Joanna Whitehall
"If abhorring cold-blooded murder in the name of an evil god is ignorant, then ignorant I will gladly be," Joanna says in that same icy tone that had taken her voice since they fought the Lepescus, "You have been warned, and now you shall face the judgement of the Inheritor."
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Using her shield, she knocks the sickles aside to allow her sword to strike unopposed at the cultist that Ziomarra did not hit.
"How many people have you killed? How many lives have been snuffed out in the name of your false god?"
Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Despite the cold, controlled face she's wearing, Joanna is really, really upset by this whole mess. It probably wouldn't take much more to make the paladin lose her temper in a really ugly way.
Briana Kaddren
Sense Motive (Untrained): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
"Especially since a few of you decided to try and add one of our own to that list!" Briana adds as she moves aside to let Arsith and Teldon better assist Joanna. She ducks behind Teldon, calling, "Watch out, here they come!" as she places a hand on his shoulder.
Casting Guidance on Teldon!
Arsith D' Abariane
Arsith presses upon their foes, fighting side by side with Joanna
PA, Msw Wp, Wp Focus: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 + 1 - 1 = 7

But she is less succesful
GM Zed
The first of the cultists is struck by Teldon's spear - falling backwards, they collapse in an expanding pool of blood. The second is smashed to one side by Joanna's forceful blow - with a sound of splintering bone, he also collapses in a heap...
...the last of the cultists, in a knocked-through room off to the side, seems less certain now that he has become badly outnumbered... but he gathers his courage and defiantly gestures to Joanna, "Your false god will one day be as dust... and the Dreamer in the Dark will rule over all"
Cultist 3, Readied Action
Everyone may take their turn now
Joanna Whitehall
Joanna's eyes glow silver as she marches up to the cultist, her teeth clenched as she moves closer.
"Maybe, but that is not this day," she says as she raises her sword.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Teldon Moore
Teldon whacks at the cultist with the shaft of his spear...
attack (subdual): 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 5 - 4 = 16, possibly doing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
GM Zed
Edging forwards, Teldon sweeps forward with his spear before the cultist can attack – the wooden shaft smashes against the man’s head with a vicious crack and, with an abruptly curtailed yelp of pain, he drops to the floor… a stain of red starting to grow in the cloth of the cultist’s mosquito mask.
Non-lethal damage exceeds total HP so some of Teldon’s attack deals lethal damage
The friends have a few moments to take in their surroundings… the ladder appears to lead into a crawl space within the roof whilst, over to the left of the room, broken chairs, old straw-filled mattresses and water-stained, mouldering quilts are piled in a corner.
As the group consider the room, the silence is interrupted by the tinkling of broken glass coming from beyond the door to the north.
Arsith D' Abariane
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Look, here, in the left corner! There is a metal strongbox, under the detritus... But beware, the floor seems rotten. I don't want anyone to fall and get hurt. Besides, who knows what lurks under the house?
Teldon Moore
edit: ninja'd... that's what i get for posting from my phone
perception (take 10): 10 + 12 + 1d6 ⇒ 10 + 12 + (3) = 25
Teldon frowns at the spreading blood.
"I tried to knock him out, but seem to have hit him too hard..." he states with some frustration, "if you want to questions him, or try to have him tried somewhere, someone will need to stabilize him."
I don't believe Magnimar's authority extends this far at all, though I doubt Joanna has considered that... of course, if their reputation is deserved they may relish the opportunity to extend their influence...
Observing the room he notes several things... "Be careful," he warns everyone, "the floor over there is badly rotten- you may fall through..." then in a much quieter voice he adds, "there's also a metal strongbox beyond it... perhaps the victims effects are in there..." He looks at Arsith with some surprise as she issues her own warning at the same time as his.
Joanna Whitehall
"Not to mention someone just broke some glass on the other side of the house," Joanna says as she tends to any survivors.
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Briana Kaddren
Seeing that Joanna has the assessment of the felled cultists well in hand, Briana simply crouches down next to her friend. "Are we planning to defend ourselves as needed but tend to any of these cultists that survive after the fact? I...I think it's something we probably need to be decided on and pretty quick," she murmurs quietly, glancing apprehensively towards the northern door. "If so, I'll heal them to the best of my abilities. If not..." her voice trails off.
Teldon Moore
"I wouldn't suggest doing any proper healing yet..." Teldon offers, fixing his gaze on the northern door and readying his longspear, "try to stabilize them so they don't bleed out and they can be healed after the other threats are dealt with."
Ziomarra Callinovo
Zee beholds the three defeated cultists with an expression that's equal parts contempt and pity. She then checks to see if any of them are still alive. If so, she'll assist Brianna with first aid.
Heal (aid another - DC 10): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Heal (aid another - DC 10): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Heal (aid another - DC 10): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
As she works, her eyes tear up. "What has the cult of Ghlaunder done to these people? This should never have come to pass!" She looks to her friends, "We must root out this cult and destroy it before it corrputs this village beyond redemption!"
Briana Kaddren
"I guess that would make the most sense," Briana nods in response to Teldon's suggestion. As Zee begins to tear up, she puts an arm around the witch and gives her a brief, supportive hug. "We'll save as many as we can, Zee. We'll put things right!"
Once the cultists have been tended to, the shaman turns her attention back towards the northern door. "Door first and then we come back to see about that strongbox? I'm not sure that I have any means for getting someone over to it without collapsing the floor."
GM Zed
...and, no sooner have all of the cultists been made safe - their wounds tended and their hands bound, then there is a scraping at the door to the north... and a vaguely familiar voice calls out - a woman's voice... Alizna, the weaver that Mayor Kriegler introduced you to, "Who's there? Oh dear, have you come to help me? Oh, please hurry..."
Arsith D' Abariane
SM Aid: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Is it possible to "aid" someone else SM roll, as it is personal by definition?? If not consider this my regular roll.
Let's process with caution, Teldon. I don't trust her, even if I don't know why.
GM Zed
1 person marked this as a favorite.
I think, as Teldon said, you don't trust Alizna... so a conditional modifier (plus Aid Another from Arsith) means you make the DC for the Sense Motive Check.
Also, just gone past 4,000 GM Posts!!! Quite a few of which have been here in this game :) I shall treat myself to a new Avatar - I've had Nethys a few times plus a spooky guy from Rise of the Runelords... what next? I wonder...
Ziomarra Callinovo
Zee whispers, "Given what she said to me about Desna and Ghlaunder at the Festival, I think Alizna is part of the cult.".
Zee takes out her tattered and incomplete Harrow deck, ready to use it as a weapon.
GM Zed
"Please help... Hurry, I believe they are going to sacrifice me... Help!!!", there is another shuffling and scraping noise from beyond the door to the north... and then silence.
Note that I have taken the liberty of putting the next room on to the map already!!! Although I haven't marked any of the occupants on it...
Joanna Whitehall
"Well, personally, I think I'd like to call her bluff," Joanna says, an edge of anger still in her voice.
Speaking up, her accent becomes just a bit crisper, more aristocratic, as she calls out to Alizna.
"Perhaps you think us fools. We've already had our fill of deceptions, why don't you come into the open, or are you afraid of one young paladin?"
Teldon Moore
well, that certainly isn't how I would have handled that... but maybe her impetuousness will lead them to make an error...
Teldon creeps up quietly to the northern wall, about a longspear's length from the door.
positioning myself adjacent to the wall, 10' from the door, so I threaten the space they need to move through to enter this room. If I can get there in a single move I'll also ready an action to try to trip the first one who comes out. (Sorry, for some reason I can't even view the map on my phone right now) edit: And, I ready an action to trip the first one to come through the door (I got to the map, and moved my icon accordingly)
Briana Kaddren
Oh, I guess we're still going the direct route, sort of. I think Teldon has the right idea; let's see if we can catch her unawares if she opens the door.
Following Teldon's lead, Briana carefully draws her crossbow and creeps forward to get into a good position to fire on whoever opens the door, should she need to.
Not sure what that little fence thingy is on the map but if possible, Briana will crouch behind it with her crossbow drawn and ready - but she won't fire immediately on whoever opens the door. She just wants to be prepared :)
Joanna Whitehall
Joanna stays in front. She's not much for deceptions, but hopefully, the paladin standing in plain sight would distract the woman long enough for her friends to make good on their surprise.
GM Zed
As Joanna calls out, Alizna's reply is accompanied by a rasping laugh, "Very well then my dearest... I could have offered you a new faith... or the chance to meet the Gossamer King upon a sacrificial pyre... Now though my loveliest, I think I shall just leave your bidy for the carrion". As the friends prepare for someone to come through the door, there is another series of scraping noises on the wall... and then, silence...
GM Zed
The scraping is just near the door... I've put Teldon five feet away from the door at the point nearest to the sound.
Edit: ten feet from the wall!
...and despite that challenge from Alizna, the door remains closed... the only noises now, the heavy breathing of the bound cultists and the creaking of the old house...
Ziomarra Callinovo
Zed: Does the door open inward or outward? If it opens inward, Zee could open the door then stand behind it, using it for cover...
Joanna Whitehall
"Oh gods, she laughs like my step-mother."
Joanna waits five feet from the door with sword and shield ready.
GM Zed
Pulling the door inwards, Ziomarra - staying behind the door itself - peers into the next room...
...where there is no evidence of Alizna at all...
To the south, this long room is empty save for a large mound of compost covered with tiny black mushrooms heaped nearly to the ceiling in the southeast corner of the room, while to the north, an old kitchen seems to have been repurposed into some sort of indoor garden. A workbench cluttered with pottery stills and glass alembics stands below small alcoves filled with vials and beakers. Dozens of clay vessels rest haphazardly on wooden boxes, each sprouting neatly-pruned shrubs or large, exotic mushrooms. They appear surprisingly well-tended, given the state of the rest of the building, though the roots of several have burst through their pots.
Joanna Whitehall
Joanna cautiously steps into the room, her eyes looking for any sign of the seamstress.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
GM Zed
Ever so cautiously, Joanna steps into the room - her eyes and ears alert, seeking and searching for the crone who appears to have vanished into thin air. Behind her, Ziomarra and Briana are equally puzzled...
...a puzzlement that lasts mere seconds as Joanna is suddenly bathed in a sticky gossamer web - with no chance to avoid it, all Joanna can do is look up at the ceiling from whence the adhesive strands originated... and there, snug against the ceiling, a bloated spider the size of a human... black pulsating carapace and, as a final abomination, the head of the crone... laughing maniacally...

Web: An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check or burst the web with a Strength check. Both are standard actions with a DC of 14. Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it suffer a –4 penalty.
Joanna Whitehall
"Don't worry about me! Get her," Joanna calls out.
Free action to get teh party to focus on the spider thing.
Joanna Whitehall
I know, but I don't know if Joanna's going to be conscious when that comes about.
Arsith D' Abariane
Arsith attacks the disgusting creature with vigor
PA, msw weapon, Wp focus: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 1 + 1 - 2 = 17

Begone, foul creature!

Hooray for free internet at the hotel!!! Still going to be a busy couple of days but I'll sneak a few posts here and there... No map updates though
Arsith's attack fails to hit the agile spider-creature... it pulls back close against the ceiling just beyond the sweep of her weapon and then, in dulcet tones, sings towards Arsith, "Sleep now my dear, let gossamer wings usher in your dreams... Sleep now..."
Alizna, 5 ft step then Sleep vs Arsith
Arsith - you must make a Will Save DC14 or fall asleep
Everyone may take their turn now
Alizna is on the ceiling (within reach from the ground) 5ft north of Joanna
Teldon Moore
I'm not sure if there's still something going on with my phone or if something happened with the map but our positions on it don't make sense to me...
Teldon moves up next to Joanna without passing through the door and, investing an arcane spark in his spear, takes advantage of its length to stab at the spider-witch past her... move to space south of Jo, use arcane pool, and attack
longspear attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24, for: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
GM Zed
Yeah, Joanna should be just north of the door - Ziomarra adjacent (and in cover behind the door), Arsith adjacent, Briana behind the ladder (that leads into a roofspace) and Teldon needs to be adjacent to Joanna also...
Teldon's spear cuts through the chitinous body of the spider creature... blood dribbling down the shaft as he pulls it away...
Ziomarra, Arsith, Joanna and Briana may act now
Ziomarra Callinovo
Posting from my phone, and can't adjust the map...
Zee enters the room and looks up. She fixes Alizna with an icy stare.
Evil eye hex: -2 to AC for 6 rounds. Will save DC 14 reduces that to 1 round.
Briana Kaddren
Tried to update our positions on the map as best as I could based on Zed and everyone else's prior posts; let me know if I need to shuffle folks around again.
With quarters being close, Briana opts to drop her crossbow and squeeze into the room past Teldon and Joanna, drawing her mace as she does so. As she spins around to face Alizna, she swings her weapon in a wide arc that aims for the creature's midsection but misjudges the distance and whiffs harmlessly.
Attack (MW Light Mace): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
GM Zed
Alizna, Will Save vs Evil Eye: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24, Saved, -2 penalty to AC applies this round only
The spider creature recoils as Ziomarra fixes it with her gaze - yet, despite the sudden lethargy which grips it, it easily avoids Briana's Mace attack.
Map looks okay, thanks Briana
Waiting on actions from Joanna and Arsith
