to see how the two creatures react to each other, Ajani decides to do the same, figuring that charging into the fray would only invite physical harm upon his rather squishily-furred self.

Ditto!

Okay. I will need to roll up and play with myself this afternoon...ahem phrasing. Anyway I will post the first round in ab it.

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

LOL Archer!!

M Gnome Conjurer

Quillin treads water quietly with his ears perked for signs of ensuing chaos.

And chaos does assuredly ensue. Entering the cavern the reefclaw jets at the octopus with claws and spines bared and closes the gap only to be immediately gathered up by the cephalopod's various arms. The reefclaw struggles for a moment only to be brought into the great maw of the octopus and practically bit in half.

As is its method the reefclaw flails in the octopus' arms as it shudder to death and thrashes about, its cruel spines savaging the octopus' face and tentacles. The octopus throws the corpse of the reefclaw away and a low gurgling noise fills the cavern. It sounds suspiciously like TTtrreeesssssppppppaaaaasssss

Kno:Arcan or Kn:Nature DC 15:
There is a possibilty that this is not an octopus but actually a Devilfish

Since it is not moving and none of you are really in the cavern I won't call for init yet.

M Gnome Conjurer

Quillin frowns as his wee kraken ally is swiftly dispatched.

know arcana: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

"AH, that ain't no fair. That's no natural octopoid, it's a devilfish. It may be short a tentacle, but it makes up for that in bad attitude. It spits blinding blood and its bite is nasty and venomous as well."

"It's still a sea creature though. Do you think you can set it straight, Ajani?"

do we still have fungal light? If not I'll send a couple dancing lights to illuminate the creature.

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

"I can certainly try to command the creature, but doing so will require us to get in short range of it. Within 30 feet or so, I would say."

M Gnome Conjurer

"Well, we ain't exactly in the Grand Palace of Cheliax. Bart and Fjori can stand between you and gurgly as you move in or we can just keep lobbing things at it until it closes."

and how far away is it, oh Dreadful Captain?

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Kno; Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

"Good gods!! Its a Devilfi....oh..you already figured that out huh? Never mind then."

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Question for our fearless leader: The Sealord ability for Aquatic Druids states that it works like Command Undead, which states that you can only control more than one creature if the multiple creatures HD total is not higher than your level. Does that mean that, since the devilfish's HD total is already greater than my level, attempting to Command it would auto-fail?

M Gnome Conjurer

yeah, I think that is right unfortunately. It's over your HD limit. Hammer time.

Male Human (Qadira) Sorcerer 3 (Seaborn Bloodline)

Knowledge: Arcane => 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Hassan offers his shortspear to Fjori. "Axes and swords are no good underwater. Perhaps you could use a weapon that is a little bit more... سجن... what is the word? Pokey?"

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

Mel had held back as the reef-claw was disposed off almost before the fight began.."Devil fish you say..well..to the Devil with him then"

She waves her rapier.."Spears, tridents..daggers even"

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Fjori takes Hassan's offered Spear with a nod of thanks
"I will return it to you once we have dealt with this creature!"

Fjori will move towards the Devilfish to attack.

From your position its a 25 foot swim to the opening of the cavern and the devilfish was dead center in a room that was roughly 30 by 30. Since you all will know that it has reach its 40 feet or so to the devilfish with AoO being provoked if folks close to melee. There is still fungal/algae light. The current passage can fit two of you side by side. Those of you with swim speeds can charge. The water is at a minimum ten feet deep through out this section. Swim checks for those w/o speed and keep in mind that restricts your movement speed. What's the battle plan then as far as prep and getting up to the thing?

Male Human (Qadira) Sorcerer 3 (Seaborn Bloodline)

I can cast Touch of the Sea now on anyone who needs it. This might be the big underwater fight.

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

I suspect you are right

Male Human (Chelaxian) Fighter (Brawler) 3

I'll certainly need it. Bart may not like it, but he won't turn it down. I'll swim in alongside Fjori.

"Devilfish ye say. Heard a them from back home. Right nasty they are. I'm comin' too."

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Huffing a disappointed breath at realizing the devilfish is too powerful for him to attempt to control, Ajani mutters an incantation at the conclusion of which his hand begins emitting a soft, icy blue glow. "Dangerous though it may be, if I can get close enough to touch the thing, I can help end the fight more quickly."

M Gnome Conjurer

Quillin stays well out of reach treading water as the others move forward.

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

A question...if I use hydraulic push from my cutlass, might it allow me to get close to the devilfish without provoking an AoO from the beast?

You mean like to shoot you at it like a torpedo? I would probably rule that it gives you some measure of bonus to your AC but not negate that AoO entirely...Who is Hassan enchanting? Ajani and Mel have swims speeds absent that correct?

Male Human (Qadira) Sorcerer 3 (Seaborn Bloodline)

Hassan moves so that he is submerged up to the waist in water. He focuses his arcane energy, muttering incantations and performing waving hand gestures. He casts Touch of the Sea, first on Fjori and then Bart.

He looks to Quillin, but the gnome seems to be planning to stay back and cast from a distance.

Water Blast 6/7
1st Level Spells: 4/6
HP: 8/18

Hassan has a natural swim speed, so that's everyone except Quillin. I can also do Air Bubble, but I'm not expecting we'll need it for the duration of this fight. Those Touch of the Sea spells will last 4 minutes, grants a 30' swim speed and a +8 to swim checks.

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

I seem to getting 1's in every one off my games today

M Gnome Conjurer

Catching Hassan's look, Quillin purses his lips innocently and looks casual as he continues treading water at the back of the pack. sure. cast from a distance. that's the ticket.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Fighter (Brawler) 3

Feeling rather fishy, Bart moves up with the rest to attack the devilfish.

Init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Well I will fire off my hydraulic push at the devil fish, then close to attack

Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

M Gnome Conjurer

Are we rolling Initiatives to keep this moving?
OK, Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Yeah, delay

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Initiative1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Ajani will delay until some of the other heavier hitters have closed, then attempt to approach the devilfish so he can deliver his touch spell.

Male Human (Qadira) Sorcerer 3 (Seaborn Bloodline)

Initative => 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Hassan remains out of range of the devilfish, and throws off a Magic Missile.

Magic Missile => 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1) + 2 = 5

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

Mel lets Bart and Fjori occupy the creature whilst she tries to get round behind it

If allowable whilst swimming

Acrobatics to avoid AoO 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

M Gnome Conjurer

Round 1
Quillin (23) delay
Fjori (17+)
Hassan (17)
Ajani (16)
devilfish 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Bart (5)
Mel (4)

Quillin hangs back in the passage as the tall folk adroitly swim into the devilfish's lair. The dim light of the phosphorescent algae above accentuates the pale bones that litter the widened passage and long thin black worms flute from empty eye sockets and pits in the broken bones below the tide line.

Ok throwing this out there.
Fjori- are you using push against the devilfish or as some kinda jet assist?

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

I was using it to try and deflect any AoO the creature might get for reach, so I could get close and attack, but it I can get the same effect from jet-assist...then that will work as well. Just want to bypass its reach, if possible.

Fjori- OK, gotcha. well, not sure how effective it will be, but give me a roll. btw, it's not clear what the modifier is on the cutlass, but at CL 3 I'm thinking CMB +4.

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Yeah, I am not sure either

Knock off guard - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

I am also choosing this creature as the target of my Freebooter's bane, giving everyone a +1 to hit and damage.

A'ight. that's pretty good, Fjori.

Fjori swims forward with a tangible malevolence that rallies his crew mates against the horrible septepoid. A purple tentacle shoots toward the Ulfen. With a twist of the magical cutlass, Fjori directs a blast of water that knocks it aside as he moves in to threaten the great head.

Hassan stays back and sends bolts of arcane force that strafe the monster.

Ajani- moving yet or waiting until after Bart and Mel?

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Waiting.

The sea monster responds to the humans' affront with a gargling howl as it releases a cloud of slimy black blood that stains the water dark as night around the thing. In an instant, it grasps Fjori in its barbed tentacles tearing the man as it pulls him toward its deadly maw!

Fjori- 15 hp, grappled; the good news is that the devilfish no longer threatens, the bad news is that everyone that approaches within 20 feet of the devilfish must make a DC 15 fort save or be nauseated. Also the blood provides total concealment underwater for the DF. It is still currently visible above water though.

Round 1
Bart
Mel
Ajani (delay)
R2
Quillin (delay)
Fjori (grappled)
Hassan
devilfish

Female (posing as male) Human Swashbuckler Rogue 2 (favoured class)/Urban Ranger 2

Fort Save1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Mel feels horribly Ill and cannot attack.

Male Human (Ulfen) Ranger (Freebooter) 3

Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Male Vanara Druid (Storm) 1 HP 10 / 10; AC 17/13/14; F+3/R+3/W+7; Init +3; Per +9

Fort Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

What's my range to the devilfish?

Ajani Ihejirika wrote:
What's my range to the devilfish?

Ajani- 30'. I'll put a map up next round.

OK, here's a sketch map- green grappled, yellow nauseated, foggy black blood. I still need Ajani's action and word from Bart.

map

Bart save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Bart and Mel follow right behind Fjori, but are nauseated by the viscous unholy slime that fouls the sea water around the devilfish. Things look dire for the crew with both Bart and Mel crippled by nausea and Fjori likely to be torn to shreds by the tentacled abomination!

Ajani (range 20 ft)
R2
Quillin
Fjori (grappled)
Hassan
devilfish
