Open for business.
A short explanation of how I'll be running some things:
First, all Gameplay will be in this thread. Including die rolls. Roll20 will be used only for maps and character movement.
Second, the expectation is that everyone will post at least once a day during the week, and once on the weekend. The pace can increase and decrease depending on you, the players. I'll be making one big update and post per day and small updates when necessary throughout the day.
Third, with the exception of simple questions, All non-game rules questions and discussion takes place in the Discussion thread. It makes it easier to organize the game.
Since this is Play-By-Post (PbP) and it can take a long time to do stuff I'll use a few things to speed it up:
-if everyone rolls their own initiative and goes in the order they rolled it might take a few more days to get through each combat so I will roll for everyone and post in blocks who's turn it is. If your name is up in bold you can post your action. Since it's possible for players to delay on each other I will assume that actions happen in the order they get posted. If you want to delay/ready until after someone else does something just include it in your post and we'll fit it in where appropriate. If you do a ready, please include all relevant die rolls already
initiative will look something like this:
If your name is in bold, it's your turn.
Initiative
Mik, Goro
Enemy
Party
Round 1
If you haven't posted in 24 hours and you are the last to post I will NPC you in to keep the pace going. Most of the time that will be putting you on full defense or withdrawing from combat.
If you are going away for a prolonged period (like a few days/week) - not a problem as long as you let me know in advance and I'll NPC you in. If you haven't let me know and you don't post I'll have your character tag along for a few days and after that he will stay behind to guard a passage way or head back to town.
To speed some checks up I will sometimes post spoiler blocks with a skill and listed DC, if you make the DC you can check what's behind the spoiler and act on that knowledge. If you want to check for something and there isn't a spoiler block you can still do so. There may or may not be relevant information when I didn't put up a spoiler block.
These might include, but are not limited to; Perception checks, Knowledge rolls and anything else I think might apply.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

It's time for everyone to dot into the Gameplay Thread. When you dot in, do the following.
Type in an action."Say something out loud in bold"
Then think something else in italics
Make a Perception Check:
Perception: 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (1) + 35 = 36
The Gargantuan Green Dragon sees all.
Make an Attack Roll:
The Gargantuan Dragon bites at ZAO:
Bite: 1d20 + 31 ⇒ (16) + 31 = 47 and hits.
It would cleave too, but that's a lot of work for me.
Make a damage roll:
Bite Damage: 4d6 + 18 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 2) + 18 = 27
Explain bonuses, penalties, and effects out of character. Also simple questions about game play logistics go here in the out-of-character format (ooc).

sMik PZ |

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21
Seeing the Gargantuan Dragon with chunks of ZAO hanging from its mouth, Mik shifts 10' directly away, tumbles another 10' to avoid AoO
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28
and casts Invisibility.
Good Luck, ZAO Mik mumbles.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

Unfortunately for Mik, his Acrobatics check fails and the Dragon gets an AoO as it attempts to bite Mik
Bite: 1d20 + 31 ⇒ (3) + 31 = 34
for
Damage: 4d6 + 18 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 1) + 18 = 32
After taking a chunk out of Mik, it stares right at Mik after he casts his spell and smiles.

My apologies, this isn't my intention at all. I cut and pasted the formatting information from a post from a game that I am currently playing in. I like the way the DM runs that game and keeps play moving (which is important in PbP format). If someone hasn't posted in 24 hours, I'll have them follow along with the rest of the party. During combat I'll attempt to contact them and allow them to tell me what their character is going to do, otherwise I'll have them do what is in their best nature, either attack or withdraw or support another character. Thanks for your understanding. I'll do better at proofreading in the future.

Goro Carrick |

perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
To see the beads of sweat accumulating on Smik's forehead.
I'll try to draw his attention Mik, alert the others!
Goro spends a free action to click his heels together. there's no place like home granting himself haste. Then Goro uses a swift action to cast favored enemy. Goro exhales slowly as he steadys his aim..
ranged attack manyshot: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22 for
damage: 1d8 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 19 ⇒ (3) + 19 = 22
ranged attack haste: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17 for
damage: 1d8 + 19 ⇒ (3) + 19 = 22
ranged rapid shot: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19 for

ranged attack iterative: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 for

![]() |

What is all the commotion!
Trying to sleep and people keep fussin with things
Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34
To see that Goro is about to steal an honorable kill and poor Mik is serving as bait.
Gunther springs into action. Enraged by being left out of the fight he charges in!
Attack: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (19) + 20 = 39
for
Power attack Damage: 1d12 + 26 ⇒ (6) + 26 = 32
Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
for
Power attack Damage: 1d12 + 26 ⇒ (7) + 26 = 33
I know I got his attention and now it is a race to see who gets the honorable kill.

Jyord |

Now where did i put that wand?
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35
Noticing his wounded friends, Jyord rushes to heal them.
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (7, 8, 2) + 9 = 26 on Mik.

Francis, Badger Extraordinare |

Francis enrages and charges the dragon.
Bite Attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16

Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
First Claw Attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15

Second Claw Attack: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
for
Damage: 1d4 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Gimble, The Storyteller |

Goro fires away. The manyshot bounces off the green scales. Goro rushes the next shot too much and the hasted shot just misses hitting himself in his own foot (A natural 1). The next two shots bounce harmlessly off the dragon's hide.
Gunther attacks and his first swing finds its way between the dragons scales and he actually damages the monster. The second attack bounces harmlessly off his hide.
Jyord heals Mik most the way back up.
Francis enrages and attacks, but none of his attacks pierce through the dragons hide.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

I'd like to start a mock encounter until everyone checks in so we can all get used to the mechanics of playing (and DMing). As ZAO and Griff check in we'll incorporate them into the encounter as well.
There's a new Roll20 map up. The red circle off screen is a spell marker for anyone to manipulate and use.
You are marching through the jungle for a reason you think is important. It's about noon on a clear day, moderate temperature.
I'd like everyone to make perception checks.

Jyord |

Correct me if i'm out of turn here
Jyord puts a hand on badger to alert him and motions upward to the rest of the party.
Spider webs above, gents. Be on your guard.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

Is it a trap?
Isn't it always a trap? But in the technical sense, no, it's not a trap
Correct me if i'm out of turn here.
No, you're not out of turn. Talking is a free action.
After Jyord points out the webs, everyone sees a small monkey perched on a branch in one of the trees about 20' up among the webs watching the group walk through the jungle.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

The monkey is sitting innocently when a web shoots from it right at Mik.
Mik, Jyord, and Goro can make Will saves again.

Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
"Arg, will this nightmare never end. Now there are THREE of 'em" Mik mutters to himself as the webs envelope her.

Gunther bursts into rage, pounces on his enemy while drawing his great axe and attacks
It's a mind trick filthy magic!!
Attack: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33

Damage: 1d12 + 25 ⇒ (6) + 25 = 31

pounce is a partial action and should allow one attack in a surprise round. Think big cat pounce on victim gets its full attack with natural weapons in surprise round. As for the 20' up I did miss read your message. It was the "before you" that threw me off. New action will be to tell to everyone it is a magic illusion and attack the monkey they see. I then move to Mik axe at the ready.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

All right Goro it's your action.

Goro Carrick |

Goro quickdraws his bow, activates boots of speed and takes aim against a favored enemy.

Gimble, The Storyteller |

Goro draws his bow and fires 5 arrows in 4 shots. The first 2 arrows from his first shot strike true dealing 22 points of damage.
Gunther and Goro make a Perception Check:
The monkey turns it's attention toward Goro and throws what looks like a huge Bolas made of webbing. . .
Bolas: 1d20 + 23 - 6 ⇒ (2) + 23 - 6 = 19
. . .And the bolas flys over Goro's head wrapping around the tree behind him.
Initiative Round 1:

Monkey (22 Damage)

sMik PZ |

The scenery has changed from green dragon to monkey so I assume Mik doesn't have Invisibility running anymore. If he did, would the monkey see him? Also assuming the green dragon and monkey are lotus plant induced dreams.
As for the webbing, is it an Area of Affect or just personal to Mik? Regardless, Mik would like to use Escape Artist to slip out of the webbing and, if successful, move 20' South and Shift up to 10', if necessary, to get cover behind the tree trunk. If webbing is area of affect, Mik likely would Shift first to get out of area after making escape artist check. Assuming if Mik shifted while entangled, the webs will likely go with him.
Escape Artist: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

sMik PZ |

Mik thinks to himself "There's no place like home, there's not place like home, there's not place like home", clicks his heals together 3 times and ...

If you don't want to take the webs with you, they fall off when you shift.
