Welcome to the discussion thread for the Hell's Rebels Campaign. Please look at the Campaign Info tab for background information and rules about character creation.
To begin character creation, click on "My Account" in the top line menu of the Paizo Forums. You will be prompted for a signin even if you are already signed in (to verify that you are you before account changes are allowed).
The third box in the left column is for Messageboard Aliases. To start a new character, click the "Create New Alias" switch at the bottom of the Messageboard Aliases box. All you need to create the alias is a character name. You can select a picture later, and you can change the name until you have made 10 posts under that name. You do not need a faction.
Once you have created the alias, it will be displayed on your alias tab, visible when you click on your name on the top menu (Hello, Name). When you click it from the alias list, you will be on the information panel for that alias. You can edit the alias with the button on the upper right and store all sorts of information there, from stats to gear to spellbooks - whatever you like. By convention, we put our stats first. Here is a good, brief example of a formatted stat block. Formatting features like italics and [/b]bold[/b] are described at the bottom of each text entry box, under "How to format your text." Click the Show button to display the list of tags allowed in the posting.
Right now, I am preparing the campaign and recruiting a few mentors for those who have not played Pathfinder before (or who have not played much). You can discuss questions/concerns here, or you can PM your mentor for specific advice/information.
Welcome! Feel free to talk about character creation outside this forum, on Vent or other personal chats. A lot of the base classes and races should look familiar to you, though their roles may differ from what you expect based on how the character is tailored. A fighter can be a tank, but so can a cleric, who also heals, etc. We'll stick with core classes and races to make it simple.
Getting Started!
1. Download and read the Hell's Rebels Player's Guide. The link is under Player Resources on the Campaign Info tab.
2. Think of a name and create an alias with that name.
3. Post here and introduce yourself!
Don't worry too much about a lot of the stuff in the Campaign Info tab. We'll take time to get the characters built and the party equipped, and we'll go slow enough that you'll get the hang of things.

GM Treppa |

Hi, everyone! I've been looking at stat blocks. They look great so far, but I do have one request. Can you (Pansy :P) copy/paste the campaign trait and the reason for being at the rally into the backstory area of your character so I know what they are? Thanks so much.
Sounds like we have four or five more -- gleep! How about we give 3-4 more days for character creation, then we'll get started, say, Wednesday night/Thursday morning (unless everyone's ready before that).
The way this works is that I will open a Gameplay thread by making an initial introductory post and attaching the gameplay thread to the campaign. Then you'll see the post when you click on the gameplay tab of the campaign. New posts will show up in parentheses after the title of the tab. Once I do that, you are all free to make introductory role play posts. It's always polite to give a physical description of your character and their attire so everyone has a good mental picture. Here is a good initial post from another game so you see what I mean.
Normal pbp convention is to bold conversational posts and to italicize internal thoughts or telepathy. Different people do songs differently. Bold and italic is fine for songs. The bbcodes for bold and italics are under "how to format your text" at the bottom of the text entry box.
OOC tags (out of character) are used for in-game out of character talk, if it's brief, such as movement or clarifying combat actions. Longer questions or chatter or inter-player chatting should take place in the discussion thread.
Here's a great example of bolded speech, italicized thought, and OOC commentary to clarify actions described in the role play post.

This seems like a good time to point out that you can edit or delete a post for up to an hour after it has been made. This includes changing the name it's posted under. The options will appear near the timestamp of the post, but only for you! Nobody else can modify or delete your post. At the end of the time limit, the options disappear.
The clever folks at Paizo have made it so die rolls do NOT change and you'll get the same roll in the next post. So deleting a bad roll won't help. It's coming to get you.

Moonstep |

And, I know it's a long one, but I couldn't help myself. I spent some time fleshing out Moonsteps' back story. I may have to make some changes somewhere, as her cloak could be considered magical, so, either she doesn't use it, or her mother gives it to her later in the campaign when she can use something magical. She is wearing a cloak, but I've not given any properties to it.
edit: I just lost 2 hours worth of writing. Apparently I took too long writing it and timed out. omg, I'm going to cry!

Moonstep |

I rewrote it. /sigh I suppose it wasn't such a bad thing. I think I got it even better this time. :D This time I wrote it in an open office document and saved it. lol
I use Firefox browser, though my husband prefers Chrome. See what you think. ;)
edit: and yeah. I've been writing for a long time. I KNOW better than to not do a copy and save before I click finished on a browser doc! lol

GM Treppa |

OK, it sounds like we have 7 for sure, 1 in-work, 1 joining late, and another possible. That gives us 9-10 max, which is a LOT for a party. Standard party size is 4-5.
Bonnie and I were talking and there seem to be two choices:
1. Split into two game thread, so you would have to put 4-5 players in one thread and 4-5 in another.
2. Leave everyone in one game and you guys can choose a party of 4-5 for each mission. There are generally multiple missions available, so we can have two groups running through two different dungeons simultaneously. If we do that, I'll have one group on the gameplay thread and the other group in a thread called "recruitment" - which we obviously don't need for its named purpose!!
Do you prefer one group split for missions, or two groups which do every mission?
The other question is: what's our posting expectation for this game? Bonnie mentioned 3 per week. When we are in combat, you basically get one post each round - you can speak freely otherwise (short speech), but you can't take more actions than that. If we want combat to move along briskly, we'll need to post every day or every other day minimum. Will that work?
Generally, if somebody doesn't post within the allotted time in combat, I will post a conservative, common-sense action for them. I can also make a LAST CALL post, at which time anybody else in the party can act on behalf of MIA party members, then I'll post a few hours later and move us along.
Thoughts? Concerns? What's our posting expectation for the game(s)?
Note: I put a link under the Player Resources spoiler on the campaign tab to a google drive folder containing helpful maps.

Pansy Hornblower |

First and foremost, thank you for the maps. I am a visual person, and I think they will really help.
Personally, I like the idea of one large group with smaller teams doing missions. My only reservation at this point is how (if at all) that will affect the leveling process. As I recall, the campaign books are designed to get players to a specific level before going on to the next book.
For posting timeframes - what does everyone think about generally 3 times per week (M-W-F), but posts while in combat happening at least once a day (they are usually much shorter and don't take long to write).
Also, if everyone does post early, the GM can move ahead and make her post so that we have the possibility (but NOT the requirement) of going a little faster. Going faster than the agreed-upon number of posts is strictly up to the situation and the moment, and we make an agreement that NO ONE is ever to be slighted or made to feel guilty if they can't post sooner. Real life is more important than the game. Really! :)

GM Treppa |

It is, but if somebody vanishes for a week, you don't want the entire game held up. That's a good way to have the game fail. That's why I generally do the GM posts to move things along if somebody can't make it - no pressure on the player if they miss a day. Things will proceed regardless. It's certainly not meant to shame or belittle the person who misses!

Pansy Hornblower |

Yeah, I only meant that if we were running ahead and someone didn't post that was okay. GM should totally post for someone who is late (relative to agreed upon deadline, not accelerated posting) so as not to hold up the whole group.

Moonstep |

Sorry I was AWOL yesterday. My question regarding splitting into teams or doing 2 groups is: How much work is required for YOU as GM for one vs the other? Which way is easiest on you? I'm good with either way you all decide.

GM Treppa |

It doesn't make much difference to me, to be honest. What one group does is give people the chance to take time off without leaving the gamee, so the game can progress. I can give broad hints as to whether small parties are fine or the whole group is needed. So if you all want to RP together, one group is best.

GM Treppa |

OK, I think we're about ready to start. If you could all edit your character page on Paizo and do the following:
Race: fill in as appropriate
Gender: fill in as appropriate
Classes/Levels: Please use this format:
Class lvl; Init +x, Perception +x; F +x, R +x, W +x; HP (current/max). {Optional: daily consumables, conditions}
So my paladin has:
Race: Human(Taldan)
Gender: Male
Classes/Levels: Paladin 5; Init +0, Perception +0; F+10, R+5, W+8; HP 29/50 {Lay on Hands 6/6; CON: -1, LVL = -1}
When I make a post for him, it's easy for both me and my GM to see his most vital stats at a glance, without clicking links all over the place.
Thanks so much for your help with this!

This is my bio:
My maternal grandfather was a prosperous trader and merchant by the name of Thadius Orion. He had many daughters, and sent them off as brides to the sons of other merchants across Golarion to cement trade deals and make himself even richer. The youngest of these, Paulina, was sent to a merchant's son in Avistan, far distant from her native city of Kintargo, along with a rich caravan that held her dowry. On the way, however, they passed too close to the orcish Hold of Belkzen and the caravan was attacked. The aging leader of the orcs, Hyack Deathstalker, took a liking to Paulina, however, and kept her alive. Almost two years later, I was born. The elderly Hyack loved me, in spite of my half-blood, and trained me well in many fighting disciplines. I grew tall and strong, and was able to care for my mother and tend to my father as well.
When I was 15, however, a rival orc clan decided that my father was a ripe target and tried to kill him and all of our clan. Father decided that rather than risk me, he would send my mother and I back to her father in Kintargo. Over my protest, he sent us back to Cheliax [the city of Kintargo is in the country of Cheliax] with a bodyguard of ten fierce orc fighters. As we neared the dwarven city of Janderhoff, the dwarves saw us, mistook my mother and I for human captives, and killed all of our orc bodyguards to "rescue" us. Once we explained what had happened, the dwarves, as an act of contrition, returned all of our valuables to us, escorted us to the city of Korvosa and bought us passage on a ship from Korvosa to Kintargo.
I arrived in Kintargo still grieving for my father and the orc friends killed in the fight with the dwarves, but my mother and I were at least safe in my grandfather's large home. Safe, but not loved. As a half-blood, I was shunned by the rest of the family, and all of Kintargo. They never made any attempt to teach me human manners, so I was left in my barbarian state, refined by orcish standards but completely lost in human civilization. My mother, too, was not treated well by people, although her father made sure we never wanted for anything. The only person who paid any attention to me was one of my mother's brothers, who had decided to join the Hellknights instead of following his father into trade. This uncle, Jullian, saw me practicing my fighting skills one day shortly after we arrived and took me under his wing. Thereafter, I was often to be found in my uncle's shadow, and he trained me right along with the men under his command. I even briefly met Octavio Sabinus, the Lictor of the Hellknight Order, and was immediately impressed by his physical prowess and striking looks. I secretly learned all I could about my new hero, and kept track of his doings.
Three years after our arrival in Kintargo, now 18 and at my full growth, there has been an upheaval in the city. The old mayor, Jilia Bainilus, has disappeared and a new mayor, Barzillai Thrune, has been sent to govern the city. Octavio has also not been seen since Barzillai took control a week ago and instituted martial law, and I'm getting concerned. I have heard there is going to be a protest in Aria Park, and a rumor that Octavio might be there, so I'm going, hoping to get a glimpse of him and see for myself that he is okay.

Does Pathfinder allow the class Sword Singer?
That class was one explicitly forbidden by my old DM when I played D&D. Of course he also refused to use anything but D&D 2. 3.5 was out then and he didn't like the new rules and additions, lol. Oh, did I mention he's a rather sadistic DM? My rogue, Kira, was one of the very few characters to survive his campaigns for more than a few months. She lasted 2 yrs and finally met her end as a stone statue of a bat.

GM Treppa |

I don't see the Sword Singer class. They converted a lot of old special and prestige classes to Pathfinder eventually, so it might be called something else. Depends on its original source and if Paizo could get permission to use it, blah blah legal stuff blah blah. :)
And you played 2nd Edition? THAC0 and all that? Hard core! 3.0 and 3.5 were better, but the change to d20 was a big one. I grew up on AD&D with D6's. Back in my day, we didn't have d20's! We had d6's and we were happy to have 'em!
*shakes cane*

GM Treppa |

Clarifications:
It's mid- to late-morning now, when most people start thinking about what to do for lunch.
For this "social combat round", pick ONE action and make ONE roll. There are multiple things to roll in each action so that different builds can take advantage of the action. If you don't have Diplomacy but your Perception is high, you'd probably choose to Eavesdrop rather than Chat, for example. There will be more rounds.
If you want to interact with somebody and I haven't specifically described them, please go ahead. If you want a glass of wine, go over to the wine vendor and start the purchase. I'll roll with it. You can even describe the vendor or the wine or whatever - I'll RP it with you if you want, or you can simply hand over coin and walk away. Or if you want fried fish or to buy a string of beads - go ahead. If you want to entertain the crowd, go ahead. It's all good.
Hope that all makes sense. Feel free to ask questions about the game (technical or non) here. I'm pretty easy-going and want you guys to have fun. After all, that's what games are for!

LOL yep THACO and all that. Bobs campaign had been running for 14 years when I joined it 10 years ago. :D It's still running. He did allow the D20 dice, though. He considered the Sword Singer class to be OP and wouldn't allow anyone to be a Sword Singer. I think it's because someone did have one once and he couldn't kill it. ;) lol
I played a game called Timelines that was being created as we played it back in '86 & 87. It was very like D&D except you could travel through time, so it got really different at times. At one point we went back in time and brought back viable dinosaur eggs to hatch for "pets". ;) Got a little weird when we went way forward in time once. D&D type people like elves, dwarves, drow and half-dragon or cat people were a bit of an anomaly in the year 7689. >.<I gave up my catwoman, though when the DM kept giving me fleas. /sigh

Whisperleaf |

I've created a Halfling Druid who was a Fey Foundling. Found and adopted by a human family. My only problem is that this requires I choose a racial trait. Took me awhile to figure out how to do it, but I'm not sure if I did it completely correctly. I chose "Custom Trait" and then typed "Human" in the box and chose Racial Trait. I don't know if I was supposed to type in a race, or a trait that humans have, such as +2 to all abilities or something like that.
Oh, this is Elizabeth ;)

Jext Cursed Sword |

I have a question for Treppa, if I were to ask a NPC a question do you RP as them? Or is that something I have to write and you just give me the end result of it and then I make it go along with the story as in writing my character's response to the way the roll went?
